I live 2 blocks from here. The last 2 times we attempted to come in, we were refused service 2 hours before closing. They stated they were no longer seating anyone. I've been to d'egg twice already and I've only been in Norfolk for a week. This diner mainly specializes in breakfast, but they do have some lunch specials each day. My first visit was for lunch. I ordered the meatloaf special. It was a huge slice of meatloaf and slathered in gravy. It came with two sides so I ordered yams and succotash. The succotash was extremely disappointing. It was corn and lima beans drenched in tomato sauce. Yuck. They ran out of yams so I ended up ordering mashed potatoes. It tasted okay. For breakfast I went with one of their specials. I had asked for them to cook my eggs only with egg whites and they were able to accommodate my request. I also had pancakes and coffee which were very good. Prices here are cheap, which I like! Service was VERY good. They have table seating and booth seating. A nice place for some quick eats. read more

This restaurant was basically across the street from my hotel so it was the perfect place to grab breakfast before I had to head to the airport. Service was friendly and efficient, my waitress made sure my drink was always filled and the food came out hot and pretty quickly. I went with the corned beef hash and eggs plate and it was tasty. I ordered my eggs over medium and I would have preferred them on the grille for another minute, but that is really my only complaint. I'm a big fan of D 'egg. I believe it's the epitome of a classic diner. It offers a solid but greasy soul food. One thing that I love with this place is the variety of sumptous breakfast menu. Nothing spectacular on the meal but its signifies the essence of a home cooked meal. Simply delicious, well seasoned and enough to filled up your hungry stomach. For today's visit, I ordered the breakfast special consisting of two over easy eggs, turkey patties, , wheat toast and apple sauce. Thought it was perfect to start my day. Though, it didn't look visually appetizing, the entire meal had so much flavor. The apple sauce was probably the highlight of my meal. It was well balanced and has lots of flavor. I stopped in here on Saturday morning. They were busy as there was a race this weekend. It was filled with folks competing in the 5k, 10k and marathon races. Even though groups had a wait to be seated, I was only 1 and got a seat at the bar. It had a great diner feel and the plenty of typical options. Choices from pancakes, omelettes, eggs Benedict and breakfast wraps/sandwiches. I had a coffee and steak burrito served with sides of salsa, sour cream and avacado. WILL NOT RETURN. The only nice things about this spot were the eggs and the busser (he was the only one who smiled at us and was polite). FOOD - We both got the D'Local Yokal. Toast was burnt, hash browns tasted like refried leftovers with no flavor, turkey sausage was overcooked and rubbery. The eggs were seriously the only thing on my plate that were made right. SERVICE - NOT GOOD. My goodness, don't ask for a side of butter because one of the girls rolled her eyes to the ends of the earth. Also, Maryna (our server) just had an attitude and I even tipped her over 20% bc I've worked food service before, but my goodness, she was RUDE grabbing the check from me. First time experience was a Tuesday lunch and restaurant was busy with a variety of clientele. The daily special included fried pork chops, beef tips on rice and baked chicken (all ordered at our table). Portions were ample for the $8+ price and included two sides. Food tasted of good home cooking and was familiar with the exception of one side: tomato pudding. I'd never heard of this and asked details from our server. Seems it is a recipe from the mother of Miss Shirley (one of the chefs). SURPRISINGLY GOOD! Imagine a bread pudding with raisins, nutmeg and a tomatoes. It really stood out on the menu. I had high hopes for this location but was overall unimpressed with my experience. Our server was quite cold and seemed rather inexperienced. We had a small child with us and I can understand how it can be a bit frustrating knowing there's a kid at the table, but it honestly shouldn't affect how you treat your customers. As far as the food goes, everyone at the table was pleased with their meals. I got "d'B.L.T." It was exactly what I needed after a night of drinking. It was nothing to write home to Mom about but it was satisfying and filling with a side of fries. It was only nine bucks so the price was good for my wallet. I also got a Mangomosa. It was alright but borderline room temperature rather than chilled at all. For $8.50, it was definitely highway robbery. You can get a variety of better mimosas for cheaper just about anywhere else. When it came time to get our checks, our server seemed beyond annoyed that the four of us wanted our checks split. We confirmed all of our orders before she went to get the checks and she still came back with our stuff messed up. It took her a ton of time to come back with the correct checks even though they weren't very busy and she only had one other table. By the time it came to leave, however, we were treated with incredibly friendly smiles from the busboy and hostess. So not all hope is lost for the service staff there. Maybe I just caught our server on a particularly hard day. If I find myself out this way again and I'm looking for brunch, I'll probably come back. I'm hoping on my next visit, I'll have a nicer server. And I know for next time not to order anything alcoholic because they're overpriced for what you get. We took a party of 6 there for a late Sunday afternoon breakfast. It is somewhat expensive (large glass of orange juice is $5.25). The food is decent overall. Not exceptional. I don't mind paying extra for an exceptional dining experience and good service. Gratuity is automatically added for a group of 6 or more which is fine in my book. The one thing I take issue with is an additional so-called "cash adjustment" for using a credit card! What made the matter worse is that they do not tell you of this upfront. They simply add it to you bill! . I find this to be a very dishonest practice. When I asked the waiter about this extra charge she said it was something the manager "came up with". Had we paid cash and this charge been revealed upon our seating, I would have no problem with it. But if this is a regular practice the establishment feels is viable customer service, I'm out. Place is pretty busy for a Sunday morning. I understand its a small space limited seating that its going to take time to get seated. We get in and it takes them about 5 minutes to just get our drink order. We had the waitress show up probably 5 times the whole time we had been there. The food was alright but I dont think the price they are asking is worth the food quality they are putting out. The personal are all friendly and cheerful though and the enviroment is bright and cheery. Overall it is a good place for where the restaurant is located but I wont be coming back just due to food quality to price ratio. They might be able to get away with it due to being close to a college and the kids not knowing quality over quantity. read more

I just had the worst experience. Initially, upon walking in the hostess was welcoming and directed me to the bar to place my to-go order. Once I made it to the bar, I sat for almost 10 minutes before I was acknowledged. Finally, someone said they'll be with me and after waiting another 5 minutes I was assisted by "Marina". I ordered the Rib-Eye 3 egg meal and Shrimp n' Grits. While ordering the Shrimp n' Grits I was rudely interrupted by "Marina" asking if I wanted Toast or a biscuit with my Steak n Eggs meal. She never once smiled, presented customer service words like "Thank you or You're Welcome". She gave me a straight face and never apologized for my wait. She saw that I was taken back by the abruptness when I was ordering and she never once tried to show empathy or correct the perception I was receiving. After placing my order, I laid my American Express on top of my receipt. She slid it back to me and said we only take "Visa/MasterCard" then walked off. I left to retrieve my Visa and came back. I waited several minutes more before I was acknowledged then paid for my order. While waiting for my order, I had time to observe the establishment. What I noticed: 1. all of the cooks and/or servers are African American. 2. While the front of the house/ restaurant is White. 3. There's no visible African American taking orders or being a hostess or working at the bar. They are all in the back, kitchen, bringing out the food and going back to the back. Back to the bar, I've now been waiting 15 minutes (second time) total of 30-40 minutes total from time of order and finally a total stranger seated next to me (White lady) spoke up and said "Do you think you can check if that to-go order is hers? She's been sitting here a while". (Total stranger) Yes. Of course, the order that had been sitting bagged for "God knows how long" was mine. "Marina" never acknowledged the service, my presence and I felt like she didn't want to serve me. Before leaving, I asked to speak to a manager to express my observations and the service I'd just received. Long behold, "Marina" is the manager . I'll never spend my money there again. I was so close to asking for a refund but needed a close by restaurant due to my travels. I will NEVER go here, especially this location and I should've read the reviews more closely before choosing. read more

Oh how a short memory can allow a restaurant to remain open beyond its time! As soon as our food arrived we realized the last time we visited D'egg we said "Never again." My hamburger was fried on a griddle so it was gray, a little chewy and tasted a bit of rancid grease. The fried okra was straight from central commissary, certainly not breaded and made in-house. Not horrible and enough salt made it tolerable but not good. One of our parry had pancakes that seemed to have been made and then warmed-up in the microwave, perhaps. The tops were fluffy and okay but the bottom of each pancake was so hard that we had to practically saw through it. Let's just say I'm pretty certain this is the first time this 11 year old has ever not finished pancakes! My wife ordered the eggs Benedict and the egg whites were not fully cooked. The hash browns were dry and tasted of too much oil. The waitress, while polite and efficient, would not walk around our table to give us the check or refill drinks. With a table of six we had to hold our glasses across the table where she would fill them above the plate of the person at that end of the table. Came here for breakfast. Good idea. I ordered their breakfast platter that came with pancakes, 3 eggs and your choice of meat. The pancakes are huge and not likely to be finished with the meal. I added grits to my meal. Not everyone knows how to make grits and the cheese I asked to come with my grits was brought out in a separate cup. The oj is freshly squeezed and delicious and I do like their take on corn beef hash which I asked to be substituted for my meat ( which I was charged for even though the waitress said there would be no extra charge). My wife was extra sleepy when we came and ordered coffee. Multiple people around us were getting their coffee refilled repeatedly but never once did they ask my wife. My friend and I went to D'Egg for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Wait time was decent (20 minutes) and while food was great, service was sub-par at best. The receptionist was friendly. Our server at the bar barely spoke to us. When she gave us our bill, we wanted to split it with two cards, and upon seeing my friend's card, she stated "we don't take Amex" and just walked away. We also ordered an oatmeal to go, which took an additional 20 minutes to come out and was just as expensive as either of or meals. My meal was an egg/sausage/bacon/hash brown/cheese dish, which was great. The hash browns were thinly shredded and crispy. My friend got eggs and French toast, which he really enjoyed. Like I said before, the downfall of our visit was service. As we waited, there were four or five open tables the entire time, which begged the question of why we were waiting. One of the employees who was bussing tables was constantly, inexplicably stating "whoop! Whoop!" To customers throughout our stay. No lie, this probably happened 20 times (and to those wondering, no, I don't think this person had Tourette's Syndrome, but it is possible). Went with some friends who were visiting, it was across from their hotel making it extra convenient. I've been many times before but it had been a few years since I'd been to this location. I was a bit disappointed overall. While the wait to get seated was fast our wait for food was unbelievably long. We had almost an hour wait for our food, breakfast food! My friends had hoped to leave town by 10 am we got there right at 9 and we didn't leave until 11! I had the eggs Benedict, one friend ordered a breakfast combo and the other ordered a breakfast sandwich. Nothing extra fancy but it still took forever! To top it off the food wasn't super warm when we got it and flavor was pretty bland. This makes me sad because I regularly went to the one by ODU when I lived close to it. This location was my first experience at D'egg (they also have D'egg West) and I was greatly impressed from the beginning! The service is always awesome and the food is fantastic. I had the "Award Winning Meatloaf" and it was deserving of awards. It might be an overused phrase but it was better than mom's. (Sorry Mom!) I asked if I sat down and then asked for to-go containers once my food arrived that would be ok? She said yes. The waitress at the bar came to take my order and literally asked "is this for here or to go?" I ordered to go with no issue. It took over 25 minutes for me to get my food, and the entire time the waitstaff was going over who had which tables and who was working which shifts during the week...loudly. It was across the street from our hotel, making breakfast really simple to find and the reviews made our mouths water before even getting there. There were so many menu options!!! It was a southern style diner with big breakfasts and sides. I was excited to see that they had all sorts of breakfast specials, but I was most excited to see one that had French toast [on texas toast] with eggs and a meat. Usually you have to add a side of something but it was already everything I could've wanted. The food was delicious and our waitress was very accommodating. My boyfriend ordered some mix of foods to make up a meal and she knew exactly what kind of meal that could've been, specifically to save us money. It was amazing that she knew the menu like the back of her hand and pointed us in the right/cheaper direction with the same options. For our two meals and juices, it came out to $20 even!
