Love my new cut and color from Damian here at D Salon! This is my second visit seeing Damian, and I'm extremely pleased once again on my experience. Made an appointment for 1:30pm today, Damian quickly greeted me and offered me tea or water. Told him simply what I was going for, and *Voila* Goodbye Caramel Highlights and Light Brown hair, HELLO Light Red Mahogany! After coloring, Damian trimmed my hair a bit at the edge-- I never realized how much of an impact a simple trim can do for the hair, but he did a great job on a simple request. Damian is friendly, down to earth, and very hospitable. I always feel so welcomed here and I'm so surprised he rememberer's me even though my first visit was a year ago...remembered my family's restaurant etc. Such a nice guy, that Damian! I just got my hair cut and highlighted a couple days ago. I read wonderful reviews about Damian and wanted to check him out. My boyfriend got me a gift certificate to get my hair done for my bday. =) I called D Salon a couple times and Damian always returned my call quickly. He does get booked quickyly, so try to make an appointment 2 or more weeks in advance. Parking was super easy on 14th Ave in the residential area. The salon itself was very clean and inviting. As I was waiting, I was kinda looking at the other clients, and their hair looked beautiful. I was not nervous at all. When it was my turn, I told Damian what I wanted to do with my hair and he did exactly what I wanted. The cut and styling was very nice, and the highlights were perfect. Saturday morning I would have been right there with all you 4-5 star reviewers. Saturday afternoon, however made me change my tune. I've always held to the belief that one has to go to a hair stylist 3 times to get a good feel for the stylist's skills. If on one's 3rd visit the haircut is good, that hair stylist is the one. Saturday afternoon was time number 3. I went in with my daughter. She needed a bang trim and a little cleaning up along the edges. Damien did a fine job on my daughter's hair. I think it looks great, my daughter thinks he could have cut a bit more off. But then it was my turn. I specifically told him what I wanted. He repeated it back to me. I thought he understood. As he was cutting my hair I told him that I just needed it cleaned up a bit because it was growing out stupid and I needed a trim, I wanted the sides to be even with the back and I wanted bangs (picture Amelie). He said "no, I like short hair on you" and proceed to cut the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks out of my hair. Now my hair is way shorter than I ever wanted it. It has tons and tons of hard to grow out layers. I didn't get bangs. Instead, he just comed some uneven bits forward and called them bangs. In the end, he styled it like Justin Bieber. What a 40 year old woman needs to look like Justin Bieber for I'll never know, but that's what he did. Damien gets one star - 1/2 a star goes to my daughter's hair cut because it's nice, but not any nicer than an $18 cut from supercuts, and 1/2 a star because although my hair does look better than when I walked in, it's about 2 inches shorter than I wanted, and not at all what I asked for. This is going to be a pain in the ass to grow out. I won't be going back. read more

I've put this review off for about three months because I hate being one of a few who give a place a poor review when everyone else gives it four or five stars. I got my hair cut by Damian in December after not having a haircut for quite a while because I was trying to let my hair grow out after a very, very bad cut (see my review for Structure hair design). I found D Salon on Yelp and decided to try it out because of all the glowing reviews. I was not impressed. I asked him to trim my layers and for shorter, sideswept bangs. The layers were not cut well (they were sort of blunt and not blended well at all), and the grow-out was even worse. The texture of my hair has changed since I had a baby, but, texture aside, I don't think with a good haircut you should have to flat iron all your hair each and every day to get it to lay nicely and look decent. That's what I've been doing since I went there, and it's really taking a toll on my hair. My bangs were not cut precisely and so some hairs were longer than others, so I had to fix that myself. Maybe I should have gone back to him to tell him what I wanted 'fixed' or redone, but I hate to risk losing more hair/length when a hairstylist tries to improve on a cut that didn't turn out right the first time. I gave the place two stars because Damian was really, really nice. I don't think I'm going to give him another shot, though. read more

First of all, A girl's dream is to have the perfect wedding! What's most important is that she looks her BEST. For me, we had two weddings. A Chinese one and an American one. Kayla from D salon made both of my days sooo special! She did both my hair and makeup. Everyone loved it! She isn't just one of those stylist that only cares about money. She actually cares about you and how you feel! That's what matters most. She made sure I was happy with my hair and makeup both days. She also followed me around to touch up my makeup and hair. I will keep this short and simple (unlike my hair): I have never been so satisfied with a haircut in my life! I told him exactly what I wanted: one and a half inches off, long layers, v cut, no bangs. And that is what I normally tell the other lame hairstylists I go to. But he cut it EXACTLY how I imagined my hair would ideally look like. It only took 35 minutes for wash, cut, and blow dry. Not bad if you ask me. All in all, I'm satisfied with: the stylist (cool guy), location (easy parking), and price ($45. + tip). And he even offered me water before he got chopping away. Congratulations to me! I went here based on all the reviews on Yelp. I will not go back. I have an inverted bob that needs alot of maintaing. Damian knew I needed to thin it out a bit, but I have never had someone razor and thin out my hair so much. 2 months later and it looks like it hasn't even grown, not to mention how much product I now need to put in my hair to control all the flyaway from the razoring. 4/24 I went to my regular stylist today to get a trim and I found out that my hair was uneven in the back and thinner on one side than the other, all of which I suspected when I would play with it. I showed up last week on Damian's doorstep with a hair disaster from another salon where the owner had changed products and color on me without warning or my permission. If felt as if my hair had been fried. Because of his good reviews on Yelp, I decided to let him make the decisions on product, color and highlighting... what did I have to lose at that point? He was wonderful. A nice, gentle man with a sense of humor and a lot of interesting stories, this man knows what he's doing. He asked me to trust him using his product from Italy and a totally different way to highlight, and I'm really happy with it. He was right, it leaves your hair silky and manageable, not an easy trick for most products. I'm happy I'm there, thanks to you previous reviewers, and I'm joining you all to recommend Damian to others. One more point... the atmosphere of D Salon is very positive. I love my new haircut! I have been growing my hair for the past year with the purpose of donating it to Locks Of Love, so based on the many good reviews that D Salon got, I decided to try it. I called this morning for an appointment and got a call back an hour later confirming a time this afternoon. I walked down Taraval (I live 10 blocks away from the salon) second guessing my decision... I walked in and I was asked to sit down. I waited there, watching the ladies get their hair done. Amazing coloring, I thought. It was finally my turn. I explained about the 10 inches minimum and Damian advise me on how short it would be. We went for 9 in. He cut my ponytail right then and there. I was terrified. He then proceeded to wash my hair and I was praying to the Hair Salon Goddess that my hair style would turn out all right! I sat down and the work began. I noticed how concentrated he was. It really is an art the way he styles hair. Amazing. He immediately asked me if I wanted bangs. "No, just layers please." He hinted for the bangs again. So I asked: "Do you think bangs would look good on me?" He smiled back at me and I was instantly reassured. Bangs it was. Swept to the left. He must have worked on me for about an hour, because by the hair-drying part I was ready for a nap... He used those Bumble & Bumble products. Never have I used such nice smelling hair products. I can still smell it in my hair! I have to admit that when my hair was still wet, I was afraid I had made a mistake. But by the time the blow-drying began, as I closed my eyes, I could feel something amazing coming up! I opened my eyes and loved, LOVED LOVED the new me! I feel so great and pretty :) Thanks Damian! It's been over 3 years living in the Bay Area and I've finally found a hair stylist that I like. I was referred to him by a couple of coworkers and so I thought I'd give him a try. I've been to probably 5-10 other salons and I've never been truly satisfied with any except for Mr. Damian Cao. He has a talent for hair and is great at suggesting what styles look great for you. Damien is GREAT!!!! I was looking for a stylist for a while since my stylist at a different salon at Bernal Heights left and I always pass by this place when I'm walking my dogs. So, I said, let me "yelp" him out. And I did..and I gotta say you guys were right! Usually, I say to these people -- Okay..I don't want my hair to be cut so blunt where people know I just got a hair cut and I don't want my hair to be too layered like an HK person. =) When I went the first time, he had another customer and he acknowledged me and said, I'll be right with you. And he apologized for not being on time. Mind you, he was only like 3 minutes late! Anywayz, I didn't give Damien my usual yap cuz I wanted to see what he does. I just told him I wanted a haircut with some layers. And he did his magic..and voila...I came out of the salon a happy girl. He's GREAT! He spends time with you and not busy chit chatting with his co-workers. He actually talks to you, the customer, (what a concept for some of these damn stylists!) and spends time getting to know you. So after getting a pretty simple hair cut at Elite Salon in Daly City last month, (I went from super long, mid-back length to a short cut just above my shoulders) I decided my hair was too simple for me and decided to try out D Salon after reading all of Damian's rave reviews + it was by my house. He was able to schedule me that afternoon. He greeted me, asked what I wanted (to which I told him, keep the length but add more shape) and got me shampooed. Everything was great, good conversation, nice wash. Then he started cutting my hair. I felt like he was Edward Scissorhands with hair flying every which way, taking his razor at every angle with what I thought was no direction... The one thing I definitely noticed was that he had cut off a lot of hair and he never once checked to see if it was even, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt until he styled it. Another client came in right as he started cutting my hair and I felt like he was rushing to finish my cut. He started blow drying and seemed very preoccupied. At one point he was checking and reading something on his phone for like five minutes and aimlessly blow drying my head. In the end my hair looked completely round... I was less than satisfied walking out of the salon. I went home and played around with my hair, straightening it and using some other product to style it how I liked. I felt better but had a suspicion that it was uneven. My mom confirmed that suspicion later that night... I'm debating if I want to risk going back and losing more hair if I ask him to fix it... After a string of disappointing experiences with salons in the city, I think I've finally found "the one"! I went in for a consultation with Damian and he understood everything I wanted right away. I had gotten some really bad highlights and he knew exactly why I was there and how to fix it without me having to tel him. I made an appointment and when I returned, he was very attentive and personable. He worked quickly without sacrificing quality, which was greatly appreciated. I finally got over my hair trauma at Hair Republic (see my review...) and made myself an appointment with Damian after my mom and sister both went to see him. DAMN he is GOOD. I called on Monday to see if he had any openings this week and he squeezed me in on Wednesday. I didn't have much of a wait either. He got right to the point and asked me what I wanted to do with my hair, then repeated it back to me. The head massage felt so good when he washed my hair! He said he could feel that my hair had been over processed and felt how dry it was -_- Anyhow, he spent about 20-30mins cutting my hair and then did a blow out instead of flat ironing it. I don't think I've ever been this happy with a haircut before. He did exactly what I wanted (I wish it was maybe an inch shorter though, but thats okay.). My bangs came out great, too! I've been afraid to get short bangs but I trusted him to cut them. My only gripe? The lady before me was getting her hair colored and I guess there was some dye on the seat..and I have a splotch of dark dye on my white shirt -_- Other than that, I would recommend ANYONE to see Damian. I've been happy with my cuts here for years until my last haircut. I have bought in two pictures of the same cuts where the style is Avante-garde; shorter on one side with swept choppy bangs, shorter on the short side. After the usual wash, we proceeded to the cutting chair. Before, he could start cutting another customer comes in for a bang trim. Okay, I was fine with that. He cuts her bangs while I waited and didn't charge her. He then started my cut and blow dry. After he finished, he took off the drape and I told him the bangs were not cut right. It was straight across when it should be choppy and shorter on one side. He draped me and proceeded to cut my bangs choppy as shown in the picture. Appears he wasn't paying attention as he chopped it shorter on the wrong side. I was disappointed and knew something was wrong when he didn't give me the mirror to look at the back of my hair. I figured I better get out before it gets worse. A quick haircut it was but scissor hands didn't pay attention on this visit. The bad: One bad haircut day. read more

Came here with the referral of my friend and she recommended me kayla so i randomly came in for a hair cut. Totally worth the price. My hair was layer-y just the way i wanted and my bangs were fixed too. She helped me wash it, cut, blow dry and taught me how to blow dry my bangs so they swept the right way and she's so nice. $50 plus 5$ tip is the most i've paid for a hair cut. I am kinda cheap, because i'm a broke college student [duh!] and she should've gave me the first time user discount. I have crossed the rivers and valleys of cheap hair salons, and walked into D Salon. I was curios what the "D" stood for. At first, I thought it was another inexpensive $16 wash/cut/dry run-of-the mill Chinese-owned salon. Instead, it was a $45 wash/cut/dry not your average Sunset district hole in the wall. I have found my Jonathan Antin in Damien Cao. I was happy with my hair cut for the very first time. Only uses Bumble & Bumble products. And the highlight: he cuts the most perfect bangs by sweeping them side to side, "snip snip". Not like those "other" stylists who trim bangs from your natural hair part. I have been going to Damian for about 10 years now and would not let anyone elso touch my hair.. I just left him today and again was blown away by his "MAD SKILLS". I have had my hair in a ponytail for 5 years and today I cut it off for my wife as a valentines gift... Damian the Artist he is took me from a very old ex-hippie style to a cool hip rocker style.. Damian has been cutting my hair forever...I've followed him around over the years and was very happy that he finally opened his own place....I live in Novato now but still make the drive every six weeks to get my hair cut. I do recommend making an appointment so you aren't disappointed if you just show up and he has no time.
