Mecha Noodle Bar was a great addition to a day at the Smithsonian National Zoo and the second visit confirmed everything I remembered. Free parking in the fenced in lot and a short walk made access easy. A small detail that goes a long way when you have a hungry group of college kids ready to eat. We just missed happy hour but that did not stop us from ordering off the munchies and drinks menu. I ordered the liquid gold. My daughter finally found her drink after two misses, mango sticky rice and lotus flower bomb, before landing on a spiked Thai iced tea that was a clear winner. We ordered the spicy tuna hand rolls, yuzu kosho corn, red oil and roasted mushroom dumplings, firecracker wings, and Korean fried chicken baos. The dumplings and kosho corn stood out, both coming with sauces that had their own thing going on. The wings were suggested as one of their best appetizers and cooked well but the taste would have fallen flat without the lime leaf ranch to carry them. Entrees brought pho bo vien, spicy miso 2.0 ramen, spicy beef ramen, and tonkotsu 3.0 ramen, all served piping hot and full of flavor. Three squeeze bottles of sauce sit on the table and they are worth trying. If you have a large party ask for backups because one round will not cover the table. Portions were large enough that to go containers were necessary. The space is large and inviting, bright colors and wooden furniture pleasantly somewhere between upscale and casual, loud enough for energy but quiet enough for real conversation. Exactly the right vibe for a celebration with adult kids and their mom. We skipped dessert to save room for ice cream down the block, tapped to pay, got a texted receipt, and were out the door. Mecha is by far my new favorite ramen spot! I can't believe I haven't done a review already. First things first, you have to get the edamame. This is the most uniquely prepared edamame I've ever had. It's packed with herbs and spices and so flavorful that you won't go back to regular edamame after trying it here. I've ordered quite a few items off the menu, and I've been equally satisfied every time. I've had the Pho Ga and the Shoyu Paitan...both were so delicious. They come with extras so you can customize your bowl with hoisin, chili flakes, and more, which I love. One time I went with a friend who's pescatarian, and we ordered the Cha Ca La Bong (catfish). It was incredibly flavorful and filling. It's served cold, a delicious sauce. But don't let this cold dish fool you ...it does not disappoint. We also ordered the General Tso shrimp, and I got the sweet-and-sour spareribs. Everything was delicious. As for drinks, I don't quite remember which frozen one I ordered, but it didn't give much of a buzz. The regular alcoholic drinks, though? They definitely got the job done. Mecha Noodle Bar was pretty good. I visited on a Thursday at 6 PM and it was about 1/3 full. The place is very casual. Many of the tables have benches on one side and small stool on the other; it's fine, but not the most comfy. Tables are also loaded with the basic chopsticks, napkins, menus, and condiments you need. We tried the Kale Salad, Red Oil Dumplings, Firecracker Wings, Spicy Miso 2.0 ramen, and Tonkotsu 3.0 ramen. The kale salad was fine but a little lame. The wings weren't "firecracker" -- not spicy at all -- but had a very nice dry rub and smoky flavor (very similar to the wings at Succotash). The dumplings were enormous and pretty good, but I wish the sauce stuck to the dumplings better. Ramen was also good; I preferred the Spicy Miso over the Tonkotsu. Service was a little too basic. But this Ramen bar along with several other restaurants have arrived and were bustling. It would've been hard to get a table, but I snagged a bar seat for a pre-movie meal. For my app I had the Korean fried chicken bao. The bun was so soft and fluffy and the crispy chicken was perfect with the pickled veggies. Only one piece per order but I certainly did not leave hungry! I tried the coconut curry laksa as well which was really good. A friend and I had dinner at Mecha, and even with large entrees, a drink each, an appetizer and a 20% tip, our dinner was about $50 each (which is a good deal in this city). I did not enjoy my experience. I had a reservation on a cold Friday night and my party was seated in the front of the restaurant near the drafty door. It was so cold we left our coats on. A member of my party asked if we could sit at a table closer to the back of the restaurant since we could clearly see open tables. We were told a bit aggressively that if we wanted to move we could cancel our reservation and be put on the walk in list. We felt rushed with the staff constantly attempting to clear our table but also confused because they were super slow bringing out our drinks and food. We tried this noodle bar on a Saturday lunch. I usually stay clear of Asian noodle fusion places that do everything AND pho. But I'm glad we tried this. We did not get pho, and saw other diners around us that did, but my guess is that they do a pretty good job of that but probably not quite as authentic and full choice as a dedicated Vietnamese place. We tried four different noodle bowls. Spicy miso with pork belly Spicy beef ramen with Szechuan broth Chicken ramen Tonkatsu ramen with pork belly All come with a whole soft cooked egg that was done nice except the miso. I only tried the spicy miso and a piece of pork belly from the Tonkatsu. The pork was good in a large thin slice. The miso was really spicy and frankly in my opinion it ruined what a good loaded miso soup can be. When I make it at home with tofu and greens and seaweed I usually put togarashi pepper mix but this was an overbearing level of spice. Ironically my wife ordered that and liked it yet couldn't finish and she doesn't like spicy food like I do. The tonkatsu and chicken ramen seemed favorable and they liked it. The ramen noodles here are thinner than the type I like but really cooked to a proper tenderness. Finally my spicy beef ramen.... I usually wouldn't roll the dice with Japanese noodles cooked with a Szechuan sauce as I'm a purist in both. But it was actually really good! And spicy! Even made me perspire at first. Beef fairly generous and cooked well. Egg was a nice touch and lots of spinach. I'd order this again over what else I saw and experienced here but would like to try their smalls like a smash burger, spicy tuna hand roll etc. Service was good, quick, and thoughtful. This is by far the best ramen place in town! I usually get the spicy beef ramen bowl and add the braised brisket which are thick pieces of tender meat. This is a descent amount of food, so 2 people can comfortably share this and try an appetizer or two (They have half off appetizers for happy hour from 3pm-6pm Monday through Friday).
