This is like a review mixed with old and new encounters. I originally like this place a lot because they had snail noodle soup, cheaper than their neighbor's, and good quality; as well as Guilin noodles. This was all pre-Covid. Then I went one time after Covid and ordered the snail noodles again and I swear they messed up the soup. I had ordered it to go and when I went to pick it up, I noticed how different the whole store was, because they are now focusing on doing bakery items. They sell frozen dumplings, pot stickers, many other frozen goods, but I also come here for their baked goods. They're really fresh and delicious and price is very reasonable. This places has re-opened as R Noodles & BAKERY. They are selling fresh pasta and fresh baked goods. Their egg custard tart is the bomb! I snagged the last two tarts today and they are delicious. I also picked up some cookies - pistachio, something I have never had. They now sell fresh pasta and Shanghainese or Cantonese "tamales". I also spotted a lot of handmade frozen dim sum type dumplings - xiao mai, jiaozi, and xiaolong bao - not the mass produced brands. This is a welcome addition to Oakland Chinatown. The staff are very friendly and happy to answer questions about their products. They told me they only open back up last week. The place is very clean and well lit. It was nice because since we got it to go we got to adjust our own saltiness with the sauce and they also gave us a lot of soup for each order. It was delicious. It comes with two different types of meat, fresh garlic and green veggies, tiny green pickled veggies, half an egg, and peanuts. Make sure you only put a little soup at a time because the noodles absorb it pretty quickly (but I'm also a slow eater too so that doesn't help). The appetizer was good. For the love of all that is holy, please do not get the pigs feet rice combo. As someone who loves braised dishes and is obsessed with collagen, I was very upset to be served two small pieces of tough, rubbery meat with cucumbers and peanuts. I was so hungry afterwards. My SO got the snail noodles (interesting translation), and felt that it was fine but nowhere near the quality he would expect from a restaurant specializing in the dish. Not being familiar with it, I personally thought it tasted very good after adding vinegar. Given the few stellar options in Oakland Chinatown, I think it is is still worth a try. Bummer! Just an absolute bummer! I was so excited to try this Hot and New Business in the Chinatown 'hood. My Meetup Group and I came here on a Monday night and the customer service was exceptional! The management team and servers made sure that they have enough tables for my group and also did a wonderful job recommending dishes to us. Now, honestly, I STILL don't know what R' Noodles is special for. The noodles...The appetizers? That was still unclear. The menu is simple but offers different dishes for everyone. They also have dry noodles as well. We ordered and soon after our food came out. We tried several of the appetizers and thought those were good. I personally enjoyed the Sirloin Stew and the Spiced Beef. The peanuts to it were a nice touch as well! We then moved on to their Colorful Dumplings (which they make in-house!); very tasty and meaty inside. We then ordered our own noodle dish. I opted for the Pig Feet Noodles and was excited to try it. The noodles looked delicious and had two big pig feet's inside. One slurp of my noodles and I had to shake my head in disappointment. A great amount of noodles in the bowl but the taste was so BLAND! Half of my table grabbed the hot sauce all at the same time trying to give their bowl some LIFE! Nope, naw, sorry--Not me! I refuse to have to put HELLA hot sauce in my noodles just to give it some flavor. I simply ate the pig feet and left the rest of the noodles in total disappointment. Now, the great thing about this restaurant is the pricing is cheap and the portions are really generous! I could have easily shared a bowl of noodles with a +1. Also, the customer service is phenomenal! They are very attentive and made sure to come around frequently and check in with the group. This used to be a Shanghainese xiao long bao place but now they serve yummy, authentic Taiwannese food for a reasonable price. I really wanted the pork over rice but couldn't pass up the beef stew and I made the right choice. The beef stew was cooked perfectly! And the tea egg I can just keep on eating and eating. The saying "don't knock it 'till you try it" doesn't work for every circumstance in life, but it's totally appropriate when it comes to figuring out what to order here at R' Noodles. I have a weird aversion to spicy things and a lot of other different types of food. Yes, I know that I'm missing out on a whole world of flavors and textures and am all the poorer for it. For example, I'm about 50-50 when it comes to lengua tacos. I have to actively think of different things other than the fact that I'm eating a cow tongue that had taste buds for fear of stopping mid-bite. Wish I didn't have these mental hangups, but I do. That said, the "safe and normal" order here would have been the Guilin rice noodle soup which I feel like I've had at the Classic spot on 10th Street and Alice. This seems to focus on a smattering of simply prepared ingredients paired with a pretty flavorless, slightly murky broth. Thankfully, photos of the LiuZhou River Snails soup were up on Yelp and, well, it just looked far more interesting than the classic noodle soup. The title made me think there'd be some type of escargot deal happening, but it turns out that the broth is made with snails while the soup itself is free of the little gastropods. My friend and I got to R'Noodles at around 11:30 am and were met with a pretty empty restaurant. Approximately 15 minutes later, though, the entire place was packed full of couples, friends, families (group of 7), so yes... do yourself a favor and get here for an early or late lunch. A waitress greeted us upon arrival, seated us, gave us menus, and dropped off hot tea. When she came to take out order, she noted that the LiuZhou soup was spicy. I don't deal too well with spicy food so she agreed that she could make it mild. In addition to the soup, my friend and I both ordered their homemade soy milk which came in a chilled glass mug (so refreshing and not too sweet)! It didn't take very long for our soups to come out and, well, even if it had taken a while it would be so, so worth it. I honestly don't think I've met a more interesting bowl of soup. It came with a VERY generous heap of rice noodles at the bottom that seemed pretty endless (not that I'm complaining). What I loved, though, was the fact that the noodles, which are themselves pretty flavorless, were paired with so many different additions (tofu, fried peanuts, half a boiled egg, bamboo shoots, diced green beans, thin yu choy, and what I'm going to assume were strips of julienned black fungus) all swimming in an absolutely delicious broth. Side Note: The tiny pieces of fried tofu ended up being the only thing spicy about the soup, but even that wasn't too bad. I couldn't quite pin down all the flavors that came together in the broth, all of the various spices in addition to the river snails, but they came together so beautifully. Even though it has been pretty hot (80s-90s) in Oakland, I would still come here for soup. Last note, I'm not normally a person who shares an entree unless I'm out eating family style, but I would probably throw in the towel when it came to this soup. The portion size was so large, and the ingredients so plentiful, that I'd probably split an order of the soup alongside an order of their dumplings or some other appetizer or two if I was eating with someone else. read more

When we came, they only had 3 items available to order out of maybe 15 on the menu! What! No appetizers, no rice dishes, only 3 of their noodle soups were available. I came with 4 others and ordered number 4, Guilin noodle soup. They brought out the food one at a time and there was a 20 minute difference between the time the first bowl came to the last bowl. It looks just like the pictures, but unfortunately, the flavor was really bland. The rice noodles were pretty good- boiled for the right amount of time so that it wasn't too soft and maintained bounce. However, the broth and the toppings all lacked flavor. The restaurant also had a lot of flies on the walls, one of which was in my husband's soup. I'm not sure if it came that way or if it flew in mid-meal. This isn't your huajiao face melting numb your cheeks spicy but let's just say the flavor is nice. The bowl has some nice crunchy pickled vege, some mushrooms, three pieces of fried tofu, yu choy, a hard boiled egg, and the delicious rice noodles. No snails just a snail based broth. My girlfriend introduced me to this place and we had an impromptu date night. She ordered the #4 while I got the #5 - what I got wasn't bad but I liked the #4 more...the way the ingredients mixed together, was surprisingly good. The costs were each about $10.89 and the portions were massive! I really like this place as it's probably the coolest 2019 eatery discovery in Oakland so far. It's great to see that Oakland Chinatown, while keeping the classic spots around, still has room for newcomers like R'Noodles. Not only is R'Noodles literally new to the area, the Guilinese food they bring is not as common as Hunan or Szechuan food. (Also new: they now accept credit cards.) This was my first time trying Guilinese style, and I really enjoyed it. To qualify my opinion, I have no experience to compare it in terms of authenticity, but I do know that the LiuZhou River Snails noodle soup tasted phenomenal. Just looking at it (see pic) you can tell it tastes amazing. This soup is one of a kind. There's so many different textures, from the springiness of the tofu, to the crunchiness of the peanuts and bamboo shoots, to the chewiness of the noodles. There's no actual snail meat, just the broth, which is so strongly aromatic it made my eyes water. It tastes how it looks: spicy and rich, reminiscent of ramen, but without the fatty or oily quality of pork broth. The snail broth has a briny flavor that reminds me of clam soup, which goes over really well with the spiciness and the fresh toppings. Each ingredient comes through. My favorite was the tofu skin, which soaks up the flavor of everything else and has a nice chewy bite. Convincing gateway to Guilinese food. I visited a friend for lunch and she insisted on trying this place out. We decided to get the Guilin Rice Noodle combos #1 and #4 as well as a cup of fresh soy milk, intending to share. #1 is far larger than #4 but both were HUGE. #1 was soooo tasty, full of different flavors and textures...really enjoyed this and actually really enjoyed the soymilk as well. My only complaint might be that I really had no idea where the escargots were, I just trusted that they were there (my friend found one small one in her spoon). We only had room to share #1, she took #4 home. My friend told me that the #4 was good as leftovers but that the #1 was far superior in flavor. Overall, a good experience! Super good stuff to write! Ordered via Uber Eats from them and they were prompt in whatever needs to happen on their end to confirm my food was coming, as well as well within the timeframe they stated - yay! I had the LiuZhou noodle soup, spicy, the dumplings, and the cucumber in sauce. I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the dumplings (they were a little bready for me) but the pork meat was spiced super well so it is what it is. Additionally, just for weirdos like me that can pick out a sprig of cilantro in a mouthful of food, they add cilantro to pretty much everything but don't really notate that, so make sure to specify. The good news is it's added pretty strictly as a garnish so it was super easy to pick out. Lastly, they're not effing around with the spice. I was fine with it but I know there are probably some white folks out there that think they're the hotwing champion of the world then bitch out on like, B-Dubs Garlic Parmesan and get an unpleasant surprise with their food. Still, every criticism I had of them was personal preference and not anything affecting the overall quality of the food. I don't know why they get high ratings because the food is bad, full of msg taste, the meat in the noodles are dry, tough and paper thin. The noodles were over cooked.
