Dac Hung (aka 得興) is a Cantonese style BBQ (燒臘) establishment run by Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants (#1). Despite having Vietnamese as a listing category, the only thing Viet here is the language spoken (#2) and not much else on the food front. Despite their low profile in Chinatown, they've been a go-to spot amongst locals for their roasted meats over the last decade. The vibe is so low key that it almost feels sleepy. There are plenty of tables for groups of all sizes and with dedicated parking to boot. The small window of meats is enough to entice a steady flow of take out customers and I love that it still has the feel of a family-run place. For most folks, it's either takeout, catering, or lunch. The latter usually shoots for roast pig (heo quay / siu yuk), bbq pork (xa xiu / char siu), roast duck (vit quay, siu ap) along with a hot food spread of pig ears, organ parts, and stewed meats. In terms of the flavor and quality, it's on par with the rest fo the competition, without much standing out. The bbq pork is tender but lacks a bit of sweetness and the roast pork has a nice crisp, but could use a little more seasoning. I've had their catering as well, in the form of a fully roasted pig. It's a nice price, tender meat and a sizeable roast. It's ideal for special occasions and they do a good job packaging it. It's not the best roast pig I've had, but given the price and location, it's clutch for the neighborhood. The friendly staff staff working here is multilingual with Viet, Canto, Mando, and some English. Credit cards are accepted, but cash is always king. I'm looking forward to trying other items on their menu in the near future. __________ (#1) Which make up a majority of the demographics in Houston's Chinatown. Nguoi hoa / Nguoi cho lon folks, stand up. (#2) With that good ol tieng hoa-twang to it.

Tonight, I ordered a roasted pork belly rice and received this type of meat: stale, burn and shattered meat. When I came back to talk to them and ask them to exchange the meat for me, they said they would do that next time. Why next time but not this time? I said if they didn't want to exchange, just refunded me the money, they said NO, so disappointed. They showed their bad customer service. Please consider when you order here!

So I came here a few years ago and haven't stopped thinking about this place . & I can honestly say it is not what I remember at all . I went in about an hour before close so maybe I should have gone in earlier I'm not sure . Anyways I ordered the intestine and pig ear along with the pork belly & wonton soup. I asked for spring rolls and was informed they were out no problem . I think that me & the cashier/cook sort of got off on the wrong foot initially I asked for a pork belly he asked if I wanted half pound or a pound I just said half pound..I then asked if it came with rice or not and he asked why I asked for a half pound I just didn't realize that I was supposed to ask for the plate I apologized & then moved forward. My total including my drink was $31 the soup was $10 and I tipped $5 . The wonton soup broth taste like they just boil all the meat in it and use the broth as a soup & it is not appetizing . I had to add lots of spice and seasonings in there . I needed some broth so I ate it up but I probably won't order that again . The pork belly was delicious. The guy was nice enough to help me box up my food and put my soup in the container so I wouldn't spill it so I do think we flipped to a better coin by the end of my time here. I'm not sure if I'll come back or not if I do it will definitely be earlier in the day . Braised pig ears were okay

Grease build up on rim of the bowl

I ordered mì hoành thánh. The bowl came out. The food looks ok. BUT, the rim of the bowl had a smudge of grease. I touched it and rub my fingers it was definitely grease. The same grease that is built up under a pot when not cleaned overtime. I kindly asked the waitress. "what was the sticky stuff on the rim on my bowl". She didn't say anything and walk straight to the back. At that point she knew she messed up. As she brought the bowl to the back hopefully getting a new one. I saw her grab the new bowl put it down and pour the old bowl over the new bowl touching the grease. At least I would've thought that she would made a new bow.I am writing this review to inform everyone know please inspect your FOOD and BOWL to see if anything is strange. After she brought it out I stand up took my ticket and paid for it and kindly walk out.

Ok, there seems to be some discretion on the first two reviews that the duck was "ice" cold. Based on what another reviewer explained and me asking my mother she too confided that duck is supposedly eaten at room temperature but CAN be heated according to personal preference. That is the reason for the 5 instead of the 4 star that I really rate this place as, offsetting the unfairness on that. Now that we got that out of the way may I warn you if you are squeamish at seeing hanging duck carcases in the window....then you might not want to drive by here, happy Holloween by the way and if you are a regular of any Asian Town (I detest being called China town, we're not all Chinese!) then you probably are immune to the scenery. Parking is a little tight at busy hours, but the restaurant is not really that big but to the side there are enough spaces to fill a stadium full of people. Lock your valuables etc, you're in the wrong part of town. The interior is CLEAN, new and even the restroom was pretty kept up clean. I wonder if this was a fluke, but I think not. The place is semi-divided between a restaurant and an ordering cafeteria type counter where you order your roast piglet or duck but it's all the same business. The menu is simple, the prices are low and the service is punctual. Who said these people were mean? We experienced nothing but harmonious service that would never let our water levels falter and the only rejection I got was you have to pay at the register, there are no tickets to bring to the table, minor! Mother had the "Vietnamese beef stew" and it had a good taste, not salty. It surprised me because I thought these dishes were automatically made with curry since toasted bread is accompanied with it, but I have been misinformed by myself all of these years, thank you mother. I also ordered the stew and an order of the grilled pork with rice which did have a good flavor. Each of these dishes were $5.50, you can eat here all day and not break the bank. The grilled pork was charred nicely with a proportion of rice that accompanied it by the side via "packed rice bowl turned upside down and tapped to let rice unstick", you've seen the ploy before. A few fork lifts of marinated lettuce on the side cars this dish, see posted picture. I snapped a few pictures of the menu except for the other side which they offer frozen juices, coffee, orange juice and such. Thank you for reading and I hope your visit here was as good as ours. Yelp it up!

My parents begged me to pick up vit quay and heo quay from this place they say it's comparable to Bellaire location. Inside looks very clean, however also empty. Me and my brother were the only ones besides the staff. Workers knew English but you can tell they speak better Vietnamese. We sat and waited for our order. Usually I would expect them to offer a glass of water while we wait, they didn't and that's okay too. Reading previous reviews I didn't expect much. I'm just here for the food! 1 whole duck, 2 lbs of pork belly. They over cut the pork belly to 2.5 lbs. it's cool it just got it anyway. Total cost was $38. Was this pricy I don't know my mom always orders this. I can tell you that the duck was pretty greasy, and it taste better in between a fresh loaf of bread. The crispy skin of the pork was super crunchy and hard.

Food was good and fresh, no complaints, friendly staff. Very clean inside Lemon Honey Tea is really good.

Wonton Noodle Soup. The BBQ pork is super chewy :(

It's great that this place offers fresh pit roasted pork and duck on regular days of the week instead of having to only be able to get it on Sunday's from Thanh Hung or Bellaire. It's true it's very good! But I'll only be coming in to order portions of the meat to go because the sit down food here is lacking. The wonton noodle soup came in a super large bowl with tons of soup but the broth was bland and lacked the rich fatty goodness you expect. The sliced pieces of BBQ pork were super chewy and unappetizing. The combo plate of BBQ meat with rice was also disappointing because though the meat was good, everything else was bland. I don't think broccoli is a side vegetable one wants to eat with this dish but there it was as a side. I understand that English is not most of the servers first language so I spoke Vietnamese to them but even then they acted like they didn't completely understand what I was saying and did not check up on our table at all nor bring us the check. Save your time and just order the meat to go.

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. It's nice having an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in our area, close to us, so we don't have to make the trek to Bellaire every time we crave some Viet food!

I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. Anyone checking out the food hall need to make Xeo Yum as part of their eating itinerary. __________ (#1) A play on the Vietnamese sizzling crepe, Banh "xeo" and yum" (#2) Previously the Conservatory and now Stestí Food Hall. When I arrived there was nobody dining in the restaurant, that was a bit worrying, but I figured it was a bit early for the dinner crowd and late for the lunch crowd. Food & Drink - 4.5* First up was the noodles, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't say the hype I'd heard about from some others was there. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. He paused to greet me and advised that I could sit anywhere. He provided water and adequate time to determine what I wanted to order. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. I provided pics of the menu for someone to make their own assessment but in general I thought many of the dishes were pricier than they probably should be. I know inflation is certainly killing many businesses and consumers but even these felt a bit off. Overall - 4.5* This is definitely going to be one of my go tos for crawfish when in the area. The flavor is fantastic, the pricing is good, the size of them were solid. There are a couple of other dishes I may try on the next visit. The restaurant is clean, the owner is very nice, and it's a nice low key space to just enjoy a good meal with friends or family.
