It's amazing how easy it is to forget that feed stores like this are incredibly varied and have so many options to choose from. We've been using the Mobile Vet they host in their parking lot on Saturday mornings for years. Typically we leave right after because I don't have a farm and one of my dogs thinks she's guarding me from the roosters and will bark her head off if she sees one. So when we stopped in a couple weeks ago, it was actually my first time going inside and really looking at their products instead of just passing through. I was in awe of what they carried, even though I really shouldn't be. Of course they carry the things I expected like hay, livestock feed, baby chicks and supplies to manage their care like mesh, medicines, grooming tools and fly sprays. They also have lawn care, pest control and supplies for birds, rabbits and wildlife that I hadn't thought of before. It's a great place to get everything from horseshoes to shavings to gardening tools with a decent selection to choose from. I wasn't expecting their pet and home goods section to be so big though, and what started out as a quick stop to check for dog food options and a new stake for leads, turned into an hour of wandering around and purchasing way too many things for our pets, lol. They exceeded my expectations in terms of pet medicines. I was anticipating a couple of flea options and maybe several vaccines, but they even had products for anxiety. The amount of dog treats to choose from floored me AND they have the bulk style section for certain treats and chews. I haven't seen that outside of WinCo! Their feed bowl choices were much larger than I expected too, including a variety of sizes, the self feeding bowls and at least one of those puzzle bowls that is supposed to slow down their eating. I can't believe their pet selection is just as big as their livestock selection, I really expected it to be more of an afterthought, but I was not disappointed. I was very impressed to see the offerings they had for my older dogs in terms of food and treats as well, both my dogs loved the probiotic treats I bought here. They had a display of spices at the counter, as well as local honey, I'm totally a sucker for local honey! The prices were fair and I thought the total amount we paid for two armfuls of products was pretty reasonable. I can't speak for all items, but I recognized several brands I normally buy at grocery stores and they were several dollars cheaper here. Warning, it's hard not to buy a chick upon entry and exit. we bought two baby chicks from them. one of them was way smaller than I thought normal and she was so weak. turned out she had vent gleet and was on her last hrs. her entire body was covered in white crust and no matter how I tried to soak her and clean her, it was to no avail. she had this horrible smell to her and she not only suffered but died in my arms. this was completely preventable IF this company actually took care of their chickens and paid attention to them. will never go back and would never recommend. been having chickens since 1997 and I can honestly say I have never seen such a bad case in my life. disgusting humans who would neglect something in their care this bad. read more

Came here today with my kids to replace a chicken that one of the dogs ate. That dog didn't want to wait for the eggs, he wanted his chicken dinner NOW! Having a hard time keeping him off the coop since he got a taste of live food. The chickens are about 3 months old. We need to replace it with a hen that is of the same age. Doing so you avoid the other hens from killing the newly replaced chick. Chickens are apparently pretty brutal to one another if not from the same brood. They get better with age about the pecking order. The chickens we wanted to buy, that were of the appropriate age, are sick and under quarantine. I appreciate D & L not selling us sick chicks. Otherwise, our healthy gals would have been greatly compromised. We're excited about having fresh eggs in the spring! We've been checking back for the last couple of weeks for replacement hens. The folks that work here are so kind and down to earth. I bought 1000 live meal worms for the hens as a treat, that container was expensive at 15$. I think I need to learn how to grow my own meal worms! I enjoyed feeding our chicks treats, but it's expensive to do so. Being a feed store they have a little bit of everything for just about every kind of critter. They have hay for the horses out back. I think they also sell eggs and honey. The girls that work the front counter are a wealth of information. I gather they grew up on farms and/or are involved with the Future Farmers of America (FFA). We went to D&L Farm and Home in Denton on February 24th after hearing from a friend of ours about how good the selection and prices were at this store. We are so glad we chose to give them a try. They had plenty of baby chickens to choose from which was really nice to see. Plus the prices of the chickens were really great. I was happy to see they had plenty of supplies to get us started and all the supplies were way better then other stores in the area. One of the employees (Julie) greeted us when we walked through the door which was really nice and she was extremely helpful. When we told Julie about the chickens we wanted to purchase she was very detailed with looking over the baby chicks to make sure they were in good condition and close to the same size as the others we purchased. Julie's observation and knowledge is very appreciated and made us feel very welcome. We are so happy that we found a business that doesn't just look at it's customers as a dollar figure. Our neighbors recommended this store for hay. We purchased a round bale of "horse quality" hay for $110. When D & L delivered the hay, we were disappointed and shocked upon doing an inspection of the hay. It's dusty, moldy and it is NOT coastal hay. There are stickers in the hay and there is no green to be found in it. Our horse will not eat it and one of the donkeys has a hoarse bray after feeding on the D & L hay for a few days. When I called to question what type of hay had been delivered, the girl who answered my call told me it was horse quality and it had been the last one they had in stock. I asked for a refund or replacement; she declined. The service and quality are very disappointing to my husband and to me. We will not shop at D & L again for any feed products. read more

We loved this place...until this past weekend. A few days ago, we bought three grown chickens for about $27 each. Within just a day, one got sick and died. We called to tell them what happened and said they could not replace the chicken. (They said there was a sign outside saying they cannot guarantee life after purchase, which we did not see, or have EVER seen.) We bought four medium-sized chickens from here about two years ago, and they lived. I heard ownership changed...We won't purchase anything from here because they do not care about their customers anymore. I'm so disappointed. You seriously lost a good customer. I really like this place! I've been here twice to buy food for my Pomeranian, Fred. He eats Muenster Natural, and not everyone stocks that brand. This isn't a huge chain pet store, which I like. They have "pet" food, some toys, collars & leashes, etc. Don't go there expecting a commercialized Petco experience. They are locally owned and they have stuff you won't find at chain pet stores. They also have horse...stuff. I don't know what to call any of it, so I'll leave it at that, lol. They also have sweet little chicks inside and roosters outside. This second time I took Fred with me and he had a good time checking things out. I really appreciate the fact that they were able to check their records to let me know which Muenster food I purchased from them the last time I was in. You can't beat the service and the product knowledge they have there. They are willing to make the extra effort to help you get what you need with delivery and staying open even after store hours. Who does that these days? Everyone there treats you like family, they know their repeat customers well and listen to all suggestions and I have seen many put into action. I love that they offer special sessions for the customer to attend so they can learn about things that concern a buyer about the products they sell and general knowledge about things of interest in the farming world. They just had a bee keeper come in, where can you find places that go out of there way to educate there customers on all things farm related? D&L Denton is more than a step above the rest! This feed store has everything, or they'll order it for you! The owners Rex and Jennifer from Argyle keep this place clean and they are always hosting fun events for the community! They even deliver all over the area and into Arygle! I have never been disappointed here, and have been shopping here since 2008! Their dog food selection is by far better than anywhere else you can buy pet food too! I know my pups enjoy their natural food and treats :) Plus, I can pick up my fresh chicken eggs and natural honey here! My husband is an egg eating machine, so this helps!
