Oliva, Oliva, Oliva, what has happened to you? Where are you guys? My friend and I decided to go to this lovely restaurant that we have been to before. We got there exactly at 12 noon on the 7th of this month and noticed the restaurant was closed. Locked with a notice on the door. The envelope was sealed and had a confidential message written on the envelope. We got close to the door to see if we could gather other type of information, but we couldn't. No other signs were posted on the door/window. We even called them twice and left them a message since nobody answered the phone, left another message and nobody has called us back since then. We really wanted to try their delicious food from their extensive menu options. Unfortunately, we were not able to. Maybe they went out of business? Sold the restaurant? Who knows? They also have the business hours wrong. Online, it says open between 11:30 to 2pm, closed and reopen from 4pm to 9pm. The message on the phone states that they are only open from 5 to 9pm. My friend came all the way from Tarzana for us to have lunch together and it never happened. We went next door to have lunch, and the same thing with that restaurant. That's coming up next.. This place was rather busy and popular with the older crowd. The portions were decent sized and the prices were a bit elevated as well. The service was wonderful, we had a party of 12 that turned into 14 and they were accommodating. The 2 Salads we had were decent. The caesars, salad was nothing to rave about, but good portion for a half, and only $4 more for full. I had the spaghetti mare with seafood and it was supposed to be spicy and it was not. I asked for red pepper Flakes and that did help. My friend had the brisket which was actually short ribs and she said it was ok but didn't finish it. We shared the chocolate cake and it was rich! Served with a side of homemade whipped cream. I also took a picture of the chicken marsala and it looks really good. The other people at the table had pizza and other dishes and they seemed to enjoy it as they finished everything. Volare! That is, fly, don't run, to try this amazing hidden gem of an Italian restaurant. I had no idea it existed, but when we were coming back from another spot in Sherman Oaks we passed it. I love Italian food so I looked it up here on Yelp and was impressed with what I saw and made a reservation right away. Oliva serves lunch every day from 11 to 2, which is perfect for us. It took us only 20 minutes to get there and we found free parking right out in front on Van Nuys Boulevard. Easy! Once inside I was bowled over by how pretty it is and how like the trattorias I frequented all over Italy. I can only imagine how it glitters and sparkles at night. It is a large space with multiple seating areas, a glorious bar, and an old fashioned pizza oven, so we could watch them make pizza and their home made bread, which they bring to the table gratis, with their own bespoke olive oil and vinegars from Italy. Our carer, Ricardo, spoke perfect Italian and I did my best to reply in kind. Overhead was all the best Italian musical hits that are familiar and popular here, which I appreciate. I like the atmosphere of a restaurant to reflect and enhance the cuisine. Everything got better and better from the minute we arrived. We got to pick our own seats, as this is the time of day when people are usually in between meals, especially on weekend days. We chose to sit in a cheerful spot, bathed in daylight through the spotless windows. Everything is pristine and immaculate -- even the ceilings (see my pictures). There are so many vegetarian options for me on the menu that I know I will have to return again and again to try them all. Every single thing we ordered was superb -- really, the best of its kind. Ricardo was the perfect host. He seemed to appear as if by magic when we even thought about asking for something and was so polite, that we realized how rare this kind of professional courtesy is anywhere in America these days. In Europe, restaurant service is a trained and valued profession and Ricardo embodied that approach when taking care of us. I had to contain my joy and almost squealed when I saw our two desserts (see my photos). First class everything: top quality linens, flatware, glasses, stone floor, hand painted murals, lights twinkling elegantly all over the main rooms and a wine selection at the bar that looked brilliantly curated. Some of the best coffee I have had in ages (Danesi), too. There is no doubt in my mind that Oliva Trattoria can rival the best of the West Side famous Italian places that we all make the obligatory trek to at some point. We came here for my birthday dinner! I am paralyzed in a power wheelchair but the staff was fantastic. Mike the owner and everyone was Incredible. I love the ambience. I love the location and the vibe. I got busy socializing and I did not take pictures of the food at the table. I apologize, but everything was truly epic! I started off with a glass of water which was refreshing and great! I had 2 dirty martinis with stuffed blue cheese, olives, which they didn't have but they did it for me and they were fantastic and so are the drinks! For appetizers, we ordered the calamari which was fantastic, the Procuitta with burrata & melon was excellent. The meatballs were delicious just absolutely epic! The oven was not working, so we're not able to unfortunately try any of the pizza. The Ghnocchi, fettuccine fungi, lamb. Mashed potatoes. I had a few things that were off the menu. I don't know. I forgot what they were but they were delicious also! For dessert, cappuccino crème brûlée was epic so was the tiramisu and the chocolate cake. They actually have an incredible dessert menu! I visited Olivia Trattoria for the first time this week. Went on a Monday for a birthday dinner. Being that it was a Monday it was not very busy which ended up being a great thing. On a Monday you can tell that they get regulars and you can hear some of the conversations with the staff and the tables and it just makes you feel like this is a great Italian restaurant. The staff was absolutely amazing. So friendly and so accommodating. If you need any adjustment to a dish they were more than welcome to trying to make it possible. I started with an interesting and tasty broccoli soup. I envisioned broccoli cheddar soup. Got mashed Broccoli. I enjoyed it and it was a pleasant surprise. My main course was a special requested spicy Italian sausage pasta with sun dried tomatoes. It was flavorful and delicious. We also ordered a vegan aglio olio that I didn't try but was told it was very good. The absolute star dish that did try and wished I had ordered was the branzino filet. I should have known it would be good when the waiter smiled when it was ordered. It was the lightest most flavorful piece of fish I've had in a while. Served on an eggplant puree. Simply fantastic. We returned while on vacation after living elsewhere for many years. Unfortunately, this dining experience was a 180 from last time. Hardly any tables were occupied, which we thought was a bit strange as it was 6:00 on a weekday, close to Ventura Blvd. The menus were sticky and hadn't been wiped down in a while. A bit yuck. Bread basket was pathetically stocked with odds and ends of various types of bread. Waitstaff was quite forgetful with our orders, and completely forgot butter, a salad, refills, a vegetable that was supposed to come on a plate, and general attention to our table. What a super wonderful meal! From the moment we walked in, we felt like we were stepping into a tree Italian Trattoria. Such a cozy warm family vibe. We had a reservation and were greeted and seated immediately. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I struggled to figure out what I wanted to eat. The great thing is we were a large party and my family loves to share so we're able to taste several dishes. The pizzas look delicious and they certainly were. My favorite was definitely the carbonara, linguine vongole, spaghetti mare and the lasagna. We asked for a half lasagna kids portion and and wish we would've ordered the full thing since it tasted so good. They also have a Cacio de Pepe in a cheese wheel. I can't wait to go back and try it. Top notch service! We were treated like VIPs. We all ordered from the off menu specials. The ambiance was nice and we were off to the corner next to the bar so we had a lot of privacy and it was easy to talk and hear each other's conversations. We started off with a calamari salad and it was interesting. We usually get the calamari fritti as an appetizer and this time we decided to have it in a salad. It was delicious! The Ossobuco dish was AMAZING! It was so tender and delicious! I would recommend this dish! The Olivia's Famous Italian Brisket Special was also very tender and delicious so we would definitely order this again as well. The carbonara was what I ordered and it was yummy but honestly I've had better, especially just coming back from Italy I was hoping for the same kind of level of pasta but it was just ok. I loved the crispy pancetta, but the pasta definitely needed a little more flavor to it. The disappointing dish was the cacio e pepe. It was a favorite dish of one person in our party and she didn't enjoy it at all. Not enough flavor, it was bland and it came out looking so plain not even with a garnish to make it look appetizing. She does not recommend this dish. All in all, we would come back again but we would definitely get the meat dishes and not the pasta. I just ate there for my birthday, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The server, Michele, was truly thoughtful and attentive. He made my birthday feel special. We tried an authentic Italian restaurant today and were blown away. The fresh bread alone told us this place was special. I had the fettuccine funghi , and I don't even like mushrooms, but I would absolutely eat them again here. The pasta was perfect and full of flavor. My partner got the spaghetti with meatballs, and those meatballs were next-level. They literally melt in your mouth , you have to try them. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. Since I was last there, the place has been remodeled. Which is a good thing. Granted that was six years ago. My friend went with the Spaghetti Mare. A day later he texted me to say it was the best he ever had and the food was amazing, i.e he was still talking about it. We go to a lot of Italian restaurants in the area, so that should tell you something. You can read the details on the site, and I included a pic. You will have leftovers. I went with the Vongole. I really enjoyed it. I appreciated they could remove the garlic sauce, due to a garlic intolerance. The dish was still superb. Serving size big. That said, I do wish they gave me a tiny fork you would use to remove the clam meat. I almost went with the Scampi Allá Griglia. However my server did not recommend it, saying it reminded him of just shrimp on top of lettuce with mashed potatoes. Now granted it was rosemary and not mashed, i got his drift. It also doesn't have lettuce, so i assume its like veggies. Anyway when your server basically says dont go there you listen. The bread they give you is awful. Vengole is made to have bread for Dipping. This wasnt it. If my dog was with me, he would enjoy the bread. Probably four paws up. Service is great. Parking is street only, I didnt see valet. This restaurant was recommended by a friend. We were able to make last minute reservations on a Friday night for 6 people, which was wonderful. The service was excellent and the food was even better. We got the calamari, piccata chicken and chicken Parmesan. The calamari batter is so light that you can actually taste the flavor of the squid. It was absolutely delicious. The arrabbiata sauce was the best I've ever had. The picatta chicken was equally just as delicious. The capers are not overly salty and the lemon sauce is extremely flavorful and probably the best piccata I've had in a while. The chicken Parmesan, which is not on their menu, was also delicious. Again, the arrabbiata sauce compliments the chicken perfectly. Everything was cooked to perfection. The service couldn't have been any better. Portions are very generous. Food: - Fettucine Shrimp Alfredo - Fettuccine Fungi - Chocolate Cake Ala Mode Fettucine Shrimp Alfredo wasn't on the menu but the chef accommodated my daughter's order. Just $10 more. My daughter likes it. However I find the Fettucine Fungi seasoned too much that it is almost salty. It would be nice if there was bread to help with it but none. They only asked if we needed more bread after we are done eating. It feels like they didn't want to give them out. The dessert is good. The ice cream complimented the cake. My daughter told 2 people it's my birthday but they didn't acknowledge it. It just shows they didn't want to give free dessert. We had a FABULOUS dinner tonight at Oliva Trattoria, and I couldn't wait to get home to post this review. First of all, the ambience is wonderful! Casual and easy, and very comfortable. The bread they serve to each table was just out of the oven and was sensational, and the Oliva Trattoria brand of olive oil and balsamic vinegar made for a delicious treat. I had a wonderful Caesar salad and my wife had an arugula salad that she said was delicious. For our main courses, I had the pepperoni/salami pizza which was one of the best tasting pizzas I've had in L.A., and my wife had the chicken milanese which she said was outstanding. As great as the food was, the service was even better. Our waitperson, (I believe her name was Nikita, but I can't be certain), took care of our every need and we never had to wait for anything. She was very welcoming and friendly, which really made our dining experience that much better! The service at lunch was unbelievably bad. We had reservations for ladies lunch for 16 . There was one person at the restaurant who was the waiter, bus boy, bartender .Also doing take out orders. And serving at two other tables. It was a horrible experience. Since the manager knew about the luncheon, he should have made sure to have a second employee at the restaurant. The food was delicious and the wait staff were very attentive. My husband and I were catching up with an old time friend. He's Italian and highly recommended the place. The food is classic Italian (like his dad used to make) and the restaurant is old style as well, with white tablecloths and a more quiet atmosphere that is great for conversations. We ordered a prosciutto pizza and calamari for appetizers. Our friend got the bean and pasta soup. I've always enjoyed meals here - maybe been there three or four times. Went last Saturday night, reservation at six. No issues getting seated, no issues with the wait person, drinks right away and order taken right away. We split the large Caesar and that came right away and was very good. I ordered the chicken Milanese and my friend had some other chicken dish. Arrived in a timely fashion. My dish was fine - a bit dry on the chicken, but it was tasty, the broccoli was good and so were the potatoes. Check comes, my friend is treating. Nice. She pays the check. All good. About ten minutes later, our server comes back with a VOID slip on the check. Turns out the computer accidentally (!) charged her for the previous check so they voided out the sale. Now, depending on the bank or whether it's a debit card, that charge can take three to five days to fall off. She has to pay again - she does, not happily, but she has the VOID slip should there be any issues. Five minutes later, the hostess comes over and asks us to leave to free up the table. We've been there about eighty minutes, ten of which were spent because of the check issue, which was their fault, not ours. Mindy you, we were about to leave anyway, but her coming to a table and asking a party to leave after eighty minutes was outrageous. My friend said she would never come back. The prices are way too high to treat people like that. I shan't be back either. That said, it was packed on Saturday night so the clearly do not care. Part of me thinks some of the entitled ninnies who live in Sherman Oaks like to be treated poorly. I've given three stars because the food was fine. Plenty of seating. Very tasty bread and oil / vinegar. I had the special, it was ok. In fact there was a few specials, and what I ordered I was originally told it wasnt available. After some discussion between staff they said it was available. What I ordered was a baked pasta with a lot of Parmesan on top. Nothing special about it. Wife had broccoli soup, and seafood stuffed raviolis, dessert , tiramisu and a cappuccino. She enjoyed it. I have passed by this place several times and finally took the time to come in today - so glad I did!! It truly feels like a family owned restaurant. The first thing to come out is a warm bread basket with ciabatta, garlic knots, and focaccia which comes with a side of an amazingly fresh bruschetta. Couldn't believe this was their take on house bread and oil! We ordered the the seafood di mare and pappardelle tartufo and they both came out very hot which was great.
