Visited several times during the Obon season at different bon dances on the island. Lines can be long (at the bon dances), but is worth the wait. Andagi is served hot and fresh. Despite being a relatively small event Guy U. agreed to be a part of our event. Da Andagi Guy's brand recognition increased interest to attend our Kaneohe event with families coming from as far as Ewa Beach. Guy and his wife Cindy, agreed to donate a portion of their sales to Our school's 'Ohana Program' to fund programs and extracurricular activities to enhance and create a more interactive and innovative learning environment for our students. Although his original proposal was very generous Guy and Cindy Ujimori included an additional bonus at the end of our event. Da Andagi Guy is truly a blessing to our entire island. If you've gone shopping to Don Quijote, you might have noticed a line in front of a tent by the entrance to the store. That's probably Da Andagi Guy. Andagi is a snack originating from Okinawa. It's actually called "sata andagi". Sata is an Okinawan dialect for sugar. Standard Japanese is pronounced "satou". Sata andagi generally means "sugar donuts". Typically, these delectable treats are fried in oil and are about 3" in diameter and the art is to fry them, so it develops a crack down the center. This was explained to me by my Okinawan neighbor who used to fry them on occasion. Da Andagi Guys makes theirs a little smaller than what I had in the past. Around 1.5" to 2", which makes it really bite-size. For a long time, they were 3 in a bag for a dollar. Recently, it was upped th 2 for a dollar. Found out about the price increase by accident the other day: I saw a sign that said "12 for $5". What a deal! I got some to share with my coworkers. At the office, I came to my senses and thought Hey. Wait a minute... 3 for a dollar 12 for 5 bucks.... THAT'S NOT A GOOD DEAL!! I have marketed at Don Quijote Kaheka many times in the past but it wasn't until reading recent glowing reviews about Da Andagi Guy that prompted a couple of visits to get my share of the Okinawan dessert, sata andagi or as we locals just call "andagi". I suppose that I've missed this food stall at this location because its owner and his family only sets up on WEDNESDAY ONLY from 9:30am to 6pm. BACKGROUND: Sata andagi or more popularly known as "andagi" are deep fried golf ball-sized sugary balls of dough that are usually found at Okinawan bon dance festivals. The bon dance originated from the Buddhist custom of honoring one's ancestors but in modern times, the festivals bring about a sense of community. At the bon dance festivals, you can find several food stalls featuring Okinawan foods such as gōya chanpurū (bitter melon stir-fry), rafute (shoyu pork, sōki soba (Okinawan boneless pork rib with thick udon-like wheat noodles), roasting Okinawan purple sweet potatoes and of course, andagi. For over 30 years, Guy Ujimori and his family has been manning an andagi food stall at many of the festivals around the island. While he's not at festivals, he maintains food stall locations in front of both Kaheka and Waipahū Don Quijote supermarkets. He sells the andagi in bags of 4 at $1 but I'll bet you can't just buy one bag. After all, you can choose between plain granulated sugar or cinnamon sugar coated andagi that are made fresh and hot. Service is friendly and fast even though throngs of people line up to place their order(s), pay and either wait to the side for their order or are given their andagi treats by the cashier. They recommend that you wait a few minutes before biting into the fresh, just-out-of-the-frying oil andagi or don't even think about popping a whole andagi into your mouth elsewise risk having the roof of your mouth being burned. We bought a bag of cinnamon-sugar and plain granulated sugar coated andagi to munch on since we had just gotten out of the gym.
