My sister and I were in NYC at Mt. Sinai Hospital and found this small restaurant. Lunch was exceptional (especially the eggplant cake). We ordered at the counter and food was delivered by a very friendly waiter in a small but comfortable back room. What else can I say... yummy! I was in the neighborhood for an appointment and I texted my sister for a recommendation on a cute place to do some charting (I'm a doctor and today is my day off). She recommended Da Capo and raved about their hot cocoa. I walked in and ordered a panini and went to the back area to do work. After 45 min I realized they had never brought the panini and went up to the front to check. The guy apologized and questioned whether I had ordered it from him (yes, I did) No biggie, mistakes happen. I cancelled the order and ordered a hot cocoa and cookies since I was no longer in the mood for a meal but still wanted to try something. Waited another half an hour- they had forgotten again. I walked out at this point. I'm not sure what happened but clearly the guy forgot about me. Such a shitty feeling. I won't go back. Forgetting someone's order once in the context of a chaotic day is understandable, twice is just weird. You did not forget anyone else's order, just mine. That is a problem. Really cute coffee shop on Madison Ave right near Mt. Sinai. I've come here twice to study and I'd say it is a great place to study. There is an alcove in the back (sort of a glass garden type area) that has a lot of tables and is cozy for studying. Pros: staff are really friendly and into their coffee. Very welcoming. You also pay at the end, which is a unique concept to me and shows their trust in their customers and atmosphere of the place. Lots of places to study or to grab a chair and sit with a coffee. They also have a big long couch for lounging. Cons: expensive IMO. Prosciutto panini $12 (albeit most expensive panini, others are $8-10) while my macchiato was $4. And I don't find their blend of coffee overly fantastic so the price jumps out It's freezing here for some reason. Both times I've come to study it's been in the winter yet the place decides to leave their front door open (which I don't understand) and it makes the whole place frigid. I tried closing the door since it was so cold and the barista said to keep it open (thus my confusion). I recently went here for a take out lunch. I got the lunch special - I picked a mortadella panini and a side soup which was white bean. $15. The panini was excellent. Mortadella, angular, fontina and I think k tomato. Pressed nicely with a nice balance of flavors. The soup was also quite good. Simple, fresh and not too salty. The cafe is very cute and pleasant. The person who helped me was very friendly even though very busy. The desserts looked amazing (I wanted to try the tiramisu but resisted) and many people were ordering coffee which smelled amazing. Extremely cute and authentic Italian cafe. It felt like I was back in Italy. They even have shakerato! Or maybe you can prendere un spritz. What I found really amazing is it seemed like there was only one guy working there and he somehow managed to serve everyone very quickly, even with dine in. The place was extremely clean, organized and quaint. The main guy seems a little stressed out but still positive and kind. The food was great - I really liked my panino, and the cookies were really fresh and delicious. It seemed they put anise or some other spice for a more complex flavor. Prices are also reasonable. Despite my constant need to make sure I have probably-more-than-the-recommended-amount of caffeine in my body throughout the day, I don't consider myself much of a coffee connoisseur. I can't really differentiate between the taste of Brazilian, Peruvian, Colombian beans, etc... or tell you why pour-over costs 300% the price of normal drip coffee. What I can do, however, is trust my taste buds to tell me what tastes good or bad - and in this case, the espresso at Da Capo is very, very good. According to their barista, Da Capo is the only place in the city that gets their beans straight from Italy. As such, this espresso bar just oozes with Italian sexiness - from the oddly fitting music (soft jazz one second, French classical the next) to the intimate, back patio (perfect spot for a laid back conversation or some quiet study time). The service is impeccable, and while there's almost always a line, it moves pretty quickly. You can order at the front, pick from their list of espresso drinks and/or Italian pastries/sandwiches, get seated and be served within 10 minutes. I got a soy latte during my visit, and found the espresso to be bold and flavorful. Unlike many espresso-based drinks I've had in the past, the rich and deep flavors were not masked by its dairy counterpart, enhancing the drink with its subtle bitterness. I can say, without a doubt, that this was the best latte I've had in the city to date. In addition, the prices are very comparable to other popular coffee shops, ranging from $4-5/drink. With its spot-on service, fantastic drinks and rustic atmosphere, Da Capo has upped the game for espresso bars everywhere. read more

I had a caprese panini and a cappuccino here after wandering the neighborhood in search of a quiet coffee shop. I was seated in the back room and my food and coffee were brought out to me--so fancy! They also brought me a glass of water while I waited; you typically don't see staff this attentive at a regular coffee shop. The panini wasn't very fresh and tasted pretty average--the mozzarella was a bit tough and not as creamy as it would have been were it fresh. The cappuccino was excellent. A good quiet place to get some work or reading done on the weekends! Oh god I love everything about this place. Having lived just around the corner for a couple months, I stumbled across this tiny Italian coffee shop one fateful winter morning, and was greeted with a rush of warmth and nostalgia from my time spent in Rome. The interior features a small bar and a thin table close to the entrance, and a slightly larger but thin seating area with ample daylight from the skylight above. My friend & I had coffee and a pastry (If I recall it right) here during a break from the long JS Bach music event at a nearby performance place. Yes, it looks tiny but there's more available space when you get inside. And I like that it's designed that way so you don't get too comfortable to stay THAT long. The prices are OK but I'm sure you can get more for the same prices in other similar places. But you'll be happy that the owners have gone out of their way to style this place in a distinctive way. I like the way they've used medium-sized framed mirrors that help make the narrow place look bigger when you're inside. The coffees have a nice presentation during the day - usually in a clear glass coffee mug and saucer. The place is narrow but set up nicely with a little bench by the front window and then bar-style seating all along the wall by the counter. In the back they have formal table seating. They have a couple of delicious food options (which rotate) for a savory dinner - usually fresh pastas that they make right in front of you, and then there are staple panini and sandwiches which are good quality.
