I am beyond happy to have discovered this authentic Vietnamese restaurant! It's always exciting to find a place that truly delivers on flavor and authenticity--and this one absolutely does. I ordered the Bún Bò Huế, but with a twist. I prefer seafood instead of the traditional meat, and they were more than happy to accommodate my request. And let me tell you--it was hands down the best Bún Bò Huế I've ever had at a restaurant. The broth was incredibly rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Every bite was packed with deliciousness. They also served it with the proper vegetables and herbs that truly complement the dish--and they were generous with them, which I really appreciated. My friend and I came here to grab some bun bo hue. She got pork+shrimp spring rolls and I got bo la loc for appetizers. Accordingly to my friend, she really liked the spring rolls. The bo la loc was a bit pathetic. They said 10 rolls but they cut the roll in half, so basically 5 full rolls. The bun bo hue was okay. I wished it had more lemongrass and a bit fish sauce in the broth. The pork bloods were not fresh at all. I was so underwhelmed with the experience. It could be I came a bad time. Additionally, the prices for grocery have gone up, so maybe that could have contributed to the quality of food here. However,the waitress was very nice. read more

Went in on a Tuesday around lunch and was seated right away. Ordered fried egg rolls for the app and they were ok in my opinion. Not much flavor. The main dishes we ordered were banh xeo thit tom and banh canh cua. The banh xeo was sooo good and crispy and the banh canh has a lot of protein and flavor. For drinks we got the sugar cane which was really good and coconut drink which is basically just a fresh coconut with a straw. Overall food and service was good. I love coming here for the Bun Bo Hue and the Banh Beo appetizer. My bun Bo hue is always good, flavorful, and a great portion. Banh Beo is so tasty and I'm glad they sell it as many places do not. The employees are always very nice too. They take credit card but you can avoid the credit card fee by paying cash. read more

I usually focus on the food and pay no mind to service unless it is troubling or particularly upsetting. Please be sure to check your receipt. Final total includes the 3.5% credit card fee, and it is noted on the receipt as a "Non-cash adjustment," which is all legal. However, I paid with cash because I was aware of the 3.5%, but I was charged with it anyways. When I tried to explain, the cashier/waitress said she doesn't speak English. I asked if anyone else could, and she didn't bother checking and just kept saying no to shoo me off. I intended to explain I have also gone through that trial and error when the honest pricing law passed a few years back for the business I worked at. I didn't want the restaurant to get in hot water over something that can be easily remedied. I wrote a short explanation and had it translated it to Vietnamese. She partially read it and gave a half-hearted apology, but did not refund for erroneous charge. Now that was not okay. Management is clearly at fault for not hiring much needed additional help or provide proper training to handle the machine. There was only one person who took orders, served food, took care of the register, and also bussed tables. They could have hired someone for the register and phone orders at least. The money wasn't the issue, but the practice. Charging a card fee for cash payments is already illegal, but not giving a refund when the issue is brought up is just a scam at this point. So, either bring a card, speak Vietnamese, be okay with losing a few bucks, or just don't eat here. read more

Coming from Orange County, I've been looking for solid Vietnamese food other than pho in East Bay. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this place not far from where I live! The Bun Bo Hue and Banh Canh are yummy! The portion sizes are generous and pricing is reasonable for what you get. The ladies here are friendly and service is quick. It's lowkey and often quiet when I visit but the restaurant is spacious and well kept. Hello. Had a great experience eating here. Went in the morning. Got there right after they opened at 8:30. They were still setting up, but were very welcoming. I ordered the sugar cane drink, as well as the fresh coconut drink. I was helped by someone that did not speak English, so I just pointed at the menu items. I was actually brought the sugar cane drink and fresh squeezed orange juice. While my order was incorrect both were very good. So fresh and amazing flavor. I had the oxtail and rare steak soup to eat. I really love oxtail and wanted to try it prepared differently than I am used to having it. It was good. SPICY AF!!! One of the most legit bun bo hue in oakland, with the flavor and herbs (provided bean sprouts, cabbage, ram rang, thai basil and mint). Also, legit has a pork knuckle and steamed pork cake instead of sliced pork belly. Comes with beef shank, blood cube and house beef meatballs. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant on the East Bay. I'm from San Jose, so I'm using to eating tons of good Vietnamese food. This place is authentic and everything is delicious. This is one of my favorite places to get Bun Rieu besides Pho Dao in San Jose. Da Nang Quan Bun Rieu is packed with flavor and comes with so many types of herbs. Most places that serve Bun Rieu just give you cabbage, mint, and lime. Their Bun Bo Hue is pretty good too. The area is sketchy, so be careful where you park. read more

3.5 for me, Would come back. Love their pickled shallots on the table. I love that they give rice paper with the banh xeo, cause that's how I enjoy eating it at home. It just holds better than just a lettuce wrap way and less messy. The banh xeo was crispy and came out super hot, had shrimp and pork and a lot of beans sprouts. The com dac biet is good but we got too full to finish it. Next time, I'll probably just order this instead and hold off on the banh xeo. Since both are heavy meals and fulfilling. I had a baby with me so it was hard to eat banh xeo while juggling the infant and giving her food. The pho can use a little more noodles, the meat was soft but not super soft, had a pull to it. Something was off the moment we walked in. The building was empty from the normal crowd we're greeted with (families in the corner, children, hungover young adults, elder's gossiping, running fresh produce from street into kitchen, etc.), staff is different and even the plants are different. The pricing is a different story and doesn't inform the customers on their *new* pricing model. There was always one person there that spoke english so our order this time was a challenge. The menu is very different and I couldn't find my basic "#21 - Medium" meal. Even after pointing at the menu item I wanted, they came back with another server and she just gave me water, not the drink I wanted (Salty Lemonade). I ordered a noodle soup (pho) and went with a basic no frills option since we were only here to grab a "usual" after a night out previously. The soup was lukewarm, the veggie's that came with didn't have 1/2 the variety or portion from before (back early Feb during cold rainy weather) and the noodles were so soggy they broke apart before I had the chance to attempt to stir the noodles. My broth had gross CHUNKS OF SCUM everywhere, I only ate the noodles and little bit of meat, I didn't bother drinking the broth. After reading more recent reviews, there was a change in ownership but they kept the name and skeleton model of the previous one (tables, chairs where some are replaced with no matching chairs, bowls, etc.). My husband and I were disappointed in the direction this went and can't see ourselves coming back here any longer. Our mechanic tried to warn us that "it's not the same" but we gave it shot thinking maybe the prices went up but it really changed-changed. WHEN: Tue @11am This place is wonderfully unique. My family is from a central Vietnamese city called Đà Nẵng, and this spot specializes in dishes from that area. It's not another pho shop folks! Vietnam isn't just bowls of pho. There's so much wonderful variety here and it's GOOD. If my family from Đà Nẵng says it's good, it's GOOD. PARKING: if you don't find metered parking right in front, you may find some around the corner for free spots. There was a good amount because we came early around 11am. Around noon it gets busier. Here's what I had: BÁNH BÈO NHÂN TÔM THỊT BA CHĨ (4) - $11 Little Steamed rice cakes with shrimp and pork toppings. Comes in 4 tiny dishes with fish sauce, which isn't enough for a meal. You'll want at least 10, so I suggest splitting this amongst friends so each person can try one. The steamed rice cakes are soft and the toppings were plentiful. It's also toooed with peanuts and pork rhines, and the pork and dry shrimp toppings makes this little treat full of wonderful textures! Give it a try! BÚN BÒ HUẾ - $16 (Medium) Spicy beef and noodle noodle soup with rice vermicelli with all sorts of meat toppings: Pork knuckle, beef shank, Viet sausage slices, Pork blood curd, and all the fresh herbs. I appreciate the waiter asking if pork knuckle and pork blood was okay cuz apparently those items aren't popular. I also appreciate how I was able to adjust the amount of spice level cuz I'm a whimp like that. Overall a solid bowl but its such a huge serving for me (it's only $1 more for a large).Oh and it comes with fermented shrimp past on the side to add as I like and I really like it...it's like adding umami to it. MI QUANG - $16 My entire family ordered this so I think its a popular one. This dish is served with rice noodles that have been "dyed" with turmeric. It includes pork, chicken, and shrimp with little broth but lots of fresh herbs and lettuce. We asked for extra broth because we like our noodles soupy. It was pretty darn good. There's a lot of wonderful things going on in here and you just have to try it for yourself. I've been thinking about this place a lot since I've been here, and I really hope to come back. Got takeout from here after a run around the lake. My first time having mi quang outside of Vietnam, was not disappointed. Everything in the dish has great flavor, and the noodles were great texture even after the 15 min drive home. Banh Xeo was also nice, and they are generous with the fresh herbs and veg on the side. It's delicious, and you get a lot of fresh condiments, mint, sprouts, etc. I'm not sure why some of these Asian restaurants are giving steamed sprouts, but sometimes that does not go with these soups or pho. I find a new place for bun mam Soc Trang in Oakland! Thr owner lady was very friendly and flexible. My mom asked for more crispy bbq pork and less boiled one. She said she could do only bbq pork if my mom wanted. Bun mam broth was clear but rich of flavor. My niece ordered Bun Dau Mam Tom. It was yummy too. I got Banh Xeo Mien Trung which was filled with pork belly, beann sprouts, and slices of white onion. The only minus point was dipping sauce of banh xeo. It was not authentically central area (mien trung) mixed fish sauce as I expected. It tasted as southern version. I guessed we were the first customers this morning. The restaurant was clean and nice. My clothes didn't smell food when we left. It's been at least 3 years I was back. I'll come more often to try other dishes from a menu book. read more

Today I tried Bun Mam, chicken rice, and Banh Beo Hue at this place, and it was a complete nightmare. The Bun Mam and Banh Beo Hue were bland and tasteless, but the chicken rice took it to a whole new level of awful. The portion of chicken was laughably tiny--just five small pieces that were basically all bone. It honestly felt like they dug out some old chicken left in the fridge and served it to customers. I appreciated the diversity in the menu, as most viet restaurants typically offer the main selection of pho and bun variations, but this had made hue dishes including bun bo hue, which was very tasty and came with a large portion and generous meat. I've been waiting for them to reopen for a few weeks now and they're finally open... but under new ownership. The menu option has decreased and sadly their soup is not the same. Their Bun bo hue used to be good but now the flavor is lacking. The shrimp paste flavor is just not there anymore. They no longer have banh beo or banh xeo on their menu. Their Bun Mam Nuoc Leo is replaced with Bun Mam Soc Trang and it's okay but not as good. The saving grace was the chili garlic. The roasted pork in the soup is just okay as well whereas before it was my favorite part. Another thing is that the soup came out warm and not piping hot. The pho tai was mediocre as well and you can definitely find better broths at another place a few blocks away. Also, I don't know why but they didn't have thai basil for the pho... and had holy basil instead. One of the hostess/waitress is still here from the previous ownership but the two guys helping her were a little clueless. Hopefully they get better because she was holding it down. Overall, sadly, I won't be coming back anytime soon. It's really disappointing because this was my favorite Bun Mam place and my brother's Bun Bo Hue spot. I wish them luck. read more

We were actually on our way to eat Thanh Ky down the block, but my mom suggested we go here instead because she heard they're under new management. My mom ordered Bun Mam and I ordered Bun măng Vịt (our usual go-tos when they were under the old management) and my sister ordered Bánh canh cua. All three of the soup bowls were so, so, so flavorless. The crispy roasted pork that came in the bun mam were cut into little baby pieces compared to the bigger pieces they used to serve. The duck that came with the bun măng vịt was at least tender and tastes fresh and ended up being the only thing I ate from that bowl since the noodles and soup were really bland. The noodles that came in the bánh canh were still hard, and for a large bowl, they barely included any noodles. There were only a couple of tiny shreds of crab in there and a bunch of tofu, even though the name of the soup is bánh canh cua (CRAB). The appetizer that we ordered (fried fish cake) were also disappointingly unappetizing. It tasted like it was microwaved too long because it was chewy/tough to chew. We also got a pork chop rice plate Togo for my boyfriend and even he said to never get him anything from here again. The pork chop pieces looked way over cooked and they're super little like pork ribs, not pork chops. This meal was not worth $100. I'm really bummed because this place used to be my favorite place to get duck and bamboo soup. read more

I forgot the name of this but it's was very very umami, warms the soul, and the toppings were tasty. There was a really thin slice of meat that was tender and tasty. The crispy pork belly was classic and flavorful. The whole bowl of noodle was a warm hug especially after a night of drinking. I will say it was a lot of fish sauce flavor more than normal. But I still enjoyed it. My friend got the hu tieu, it wasn't the most flavorful to me and the noodles were like regular pho noodles which isn't what I usually get in hu tieu. I used to love this place. Every time I had visitors in town I would take them here for the Bun Mam Nước Leo it was the best in the Bay Area. I went yesterday to get some to-go. Seems like they might have new owners. The Bun Mam is not the same it has a significantly darker broth and does not taste the same. Honestly it sucks compared to the Bun Mam they used to have before. The Bun Rieu is also not that great either. I drove here from the Peninsula just to have their Bun Mam and was sadly disappointed. read more

brb, my mouth is watering Okay, back and with a dry keyboard. A friend and I came here for lunch since we were craving noodles. She's a foodie, loves Vietnamese food and recommended the BBH. I got BBH and also ordered their rice cakes to share. Two words: NO REGRETS. The BBH is absolutely delicious and hit the spot. The rice cakes taste WAY better than they look (in the pictures on the menu) and sound. I kept eating even though I was already starting to get full. Just tried out their bun rieu ($16 for a large) today, and it was quite good. It doesn't look like they used any real crab in the meat ball for it, because I did not get any crustacean allergic reaction to them at all. The meat ball or supposedly crab cake was good, it have a mild crustation flavor in the back ground, and the overall flavor was good. The bun rieu came with cooked tomatoes, and a good side of condiments herb that included shiso, fish mint, lady's thumb (Persicaria) banana blossom, and lettuce so it's relatively on the healthier side, but then most Vietnamese noodle soup come with a good side of herb, oh and the lime juice add a good bright flavor as well. It also came with a nicely cooked porkbelly slice that have a good meat, fat, and skin ratio, giving it a good bite. Not as good as bun bo hue an nam in San Jose, but best I could find so far in Oakland. There was also some fried tofu, but I didn't care for it as much as the pork blood cube. The only thing that was missing was a nice pig feet with a good amount of skin on it. Cooked to tender and perfection would be nice. It also came with a side of fermented shrimp paste that add an extra funk and umami flavor to the broth if you mix it in. I also add some fresh minced bird eye chili in which brighten up the broth flavor even more. Price seem right in this economy (around 20 buc after tax n tip for a bowl of noodle soup). Portion was huge. Flavor was definitely on point read more
