This used to be our family's favorite spot. When our family comes in town, we make it a practice to eat here regularly. This will be our last time, however. The food has changed. The quality of food has changed too. And that's a shame. Anytime you have to have a microwave IN THE SITTING AREA to warm your food that JUST came out of the kitchen , that's a red flag, My order was simple--toast no butter. There are NO VEGAN OPTIONS on the menu, so I made do. What I received was toast slathered in butter. Did I eat? No. Am I still hungry? Yes. I had a lemon slice off the edge of my mom's water as my meal. In fairness to our waitress, we were a LARGE group of 14. To compile various meals of that magnitude is not easy. Too many items, however came out incomplete, wrong, cold, and tasteless. The grits--were like white, muddy water. And we had MORE than one order of them. How can you make grits taste like, well NOTHING!? They were tasteless and cold--and even the cheese on the grits did not improve the taste. The side of ham never actually appeared with the rest of the meal. Once my husband ate ALL of his meal, the ham finally arrived. The burger was good though, so in fairness, I should mention the good if I am going to talk about the bad. This will be our last visit. We have been coming here for YEARS, but the lack of quality of food and arrival time of our food to the table is not worth the money we paid. We will not return. read more

It pains me to state, this was my first and last visit to this establishment. I had hopes this would be my new breakfast spot, but there were too many misses for me. This is a family operated restaurant, but clearly they may need to reach out for additional help, especially if the young lady who served us is their primary waitress. Her demeanor was immature and borderline rude. Maybe it was because we had a large group, but to me that's no excuse. The food came straight out of the kitchen cold, but there was a small microwave on the table next to ours so we had to zap our plates just so the butter could melt on grits!!! We either had to keep reminding the waitress of missing items, or just be content with the wrong thing. I had the classic 2 egg meal with corned beef, Nothing appealing as the corned beef tasted like it was dropped out the can and onto my plate, not a lick of heat was put on it rendering what looked like dog food. I went to Scandals for a concert yesterday, so this review is solely based on that and not Mom's Kitchen. Overall, it's a nice venue for smaller concerts. I got there a little earlier than when doors opened, so I waited in the restaurant/bar area for a few minutes. This was a nice change of pace from venues where you have to stand outside to wait for doors to open. The person who checked me in at the door was friendly, and I noticed they had complimentary earplugs for concertgoers. After the concert a realized I should have taken a pair since I stood so close to the stage. The stage/show area of Scandals was very spacious, so I didn't feel cramped during the show. They were able to have merch stands for all four bands in the back of the room. I also noticed that in addition to having a bar at the restaurant side, they also had a bar with seating near the stage. If there's a band that comes into town that I like and they're performing there, I would definitely go back. read more

For Mom's Kitchen: This is the epitome of mom/pop places. If you want casual dining for fast homemade food, this is the place. The wait staff is very efficient. They've been around for 40 years so they must be doing something right. I got the meatloaf with fried okra and mac/cheese. The meatloaf was the best I've ever had. The okra was just like anywhere else and Mac and cheese was pretty basic. Order a slice of pie! They have an extensive pie menu! We went there on a very rainy Friday night during a tropical storm. I'm not sure how busy they are on a normal Friday night but we were the only ones there that night. I had the meatloaf dinner and Linda had the crab cake dinner. Both meals were very good. Good crab cakes are very rare anyplace other than one of the better seafood restaurants. Not exactly a Maryland crab cake as the spices were different but good nonetheless. Apparently because we were the only ones in the place the waitress left mid meal and "Mom" and who I presume is her husband took over the wait duties. Neither one speak very good English but are very awkwardly friendly. The restaurant is clean and looks like it has been mostly renovated recently. Mom's Kitchen and Scandals is located in a small shopping center along Holland Rd. Based on the reviews of others and having a coupon, I decided to give this place a try (first visit). This visit was on May 6, 2018 for dinner. When you come in, you can tell that the place has been around a while. Some of the stuff in there was dated. The first thing I noticed when I came in was the smell of cigarette smoke. We made sure to get a table as far away as possible from the bar. We were the only ones in there that evening from the time we came in to the time we left. Most of the activity while here were takeout orders through Uber Eats. Once we were seated, the server came over to the table to give us the menus and asked us about what we wanted to drink. I just ended up with water, which is what I normally do at most places. After a while and we were finally ready, she was there to take our order. The one thing that turned me off at that point was while she was talking to us, food particles or something were coming out as she was talking and landed on the table (this is why I put the review at 2 stars instead of 3). They do have a set of specials that changes each day, but I ended up going with the coconut shrimp and fries. The entree was good and came out hot. I don't know if it was or not, but it seemed that the coconut shrimp was from the frozen kind you could find in a supermarket. My mom had the roast beef special, but even she said that it was way over-seasoned. Overall, this place was okay. Also, do not use the bathrooms. My mom went to it and it was utterly disgusting and turned back out from it. If I come back, it would strictly be to go primarily because of the strong smoke smell in there from their bar (Scandals) that's attached to the place. I have a problem when I am around cigarette smoke for any length of time. If you plan to come here and have that sensitivity as well, go with take out instead. Wow! We have been trying new locally owned places to support during this time. Since we typically travel for Easter, we decide to try this place as they had a really nice special. It was super easy. We texted them to order their Easter Dinner to go. It was ready when we pulled up. Great service, friendly people, taking all safety precautions...the food was AMAZING! Using one of their menus online, I was thinking my total meal, grilled chicken sandwich with fries and a side of okra, would be $12.50, excluding tax. When I called, they answered as Scandals. Don't let that throw you off. Over the phone, the waitress said my order would be $18 and some change. ??? I get there, no other patron was in there. It was nice, well kept restaurant. I get the bill and it's $19 and some change. I'm like, what?! The waitress tells me that she was new and the kitchen fried my chicken. She made an attempt to call me, ok, to tell me the kitchen fried it because the grilled option wasn't on the menu. She goes in the back comes back out with the cook. He said they haven't had the grilled option on the menu for a while, but had the necessary ingredients to do the grilled option. :sideye: ok.....he says he can do the grilled option if I would give 15 minutes to do it. I don't have the time to wait for it. He apologized, then went back into the kitchen. I was going over the bill with the waitress...why it so expensive? She goes over the menu with me and we find out....the menu doesn't match the food line items on my bill. So she gets the manager from the back, and both the manager and owner comes out. They try to accommodate me the second time by offering to add cheese and the other stuff that came with grilled option. Again, don't have time to wait for it. I didn't tip when I left. I don't think anyone knows at that place what to charge. Even the inhouse menu shouldn't be trusted. Apparently I was looking at an old menu online, how old, idk, but the fried okra had doubled in price. Unless they get their pricing strategy together, I don't think I'm going back. Enjoyed our breakfast at Mom's Kitchen this morning. We were greeted by a friendly man and greeted by the waitress, very friendly place. We ordered the chicken and waffles and the breakfast sampler. Both were good. The chicken was fresh...they breaded and fried it. It had good flavor and was juicy. The waffle was good too...crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I went for brunch. The first thing you notice is the smell. This place has been around a strong while. The restaurant itself is not dirty, just dingy because the atmosphere is like a small town, old country restaurant. It reminds me of a restaurant you find off a highway and you're so hungry you would stop there. I've passed by this place several times, while everything around it has changed a few times...this place remained the same, so I decided to give it a try. This Mom and Pop restaurant has been around for a bit. All I can say is OMG - the food is excellent, and the portions really plentiful. Everything that I have tried on the menu so far has been superb. While I knew it was there, I hadn't gone because it is not that close when I am "hungry" - but have attended a few "meetings" there w/friends, and once I started going, I realized just how good the food is. My daughter and I came into this business for the first time and were over charged with no explanation. When questioned about the charge and then being politely advised that they should be providing current and up to date menus or advising their customers of these charges they began to get verbally assaulting cussing at me and my minor child and getting in my face. When I defended myself telling them to back out of my face as that is illegal they began to get more assaulting and making threats. Nice little place tucked away quietly in a strip mall. My brother and I were the only patrons there around lunch which is always a little discerning, however the food proved to be delicious and inexpensive . My brother got the heart attack burger and fries, both of which he said were amazing. I got the breakfast platter which consisted of one pancake, eggs, sausages, potatoes, and bacon. The potatoes and fries were both the highlight of the meal, also the coffee wasn't horrible. Lastly I would like to compliment our waitress who made a new pot of coffee for us and was quite attentive the entire meal (considering we were the only ones in the restaurant) The only downside to this place was during checkout I asked the cashier twice to split the check and she still didn't, I don't think she spoke English. Mom's Kitchen, is a local restaurant that we've been going to for 30 years. They have seen my family grow up. Over the years, the they had their up & downs. Right, before the Pandemic hit, they had just remodeled their entire restaurant. They stayed open and did take out. Mom's is a hidden gem on Holland road in a strip shopping center near Lowe's. We love going there because of the consistent quality of the food. Jason makes sure everything is perfect and if not, he'll will fix the problem. The service is like no other. The cohesive relationships between Debbie & Dorothy are superb. They are constantly checking each other's tables doing whatever needs to be done, filling your drinks to paying the Bill. It's amazing so, there isn't one server that is good it's the entire staff. And, when busy the Rabi family pitches in. Layla and Mike the owners often visit the tables to make sure everything is up to your expectations. The desserts are all homemade by Layla delicious and made with love. I've probably driven past this place a hundred times and had never given it a thought. Then, one day my wife says she wants chicken fried steak and, for whatever reason, this joint pops into my head. Random. So, off we went. When you walk into the place, the first thing you notice is that it looks like you have stepped back in time 30 years. The decor is dated. Like dated. Do you watch Restaurant Impossible? Well, that guy would gut this place and try to modernize it. But, as my wife said, "I kinda like it" and I kinda did too. Our server, whose name I don't remember, was very nice and attentive. She did a very good job. My wife had her chicken fried steak, though it was only available as a breakfast dish. It came with white gravy, home fries, toast, and eggs. She liked it all and so did I (I usually eat half her meal as well as mine. The result of course is my not so girlish figure). I ordered a reuben and it was only OK. The corned beef was a little fatty and didn't have much flavor. But, to be fair, I have been ruined for any other reuben after trying Route 58s so I should have gone a different direction. It wasn't bad just not great. The fries were hot and fresh, so they were good. As others have said, there is a fairly strong hint of cigarette smoke in the place and that normally would be a big turn off for me. But, it wasn't awful. However, if you are sensitive to it at all, this isn't your place. Luckily for me, my parents exposed me to cigarette smoke my whole childhood so I am used to it!!
