The food was terrible. Very low quality meat that is on par with dog food. This place makes subway look like a five star restaurant.

Ordered grinders and a large potato salad that feeds 10-12 people for a birthday party. Clarified the order upon pick up to make sure potato salad was in there. They said yes. Got home and they put a dixie size single serving of potato salad and we paid $12.00 for the large that feeds 10-12. Called to get credit on my credit card and they said we would have to return the small individual potato salad to get the credit. REALLY people???? Who screwed the order up in the first place? If that's extra, then I'd be even more p*ssed to get what is regularly put on. Can you slice it any thinner and still call it meat? Isn't there some regulation about the proportion of meat to bread? I had just moved here from SD county and asked my coworkers where can I get a good sandwich? They said Delias down the street. OK sounds good went in got a Ham and cheese. Bread HARD, and lettuce WILTED. And where's the MEAT?? Paper thin ham..GROSS!! definitely on my top 10 for awesome sandwiches i've ever had :) the first time i ever had a sandwich here it confused me because of the bread... my boyfriend and i thought it was old or something because it crumbled, but we ate it anyway. after awhile we started craving that crumbly crispy bread... haha later after that we tried it again days later and fell in love with it. the bread is definitely something different! WE LOVE IT! it makes the sandwich a unique one. and with shredded lettuce it just makes it 10 times even better! all around i think the cold sandwiches are the best ones.. very fresh and light :) you'll actually feel healthy after eating one! so forget about sub way, come to delias! you'll really want to come back for another one read more

THE best sandwich shop I have eaten at. This place is great. I used to come here as a little kid and love their turkey pastrami sandwich. I'll tell you the sandwiches here are huge. Subway foot long? Please. These are twice as wide and just as long. I just love the shredded lettuce, fresh tomatoes, oil and pepper they put on. But the bread is what makes this sandwich. The crust is nice and crunchy (be careful don't eat too fast or the roof of your mouth will start to hurt!) and soft on the inside. Overall these are some of the best sandwiches I have ever had and certainly the best in Riverside. I always try to make a trip back to D'elias when ever I come back to visit my parents, and their sandwiches never disappoint. read more

Not to mention that every single table was dirty and not cleaned off. One slice of meat on each side of the sandwich, and the cucumbers were extremely soggy. This is a good place to get a unique grinder with bread that is made in house. It is an excellent alternative to Subway but is also a few bucks more expensive. Don't expect to find a seat during the lunch hour as it does become very crowded. Seating is uncomfortable and the whole place could use a makeover. Stay away from the pasta salad. read more

love d'elias! best grinder ever! i first tried it a few years ago when i first started dating my husband. he is from riverside, thats how i was introduced to heaven! love this place. always great! never let me down! love their fries, mac salad, pasta salad. all good! i always get a whole ham grinder! love it. i don't think they are stingy with the meat because i like to taste everything else on the sandwich, not just meat. i also love thier bread because it is not fake tatsting like subway's! i have a tender roof of my mouth so it gets scrathced when i eat a grinder, but that does not and will not ever stop me from getting a little taste of heaven, d'elias!!!!!! also love the staff and they always have great oldies on! read more

What the heck, I finally found the perfect sandwich. I'm a D'elias virgin, so I was a little nervous today. One of my employees took me for Boss's Day. I gotta say I was excited because I am a bread lover. Well I wasn't let down today. I had a turkey & roastbeef combo, add onions and olives...it was heaven on krispy/soft bread that melted in my mouth. The sandwich had my favorite kind of lettuce, shredded fine. Also order a side of fries. Be careful when you order however because once you get your sandwich if you want pepporcini's and try to ask the old chola's that give you your orders, you're otta luck, they tell you that you gotta go stand in line and pay the price.....ugggg, oh well I'll know for next time, don't forget to take the oil to add to your sandwich...yummmmm! I'll be back D's! Oh yeah and the prices very good for a huge sandwich...less then $6. One more thing parking is very tight but I made it with no dings in my car, so it's all good! read more

well I got the philly and maybe one layer of meat and most of the sandwich consist of peppers but whole peppers not cut up horrible. I don't know but I heard they were good but i would not recommend them. We got three sandwiches for 22 dollars and all of them were very low quality. read more

Supposedly a UC Riverside staple, a friend and I came here one day to see what all the talk was about. Being that it was lunch hour, it was fairly packed, but I got to order pretty quickly and received my food shortly after. I ordered the beef au jus (roast beef and cheese sub served with hot beef dip). The bread was just amazing; fresh, flaky, and soft with great texture and the perfect bread to meat ratio. Luckily, nobody hyped the bread up for me, which is apparently the renowned and focal point of the sandwiches, or else I would've went in with higher expectations. Making small conversation with an wide built elderly gentleman, he noted that he's been coming here for years but the location was "not what it used to be." Their consumer base consist of, bored, free spirited and open minded UCR students. the Philly D'Fuego is worth checking out as a medium spicy cheese steak sandwich but they're a bit slow

So, I think the reason for the wildly varying reviews here is that those who don't like, weren't aware of what to expect. The grinder is it's own thing....yes, it IS the bread (and the closer you get to the 10AM opening time, the better!) and not so much the fillings. It's supposed to be a big, crumbly Italian loaf with the bread as the star, and the filling almost as flavoring. For instance, I usually get capicolla and roast beef with extra oil and red peppers...put lots of salt and pepper on to flavor the shredded lettuce...and it's almost salad in a big, airy, light, crunchyloaf. Definitely not your typical sandwich, so you have to kinda know what you're getting in to, to appreciate. But SOOO good when you do know! I've been coming here since I was a kid (almost 30 years, now) since it was a shack with an ordering window and picnic table out front, and my dad for 30 years before that, and believe me, it's the first thing we both think about when we know we'll be in Riverside at lunchtime! LOVE D'elias... p.s. The more recent invention of the Philly del Fuego has been an awesome addition....somehow the hot filling works well on the bread, too! Hot pastrami is great, too....can be be a little fatty, but hey...that's what makes it taste good! Both are great on a cold(er) day.... p.p.s. D'Elia's Grinders is the best. I have been going here for 40 years back when it was a walk up window. The bread is to die for and my usual is the Capicolla (spicy ham). Check out the french fries and the kids grilled cheese yummy too. Highly recommend going here anytime! read more

I haven't been to D'Elia's for over a year. I ordered a roast beef sandwich and after a few bites, I realize that it tastes like ham. Why does your roast beef taste all salty like that phony ham? I was driving through Riverside and thought I would stop and try this historic place I had heard so much about. When I got there they were making fresh bread in the back. I asked them some questions about the history of the place and they gave me a tour. I was so impressed. They told me about the family members that had started it, and how it has evolved through the years. I enjoyed a grinder sandwich and talked to some of the other guests eating there as well. They told me how they had been going there for years and what their favorite sandwich was. It is a super popular place that gets really busy. I'm so glad I stopped there on my way through town. read more

After reading the article in today's Press Enterprise I felt compelled to post my long overdue review on D'Elia's grinders. My family got hooked on the sandwiches back in the 60's. We would sometimes drive from Hemet to their Riverside location to enjoy them. A couple months ago the wife and I were headed into downtown on business and decided to stop at the University location for lunch. Disappointment would be an understatement. Our roast beef sandwiches could have almost passed as vegetarian! What little meat was there was utterly tasteless. The bread was crunchy but so dry it crumbled all over. Maybe some things are best remembered as they were. We will not return. read more

Living in Riverside since 1946 (age 4) I remember the first place on Magnolia Ave. I used to go their with my friends and we loved it. Today, when I feel like a grinder there is no better place to go than the University one. I called in an order today and asked them to brown my beef for me and they did. Who does that extra step when they are busy with the after work traffic? I meet a childhood friend there for good food and talk whenever She comes through Riverside. She will never miss going there. I used to have a business next to Antones when they first opened and the food is good there but just not the same. They have a different thing. So, now in my 70's I hope I can finish my life out always having the enjoyment of eating at D'Elia's. Thanks all of you. read more

Me likey! My co-worker treated me to this place and when I saw the french bread beef roast sandwich, I thought...how is this going to fit in my mouth? Seriously, the thing was bigger than my head. But it's true and now I know why my co-worker swears by this place, the sandwiches just taste nice and fresh. The french bread is light and fluffy with properly crusted crunch on the outside. The flavor is just right and everything just comes together when you finally manage to bite into it...or if you're me...you'll have to smash it down to fit a bite. read more

Terrible place, can't figure out the positive reviews at all. Been dragged herea couple times by co-worker, and the place is always dirty. The sandwiches only have 1 Or 2 slice of poor quality meet, and unripe produce. I refuse to ever go back when someone suggests it. I lived in Germany and fell in love with the bread called brochen. I missed it until I found this place. It is hard and flakey and tastes exactly like it.
