    Tasty with a pretty backdrop!

A neighborhood friend told us about this spot, and since it's National Ice Cream Month, we figured we should make a stop. What a cute spot! It's a classic New England ice cream shop. The staff worked quickly to satisfy the many orders for the people who were visiting. I thought it would take a while, but it didn't! There are plenty of places to park as well as lots of places to sit and enjoy your ice-cream. Plus there are lots of beautiful flowers! The serving sizes are gigantic, too!

This is the ice cream that I dreamed of for nearly a year. In the opinion of your faithful scribe, this is the best ice cream in Southern Maine. Sure, they aren't off I95 or US1 but, the fact that you can find this kind of quality in the middle of the woods makes it all that much better. So worth the drive from Arizona.

Big sign at the front says "BREAKFAST". There is no breakfast. They probably should change the sign.

Is this Gifford's Ice Cream or Hershey's or Bliss Dairy or what? Does anybody know?

They make their own ice cream. This is not commercially made stuff.

He completely disregarded the other guest and only focused on my drink order, which felt disrespectful. After taking my order and walking awaynot once but twice, when he returned I had to ask, "Are you not going to take her drink order?" The tuna sashimi was great and the carrots were good as well. However, something about the halibut tasted off. I work with fish daily, and this personally was not it. I had one bite and could not continue eating it. The server boxed up the halibut for me, but then tossed a to-go container onto the table for us to box our own dessert, which felt inconsistent with the level of service. The bartender was wearing an H&H raincoat and appeared to be drinking on the job, while other female staff members were scrolling on their phones. Overall, not a great first impression. The ambiance itself was nice, but when you make an 8:30 PM reservation and receive a text at 7:30 PM saying your table is ready, it feels a bit off-putting. I had asked beforehand if anything earlier was available and was told no, so I intentionally booked later for an evening experience. Then upon arrival, the restaurant was fairly empty. Within the first few minutes of us being there, the kitchen doors were closed and cleaning was happening all around us. It created an unpleasant atmosphere for what was supposed to be a social evening out and a little hoorah celebration, and nothing was acknowledged by staff. It was clear that reservation notes or comments in chat of reservation were not reviewed. Overall, not thrilled with the experience. Been there, done that -- one visit was enough for me/us unless that 49-year-old male server Charlie learns how to properly serve guests and the kitchen team start to season the food a bit better. Would have been nice if Charlie checked in with us more like he did the other tables hence the eaves dropping to know more about him and the place. 4/10 experience, will not be back which is a bummer.

The menu is a great mix of drinks, desserts, and dessert-drink combos. A group of 5 of us arrived and waited about 10 minutes for spots at the bar. The desserts are pricey (most are around $15-20), but the portions are big enough to share with at least 1 other person. I got the Chocolate Chip Cookie Royale, which really hit the sweet-salty spot with a warm choc chip cookie, salty sweet cream ice cream, salted caramel, sesame brittle, and tahini whipped cream. The savorier elements allowed me to keep eating and not get overwhelmed by sweetness. My friends got the vegan peach crumble and chocolate cake and enjoyed theirs as well. Come with your sweet tooth, and leave happy and satisfied!

Five of us headed for lovely Kennebunkport, but where should we meet for lunch? Choosing a lunch spot could've taken all afternoon, but a trusted local steered us toward the Pilot House. So that's where we met up -- and it ended up being a terrific lunch. It has a scenic location in a harbor on the Kennebunk River, where the whole waterfront is dotted with boats. The big dining room is equally pretty with colorful nautical flags covering the ceiling and maritime décor everywhere. Pilot House was packed, I mean pretty much every table and every barstool, but after a short wait a table opened up for us. Our server, Carley was great- with a super nice attitude and quick water glass delivery. Pilot House's menu has plenty of seafood options among its appetizers, soups, salads, baskets, sandwiches, and entrees. I went with their Fish Tacos ($19) - "Golden fried haddock, red cabbage slaw, queso fresco & house made candied jalapeño aioli. Served on flour tortillas". I asked Carley if I could get the fish grilled instead of fried, and that was no problem. I loved the tacos; the fish was plentiful, flaky and tender and that jalapeño aioli was excellent. One of the other meals at our table included an interesting one. Ever hear of a Haddock Reuben? It was $21.00 for a marble rye sandwich with fried haddock, coleslaw, 1000 Island & Swiss cheese. Not a morsel was left behind. Two of us went with a Fried Baby Shrimp Basket ($24), a huge feast of golden fried baby shrimp, French fries, coleslaw & cocktail sauce. We were seated in the far-right side of the dining room by a bank of windows, and I noticed what looked like a huge yacht connected to the restaurant by a walkway. Turns out there is a restaurant bar up there. I so wanted to scoot up there for a few photos, but it wasn't open for the season yet. Oh well, maybe next time. Just another reason to visit the Pilot Hose because the food and dining experience were top-notch.

They have all your standard seafare bar food, as well as some other options. I love the variety in vibes depending on where you sit. The restaurant has 3 floors, with the upstairs feeling more upscale in vibe and the downstairs more family oriented. In the warm months, they also have seating on the big boat outside, which is super fun. I always bring out of owners here just for this boat vibe alone. The drinks definitely taste like they are made using premade mixes, and purées, so their price tag feels very high for what you get. The food is definitely average, with some items better than others. The clam chowder is THICK but it has exceptional flavor. The fried pickles are solid. All in all, I would highly suggest coming in the summer to grab a beer or drink on the boat while sharing some apps with friends, but skip it if you are looking for a high quality meal that will leave you wanting to return for dinner.

On our visit, there was a single solitary fellow manning the store with its wall of 10 frozen yogurt flavors, wall of dry toppings, counter length of additional dry toppings, a small cluster of fruit options directly across from the wall o' froyo, and, last but not least, four squeeze bottles! Can you tell I liked the squeeze options? Too bad the caramel solidified on contact with the chilly yogurt. Also too bad they don't have my favorite all-time topping - mochi. Sampling is not encouraged due to some folks taking advantage last season, but if you ask, they'll probably let you. Tart? No. Sweet? Yes. We wanted to try a little bit of everything, so decided on the mixed grill for 2, with mashed potatoes and fires on the side. We started with the focaccia bread and oil dressing that were very good. We also got the enchiladas, one spicy cheese and the other beef. These were okay, nothing crazy but enjoyable. However, the mixed grill was simply not worth the money. The sausage was over cooked, strip steak flavorless and the long short ribs were tough. The chicken was okay, but nothing better than anywhere else I've had grilled chicken before. Our waitress Jennifer was amazing. And when she asked how our experience was, she could see by the lack of food we had eaten, and the expression on my face, we were not impressed. We ended our meal with the tres leches cake that was very good. Overall, this place is a gimmicky tourist trap that over charges for their "atmosphere" and prays you get drunk off their $250 wine before you order. I thought for sure it would be decent, and was wrong. I would hate to see the quality in peak tourist season. Leaving hungry was not something I imagined.
