I recently tried this desserts place again when I was in Scarborough as it had been a few years since my last visit. This location is further out in the east end compared to the Baldwin location in Kensington Market but the parking here is free since it's in a plaza in the suburbs and the overall experience is better. I instantly noticed how clean and open the space was compared to the Baldwin location, which is pretty cramped. The display cases here showed their many cake flavours and macarons nicely. Looking at these while waiting in line helped to pass the time. Off to the other side of the cash register was their selection of cookies and next to it was a large freezer of ice cream tubs. I loved how stocked this location was compared to the Baldwin location - probably because this is the original one. I came here on a weekday afternoon, thinking that it might be less busy - not too bad as there were about 3 people in front of me and 2 others joined behind me soon after. It took about 20 minutes though before I was able to get my cake slices as there was only one person working at the cash register and I had the misfortune that 2 out of 3 of the customers in front of me were picking up their cake orders. This meant that the one person working there had to retrieve the cake orders from the kitchen, then assemble the boxes for the cakes, and work the register. I wasn't in a rush that day but an extra set of hands probably would have helped to keep the flow of customers going. I had already tried their mango cheesecake at their Baldwin location the week before, so I came to this one specifically for their matcha crepe cake and 3:15 slices since these two were sold out at the other location. I also ended up getting the chips and chunks cookie while paying at the register. The cake slices were about $7 and $8 each and the cookie was $3. The delicious and not too sweet cake flavours made up for the wait! The matcha crepe cake was perfect for matcha lovers like my husband and I - strong flavour and loved the delicate crepe layers. The 3:15 cake had a more subtle milk tea flavour in comparison but we enjoyed it and it paired nicely with an evening tea. The chips and chunks cookie was a good balance of being sweet with some hint of saltiness from the chips bits in some bites. I'll definitely go back to try more of their cake, cookie, and macaron flavours! read more

First of all, when you get to the plaza where the lab is situated, there are 2 sides of parking. One on the bakery side and the other on the cafe side. The cafe side very narrow in terms of the driveway and it's usually a bit of a mess. I prefer to park on the cake side but on the road if there are no spots available. I have now tried several of their cakes. Gold thorn - durian mousse. It turns out for my family, they like the fruit so much that they prefer to have the fruit over the cake. Nonetheless it was a very nice creation with a cute thorn top and nice spongey cake inside. diamond - dark chocolate ganache - this has got to be my favourite. It's decadent but not heavy and not ultra sweet. The small diamond is a white chocolate piece I believe. 24k mango cheesecake - I think this was our least favourite. It's not very cheesy and taste more like the dried mango fruit. Maybe just not our thing. 3:15 - coffee and ovaltine flavours - my family favourite. It's exceptionally done with HK influenced flavours and definitely a specialty you can't find anywhere else. tiramisu - one of the best you will ever try with a light crunch as the bottom piece. Plus, on top of that he is Chinese and also the winner of Masterchef Canada! I ordered the 24K gold mango cheesecake through ubereats. The cake had 4 layers: cracker crust, cheesecake, mango filling and mousse on top. It also comes with 3 mango macarons as well! It was very delicious, not too sweet or tart. Perfect balance! The only minor flaw, is the cracker crust. Some the crust was still stuck on the box after cutting. So I couldn't get a clean cut for each slice. I had to scrape it out from a spoon. I recently ordered the Lunar New Year macarons and they were SO so cute, and they had special limited edition flavours! Yes in the same plaza we have the Daan Go Cake Lab! I placed an order for an afternoon tea set, pastries (2 cakes), and a box of macarons. It turns out that to pick up the afternoon tea set you have to go next door to the Cafe but you can pick up the other stuff at the Lab. This is where you can check out the really cute concoctions. I think they generally recommend ordering stuff ahead of time because they can sell out. When we got here at around 2:30pm, it looked like there were still macarons and cake slices in the window. Since I had pre-ordered, they had my order packaged in a different fridge. I had an order for the Tira-Meow-Su and the Cheese Fromage. Both are really a delight to the eyes. Definitely the perfect gift as a pick me up for someone. I'm not a huge fan of tiramisu in general but this one was pretty good. The cake didn't come across as soggy. It turns out the cat is a marshmallow! I don't know how they shaped it to be so cute. The cheesecake was lime flavoured. I didn't care for this one as much but it had interesting textures. Delivery of beautiful cakes with unique Asian-inspired flavours? Yes please! Despite having seen their products at special events and on social media, it took all the way into a global pandemic for me to actually try their items for myself. I didn't go for the popular box of macarons and instead got two cakes to remotely celebrate Mother's Day at a distance with my maternal figures. I went with their Mother's Day special and the 3:15 cake, but unfortunately in the pictures you see how they did not survive delivery very well. The cakes had jumped in the box and suffered shift, slip, and crack which was significantly disappointing given the price paid for product and delivery. Fortunately when I reached out to them on this the DaanGo team was helpful and noted my concerns, and encouraged me to give them another chance! Eventually I went back for another cake to celebrate my grandfather's birthday. The longevity cake stood out as the obvious choice and the ability to choose the interior flavour was great to customize for personal preference. The decoration on top looked really good and was definitely photo-ready, with a bright red fondant layer that looked so celebratory. While the cake was delicious, the decorations were mostly fondant and a super thick layer too - served the purpose to hold shape for a long photo session but didn't taste like much beyond sugar. The peach shaped decor on top was also completely solid, rock-hard fondant that just get set aside and are not consumed - a real disappointment for their size as it became a huge waste after a few photos. I can't speak for all the cakes since they were gifted away, but I was happy with their unique Asian-inspired flavours. The cakes are relatively light and have a variety of flavour notes - not all of them are apparent but the effort is there and if you try different parts of each carefully you'll taste what you've paid for. The detail on each cake is meticulously done and a lot of effort is put into creating the product and ensuring it is aesthetically pleasing with consistent output. The house-made ice cream pints are a treat if you're looking for something unique. Flavours were easily identifiable and the ice cream was super duper creamy - a little scoop goes a long way! I'll be back for more ice cream in the future, but will probably hold back on cakes and macarons but for special occasions where I'm looking for a centerpiece dessert or showy gift. The flavours are great and unique but unfortunately this won't be my top bakery of choice in town because I still can't justify paying the significant premium for cuteness. read more

Oh man what a beautiful cake..(I'm talking about "Gold Thorn"- the durian shaped cake). It was a bit on the expensive side at $42 and I was a bit surprised by how small it was when arriving in store. But it fed a family of 8 quite nicely, albeit we had small slices, and I would probably opt for a larger cake for a group that size in future. The smell of durian filled the air shortly after opening the adorably patterned cake box, and the cake itself was absolutely delicious. They did not skimp on the ingredients - it tasted very much like durian in cake form with lots of durian puree/mousse. There is a crispy and crumbly base that was also very yummy - like the base of a cheesecake. I read another review that the stem of the durian was connected with a toothpick, which could be dangerous, but I think it is now connected using a piece of uncooked pasta, much safer. Just wanted to drop by and say that the 3:15 cake from here is delicious! $40 might seem expensive for its size but the cake is thiCccCk and we were able to divide it into 8 slices. 3:15 has strong notes of HK milk tea and coffee and the cake itself is not too sweet. My mom, who usually doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, even helped herself to a second serving! I watched Christopher Siu on MC Canada and was excited to hear about his bake shop opening up! We rarely go down to Scarborough so when we finally decided to make the trip down, it was a big deal. Pictures on FB made it even more tempting. The shop is on the north side of the plaza. The plaza itself reminding me of my childhood days (a LONG time ago). The shop itself is minimally decorated but you're drawn to the super cute macarons. I love the Asian inspired flavours like roasted milk tea and Vietnamese coffee. We also got a citron and strawberry for the kiddos. While the characters are super cute and the creams are quite delicious, the shells are disappointingly chewy in texture. We have yet to find a macaron in the GTA that is comparable to what we've had in Paris. $30 for 9 macarons... we probably won't go back for these unless we get them for friends? Even then, probably not because the texture isn't ideal. The cake flavours really intrigued us to try too. We ended up getting the 3:15 which is HK tea flavoured mousse? and sponge cake. We found the flavour to be good (a nice strong milk tea) but the mousse was too heavy and thick for our taste. We love chestnut so we decided on the Mont Blanc which also has a Chinese almond mousse too. Again, while the flavours mixed well, it was too heavy. I wish there was more chestnut too. The special today was the Zen for $4.50 (the other slices were $6.50). Black and white sesame and matcha cheesecake. I could taste the sesame in the biscuit at the bottom, but it was lacking in the middle. There wasn't much matcha flavour either. Really, really, really wanted to love this place... but it's great marketing and cute macarons couldn't disguise: poor planning, and unmet expectations. The week it opened there was HUGE buzz: word of mouth, BlogTO video post - it was everywhere and everyone heard. Macarons are still very trendy (hello, THE macaron house, Laduree just opened at Yorkdale!) and combined with the craft of decorating them as Disney, Sanrio, and Studio Ghibli characters was a guaranteed win. Expectations were high. So imagine me and my friends disappointment (when we drove 45 mins to get there), to find that only 3 flavours of macarons, and 1 cake left... and a MASSIVE line. The line was expected, but the lack of stock was not. A week later, we finally got our hands on 15 of the 18 flavours of macarons. This time we called ahead and ordered in advance. They were, indeed, beautifully crafted. And for that alone, it's worth the price. But flavour-wise, only half of them were on point. The best were Vietnamese coffee, black sesame, pistachio, hazelnut, mango and all the tea flavours. Least enjoyable: salted caramel. In summary, great for photos and visual indulgence... but better taste can be found elsewhere. Would return to try more cakes. But due to their frequent lack of stock... it would be a while before I venture there again. Unless you got GPS, it's not easy to find. However, thanks to social media, that helped a lot. The first time I came over, there was a huge line up. But I waited for my turn. I ordered 3 of pistachio, blueberry and black sesame. They tasted so good! I liked the black sesame the most. The second time I was here, I had to get the earl grey, citron, Vietnamese coffee and Hazelnut Chocolate. Earl Grey is now my go to flavour! I tasted the richness of the Earl Grey tea, and there wasn't a strong sweetness to it. Absolute drool! Now I am very eager to try other products DaanGo will sell. When I arrived they still have many choices left except for the 3:15 which I think it has milk tea, coffee, and pineapple bun cookies crumbs. Heard this is their most popular cake so I guess I will have to try that next time. I ordered the characters macarons of 9 and 2 cakes, which are the Montblanc and Zen. They are not bad but it's quite expensive for a piece and I am expecting more if I'm paying for that price. The macarons looks very cute which is their gimmick and I agree it's working for most people. In term of taste, it's not bad as it's not too sweet and some flavours are different, but the "cookies" part isn't moist enough. Also, they need to do a better job on putting the macaron together because some of them aren't put well, like one side is shifted a little and not align with the bottom. Normally I am really not one for the whole opening-day Instagram hype thing, preferring to let others test it out first before I decide if it's worth the pain. But I was in the area today, so why not? Had the blueberry cheese tart - it was good. The grand opening looked like a success, very busy with lots of support and love from his fans. The staff was very excited and of course figuring out the opening day kinks but very friendly and positive even though the line up was almost put the door. They had complimentary Starbucks coffee, tea, roasted pork, and gave out 10% gold cards for next visit. Sampled: 1 blueberry and 1 rare(?? said the mature lady) cheesecake, which was a nice one bite tart. Great cookie crust crunch and not overly sweet filling. It was good but not what I came for. The HK Milk Tea cake - got a slice and it was delicious and unique. The flavour of tea had a bitter sweet note and not too sweet, which might be perfect for some. This would go great with an afternoon tea, but not coffee or espresso as it would get lost in mouth feel. I like my sugary treats and my coffee double double so it was just missing a touch of sugar for me. Cute character Macaroons- worth it! My favorite by far is the Totoro with the Vietnamese coffee filling, and not cuz I'm a Totoro fan but the filling combo is a MUST TRY! I got a 9 pack of mixed characters and it was hard not to take all these yummy characters home with me, even harder not to eat them as they are so cute! Fridge magnets was an idea my husband suggested Shells are well made with the perfect chew, fillings were all generally light as he uses fresh fruit instead of extracts and nothing was heavy like a ganache filling. I would have loved a tad more filling inside to really taste the some of the flavours. Stronger flavours a like the black sesame were more pronounced while the white peach got lost on the palette. The Strawberry was nice and fruity but the Strawberry-Yuzu another Yelper remarked was only a promo macaroon from another event. Parking- not enough for this small plaza, so come ready for a stroll. LITERALLY THE CUTEST MACARONS ANYWHERE! I drove 40 extra min from where I was just to check out this place and it was absolutely worth it! Not only are the macarons as cute in person, but they taste amazing. The flavors are tasted in every bite and you can actually taste potency of the tea or whatever flavor it is. I got the early grey, the milk tea and the Vietnamese coffee ones and I love how strong the flavors are in them! I was worried they might all taste somewhat similar but nope! It was like I took a sip of tea or coffee in each bite. And the prices are completely reasonable and actually about the same as normal quality macarons, but these are much cuter! I ordered the durian cake for my mom and dads birthday. The ordering process was a simple call away. The cake was super cute and even got 5% off for yelp check in which was nice. Personally I am not a huge durian fan. In fact I hate durian and can't stand the smell. But even so I still wanted to try a tiny bit of the cake so I can write this review. In terms of the presentation it is definitely a 4.5/5! The reason for the -0.5 is because some of the torn fell. And I was able to see the green on parts of the cake. Taste and scent wise you can definitely smell the durian and it has a strong durian taste. The texture all went very well together. My parents and my boyfriend all enjoyed it. I've bought a cake from Chris before his opening of all his stores and I can definitely see that he has improved a lot. The cake may be small, probably can feed 5-6 people. Cost $37~. This may seem expensive to some but you're paying for the design and flavours. If you just want a regular cake that can feed 10+ people for under $30, go buy a Costco cake. I would definitely recommend the cakes and would like to try out the others They also have a rewards program! read more
