I have eaten at The Milton four times during the last three months. Rather than review each visit, I will comment on my meals. The chicken tacos, which I ordered on more than one occasion, were easily my favorite. Filled to overflowing, they hit the spot. Second, I ordered a tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. The cup sized soup was robust and hearty. A slice of onion or tomato would have improved the grilled cheese although my dining partner really loved the sandwich and soup. Third, I ordered Mac and Cheese with bacon. Fourth and a distance last was their salad with peppercorn dressing. The salad lacked many ingredients, and consisted of lettuce and dressing for the most part. The bar/restaurant stays open quite late, but the kitchen closes around 10:30 or 10:45 pm. Several tables are available in the back, and six tables are located outside. It can be quite dark inside. I will definitely return to The Milton inasmuch as it stays open quite late and is relatively close by. Not to mention my fondness for their chicken tacos! Came here for some drinks during october and they had a pumpkin spice espresso martini which honestly was pretty good. The pumpkin was not overpowering at all. Hosted a surprise engagement party for my son and his fiancée. The staff was so lovely to work with. They were gracious and accommodating. We rented out the whole place for the party. Great drinks, good service, nice ambiance! My friends and I tried the Keep The Heid, Campfire Old Fashioned, and Bourbon Banana Cream to start. Everybody loved their drinks, although the banana cream was the clear winner. Between the flavor and the vanilla ice cream cube, it was super! I came here to meet up with a former work buddy. Place looked like your typical NYC bar: okay vino, good sized beer on tap, and bar eats. I do have to say that I was more than impressed with the mac and cheese here, as my expectations were super low. Yet, the dish was surprisingly cheesy and had just enough of a sauciness where I didn't feel like I was eating a puddle of liquid cheese. We've been to this bar several times and have usually enjoyed the atmosphere, the cocktails, and the service--especially from some of the more experienced bartenders we've come to know. Unfortunately, tonight was a real letdown. My partner and I came in for a drink on what should have been a low-key evening. The bar was nearly empty, and service started off slow but tolerable. Our bartender seemed pleasant enough at first and took our initial order, but as time went on, it became clear that she was more interested in socializing than attending to guests. After we finished our drinks, we waited over 15 minutes without so much as a check-in--while she chatted at length with an older gentleman at the bar, completely neglecting the rest of the room. After 20 minutes with no new drink order and no attention, I walked down the bar to speak to the owner, Paul, and let him know we were ready to close out. I appreciated his response--he was gracious, apologized, and comped our next round. But as soon as he left, the quality of service fell off again. Not only did our next order never arrive, but when we spoke to the bartender who came in for the next shift to share that there had been several issues, she became oddly defensive. We asked if a bartender we knew was working, and she snapped, "He's my fiancé, and I'm marrying him!" as though our inquiry was somehow inappropriate. Note that while I was indeed there with my partner, we never mentioned our sexuality or gave any indication of personal interest. It was a bizarre and uncomfortable response, and her tone carried an undercurrent of homophobia that felt particularly out of place--especially during Pride weekend in a bar decorated in rainbow flags. When I expressed that our concern was simply about the level of service, not anything personal, she softened her tone a bit--but then proceeded to further excuse the previous bartender's behavior by saying she is "new" and that "no one wants to work on Pride weekend," as if that somehow justified neglecting guests who chose to spend their money here. We clarified that our concern wasn't coming from a lack of empathy--it was about being treated respectfully and receiving basic service. Blaming poor performance on staffing around Pride is not only unprofessional, it's a poor reflection of management. To be clear, Paul the owner was kind and responsive in the moment, and we've met other bartenders here who have consistently provided decent service. But tonight's experience was disappointing on multiple levels. Judging from several other recent reviews, it seems we're not alone in noticing a troubling shift. Management should take note--hospitality and professionalism matter, especially in this economy. With inflation making dining and going out a more considered expense for many people, establishments should be especially mindful of how they treat their guests. Hospitality matters more than ever, and experiences like this one make it less likely that people will want to come back. read more

Surprisingly worthwhile spot for brunch in the UES. In a neigborhood whose food options make me incredibly sad when compared to many of the downtown neighborhoods, we can take solace in the quality, no frills brunch that The Milton is offering. I was able to walk in around 2pm on a weekend and it was pretty empty. The eggs benedict were great - jammy, runny eggs with a savory hollandaise sauce and salty, savory slices of meat with a chewy, hearty english muffin at the bottom. Potatoes were cooked just right and nice and salty. Love a classic American breakfast done well. Service was attentive and quick. The space is like a cabin of sorts, and quite charming. Almost feels like you escape the city a little. Def would consider coming back again if I was trying to stay within the neighborhood. This place def deserves more press. read more

Since they became less busy once the happy hour is over (basically ~50% full by 8pm), we were not rushed out after we were done with the meal. The food: - The truffle chicken nugget is the best! Overall rating: 4.4 I'm a bit jaded in my review. I lived nearby about 8 years ago & still live in the past when they didn't have TVs. At one point the spot turned into an attempted sports bar with folksy decorations and I strongly disliked the change. I haven't been back since until recently this year. I went around 9 and it was very calm and chill, which is my style. The bartender was nice and felt very knowledgeable when we asked about different cocktails. There was still a tv, but it wasn't on and the music was indie. I would come back if I was in the area. Our group of 6 gave brunch at The Milton a shaky B-. It got points for being able to reserve a table for 6 and having reasonably priced brunch cocktails. Everything else was a bit of a mess. The table reserved for us was in a really dark corner, lit only by a single dim Edison bulb on the wall. The rest of the restaurant was airy and bright, but we had to use our phone flashlights to read the menu. Coffee is drip-only and they do not have any nondairy milk. The tea selection was bleak - a box of Christmas tea (it's the end of February), a couple herbal teabags, and some generic Lipton-like black tea. Almost every single item on the brunch menu has bacon and/or sausage in it. For my fellow vegetarians, your options are either sweet entrees (French toast or protein pancakes) or ordering a savory entree without the meat. I asked if the breakfast burrito could have vegetables subbed for the meats, and was served a burrito without the meat but without any substitute. I asked our server and she said they couldn't add any veg "because everything is preportioned for brunch." This feels absurd for a self-proclaimed Scratch Kitchen, and also seems like something the server could have told me before having it made so that I could have ordered something different. Instead I had a mediocre egg and cheese burrito with avocado that still cost $17. My friends' dishes ranged from "meh" (eggs your way) to "pretty good" (grilled ham and cheese). read more

The Milton is my home away from home. The staff makes you feel welcomed and the ambience is friendly and perfect for an after work drink or dinner. It's multigenerational so old and young gather together. The selection of beers is excellent. (I highly recommend a pint of Road to Ruin.) And you can always count on being fed and fed well. Nice hollandaise and plenty of Canadian bacon and potatoes. As always their cocktails are great and the service good. The Lucky Walker is delicious and not too spicy. I prefer the indoor seating near the windows. The outdoor seating on 2nd avenue isn't very pleasant for me personally.
