(Note: my review focuses on the hard pack ice cream) Dairy Joy is a piece of Maine History; perhaps a piece of Americana. If Norman Rockwell were coming through New England and happened to pull over in Biddeford, he would find a sweet treat at Dairy Joy. The charm really is there, complete with high schoolers dishing out sweet dairy based treats and if you squint, you can almost hear the big bopper and see the poodle skirt clad coeds. What's tragic is that the ice cream itself falls short of the New England dominance of American ice cream styles. Trying four flavors, I found the base creams to be light and airy (overrun?) as opposed to the heavy chew for hard pack ice cream that is reflective of the region. Also the ice cream itself was being served too warm only making the unfortunately light base more exasperated and it turning melty, quickly on a rather mild summer evening. Lastly -- none of the flavors that had mix-ins (ex: Oreo chunks from mint Oreo, or brownie chunks from espresso brownie) had a good amount of mix-ins. If it was just my flavor, I'd chalk it up to a fluke but we all had the same experience. We all find ourselves looking for the second half of the flavors we expected. What was good was the flavor of the base creams. For example the coffee base was pretty stand out good. While the smiles from the cheerful teenagers at the window were nice, they can't make up for the product itself. Our family has been going to this seasonal ice cream shop for many, many years. Today we were inspired to stop when we saw that they had banana soft serve ice cream as their flavor of the week wanted to get some creativity in with what to do with this fun flavor. One Sundae was topped with caramel and crunch coat topping. The other Sundae had both the strawberry and the pineapple toppings. WOW! TWO VERY DIFFERENT FLAVOR PROFILES BUT THEY WERE BOTH AMAZING!! My very favorite soft serve flavor is their pistachio but banana is definitely going to be giving some serious competition!! Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you pick - from a simple dish of their ice cream to one of their sundaes. Their waffle cones are really good too. Beware!! Their portions are very generous - a medium is most definitely a large! Dairy Joy accepts cash only but they do have an ATM machine right there. Tasty ice cream with lots of flavor options and friendly staff!! I usually go for soft serve - and they always have a special flavor that's in the machine with soft coffee. You can get it swirled with coffee (or if you ask they'll layer it with chocolate or vanilla). My favorite is their soft peanut butter with soft vanilla- it's so good!!! The fluffernutter is also a delight! Can you tell i like peanut butter & vanilla?? They had to reduce their hours because of staffing issues - and now closed for the season... but you can count on me being one of their first visitors when they reopen in the spring! read more

Such a cute little ice cream place. Exactly as you would expect. The type of place that is great for hanging out and taking pics. They have a endless variety of flavor combinations. We wanted the strawberry and fudge boat but in a waffle bowl and they kindly made it to our liking. We got hard served ice cream pistachio and toasted coconut flavor. Went here today on the way home. Ordered a twist In a cone, vanilla soft serve in a cup, and a hot fudge sundae. The girl took 10 minutes to make a sundae and proceeded to hand me a hot fudge sundae made with soft serve vanilla!! Never asked for that. I thought if you want soft serve you specify, other wise a sundae is usually hard Ice cream. Not only was it soft serve, it was melting everywhere (because obviously hot fudge would quickly melt soft serve ice cream), with whipped cream and sprinkles falling off. It was so melted the whole cup was filled. I couldn't even enjoy and eat it. I threw it out. Won't ever go back there. Make sure you specify that you don't want soft serve ice cream with your hot fudge sundae!! read more

Located in front of the Hannaford, Dairy Joy offers Maine hard ice cream and soft serve ice cream cones/dishes and other cold treats such as sundaes, Nor' Easters, banana splits, parfaits, shakes, slushes, Pepsi products, and more. and the prices here are very reasonable with a small ice cream cone for under $2. My 11 year old daughter and I stopped here for an ice cream. The first one I tried was cappucino chip, when the TWO ladies who scooped it were done touching it with their bare hands they handed it to me, I took off the top layer and threw it out when I tasted it it was so awful I threw the whole thing out, I decided I just must not like their version, so I went back to the window and ordered a chocholate chip. Again when I tasted it it tasted AWFUL!!! I had my daughter try it thinking maybe my tastebuds were off... She said it tasted like poison, I threw that one out too! I can only speak for my kids, who say that Dairy Joy is tops in the area for non-gelato offerings. Their sample size is pretty big, too. Stretching from the beach soft serve of Revere up through the various Gifford's stands up North. They like both soft-serve and hard-serve, but what really floats their boat is the huge amounts of hot fudge they put on their sundaes. I am not sure that is the best criterion to rate an ice cream stand, but they insist that their 5 star-rating also reflects the quality of their ice. They definitely rank Dairy Joy over Big Daddy's in Wells, and Garside's and Martel's in Saco. I can't say, since I am a total ice cream snob. If it ain't Rococo or the dueling joints up on Fore Street, I won't touch it! Come to think of it, those places don't even serve ice cream anyway! I can say that the people here are super friendly, and yes it is true that a lot of things like frinkles and sparkles cost extra, but the base is so low, quit your complaining. We go up to Maine every weekend or so on average, and we stop at this place almost every time we go! They always have a new soft serve flavor that you never see at any other ice cream shop. The location isn't the best, but the quality and taste of the ice cream makes up for it. read more
