Please, on July 17th and 25th, have the people unloading tires do something like put on safety blinkers and place a couple of cones when blocking the street. I had to watch out for a biker, a pedestrian, and another car simultaneously, and the lack of safety and confusion almost led to an accident. This is the second time I have seen something like this. Last week, a piece of metal somehow pierced my tire on the way home from work. I happened to be near downtown Lawrence when I started to hear the "whomp, whomp, whomp" noise. After pulling over and checking the issue, I knew I didn't have long before I either needed to change my tire or get to a tire shop. Fortunately I was able to make it to D&D minutes before they closed. They gladly checked me in, kept my car and told me that they would review the issue in the morning and call. As promised, they inspected the next morning and let me know that a replacement would be needed (not repairable). They presented me with options and let me know how long it would take. To my surprise, they could get my out of stock tire size installed the same day. Wonderful customer service, followed through on what they said, and had a great value. Twice they worked on my brakes. First time they replaced the bakes and the new ones froze up a block away. They said the brakes were repaired, but I almost didn't stop at a light two blocks away. Took it back, they said it was the master cylinder and replaced it. One week later, I have no brakes at all! I'm never going back. Who knows what they would try to charge me for next! read more

My son goes to school at KU... 3 hours from home. He noticed A clunking sound when he pressed the brakes. He was supposed to drive home that day. I(mom) called D and D first thing in the morning, they diagnosed the problem in about an hour- it was a minor problem but, definitely needed to be fixed ... the shop was very busy and I had been told prior that it would be Friday(it was Tuesday)before any major fixes could occur. After I explained that my son would need to drive home and was supposed to do so that day, Jason said the car would most likely be ok, but, he'd hate to send him out on the road. Jason had the car done by 1230! What could have been a major downer on my son's last day of freshman year turned out to be a minor bump in the road. These guys were amazing and would recommend them for any tire replacement. I was driving on I-70 in Kansas and I noticed that at 40mph the back end of my car was fish tailing. It's a rear wheel drive Infinity G-35. I just thought it was terrible in the snow/ice because I know how to drive in snow/ice. Anyway, they suggested I come in and have my tires checked for wear. Sure enough I needed four new tires. They were up front and honest about the quality and pricing of the tires and told me that I also really needed an alignment. We had a lawnmower tire that has been giving us fits, every time I called they are able to fit us in. We need 4 new tires for a vehicle that drives a minimum of 400 miles a week! Didn't even give it a second thought to do business here! Always give-it-to-straight no-BS customer service and not to mention it's local! I was having problems with some noise in my car while driving. I went to several stores in Kansas City and got a different story each time. I drove to Lawrence to go to D&D because I always have had such good luck with their advice. They figured out what the actual problem was (a combination of things mentioned at the other places I visited in KC) and explained why the other shops had said so many different things and what would solve the problem PERMANENTLY rather than fixing a piece at a time (so I could be charged more) like the other places would have. The best testament to D&D are the customer letters that hang on their bulletin board. They all talk about how fair and honest the store has been over the years and I think that's pretty cool. Yah, it's a little dirty, they can be a little ruff at times and its not anything like a chain store. But they give honest advice and really know what they are talking about which is what I really look for in mechanics. read more

I had a flat on a weekday morning. Bad start to a day for sure, I was able to get home, and I called around and landed on D&D. They opened at 730 and are an independent local shop, so I figured I would give them some business. I should have stopped after the phone call, they were short and unfriendly, but I didn't. I went there, they said it would be about an hour, but I was happy when I saw it getting worked in about 30 instead. 40 minutes later, I was told it was a rebuild kit on my TPM that was leaking, $8 for that and labor, $25 total, I was happy. The next day, the tire was flat again! Took it to Discount Tire, they met me at the door with a smile, found the nail in the tire that D&D couldn't. Fixed it up right. I would like to have my $25 back. But mainly my time. Don't waste yours. read more

D&D has been getting my business since the mid 1980s. They've always provided great service, solid advice, and are not afraid to tell you your tires can get another 10K miles before you purchase new ones. In other words, they'll tell you what's right, not what is going to make them a few extra bucks. And they'll take you outside to show you what they're talking about on your car as part of the process. Even though they're really busy all of the time they'll really do their best to get you in if you need service. Bit taken back by some of the negative comments. Never experienced that myself and I don't go there so often they recognize me. Their prices are competitive and I have say it--I like the fact it's not a chain. I know your money goes all over the planet for purchases these days but in this case most of it stays in Lawrence and the surrounding community. Four solid stars for the guys working in the summer sun and winter cold. It's a tough job. The folks at the counter are strictly business but friendly. How can you be passionate about a tire shop? When they're this good, it's easy. Local, friendly, good quality, and, yes I dare to say it about a mechanic: honest. I'm not kidding. Unanimously, every person I talk to recommends D and D Tire. I've never felt taken advantage of, when I've gone there, and they literally outfitted my Toyota Corolla with four brand new tires for under $400. They didn't try to add on a bunch of stuff I didn't ask for, and they always offer to repair a tire before replacing it. Why can't all car shops be this grand? read more

But, you go back a month later, and have a question about something that hasn't been right since the instillation. Their doing or not...worst customer service ever. Sadly, D & D has been in place so long, they can afford to cast out all around customer service and discourage further "petty" business. The D & D of 2014 does not "go out of there way" to get you in. There is a new Tire Shop in Town! DISCOUNT TIRE on 6th Street. These guys literally come meet you halfway, eager for your business (any business), not just high dollar tire sales. They found the problem, quoted the price, and got me on my way in minutes. D&D Tire is a solid, locally-owned tire business that will take care of your tire needs, and is there for you if you need them in a jam. As I was leaving work yesterday, I could hear a rhythmic "thuk thuk thuk" as I drove down the ramp of my work parking garage. I thought it might have been a rock embedded in the tread of my tire, but when I pulled over to investigate I instead found half an inch of a bolt sticking out of the center of my tread. I called D&D because I've had good experience with them in the past, and I asked if they would be open if I could get my car to them in the next 40 minutes. They let met know that they would be open for another hour, and that if I could get the car to them, they could patch me up. After a quick tire change, I was on the road, and made it in their door 20 minutes before closing. They took my keys, pulled my car in, and went right to work. They extracted the bolt, and let me know that it looked like it probably was broken off of another person's car, but that they could apply the plug and patch that would take care of the hole. A few minutes later, they let me know that it was all done and I was ready to go. Not only did they take care of plugging the tire that I had been transporting in my trunk, but they also replaced it on the vehicle, and put away my donut spare and the tray with the scissor-jack. All told, I was finished and back on the road as if I never had a tire puncture in under 20 minutes for less than $20. I am very thankful to D&D, not only because they patched up my tire in small emergency, but that they fit me in to a small window just before closing time, and took care of me as a customer. Incidentally, I had bought these tires from D&D about a month ago, and I had very good service then and have been very happy with the work. I had not yet written a review about that service, but that work on my tires (and at a reasonable price for four quality tires, mounted and balanced, as well as a brake job that took care of a longstanding issue with a warped rotor) coupled with this excellent service for a puncture has elevated D&D up to a level of greatness in my opinion. I am not sure which tire shop the negative reviews were talking about because the folks at D&D were honest and very helpful. My daughter went to a national chain for routine car care and was told she was in danger of having a tire blow out from wear and tear. I called around and talked with Pat at D&D. D&D evaluated my daughters tires and determined that the tires were ok and did not need replaced. They fixed the problem and charged a fair amount. I have used D&D for about 15 years now and have found their service to be exceptional. I have absolutely no complaints and have bought tires there for numerous vehicles in our home fleet. One other positive I should mention is tire pricing. I always check prices, both online and in-town, and they consistently beat out Walmart, Costco, and others on cost. I can only speak to my family's 30-plus year relationship with D&D, but they've always been honest, friendly, and quick. Just got new tires there last month and it couldn't have been easier. Only charged for the tires, no service costs. Priced less than same tires at Walmart. Tire disposal costs are minimal as well, but I didn't have to worry about them because I took the old tires home for garden planters. D&D is quick, cheap, and easy (there's a joke to be made here about an ex), so I'm not sure what the problem is. read more

These guys are absolutely exceptional. They are not only extremely reasonable, ($17 to patch my tire), but quick, and most of all, genuinely friendly. While leaving, my 9-year-old daughter (who was already on crutches from a prior injury) fell on their sidewalk and skinned her knee. One of their employees (I think his name was Jason), saw it and went inside to get us band-aids, cotton balls, and hydrogen peroxide. Great and honest service. I had a flat tire while travelling from MN to OK. The tire plies had separated and the tire was not repairable. D&D not only found me a used tire, but it was the exact model and wear as my original tires. They mounted it, put it back on my truck and put my spare away. I had a very bad experience at D&D tire. I have been a loyal customer for the 16 years we've lived in Lawrence. I recently purchased four Michelin tires which were expensive. On Wednesday October 17 I was driving to the airport and realized one of my tires was low on air. I immediately pulled off the road at the nearest exit and there happened to be a fire station nearby. I stopped at a fire station as I knew they would have an air station. They filled the tire and it exploded due to being over heated. I called D&D and was told that someone would look at the defective tire and determine whether it would qualify under the tire warranty or if they could give me a "good will" discount on a new tire. Jim at D&D told me to leave the tire and he would get back to me with his findings. After not hearing from anyone, I called and found out that the replacement tire was already mounted without any cost adjustment. I specifically asked to be called with their findings. It's disappointing when a small local business doesn't stand behind their products or take care of their most loyal customers. I will never again do business with D&D tire and will go out of my way to not recommend them to my friends, family members and colleagues. There are other better alternatives. read more

Recently I was driving from Kansas City to Lawrence with my daughter who had an interview on the KU campus. While on I-70 about 1/4 mile from Lawrence, we got a flat tire. After changing the tire, we went to the nearest tire store, which was D&D, and hoped that they would be able to help us that day. We dealt with Phil who assured us that the problem could be fixed quickly while we were on campus. Phil also gave us a ride to campus so that my daughter could make her interview on time. Within 15 minutes, Phil called to advise me that the tire could not be repaired and gave me a very reasonable price quote for a new tire. I received another call 20 minutes later advising me that the car was ready to go. Phil picked us up on campus and gave us a ride back to the shop. I am from Georgia and had a tire that wasn't going to make it home. Having an F-550, it took some looking to find a place that had the right size tire. I am fortunate to have been recommended this place by the local Ford dealership. The staff was most helpful and courteous. I called ahead to see if they had a tire in the correct size, of which they had several. After I dropped it off to get the new tire put on, the service manager informed me that they had a matching used tire that he recommended I go with over a new tire. He explained that due to the amount of wear on the existing tires, that a new tire would wear faster. This recommendation caught me pleasantly off guard, seeing as I already committed to paying for a brand new tire. They went out of their way to take care of me and my vehicle as quickly as possible since I had to wait. I was pleased by the whole experience. It's reassuring when you are far from home to be able to find good reliable service. It certainly doesn't hurt when you find people that are willing to save you $150. Thanks D&D! read more
