My partner wanted to try hu tieu mi kho (rice/egg noodle combo dry style) for the first time and swung by Tasty Bowl which we hadn't come back to since COVID-19 times. We got seated right away as we came during a down time where the restaurant was essentially empty. The menu is standard for most Vietnamese fare with several types of dishes from com dia (rice plates) to pho, to bun Bo hue but when you come here you'll find out that the specialties revolve around hu tieu and mi. There are two styles that are generally predominant among viet restaurants in California: Trieu Chau and Nam Vang referring to the origins of each. I decided to order a hu tieu mi nam vang kho (Cambodian egg/rice noodle dry) to share. One slight negative would be that getting the dry style (which actually means that the soup is on the side and the noodles end up topped with a shallot-oyster sauce) costs $2 extra which is kind of steep for just a added sauce essentially - other hu tieu restaurants I have tried don't often charge extra. We also ordered a mango smoothie on the side. The food came out fairly quickly and was hot and fresh. The good thing about this was that despite the price (inflation really sucks), there was a good amount of food to share among two people, especially since we just wanted to try it. There was a good amount of protein - ground pork, liver, shrimp, quail eggs, etc. The soup was well balanced, not too salty and helped break up the noodles when added to blend with the oyster sauce. My partner also enjoyed it quite a bit despite being mostly familiar with Viet soups like Pho and Bun Bo Hue. Hu Tieu Mi Nam Vang in comparison is kind of a more subtle/muted pork soup rather than the flavor bombs of other Southeast Asian soups. Overall it was a delicious lunch and I'm happy to see that there is a good alternative to the pho/bun bo hue that are the usual fare in Oakland. read more

Update: Five stars for the beef pho bowl takeout! My body was really craving the comfort of a hot bowl of pho after getting home from the airport and Tasty Bowl absolutely delivered on flavor! Flavor and hydration. I ordered takeout online and saw that they accept Venmo for payment. I love paying with my Venmo balance because it feels like I'm getting prepaid food lol. I actually ended up getting the beef (filet mignon) pho twice in a row! That's right, I returned the very next day. I add the bean sprouts, basil, jalapeños, lemon juice, mix it all up and that broth is perfect for my taste. I also love that they pack the beef raw so it's not over-cooking in the broth while I'm transporting it home. I get to control how well done the beef is. Located in the same lot as Lucky's, there's usually plenty of parking. Great hospitality and best of all 10.95 for a bowl of combination pho on Thursdays and Fridays. Interesting two Vietnamese restaurants co exist side by side. Although I have never visit this particular place and each time I had walked by they went closed. So on this day, they were open. As such, I gave them a try. After browsing their vast menu, I narrowed down to their pho with ox tail and other slices of beef, and a jasmine milk tea with boba. I'm always looking for pho with in bone short ribs or ox tail. This big bowl of pho came with two pieces of ox tail, the larger half cut tail meat was a bit on the tougher side and the smaller whole piece was more to my liking where the meat was tender and near falling off the bone. The tendon and brisket pieces were tender but the flank was tough and hard to chew. The broth without any addition was on the bland side. After adding the bean sprout, lime, leaves, and chili sauce was more tasty. The service was friendly and food delivery was quick. This is our go to noodle soup spot since Pho King is always so busy and the other spots further down International are a bit farther. We've been going here since we used to live in the area. I like the hu tieu nam vang (soup) with thick egg noodle soup when I'm feeling like eating something more Cambodian. I love the fried pork fat, quail egg, blood cube, pork slices, and I always add chili oil and pickled jalapeños. The broth is well rounded and flavorful. Perfect balance of savory with a little sweet. I also like picking different noodles for this soup since I always eat rice noodles with pho. The dry version is very bomb too. This is the best dish there in my opinion- especially for those who like a variety of flavors. My husband always gets the #1 pho combo. It comes with a beef rib as well. Sometimes we get the regular pho combo too - there's a special right now for $9.95 for a small. This is a really good deal for the Bay Area honestly. The place is usually not packed but I wish it was. The team knows our orders there. It's a very nice family establishment. I know there's a lot of competition nearby but it's worth a try! They are located right next to another Vietnamese restaurant.I like that they wipe down after each customer and put in a colorful towel to signify the table was clean. ** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** As much as I love Vietnamese food, I'm not that educated on the subtle variations of noodle soups to be savored. For instance, I basically know what pho and bun rieu are, and that's about it. This Oakland spot specializes in a bowl of goodness called hu tieu which bears a striking resemblance to pho, but the apparent difference is that pho broth is simmered with the meat. The umami-laden broth for tu lieu is boiled separately from the meat which may explain why it comes in its own container. The table was clean, they have everything you need on table for sauces.. soy sauce, siracha, sesame and hot oil, salt, pepper & chop sticks! They bring you water & napkins before ordering. They have a large variety of food items & drinks. Even fresh smoothies! I opted for the #15 meat with egg over rice. I chose chicken! It came with a side of onion soup! Had the chance to try a new dish at this cool new Vietnamese spot! The interior is very clean and modern. They also have an outdoor area that's currently closed due to the pandemic. It was cool to see some unusual menu items that are not always available at Vietnamese restaurants. I tried Trieu Chau Ho Fun for the first time and it was very good: a noodle soup featuring flat rice noodles, topped with meatballs, pork, fishcake, fried pork skins, bean sprouts, herbs, and a jumbo shrimp. The broth was very light, yet flavorful. I also tried some shrimp summer rolls and a milk tea with boba. Ordering take-out was easy and the owner was really nice.
