After a farewell dinner to/at Gulliver's Prime Ribs Of Beef, our party of six continued the evening several miles away at Stowaway for some light bites and libations. Personally, I was all about the Hawaiiana tiki culture and tried to live it every day. Founded by co-owners Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, its current home of barely three years in a former dive bar came about when they unceremoniously had to leave the original location. With its proximity to Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room and the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture, they found their footing with a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, and tropical trimmings. Would I stow myself away somewhere inside and never leave!? PURCHASE(S) Don Q Punch Bowl ($38.00): Made with Don Q's Cristal Silver, Anejo, and 151 Gold Rums, respectively, peach brandy, passion fruit, pineapple juice, and citrus juices, this flaming concoction was rumtastic in every way possible as the tropical juices just made it that much sweeter. There were more ice chips than I liked, but it was a fun trough to drink out of for the four of us who wanted to imbibe. Coconut Shrimp 6pc ($12.00): Breaded and flash-fried plump shrimp served with a sweet chili dipping sauce, these were tasty and perfectly paired with the Don Q cocktail I was drinking. Stowaway Fries ($17.00): Constructed with a pile of crisp golden spud sticks, rum braised pork, and topped with a hearty gravy and sunny-side up egg, this loco moco fries dish was slamming while the slightly charred juicy pork had me squealing with enjoyment. SERVICE We had reservations, so once our entire party arrived, they quickly seated us in a cool cave-live separate alcove for more privacy. Our server arrived with menus, suggestions, and glasses of water. Minutes later, we all ordered at once, and everything (drinks and food) arrived within ten minutes. Because we had another reservation inside the same bar, we informed our male server and to let us know when we were allowed to go there. All was casual, chill, and somewhat on island time - aloha and mahalo! PARKING (FREE): They shared a medium-sized private lot with several other businesses who were closed at this time with plenty of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Located within a strip mall, you opened the front door and walked into an island oasis as if you were a cast member on "Gilligan's Island" with thatched roof material above you, tiki statues displaced on all of the volcanic-looking walls, collections of tiki mugs past and present for purchase, a central square bar with plenty of stools, and seemingly small dark nooks and private spaces where naughty things could happen. No natural lighting whatsoever while an assortment of extremely low-lit electric lights barely guided you along. There were no TVs while I recalled various styles of music played in the background along with chatter and clamor of conversations in all directions. ATTIRE Although I was actually dressed appropriately for the occasion in an aloha shirt, linen pants, and flip-flops, this place was totally casual, so a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops would suffice. OVERALL I had a cowabunga time at Stowaway, and I couldn't wait to return to try more of their awesome-soundling elixirs. I loved tiki bars, and although this was generally out of my range, I'd make a special trip or two here. My one drink was lip-smacking good, the pupus were yummy, the prices were reasonable enough, the atmosphere was stupendous, and the service was friendly and professional. While the drinks menu was loaded with tropical cocktails, an impressive rum selection, and a decent assortment of local craft beers, the food menu was somewhat limited. And, the bar had happy hour TU-FR 4pm-6pm. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. My friends chose this spot on a whim. I was skeptical going in as it was in the afternoon on a Sunday but there was a surprising amount of people inside. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Stowaway just rolled out five new drinks for summer with a summer camp theme. This enticed us to come back and try the new drinks after our last few visits were subpar. You can make reservations on Yelp, and there is also a Yelp live wait list. We visited during happy hour (Tuesday thru Friday from 4pm to 6pm) to take advantage of their food specials. We had the coconut shrimp ($12, but $7 during happy hour) which are always good. We also had some fries ($7, but $5 during happy hour). They were good and a generous portion. She wanted to try the vegan (cauliflower) salt & vinegar wings ($14, but $9 during happy hour). They were breaded and fried well, but had very little flavor. There was just a light sprinkle of a salt & vinegar seasoning. More salt and a dash of malt vinegar on them, or a side of malt vinegar would have made them a lot better. The happy hour food was a good value and got something in our stomachs. My first cocktail was the Wilderness Badge (Tequila, Lemongrass, Basil, Bergamot, Lemon, $17). This was by far my favorite. I love Italicus liqueur and this drink had great bergamot flavor up front with a light basil flavor from the basil infused tequila. It was very balanced and I would have never guessed this was a tequila based cocktail. She started out with the Sasquatch Sighting (Jamacian Overproof Rum, Cynar, Mango, Molasses, Lime, $17). This was balanced, with a light bitterness and light sweetness with mango flavor. Next, I tried The Lost Camper (Demerara Rum, Thai Green Tea, Pineapple, Coconut, Lime, $16). It was a pineapple bomb with a hint of coconut. I didn't like it at all and actually sent it back. I did think the skeleton arm and hand swizzle stick was cool. It is served with the hand at the bottom, but I took the picture with it sticking out. Instead, I had the Black Sands from the regular cocktail menu (Bali Hai Pineapple Rum, Diplomatica Reserve Rum, Pineapple, Orange, Guava, Lime, Coco, charcoal, $18). It is served with a flaming lime and sugar cube. I've had this several times and love it. It has a great funky complex flavor. Next, she had the Naked & Afraid (Mezcal, Campari, Smoked Pineapple, Serrano, Passionfruit, Lemon, $17). This was really good with a great complex mix of smoke and bitterness with a little heat. She gulped it down, and I was lucky to get a few sips. We decided to share the last new cocktail, the Scouts Honor (Vokda, Peach, Mandarin, Orgeat, Lime, $16) so we could say we tried them all. It looks nice with a bright orange color, but it was very sweet and peach forward with a hint of orange. Our server Crystal was great, very friendly and provided great service. We started collecting mugs recently, and we bought the Belly of the Beast Monstro mug ($62) to take home. BOTB is their Pinocchio themed speakeasy in the back (separate reservation required). They also have several other Stowaway branded mugs available. This visit was definitely better than our last few. A decade ago, I sometimes went to a tiny tiki bar at the District in Tustin until one day, to my disappointment, it vanished. Recently, while reading a tiki bar review by Raven R., I noticed it had the same name as the place I used to visit and, after a bit of investigation, realized that they had moved to this larger space. They'd been in business for a few years at this new location and I just now found out! I immediately made reservations (recommended). We were seated in one of the tiki booths, shown a QR code to access the menu, and reminded there is a two hour time limit due to limited seating. We started with a couple of appetizers - angry edamame and chicken skewers - as they were a happy hour deal. The edamame, made with sriracha, garlic, and ginger, were at the edge of my spice tolerance (which is very low), but I loved them, while the chicken was tender with a delicious miso sauce. The big reason to come here is for their magnificent variety of cocktails. I had a Kona Coffee (spiced rum, macadamia nut liqueur, espresso, and coconut) which was fantastic, definitely on my list of favorites. Later I had a Rum Runner (Hamilton West Indies rum, blackberry, banana, pineapple, and orange) which was fruity and sweet, served in a surfer-monkey mug. I really like this one too. A nice place for something a little different. The drinks are excellent. The Singapore Sling was generous and the Blue Hawaiian was fantastic. We got quite a bit to share. Poke Nachos, Pork Sammie, Stowaway Burger, Coconut Shrimp, Macaroni Salad and Fried Span Musubi were very good as were the fries and aioli that accompanied the sandwiches. It's got a cozy and dark ambiance nicely decorated in a Tiki style. As Shag fans, we appreciated the Shag print at our booth. Service was overall good. Order taken promptly with food and drinks coming out fresh and fast; my only small gripe was a neighboring table kept our waiter at their table for at least 10 minutes. My friend found this cool place! Then I came to visit twice in the same week lol. Love how the entire place is decorated.. makes you feel fully immersed in the theme. This place has an extensive menu of drinks and food. I ordered the blue Hawaiian, dole whip and dragon lady .. drinks tasted pretty good and not too strong. The drinks with the skull next to the name are super strong I was told. We also ordered wings, onion rings and edamame to go with the drinks. We didn't make a reservation before we went so luckily they had spaces open but it's on the high top. If you make reservation you get seated at a nicer table with couch seating, more comfy chairs etc. place gets busy towards night time especially on a Saturday. Cutest tiki bar I've ever been to! This is a fairly small location which means limited seating so I do recommend getting a reservation if you can. If not you can join the waitlist but even the waitlist can build up quick so do prepare to wait. My friends and I got lucky and joined the waitlist and waited less than an hour. Theirs a 2 hour limit once you are seated. Their menu is so cute and all the drinks looked and sounded delicious. I love a good espresso martini so when I saw the Kona coffee I had to get it. My friend got the Crystal Cove and after I tried it, I had to get it as my second drink. The Kona Coffee has: Spiced Rum, Macadamia Nut Liqueur, Espresso, coconut. It was creamy, sweet, and the rum wasn't too overpowering. The Crystal Cove has: Vodka, lychee, guava, coconut water, lemon. If you love sweet and fruity drinks, I highly recommend this! We weren't super hungry so we ordered dishes that we can snack on while we were catching up. We got the poke bombs, spam spam nachos and the stowaway fries. Everything we ordered was honestly delicious. Out of the three, my favorite had to be the stowaway fries and the poke bombs! The new bar busser dude has his heart in the right place, he is enthusiastic and checks in, but there is a difference in customer interaction skill level. Someone working at another bar recommended that if we are interested in tiki and not done with our night yet, we should check out Stowaway. 100% glad we did, ran into basically our Disney Content Creator idols, had to be a 1/1,000,000 chance of that happening. But let's talk Stowaway itself. Once we looked into this place we ended up not eating a full dinner so we could sample the menu. Well we ordered food once, then reminded again, and still at the end, never got our food. This is really the reason for knocking the rating down a star and there is no way around that. We made sure we weren't getting charged for it at the end so that was ok, but come on yall, pay more attention. As far as the drinks, they were awesome, and not only were the bartenders friendly, they were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. This place really left us wanting to go weekly. The inside really gives that tiki island feel without coming off as tacky. They have a big menu and our server was helpful in helping us find the drink we wanted. We tried so many drinks and the presentation and taste were all so good! I would only come back for their drinks, fries & spam Musubi ! Otherwise, I think I'm okay! We tried, Mac salad, stowaway burger, wings, poke bombs, and pineapple fried rice. Unfortunately they were all TOOOO saucey. I understand that some places don't have enough, but these were so overpowering that you couldn't really get the taste of the food itself, and only the sweet sauce. I totally see where they're going with it, but it was so sad we couldn't taste the food itself. Regardless, the service was really good! They were all so nice even on a busy night. And the bartender was so knowledgeable about the menu which made the experience so much better. The vibe is super duper cute! I see why they only use phone menus, you wouldn't be able to see the words. But you definitely get transformed into a different place! We will be back! Looked up fun places to eat and Stowaway was the top choice! So we went a few weeks ago and it happened to be Magic Night! So we had a table side Magic show while we waited for our food by the amazing Eric The Red Magician! The ambiance is so cool! The food jammed packed with flavor! The drinks are beautiful and Strong!
