Dagger Mountain is a gem. There is nothing else like it in this area! Their coffee is exceptional, and if you talk to Dan or any of the employees you will get a glimpse of the passion and dedication they have to ethically sourcing and roasting their beans. They explained to me that they didn't consider their storefront to be a "coffee shop" because unlike most coffee shops, they don't offer bakery items or cream, milk, or sugar (but if you like a little something sweet they offer a mocha or a cafe miel from their espresso bar). Instead the Dagger Mountain storefront is more of a 'tasting room'. They are all about the beans, and they want you to come in and experience the bare distinctions between the regions and locations their beans are sourced from. It's pretty cool! Coffee is a pretty complex thing, and you won't be able to appreciate the distinction by adding cream and sugar. They try to share that and educate, which I could see how it could come off as pretentious, but they aren't in the least. Just like craft beer lovers and wine connoisseurs, there is a definite following for handcrafted coffee, and although it is an acquired taste and appreciation (just like for beer and wine) it is an appreciation none the less. They are a craft-specific company pumping out the best damn coffee in Northwest Indiana, for sure. So if you are into Skinny Vanilla Lattes or the sort, this probably won't be your jam, but you should still stop in and support a fantastic, hard-working local business doing something cool and different. Oh, and great customer service! There aren't a slew of employees so just be patient, like you would anywhere else. These guys are always willing to talk through and explain their process and methods, but also if you have to wait a minute to be served, keep in mind that again, each cup they make is handcrafted, takes time and is prepared down to a science (no really, there is a method to the madness). Don't run in expecting to be in and out, because their methods are an experience in themselves, which is pretty dang cool (I especially love watching them use the coffee siphon!). Go to Dagger Mountain for the experience, and for the education, you'll learn a lot and get a great cup of coffee out of it for sure. I'm a little new to yelp, but it seems like the top rated reviews are little novels with flowery prose and narratives about one's whole life story. Well, I'm not sure how creative of a writer I am, but I will say this coffee completely flip-turned my life. I never had anything like it. So I'd like to take a minute of your time while you sit, and let me tell you the story of Dagger Mountain coffee, coffee suited for a Prince. I'm not from Valpo, it was a passing stop for me. I'm headed to the West Coast to see my auntie in Bel Air, but she recommended this place to me before I left West Philadelphia. I can definitely say one thing, they definitely don't have coffee like this back home in West Philly where I was born and raised! I had two cups of coffee. (1) the Kenyan bean through a siphon then (2) the Ethiopian through a French press. The French press offers a little more body and natural oil to the coffee and I really prefer it this way. The siphon is good, I feel, for a middle of the road kind of person. They also have other methods of brewing available. The good thing about this place is that you can experiment with different beans and different methods of brewing. It is artisan coffee. It can be a little intimidating, but be bold and experiment! Andy, Ashton, and Dan are gentle folks who love to talk you through coffee. The biscottis by Wild Flower are really good too, and the flavors rotate as well. It was a beautiful day, and the garage door was open to all of nature's bounty. I had spent two hours in Dagger mountain without realizing it. So I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said "FRESH" and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, home to Bel Air' I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8. And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo home smell ya later!' I looked at my kingdom; I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air. read more

Normally I drink coffee with cream, so when I visited Dagger Mountain I ordered a latte which is fantastic, they pull consistent shots of espresso and really take the time to make sure your drink is as good as it can be. They use an organic Amish whole Milk which compliments the espresso wonderfully! When I'm in the mood for something sweet, I order a cafe miel, which is a latte with honey and cinnamon and a biscotti, YUM! The service is great, taking time to explain the menu, so knowledgeable and kind. They are always willing to explain what process they are using and why! It's always a fun time and they really know their stuff. It obvious these kids have worked hard to start this cafe.They treat coffee like a craft and always respect the journey it's been on to make it into my cup, I have witnessed many explanations/conversations with customers while enjoying my cup at the counter. I never knew coffee could be so particular and precise. They understand it's not for everyone and are just grateful when people stop in to at least try it out. Dagger mountain has some of the best coffee I've had in Valparaiso, Indiana. Their coffee is brewed and made in the purest way possible and helps you get the fullest and best experience you can get out of drinking coffee. They do not serve they coffee with milk or sugar. To some this may be a disappointment but milk and sugar take away from the full potential of the coffee while also making it unhealthy. They look out for your well being making the coffee, in a away healthy for you and get the most bang for you buck. They also don't serve food but to compensate for that loss they serve it with a Cookie that is supposed to complement the coffee. I give dagger mountain a 5/5 I have never seen so much dedication to coffee and actually making a quality cup. I loved this place!!! While visiting my daugher in Valpo, we stopped by for a coffee. Absolutely loved the ambiance and friendly/helpful attitude of the workers there. My daughter had a black coffee and I got the BEST dark chocolate mocha (a suggestion of one of the workers there) and I wasn't disappointed....it was DELICIOUS!!!!!! Can't wait to visit my daughter again because we will definitely pay this place a visit again! read more
