I haven't been in some time because I no longer live close so wanted to stop by. Before, seemed a family was running it. Today, cashier didn't know what came with what or toppings. Was missing half my to go order. My burrito was 90% rice with very little steak, which smelled past its prime. The tortilla is very good. I see a lot of people swing by to pick up takeout from this place, and I gotta say, you are missing out - the longer you stare at the (plentiful) decor, the funnier it gets, the ceiling is festooned with strings of LED sparkles, and they will serve you a GIANT margarita with a fake ice cube that has a raver light in it. Oh and also the food is delicious. Just writing this review is making me hungry for a burrito. A little gem of a place on SE. Foster Rd. in Portland near Powell. Friendly service and funny decor making light of their naughty nature here. The food was better than average and authentic Mexican. Had the Asada burrito which wasn't huge but flavorful. Great atmosphere for people looking to go out with friends. House made drinks such as Horchata and hibiscus cooler. Cute place. We arrived on a typical Portland middle of May evening, a bit overcast and a bit sunny. A popular place on a Saturday early evening and on the lively side with chatter. We recieved a warm greeting upon stepping through the door was walked to a table. Service was friendly and quick. The place has been decorated with whimsy and fun. Food came to our table in a reasonable time and fresh. My taco plate was great and very enjoyable. My date's Chile Verde plate was authentic and really good. The rice and beans were savory and yummy and my first taste of the Pico de gallo curled my toes with a spicy hotness but that was the only surprise and it was mild after that. Alcohol drinks are plentiful and equally amusing in their pricing with the range from a classic Tequila Sunrise and Blue Hawaiian cooler at $8.23 to the Patron Cadillac margaritas coming in at $16.04. Overall a good experience and great food. We'll be back. read more

I stopped by one night with my boyfriend. The space was fairly small with a bar I didn't expect. The ambiance was a little dive bar. I loved it. I don't smoke anymore, and I was the driver so I couldn't drink, but the restaurant gave me flashbacks to my twenties when I was downing beers and smoking inside. Working at the counter were two late teens/early twenties young women. You order at the counter so we talked to one of them over the counter, She was pleasant and informative. We talked to the other when she was wiping down tables. She even put up with me asking about her musical tastes like some eccentric grandma with a boa and wild glasses. I did not have a boa but the vibe was real. Part of the reason we went there was that the online menu had vegetarian and vegan options. And as a bonus, I had options that did not include random carrots or celery (both of which have been offered to me in veggie Mexican food. No. Nayar gives the full burrito experience. They just don't have meat. Ok. There is a quesadilla with onions, mushrooms, zucchini, and bell peppers. But there is also one with poblanos, corn, and onions. It has cream sauce, guacamole, and pico in it. There are options. The zucchini always seems to be an option, so if that is your thing, are in luck. For people who don't eat meat, there are veggie "egg rolls." There are also meat-free tacos: vegan with soyrizo, tofu, tempeh, and veggie with poblanos, corn, black beans, onion, lettuce, and guacamole. There are also burritos: bean and cheese, chile relleno, vegetarian, zucchini, and vegan. And you can order vegetarian enchiladas, and there is a torta option. I went with the chile relleno burrito. I still mourn the La Sirenita one. Learning they weren't vegetarian was a personal attack I have not moved past. I also got chips and guacamole. The guacamole was amazing. It was fresh with a little acidity and the right amount of salt. Later, I went back up to the counter and ordered pico de gallo. It was also well-seasoned. I had one of those experiences where I was forced to confront how crap all the other pico in my life has been. My boyfriend got a beefy taco salad and a taco. He was very pleased. Meaties and veggies can come here and both be pleased. So often one of them has to sacrifice for the other. Not here! I don't remember what the sign telling us to bus our tables said. but if you read this and go there, check and let me know. I remember thinking it was amusing. Lastly, there was an axe throwing place next door when we went. A visit to Nayar could easily be part of a date, family meet up, or friend hang. Good food and throwing axes was what kept the Vikings going. They loved nachos. read more

I visited Nayar Taqueria for a late lunch. I got horchata and an asada burrito. The horchata was good. The burrito was delicious. I especially liked the fresh avocado in the burrito. Both salsas provided in bottles on the table were delicious but not spicy enough. Overall, I would recommend visiting them for some great Mexican food. read more

What a great hidden gem! The inside of this place is playful, fun and unique all while having a very laid back ambiance. The service was really friendly and they were extremely patient with us as we perused their menu. We ended up getting an asada taco, chips and guacamole, and an Al pastor burrito. The burrito was amazing, tortilla tasted homemade and was filled with some of the tastiest Spanish rice I've ever had. Loved the salsas that come with it as well. Be careful with the spiciest salsa. I can handle heat but this one will kick you in the pants. The guac was also really good and freshly made with big chunks of avocado. If you like a smooth guac, this may not be the one for you. I gave this place two stars for a few reasons... 1. The food was good but not great and with so many great choices in Portland, I will choose elsewhere. 2. Staff was friendly, service was quick, however, I wanted Chili Colorado which they only serve as a burrito. I asked if I could get it as a dinner, the server asked and the manager said yes. Great, we sat down, waited and after 5 minutes, the server said they don't do chili Colorado as a dinner. I reminded her that the manager/owner said yes but apparently he changed mind! This is in my top 5 Taquerias in Portland. We love their veggie burritos, jalepeno poppers, cocktails and so many things on their big menu. Their prices are great,and portions are a good size. A decent meal for a Tuesday night. We came in for dinner, took a look at the menu and ordered. Just two people in the place (important later), Prices were reasonable - $12 for my spinach enchilada dinner - and for the most part, flavor was great. A shout-out for the refried black beans - they rocked. A bit of a hiccup for the enchilada - spinach was a bit thin but plenty of green peppers and onions. Bumping a star for service. Although the owner (?) warned us that it might take a few extra minutes for our meal due to a lot of online orders, he mitigated this by offering free chips and guac. And a free refill on my lemonade. Considering current employment concerns - the owner mentioned that he "had ads everywhere" but was unable to recruit help, this was outstanding service with a smile. Strong kudos for this!!! This is the second time I've been to Nayar. I think, for a slightly-less-than authentic Taqueria, they're one of the best in the neighborhood. I'll be back. read more

I was blown away by the mole chicken the first time we went, and that's been a Mexican favorite of mine for... well, decades. Gettin' old, yup. Birria tacos, carnitas burrito, and many other dishes ordered, all fantastic. My wife is 1/4 Mexican, and she and her brothers are tough judges. They loved it as did I . Well, after passing this place for a long time we finally decided to stop in & try things for ourselves. The staff is friendly. The 8 ounce regular (not Mexican) bottle of Coke was more than a 12 ounce soda in a can. I ordered a carnitas plate with black beans & corn tortillas so nothing out of the ordinary. I received pinto beans instead; no biggie but still annoying. The carnitas looked like shredded chicken. Carnitas should always be finished in the frying pan to get crisp & enhance the flavor. The warmest thing served were the tortillas but they were heated on the grill & not steamed. We were brought 3 salsas, however, the one was so dirty it was clogged with solidified salsa - not sanitary and completely gross in my option. If lukewarm food is your thing, this is the place for you. The flavors were fine but hot food should always be hot & carnitas should always be crisp. read more

They now seat you and take your order. And it's no longer affordable as casual dining. Prices went up an average of 20-25% higher per menu item. Server was friendly as always. Ordered one to be delivered over the weekend and was nervous because even though I've driven past this place a hundred times, I've never tried it. I ordered the burrito as is with the addition of sour cream. And... it was one of the best burritos I've had in Portland. It was BIG, had a good amount of every single ingredient, and most of all, the chicken tinga was PHENOMENAL. It was saucy and spicy and absolutely perfect.
