There's parking out in front, right next door is a little shops for souvenirs/gifts/jewelry and further down are some BBQ spots. Also recommended ordering the coconut shrimp which is butterflies then pounds out so you got some bigggg coconut shrimp. And finally mentioned we order the shrimp with tiger sauce instead of the garlic shrimp because the tiger sauce was his own creation of butter/garlic/sweet/heat. This was a great find on our road to Hana. It's in Nahiku marketplace which is just before the Hana. Shrimp Chowmein was so good. Huge portions and very fresh shrimps. We loved the taste. It had great wok flavors. Ordered coconut shrimp too after tasting fresh shrimps in chowmein, however it was over battered and didn't taste so good. It's was more of a coconut bread taste than any prawns in it. But still overall food is very good here. Lady at the counter who apparently was chef too was very sweet. read more

This place should be called gentrification chef. I originally Came here in 2017 and the truck had local/native ownership and it was the best coconut shrimp I've ever tasted. I Came back June 2023 and the local/native owner was gone. The new (non local) owner ruined this spot. The coconut shrimp is not fresh. It is overly battered and hard. The fish is very possibly fish sticks. She wouldn't even sell just fries for someones kids. I even saw people throwing food away. I drove 2 hours to eat food from a local but was extremely dissatisfied in the change of ownership. Save your $25 for another spot to eat. read more

Chef Eric will cook an amazing tasty dish each time. In our case we order the classic fish and chips and also coconut shrimp both with fries. The batter on both the shrimp and fish had a nice perfect crunch on the outside and fluffy inside which was the perfect combination with the fresh well seasoned fish and shrimp, nothing overcooked/fried or greasy...just perfect. The only place we got fish n chips was here at Island Chef in Hana. I've had plenty of fish n chips coming from the Bay in California with SF right there, and also living in San Diego for a couple of years. I'd say the Bay does it well, but Island Chef with its low-key food truck setup and one-woman-star-power truly knocks the fish and chips out of the park! I can't believe one woman runs the entire joint doing cashier duties, cooking EVERYTHING on the menu, and providing a great space to take it easy in Hana. Seafood is pricey, and warm food is a bit more expensive in Hana compared to elsewhere in Maui...so we shared the Island combo platter which had the BEST coconut shrimp I've ever had, fish, fries, and a variety of dips for the fried goodies. It was the perfect amount for us two to split a lighter lunch. The coconut shrimp was unlike any other I've eaten before. The coconut strips were SO fresh and did not overpower the taste of the ginormous shrimp we had. We loved that there was sweet and sour dip, two spicy ones, and tartar. I forget which fish we had, but she always provides the "Catch of the day." We saw that other people had the thai plates or other rice and noodle plates. Great variety and family friendly! On our Road to Hana we stopped and ate here. Everything was made fresh in woks after you order, but came out fairly quickly. The portions of each meal were large and easily splittable. The coconut shrimp were huge! I got the Ahi (which is caught fresh daily) and it was seasoned with salt, pepper and black sesame seeds - sooo good! This plate came with rice and fresh veggies - gluten-free as-is! If you are needing gluten-free, they can accommodate you on almost every plate (except of course the breaded fish items) by leaving out the soy sauce! I first experienced Island Chef's food earlier this year when exploring the road to Hana by myself. Only a few stands were open that day but I caught a view of someone's coconut shrimp meal and although a little pricey, I had to try it. It was the best coconut shrimp I've ever had. A very welcoming place! The owner (or I assume he is) was very nice. It's a bit expensive but then again it's on the Road to Hana so it's to be expected a little. And you'd pay more in central Maui anyway. But for the price it's big pieces of fish, very fluffy and so delicious. The fish was delicate, thick and buttery. A pretty good food stop After a few hours on The Road To Hana we felt quite a bit hungry. The Nihiku Market Place was a good place to take a break, can't miss it when you pass it. There are a few food options here, this one being the busiest (on that day). There are lots of dishes on the menu. Mostly Asian (inspired) with shrimp, beef and chicken. We've had our share of Shrimp Plates already, so we went for a plate of Kung Pao Beef. Even though the cook not being Asian, the dish was pretty good and authentic. Beef was of good quality and the size of the dish fair for its price. Even though it was labeled as "spicy" I did indeed miss the fire. Really could use more chili. Besides that a good meal. If the place is busy, you better have some spare time. They cook all dishes by order and fresh - that's great, but takes time. But worth it. read more
