You have a choice of any hard or soft serve flavors between two extra large chocolate chip cookies. if I were you I'd splurge & buy one for everyone in your party. Guaranteed WOW factor. All this is attended by young school students who do nothing more than smile while they help you. Fielders now takes credit cards but tips are only in cash; so please bring money to leave them with a nice tip.

You get that cute ice cream shop feel when you walk in. We love having both soft serve and hard ice cream options and the rest of the menu is endless -- so many choices outside just ice cream, from shakes to sundaes plus more! There are always new flavors to try whenever we come in! There is seating both inside and outside with plenty of parking along the sides of the building and in back. I finally stopped by Sundaes By The River recently. They were closed over through the 4th holiday, so I came back over the past weekend. There was a steady stream of customers here. I took my time to choose the ice cream flavors (writing it down) for an ice cream flight before walking up and placing my order. I ordered the 5 flavor Ice Cream Flight ($10) with Waffle Chips ($1), including Peanut Butter Caramel Cookie Dough, Coffee Oreo, Key Lime Pie, Kahlua Brownie Crunch, and Playdough. My treat was scooped to order and presented nicely with the abundant waffle chips layed out around the ice cream flight. I enjoyed my ice cream flight and waffle chips out in the back with my black iced coffee I picked up nearby. Other than a few mosquitoes flying around, I was able to enjoy and finish off the entire ice cream flight on a warm, but not too muggy evening.

This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV

Their flavors board might be second in quantity when competing with the likes of the Scoop Deck, but it also isn't quite the overload that is the scoop deck but it is. Goose Rock's is similarly overwhelming with far too many amazing flavors to consider. You can't pick wrong. When the ice thaws, go for ice cream!

The strawberry is unique - seems to have very high strawberry content, so it ends up almost tasting like an ice cream-sorbet hybrid in comparison to say Haagez Dazs which is more cream-forward. The chocolate was also great. I was hoping that the Maine blueberry would essentially taste like a black raspberry ice cream but it just tasted like blueberry, which I suppose should come as no surprise. It was a little too sweet and not my favorite but maybe true blueberry-lovers would like it. I read a bit online about how they don't do samples in order to keep costs down and also keep people moving in and out of the shop quickly. It's an interesting model but ultimately it feels like they are prioritizing saving marginal costs at the expense of the experience of the customer. Maybe they save tens of thousands of disposable spoons by doing this, but when it comes to a person's individual experience in the store wanting to optimize getting a flavor they like, that gets sacrificed. Sort of opposite of customer-first. Some of their flavors are also pretty unique like lemon poppy seed with a jam mixed in and it's hard to anticipate what that'll be like. I also think a homemade waffle cone as opposed to the bought ones they have available would be a major upgrade here. Overall, great ice cream with a few things that could be better.
