The road to Hana (and the road from Hana too) is a food truck lover's Eden, particularly those with a sweet tooth. Shaka Pops is a cooler attached to a bicycle across from Hasegawa's General Store, and before the drive up to the other market. So, prime real estate for selling pops since everyone will drive by at some point in the day. It doesn't hurt that the woman selling the pops is really friendly and will wave you down with a delicious looking pop in hand. We stopped in mid-day which was high time to have a popsicle (when isn't it high time?) The balmy Hana weather lends itself well to a cooling sweet treat. Passionfruit, orange, and guava (affectionately known as POG) and the lava flow (you'll just have to taste for yourself to see what flavor(s) this one is) were our pops of choice, and quite good. Their dairy pops, particularly Maui Coffee, were appealing as well. I found the Shaka Pop mobile tricycle parked near the Hana Ranch Store right as it started to rain. I took shelter under their tent with a few other folks. The woman selling the pops was very sweet and told us all to stay as long as we liked. As I stared down the menu of tropical treats, coconut lime stood out. It turned out to be just the right balance of creamy and tart. (If these popsicles were sold in stores, I'd make sure my fridge was always stocked with a box.) I had mixed feelings about these pops. After a long ride on the Hana Highway a nice Ice pop sounded amazing. We stopped at this little roadside stand. The chocolate banana was decent but it was a little too chocolatey for me. The pineapple ginger was way too gingery for me. It overwhelmed my whole mouth. Tried these for the first time at the World Whale Day. Not sure how much they are ordinarily, but that day it was 5. I had the lava flow and it was tasty; especially considering how hot it was out. Hands down the best popsicles I have EVER had! We were greeted with a smile, a wave, and an aloha. And left with a mahalo and smiles on our faces. My friend tried the watermellon mint one which is refreshing and light and I had the banana coconut milk and chocolate one. So delicious, so flavorful, and so satisfying. Just go by the area near the gneral store and you will see her mid-day with her signs. She will welcome you in such a nice way and you'll love the flavors so much you cant resist not gong back for more :) read more

Shakapops is a great stop in Hana! Angela, the proprietor and Venezuelan ex-pat is a wonderfully sweet and sincere woman who greets every person who passes with a shaka and aloha! The strawberry-lime Shakapop was so fresh and fruity it was more like a frozen fruit salad than some chemical flavored crap you can get elsewhere. My sister and I went for the Shakaroon and were very sad to find out they were sold out. Luckily we didn't miss our chance because we got a card from Shaka Pops and were told to try again Saturday.....but to be there before 11 because Shakaroon is generally one of the first flavors to sell out. Aside from missing the flavor choices I wanted first, we very much enjoyed the POG pop we did have. Edit: Dropping my stars based on rudeness. While the Shaka Pop guy at the craft fair was nice, friendly and encouraged us to try the Shakaroon. The gal at the swap meet, not so nice. We arrived at 11 to the swap meet ready to try the Shakaroon, we were dismayed to find out it they were sold out. What was alarming was how it was done. The woman was rude, and instead of letting us down gently with a white lie; she was snotty about it. "I have one left but I am not selling it because I am saving it for someone." She said it in a snotty way too! Umm, okay, that was unnecessary. A simple, "Sorry, we sold out already," would have been just fine. So thought the pops we did try were great, I would be hesitant to approach a vendor for fear or their absolute rude customer service skills. read more

If you do manage to make it to Hana, make sure to reward yourself at the Shaka Pops stand. It is located at the entrance of the plaza housing basically all that Hana has to offer (post office, grocery store, bathroom, a few boutique shops). You can't miss it. The lady who runs the cart will wave warmly at you as you drive by. So if you accidentally drive by, please turn back. I was looking for something fruity, and had the passion orange guava pulp at the owner's recommendation. I'm not a fan of artificial orange flavor, so I was a bit wary of the pop, but I was pleasantly surprised as it was immediately obvious the the pop was made of fresh orange juice (with pulp!) and honestly I wish I was able to take home a dozen. read more

Drove past this place on the road to Hana and my wife mentioned somebody at a Popsicle stand waved at her. Didn't think too much about it until our drive back to the mainland. Passed the same Popsicle stand and actually missed it but decided to u-turn to give this place a try. She had a bunch of interesting favors but I decided to try the lava flow Popsicle. You could tell everything was fresh and made to perfection. There is something to be said about somebody who cares and makes the effort to wave hello to random strangers driving on the street. We frankly didn't expect much of anything when we made it to the end of the Road to Hana, so to stumble upon this little gem was a real treat. Like most establishments on this remote part of Maui, this is a small operation with a friendly and chatty owner. My wife got a chocolate banana pop that had real banana slices. Outstanding. The woman at the stand was waving to everyone and was so welcoming! I asked her what her favorite was and she recommended the "pineapple ginger" so I got that for my husband and he loved it! All of these Popsicles are amazing!! Almost passed up this stand on our drive into Hana. So glad we turned around. Just discovered this new street vendor in the small town of Hana on Maui in Hawaii. They sell the most awesome handmade popsicles with a number of tropical flavors. All local ingredients. We stopped to have lunch in town but saw this place first. Just had to try a couple before we ate lunch. I had the Lava Flow and the wife had the Tropical Smoothie. Best homemade pops in Maui!!! We stopped by the bicycle located on the Road to Hana and stopped in for a cooling delicious pop. We were driving the 1957 Porsche Speedster which we had rented for the day from Maui Roadsters - owner is the husband of the lovely lady that created and owns Shaka Pops.
