We ordered the fish & chips and a seafood fish mixed plate. Both were so good. However, if I could go back, I'd get the coconut shrimp because it was part of the mixed plate and SO FREAKING GOOD!! I took off a star only because the worker on Monday was NOT having it and was pretty rude. We stopped by around 10:30am because very few places were open. The worker didn't acknowledge us, say hi, or even look us in the eye. She asked us "ready?" while she was texting on her phone. We asked her for recommendations and she said "uh." Haha her rudeness made us conclude that she must have been hungover. We also saw her with her head down and sleeping as we were leaving. Overall I'd definitely come back! Hidden gem! Just do it pull over, have a taco, have some shrimp, enjoy the goodness that is this local Hana hwy gem of a shack. Very friendly service, answered any questions we had, originally saw signs for a different biz that was closed and happened to be starving after exploring the beautiful Island. Coconut shrimp were the best we had on the island (1/5) the mouthwatering Mahi mahi (another best thus far) crisp juicy fresh delicious. The fish tacos were so good the pineapple salsa my goodness. Plentiful parking. They were also making snow cones! Or some frozen smoothie. Outdoor eating area available but beware of the mosquitoes if that phases you @ all. When you go to Maui you think of a nice restaurant and in this case it was a fantastic food truck and a picnic bench. The truck provides fresh and delicious food in a few minutes with the same quality as a restaurant. We loved the fish and Cheeseburger and I mean loved both. Wow this was the most incredible meal on our trip to Hawaii to date. I asked the woman in the window what to get and she said the mixed plate which was seared mahi on a bed of rice with pineapple salsa, green beans, and a few coconut shrimp. Thanks to all the Yelpers who reviewed this place before us so we knew where to eat on our Hana road trip! Since we knew we would be doing the full circle around the East side of the island, we wanted to find a great place for grub in Hana. After looking through all the reviews for Da Fish Shack, I knew both of us would be able to find something delicious there. They have a small lot for parking and limited street parking is also available. We headed to the truck and checked out the menu. They had a special for the day that included coconut shrimp, mahi mahi, rice, and fresh veggies. YUM! The coconut shrimp was perfectly cooked and the dipping sauce was delicious. The mahi mahi was so juicy and had a fantastic smoked flavor. The peanut dipping sauce went so well with it. The rice wasn't dry at all and the green beans were a fantastic way to tie everything together. (I'm so sad that I probably won't be able to have this again anytime soon!) The hubs got the shrimp po' boy and was similarly happy. I highly recommend Da Fish Shack for anyone looking for a delicious meal, especially if you are stopping in Hana for the day. read more

You're paying Maui seafood prices for a food truck experience, filled with just as good/better quality and solid presentation! I'd highly recommend eating here if you're craving fresh seafood while you're driving along Hana. It's probably the best option for affordable seafood especially during lunchtime. If you've been to Hana, you'll know that nothing is really "open" anytime before lunch. So for breakfast, we'd stock up on local fruits and drink hot tea and eat our energy bars, or stay at an airbnb where they'll probably have some oatmeal and plenty of fruits. We learned that the first night we got to Hana. At this area where Da Fish Shack is, there are other trucks and vendors...I remember a loco moco spot (cheaper than Da Fish) and a smoothie dude too. I went with Da Fish because I'm a pescatarian, and I enjoyed talking with the chef who was also the cashier. He made a delicious cajun fish burger for me, which I absolutely loved. The fries were on point. Crispy and just the right amount of fried. Good work, sir. I saw throughout the rest of my meal that a lot of local workers came to his truck vs the other guys, so I felt like I was definitely getting ONO food here! I'd definitely come back again and try their other items, but I was starving and the burger with fries was such a great option. There is communal seating around where people park their cars...and a little tent too just in case it rains (cuz it did when we were there in December). Maybe it was just me but I had a really negative experience here. I ordered Katsu Ahi plate lunch. After asking for it to be rare I received well done Ahi tuna which is really just a fish stick. This was really disappointing after tromping around Hana and O'heo' gulch I was ready for a good meal. The rice was so sticky that it just looked like a pile of gelatin and not rice kernels. I get that rice is supposed to be sticky in HI but this was too much. On top of that there was barely any Katsu sauce on my meal. The green salad and tartar sauce were both very good. When in Hana, especially when it is a rainy afternoon, there isn't very much to do and even less places to eat as everything closes down early (usually by about 4pm). My husband and I were in town and had already eaten at a couple of the local places, and wanted something fresh and different. Da Fish Shack was about 10 minutes down the road from us, so we decided to swing by to check it out. We passed it the first time and had to turn around, but I'm glad we did! We rolled in about 15 minutes before they closed and ordered a crispy fish sandwich and crispy shrimp tacos. I normally am extremely wary of where I order seafood from, but figured I'd take the risk as Da Fish Shack came so highly recommended from other visitors, and options were slim anyway. My husband's crispy fish sandwich looked amazing - perfectly crisp on the outside, white and flaky on the inside, served with fries and tartar sauce. My shrimp tacos were perfectly crisp as well, the shrimp was succulent and not rubbery whatsoever, and they were layered with lettuce, tomatoes, some type of tomatillo-looking salsa and pineapple salsa. I was so impressed with this little stop on the side of the road. It is a little pricey, but based on what few options you have for dining out in Hana in the late afternoon/early evening, I would say the cost was appropriate. Stopped by for a quick meal during Road to Hana, and sadly we were super disappointed. We ordered the fish tacos to share, and even with only one taco per person, we weren't able to finish because they were so dry. We ended up just throwing most of it away alongside the chips since we weren't given any salsa. I'd say service is pretty mediocre too, as the lady never really said anything the whole time and didn't even acknowledge our hellos or thank yous. I have eaten at this truck twice recently. The fish and chips was very good indeed -- very fresh and well presented. My third visit? Not nearly so good! Yesterday I was thinking about fish and chips all the way up the Haleakala Highway from Kahului. I even decided not to stop for my regular fish tacos at Acevedo's on Alamaha Street. Fish and chips only! However, I was immensely displeased and disheartened when the lady behind the counter at Da Fish Shack told me "No fish and chips today," without any attempt at explaining why -- quite peremptory, indeed! As they were open for business, and their menu includes numerous fish offerings, I presume they had no fish and chips because they had no potatoes...but I'll likely never know. Maybe someday the aller of their excellent fish and chips will cause me to rethink this, but it may be quite a while before I try this food drug again. read more

The fish and chips are phenomenal. My son wouldn't share with his mother. What the what? That's saying something. So when he wasn't looking I stole a bite. Ok. Maybe two. The dense fish... perfect. Fresh, not fishy or over powering. The coating... perfect. I cannot even begin to explain the taste. I got shrimp tacos and my husband got fish tacos after driving the Road to Hana. No bathrooms were convenient and the food was messy (tacos dripped tons of liquid everywhere). The shrimp were poured frozen from a box, and the fish was dry. I know the signs say fish is fresh, but when I saw the shrimp I was wondering. We were underwhelmed for the price. The salsa with the chips was overly sweet for my tastes. The service wasn't friendly. Not many options in the area, so whatever. Not up to par with places in more populated areas, for sure. read more
