I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I'm not sure what's up with this place. I haven't had any good experiences here, and the food has never been good. The first time I came here some drunk old bikers were screaming about my friend's breasts, so naturally she wanted to leave immediately. Gross. Fast forward 3 years and we go in, the bartender who was very nice, stopped pouring my girlfriend's beer mid-pour to go out and have a cigarette. I'm not kidding! She comes in, falling over herself apologizing 'oh I forgot, I forgot, I'm so sorry', then forgets to take our food order for another 10 minutes. Food was terrible, but they didn't have to-go boxes so they wrapped up our food in napkins and plastic bags. I'd say you should avoid this place but I think it's implied. Maybe I should give it more chances before leaving a review, but I doubt I'll go back so here we are. read more

Da Hui is DELICIOUS. Their Kahlua pork (the only thing I've ordered and will continue to order every time) comes with rice and macaroni salad and is the best hangover food by far. You have to eat the pork with the macaroni salad in each bite though, otherwise you're not getting the full experience of deliciousness. No complaints what-so-ever. Reasonable prices, prompt service, and good food. It doesn't get much better! read more

The waiter was great but he was alone and had to run between the bar and the restaurant. The atmosphere sucked and the smell of urine from outside drifted into the restaurant. Well, this place further strengthens my point: Portland has horrible service! The girl behind the counter was totally clueless. She acted like she hated us for being there. When i asked her what were the tacos like she replied, " Like tacos". Ok then. She seemed offended that i would ask such question. Either she was scowling or her face was broken. I like the funky Hawaiian decor of Da' Hui (which was supposedly named after a Hawaiian gang). The black and white checked tiles emanate a 1950s diner vibe. The booths are really comfortable on the bar side of the joint, with your average joe tables on the family-friendly restaurant side. But if you're going to sit on the bar side while Smiley's tending, I'd recommend parking your butt right up on a stool at the bar. I spent an evening sipping refreshing Hawaiian cocktails and shooting the shite with Smiley, who was big, mean-looking, hysterical, and no-holds-barred. The man wasn't afraid to say anything, even if it meant bitching out a disrespectful customer. And he makes one helluva Hawaiian Punch. The drinks are fairly steap, but Smiley uses his hardknock intuition to make something perfect for his patrons. And the food's not bad. Being a longtime vegetarian, I've become pretty burnt out on the same old humdrum marinated tofu dishes. But their yakisoba noodles with tofu was actually pretty tasty, with a decent amount of spicy zest to it. Maybe slightly overpriced as well. read more

Went in looking for some Hawaiian style food. After being ignored, while business was slow, they finally took our food and drink order. The drinks were affordable. However the food was bland and nothing close to even what I was use to finding in the slums of the island (Oahu) The kicker was that half our food was given to a different table! So they made us wait another 20 minutes for a order of fries! In short. The food is a joke, the service is a joke. If you are looking to get drunk and eat some horrid food then go crazy, but in Portland you can do a lot better for the same price. read more

We went here Friday evening to meet our friends for some drinks and food. My fiancée and I love Hawaiian food, we have been to Kauai so we know how Hawaiian food is made the right way. This was by far the best and closest food we've had and made us feel like we were back on Hawaii! The bartender was awesome, the drinks he made were top notch. Also very friendly and checked in with us quite often. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!! We will be back for more soon! Probably my favorite bar in all of Portland. I love that they do happy hour 3 different times a day so it really helps fit with anyone's schedule. (11am-noon, 6-7pm, and 11-mid). Probably the cheapest PBRs in town, which is totally fine with me b/c when I go out for a quick drink, I'm not picky. Their food menu is really good as well and I really love their Happy hour Sliders & Spam Masubi! The atmosphere is super chill and laid back, they usually have movies playing as well and a good selection of music going on! The staff is super nice (Heather is my favorite! I've never been to a bar that serves Hawaiian, but we thought we'd try it out. Place is a little dank, but we had no issues with the bartender. Food was decent. Portions were very large and prices seemed pretty reasonable. My friend didn't care for the mac salad, but I thought it was okay. A little weird to have potatoes in it, but it was okay. The shoyu chicken was really good. Usually I prefer kalua pork, but this was a little bland. Skimpy on the rice for some reason, which seemed odd since they serve up so much meat. I've never been anyplace that didn't have sauces to add, so I would have liked it for the pork because it was less flavorful. Overall it wasn't bad. I would say if you're nearby and in the mood for Hawaiian to give them a chance, but definitely not something you'd go out of your way for. read more

I stopped into Da'Hui last night with a group of friends to grab a few drinks before last call. I hadn't been there since it's opening month, so I was surprised to see the changes and the shift from restaurant to bar. The crowd was pretty cool and the bartender was a real bartender, no b.s., good pours, good control of her bar and her crowd. I like that in bar staff. I would recommend this place as a start or finish to a night out. It's chill, the music doesn't make me want to scream. It's a good place to go with friends. read more

Probably my favorite dive-bar on Foster, if not in all SE, if not all of Stumptown. It has a seedy rockabilly / punk vibe happening. There's always an interesting mix of locals... sometimes eclectic, I might say. I'd give them high marks for their pub-grub, cheap, stiff drinks. The bartenders are great! I hate getting a drink that feels as if the alcohol was inserted with an eye-dropper... I don't have that problem here. The food is good an well proportioned. The crowd is a bit dramatic, but likeable for the most part. It's not a Hawaiian restaurant in the sense that you'd just go for a sit-down meal. So if you're planning to venture out Foster for a quaint dinner date, think twice. Now, if you want to come for stiff drinks, a very un-pretentious crowd, a semi-Hawaiian vibe, and all the character and edge that a Foster bar has to offer, you can't go wrong. AND...you can soak up the stiff drinks with some halfway decent Hawaiian food, too. And it's not expensive. Remember, drinks come first; food is secondary. Also, don't come in with your nose up or act like some hip kid with taste...that may be corrected real quick: staff and patrons won't put up with it, and the crowd is as real as it gets. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood...hopefully it doesn't go the way of other edgy-but-real and unpretentious establishments in Portland. We get takeout from here 2x/month and they've literally cut their portions in half. Not cool at all, I'll be taking a break from here. I live up the street and come here fairly often. Delicious food and fun service are the norm! Everyone that complains about occasional slowness doesn't realize there's only one person attending to everyone and only a few guys in the kitchen. I stumbled into a happy hour one night at 11 and had some amazing sliders. I've been back several times for those amazing pork sliders with slaw for $1 and wash them down with $1 PBR and $1 well shots. They have 3 happy hours and I've been to the 6-7pm and 11pm-12am but haven't been to the 11 am one. This is a bar. If you're a high maintenance person this dive bar that has a damned good cook and plays mostly old school punk and other good music just chill out and have fun... Or hit a TGIF. Great place for a good, affordable Polynesian meal. We generally get a couple entrees for all of us and eat them family-style. The picky wife and child mean that we stick to yakisoba and veggies or stir-fry and veggies, but I'm going there soon to try some of the burgers and more "exotic" things. We like that the rice and/or noodles are not drowning in sauces and the veggies are not overcooked. That allows the meal to be simple, light, and tasty. We usually get a tropical drink when we're there ('cause the food's so cheap) and we have always been pleased with the Mai Tais, Daisycutters, etc. that we get. read more

Bartender was a sweetheart, she kindly asked if I wanted water to drink after I placed my order. The layout of the place was unique, pretty much like a Hawaiian/dive-bar feel. As for the food my wife had the Kalbi short ribs plate which the flavor and tenderness of the Short ribs was on point! Very tasty! I had the Garlic chicken which is a deep fried battered and breaded boneless chicken bits, which tasted good, just kinda light on the garlic flavor, pretty much like plain fried chicken. Both plates were served with the traditional two scoops of rice, and a side Mac salad, sad to say but the Mac salad had no flavor. Plus we had two spam musubis which did not disappoint! Start with Hawaiian themed drinks garnished with fake flowers an orange slice bedazzled with some plastic crystals and then accompany that with the the worst combination plates I've ever tasted.
