We have been here over a dozen times since our first trip. Let me just say we were blown away then, and still blown away now. Stowaway is easily becoming a top go-to restaurant for several reasons. The food is island themed, fresh and even most appetizers are easily splittable. Drinks are strong and crafted to aloha perfection, every time! Hands down our top place for date nights or when we take family from out of town, yes it's that impressive. And don't forget to ask what tiki mugs are in stock and available for purchase, they make for great mementos and gifts. A decade ago, I sometimes went to a tiny tiki bar at the District in Tustin until one day, to my disappointment, it vanished. Recently, while reading a tiki bar review by Raven R., I noticed it had the same name as the place I used to visit and, after a bit of investigation, realized that they had moved to this larger space. They'd been in business for a few years at this new location and I just now found out! I immediately made reservations (recommended). We were seated in one of the tiki booths, shown a QR code to access the menu, and reminded there is a two hour time limit due to limited seating. We started with a couple of appetizers - angry edamame and chicken skewers - as they were a happy hour deal. The edamame, made with sriracha, garlic, and ginger, were at the edge of my spice tolerance (which is very low), but I loved them, while the chicken was tender with a delicious miso sauce. The big reason to come here is for their magnificent variety of cocktails. I had a Kona Coffee (spiced rum, macadamia nut liqueur, espresso, and coconut) which was fantastic, definitely on my list of favorites. Later I had a Rum Runner (Hamilton West Indies rum, blackberry, banana, pineapple, and orange) which was fruity and sweet, served in a surfer-monkey mug. I really like this one too. As a main dish I got the grilled pineapple teriyaki chicken sammie, which was a festival for the taste buds, although a bit messy. The accompanying fries were excellent. This is a fun themed bar. Parking can be tight so make sure to prepare appropriately. Our server, Chin was the absolute best! We were well taken care of and all our questions were answered. The drink menu is extensive so expect some tough choices. We got black sands, flamingo, and rum runner. Black Sands- This is rum based with guava mango, pineapple, and orange. A nice place for something a little different. The drinks are excellent. The Singapore Sling was generous and the Blue Hawaiian was fantastic. We got quite a bit to share. Poke Nachos, Pork Sammie, Stowaway Burger, Coconut Shrimp, Macaroni Salad and Fried Span Musubi were very good as were the fries and aioli that accompanied the sandwiches. It's got a cozy and dark ambiance nicely decorated in a Tiki style. As Shag fans, we appreciated the Shag print at our booth. Service was overall good. Order taken promptly with food and drinks coming out fresh and fast; my only small gripe was a neighboring table kept our waiter at their table for at least 10 minutes. It's a tiki bar, but I was so glad the drinks weren't overly sweet or loaded with sugar like at many other places. I tried the loco moco, which came with mac salad and was really good. What a super fun bar and restaurant this is! The theme is Tiki and they have a very vast menu of really creative drinks! I tried the Smoking Rita (Mezcal, grilled pineapple, lemon, agave) and it was delicious but strong! My husband liked it since he likes stronger drinks where I prefer not to taste the alcohol as much so The Holy Grail (Tequila, Giffard Raspberry, Agave, Lime, Cucumber and Raspberry) was perfect for me! I could drink like 10 of those it was so delicious! They also have a yummy food menu which I want to go back and try since we just came here for Happy Hour and sat at the bar and had a couple drinks and shared the Angry Edamame. Watch out- the Angry Edamame is SPICY! Way spicier than the normal garlic chili edamame that they have at other restaurants! We sat at the bar and it was easy to order food and drinks from the Bartender. You can make a reservation but we got there early (before 5pm) and were seated right away. Their Happy Hour Menu runs Tuesday-Friday 4pm-6pm and it's great value both for drinks and food (our Angry Edamame was half priced at $5, instead of $10) Also all skewers are $2 off. We returned to Stowaway on the day after Christmas to try their holiday cocktail menu. We were disappointed to find out that they pulled the plug on it after Christmas eve. Their social media accounts even said it would continue until January 4 like many other places with a special holiday cocktail menu. We decided to stay and have some food and a few drinks anyway. We started out the Poke Bombs ($15) and Shishito Peppers ($13) appetizers which were good as always. I started out with the Ailani Elixir (Light Rum, Spiced Rum, Coco, Pineapple, Orange, Lihing Mui, $14). I had this drink a few visits ago and loved the spiced rum flavor. It even motivated me to start using spiced rum in my cocktails at home. This time it was very sweet and all pineapple flavor with a hint of coconut and zero spiced rum flavor. I would have never guessed this was the same cocktail. She started out with Hemingway's Ghost (Papas Pilar 7 Rum, Lime, Grapefruit, Luxardo, $15). This was a very good balanced cocktail with grapefruit very noticeable on the nose and finish. My second drink was the Singapore Sling (Gin, Pineapple, Lime, Lemon, Bitters, Cherry, $14). I've enjoyed Singapore slings before, but this was a pure citrus bomb that tasted like it had three times the amount of lime and lemon it should have had, with a hint of cherry on the finish. My girlfriend had a sip and immediately got a pucker face. It started tasting better half way through as the melting ice started to dilute it. Her second drink was the Black Sands (Bali Hai Pineapple Rum, Diplomatica Reserve Rum, Pineapple, Orange, Guava, Lime, Coco, Charcoal, $18). It arrives at the table flaming on top. The pineapple and guava flavors stood out. It also has a little funk to it, making it even more interesting and enjoyable. We were disappointed we couldn't try the holiday special drinks, and both of my drinks were a fail, but hers were good. Service was also good. I also returned with a friend in mid-November, and didn't write an update, but I will add some additional comments from that visit. Even though their Halloween cocktail menu had ended this was the one drink I didn't get to try because they ran out of the ingredients on the night we visited. Our server checked and said they could still make it, so I had the Cocktail From The Crypt (Golden Eagle Vodka, Macadamia Nut Liqueur, Pineapple, Lemon, Coconut Cream, $17). It was balanced, and macadamia nut forward with coconut and pineapple in the background. I had the Rum Runner on my first visit here and enjoyed it, so I ordered it again (Hamilton West Indies Rum, Blackberry, Banana, Pineapple, Orange, $17). The first time I had it, it was very balanced and very good, and comes in the cool monkey on a surfboard mug. Something went wrong this time, as it tasted like blackberry punch with no other flavors. My friend tried it and had the same opinion. Final rating 3.5 stars downgraded to 3.0 stars for these recent visits. We have always had a good time and enjoyed the drinks, food, and atmosphere at Stowaway. However, these last two visits have had issues with consistency, and three out of my last six drinks were subpar. We will come back again at some point. Had been looking forward to coming here because my brother is always talking about it. We got seated at the bar and ordered our first round of drinks which were REALLY good. We then ordered a second-round and added Angry Edamame. We got about halfway through the edamame and there was a piece of steel wool in the middle of it. This has happened to me before at a different establishment, so this happening to me AGAIN has me checking my food everywhere I go now which is really annoying. We quietly told the bartender so that the people sitting around us didn't hear and they looked at us like we added that shit ourselves. No apologies. Just took the plate and left. We didn't ask for a refund or make an issue about it at all, just literally a "hey heads up, we just found this." The people sitting right next to us didn't hear the complaint because they also ordered edamame and were none the wiser, that's how discrete it was. We had our empty drinks for about 20 mins after that and they never came back to ask if we wanted to get another (we actually didn't see our bartender again after this) so we just asked for the check, paid the FULL bill and left. My friend found this cool place! Then I came to visit twice in the same week lol. Love how the entire place is decorated.. makes you feel fully immersed in the theme. This place has an extensive menu of drinks and food. I ordered the blue Hawaiian, dole whip and dragon lady .. drinks tasted pretty good and not too strong. The drinks with the skull next to the name are super strong I was told. We also ordered wings, onion rings and edamame to go with the drinks. If you make reservation you get seated at a nicer table with couch seating, more comfy chairs etc. place gets busy towards night time especially on a Saturday. Cutest tiki bar I've ever been to! This is a fairly small location which means limited seating so I do recommend getting a reservation if you can. If not you can join the waitlist but even the waitlist can build up quick so do prepare to wait. My friends and I got lucky and joined the waitlist and waited less than an hour. Theirs a 2 hour limit once you are seated. Their menu is so cute and all the drinks looked and sounded delicious. I love a good espresso martini so when I saw the Kona coffee I had to get it. My friend got the Crystal Cove and after I tried it, I had to get it as my second drink. The Kona Coffee has: Spiced Rum, Macadamia Nut Liqueur, Espresso, coconut. It was creamy, sweet, and the rum wasn't too overpowering. The Crystal Cove has: Vodka, lychee, guava, coconut water, lemon. If you love sweet and fruity drinks, I highly recommend this! We weren't super hungry so we ordered dishes that we can snack on while we were catching up. We got the poke bombs, spam spam nachos and the stowaway fries. Everything we ordered was honestly delicious. Out of the three, my favorite had to be the stowaway fries and the poke bombs! The new bar busser dude has his heart in the right place, he is enthusiastic and checks in, but there is a difference in customer interaction skill level. The bartenders are extremely talented and do make pretty strong drinks so you are getting your worth. Instead of the pool tables now they have more seating and decorated areas so it is more separate groups and private booths than a mingle experience. There are bag hooks at the bar seats. Hot take, but im actually not much of a rum drinker, and this place is knooown for rum, but it is a close good speakeasy. They even have seasonal cocktails. So we asked for fruity sweet drinks per usual. The coconut coye was super refreshing and really didnt taste like any alcohol. The Bahamas mama was stronger and had the alcohol taste. The fries this time were more thick cut and fluffier. The second round of water kind of tasted off. But overall, I appreciate the servers effort in making us feel welcomed and how well the drinks are made/variety offered. Overall, huge menu with cocktails and bites. Someone working at another bar recommended that if we are interested in tiki and not done with our night yet, we should check out Stowaway. 100% glad we did, ran into basically our Disney Content Creator idols, had to be a 1/1,000,000 chance of that happening. But let's talk Stowaway itself. Once we looked into this place we ended up not eating a full dinner so we could sample the menu. Well we ordered food once, then reminded again, and still at the end, never got our food. This is really the reason for knocking the rating down a star and there is no way around that. We made sure we weren't getting charged for it at the end so that was ok, but come on yall, pay more attention. As far as the drinks, they were awesome, and not only were the bartenders friendly, they were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Even ended up skewing something slightly, to fit it more to the taste I was looking for. That cocktail totally delivered. Props. This spot has become a regular spot for my friends and I. Literally obsessed with the tiki decor and the the tiki huts and caves. Its def an experience! The chips and guac still have me in a chokehold!! I crave it every now and then and because of how close it is, I can just pop in! (Thats kinda dangerous lol) My friend and I have become familiar with Christian (Chin) and hes always so sweet! He makes us want to come back just to say hi and see how he's doing.
