I stopped at a jamaican spot on New Castle Ave but they were out of Jerk chicken, so my next destination point was D&H in Newark. The only bright spot was the waitress. The chicken was okay, the sauce was watery runny, not as thick as it should be. The cabbage was un seasoned and very bland. They didn't have plantain so I substituted mac and cheese. It was served as a big square hunk served in a dish that just came out of the microwave. It had a bland taste to it as well. The cook should be ashamed of himself. They got me for $25.00 plus tip. That's not what I'm used to eating when the places in Philly are on point. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. They really need to do better. First visit to D & H. Fun spot. Cool vibe, great music playing, very friendly table service, great menu options. Between those at our table we ordered jerk chicken, jerk pork, and curried goat with sides of cabbage with carrots, and beans and rice. All had bold flavors and just the right amount of heat, with the perfect accompaniment of Red Stripe. They were out of a few things including plantains, so I'll be looking forward to having them next time. If half stars were an option, I'd have given a 3 1/2 star rating. read more

1st Jamaican spot I've been to that had steel entryway doors. Anyways, the actual jerk takes a little time to grow on you. It's more like Adobo chicken. But, with a loose jerk sauce. AMAZING. I love this place. From the atmosphere to the food, everything is great. I've had both takeout and dine in and both were reallly good. I love their beef patty's, stew chicken, plantains, honestly everything I've tried is great and I want to try more! It was very busy when I dined in but the bar service was still top notch. All the jerk meat they let you know is baked and not grilled, but it's ridiculously over cooked and inedible. They have a sign that says, "We are human so we make mistakes" but the glaring mistake is thinking they could pass this stuff off as actual Jamaican fare. Rice was bland. I came here Friday night because I did not feel like cooking. From the outside it just looked like a random hole in the wall and I didn't have much incentive to come in. However, once I did I was blown away. Right when I entered I was hit with such an upbeat vibe. The late 90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B tracks that were playing really livened up the place. More importantly, my meal was exquisite. I had the curried goat with red beans / rice and broccoli. The goat was sooooo delicious and the meat was so tender. I also ordered coco bread that was perfect for dipping into the currry sauce. The beans and rice as well as the broccoli were perfectly cooked and elegantly complimented the goat. I also ordered a Ting (Grapefruit) soda that was also very tasty and unique. Lastly, I had the red bean pie for dessert and wow was it good! It probably would have gone great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Anway, back to the vibe, I typically prefer quiet places when I dine, but the vibe here worked well for me. I really liked the music and the upbeat atmosphere of the venue. The dining area was also very open and didn't at all feel stuffy like some other more posh places I've been to. Just a cool laid back place where you can enjoy some good music and great food. To close, every item I had was excellent and perfectly cooked. In fact, I have to say this is ranked up there with one of the best dining experiences I've had and, if I wasn't going back on my pre-summer-time diet, I'd probably become a regular. D&H has been around forever and the bar stays pretty packed at night. They have tables that surround the bar on both sides. You have to seat yourself but servers will come around to take your order and you can still sit at a table even if you don't plan to eat. I would plan to eat though because the specialty drinks are definitely strong. Try the Red Devil, I guarantee you will only need one to feel it's full effects. And as far as the food is concerned my friends have enjoyed the jerk shrimp and curry shrimp. I have had the jerk chicken but found it to salty for my taste. The regular Buffalo wings were just okay however they still have plenty of authentic Jamaican dishes I would want to try before I rush to judgement about the menu. Let me start of by informing those of you who want a more realistic food experience to visit Spice & Nice 2 off route 40...Google it. Now as a Jamaican there is a certain taste that has to associated with our food and naturally I expect when going to a JA spot. So what made me write this / visit this place? Well I recently I started working close by, so I was no longer close to my usual real deal spot (Spice n Nice). So I decided against my better judgement to stop in for Patties. I figured after avoiding this place for about 2 1/2 yrs they probably got it together. After walking in I made a last minute decision to take a baby step approach due to me remembering my last experience which literally left a bad taste in my mouth. Anyway I decided get some Patties (3 Chicken and 2 Beef) as I figured they can't f that up. Wrong! The patties were cold, clearly stale and fell apart when I bit into it. Even more embarrassing was my co-worker who I bought some for started telling me how horrible it was and how Jamaican food is bad. Yeah... I posted picture of the Patty so you can see I'm not making this up. I will once again put this place on my $hit list for another 2 1/2yrs after that experience. My suggestion to the 2 owners is that you stay out the kitchen and hire a better Cook. The chicken had a thick dark gravy type of stuff on it, in it & around it & it was bland, no taste @ all. The rice & peas was sticky & bland so of course the cabbage was cooked nicely but, again no seasoning no taste. The only thing that was edible was the plantain.
