The envelope was sealed and had a confidential message written on the envelope. We got close to the door to see if we could gather other type of information, but we couldn't. No other signs were posted on the door/window. We even called them twice and left them a message since nobody answered the phone, left another message and nobody has called us back since then. We really wanted to try their delicious food from their extensive menu options. Unfortunately, we were not able to. Maybe they went out of business? Sold the restaurant? Who knows? They also have the business hours wrong. Online, it says open between 11:30 to 2pm, closed and reopen from 4pm to 9pm. The message on the phone states that they are only open from 5 to 9pm. My friend came all the way from Tarzana for us to have lunch together and it never happened. We went next door to have lunch, and the same thing with that restaurant. That's coming up next.. It's family owned and been around for 25 years. The prices are pretty affordable for the portion sizes. Not much ambiance or decorations, but there was some nice Italian music playing overhead and some Christmas decorations that are apparently hung up year-round. Both Thomas and Aya waited on us and they were both pleasant and kind with nice smiles. Thomas quickly brought out some waters along with their complimentary focaccia that came with olive tapenade. The bread tasted old and stale and wasn't warm, but I liked the tapenade. Surprisingly, we were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink and also never got refills on our waters until I had to ask for one. I ordered the Italian salad with dressing on the side and I asked if the carrots that came in the salad were cooked or raw, since I don't like raw carrots. Aya happily suggested that they can cook me some carrots separately and bring them on the side, which is what they did. Even though the carrots were not really cooked that well, the gesture was still greatly appreciated. Other than that, all the ingredients were very fresh and the dressing was LIGHT, just how I like it. He also asked if he could get a side of veggies and they gladly brought out a medley of sautéed broccoli, zucchini, and carrots. We were not charged for the side of veggies and also the salad, which was very generous of them. To end the meal, you get a small complimentary square of Tiramisu which is a nice little treat. The customer service is truly the best part of this restaurant and you can tell that there is a lot of love involved here. There's a sign in the front clearly stating "no sushi" which was perfect because we weren't looking for that this time. I chose this spot because I've always wanted to try more home-style Japanese dishes which is what this place advertises. We were greeted immediately upon entering by the owner, Miki. She was great the whole time! Chatting with customers, including us, and cracking jokes. It was great to get to know her as we dined. The atmosphere is cozy, good for groups, small parties, and individuals as there's bar seating too. We decided to get the butter sautéed squid, grilled mackerel, karaage, sake steamed clams, and a zaru soba each. Miki said it was a very Japanese order haha. The squid was out quickly, followed by the karaage. The squid was served on a hot plate, sizzling hot! It was tender and chewy, and the sauce with it was delicious and so savory! We asked to keep the sauce for future dipping. The karaage was perfectly crisp and super juicy and moist inside. It went well with the provided fresh lemon and mayo dipping sauce. There was also a small refreshing side salad with it. Next came the clams and mackerel. Miki said we were eating so fast lol. The clams were plump and cooked perfectly. We removed them from their shells and dipped a few in the squid butter sauce. The broth was excellent. Super light but had deep flavors of clam. The mackerel was both our favorite part. Grilled perfectly and served with some grated radish and lemon. It was salty enough for me so I didn't use the provided soy sauce, and the lemon and radish really helped to lighten it up. It was a great combo of Smokey, salty, meaty with acidic and slightly bitter freshness! It was a generous portion of fish too. The soba noodles were also good and plenty. They were served with green onions, wasabi, and soy sauce dipping sauce. I think I've had better soba noodles that were house-made, but the broth brought them to the next level. We still had some room left in our stomachs so we decided to get an order of the vegetable tempura after Miki talked it up. It had super thin batter and was perfectly fried. There was green bean, orange sweet potato, Japanese sweet potato, eggplant (my favorite), and whole shiitake mushroom (second favorite). The dipping sauce was super salty, as it should be, and I sipped it lightly while eating the shiitake mushroom. Overall a light and comforting meal. It felt healthy and soothing, just like home. It's not the cheapest place, but it is worth it because you cant find many restaurants serving these items nearby! I'm ready to go back to try the sautéed mushrooms (Miki's favorite), curry (Miki recommended), agedashi tofu (another recommendation) and basically everything else!
