Stopped in for some ice cream before we had to catch our ferry back to Portland. The line was long and it moved rather slowly, but it was worth the wait since the ice cream was really good. You can peruse all the souvenirs while you wait. They had so many flavors that I wanted to try. It was hard to settle on just two but I landed on the sea salt caramel truffle and the Maine deer tracks. I thought the pricing was reasonable considering how large the portion was. I've gotten less ice cream for more $$. There is limited seating outside however we got lucky and scored two of the Adirondack chairs out front. I would highly recommend getting some ice cream if you are on the island! read more

Only rating 5 star as a curtesy...As someone who's been spending summers on peaks island for 26 years since i was 6 months old. I remember my first visit to the island fondly. What's always been a staple of Peaks is the corner ice cream shop. Id rather miss my boat and get a nice cup of fresh ice cream, but what the issue is.... is I get chocolate jimmies on my 2 scoops of whatever my flavor of the week is.... so as im enjoying this delicious ice cream on a beautiful day i noticed a single green jimmy a top my scoops. Baffled i quickly segregated the foreign jimmy from the rest of my chocolate jimmies. Needless to say this sent me into a deep internal debate of "am i being racist to this different colored jimmy since they all taste the same, but just look different." Most of Down Front is silly tourist stuff, so if you've already got your fill of lobster and lighthouse paraphernalia then what you want here is the ice cream. As far as I can tell, the ice cream is not made in house. That's totally okay, just like my rating - three stars means stuff is not amazing but totally fine. The ice cream is good. The ice cream is tasty. The ice cream is dairy, so if you have trouble with dairy you're out of luck. Get the Maine blueberry if you like blueberry. Get something else if you're so inclined. There are cones and cups and toppings, so if you need to avoid gluten you're fine. Customer service is friendly and efficient. The ice cream here is very delicious. Nice and creamy but not too sweet. I got the coffee ice cream on a sugar cone and normally I'll get sick of other ice creams as they are too sweet but this one I ate the entire thing and was disappointed when I ate the very end of the cone and I had no more. Thankfully, I had a ferry to catch so that forced me from going back and overeating (because I definitely would have). My husband and I stopped in here about two weeks ago while visiting Peaks Island. We both ordered root beer floats. There was extra root beer from the floats (bottled) that the girl gave us to take. In reading the label, I noticed that it was not caffeine free - most root beer is. As I cannot have caffeine, I was kicking myself that I didn't check the caffeine content before ordering. I was explaining the dilemma to my husband when the staff offered me a new ice cream order at no extra charge. We offered to pay because the mishap was on me, but they insisted. I really appreciated their generosity and graciousness!! I reordered a soft serve mixed with candies, and it was great. My husband enjoyed his *2* root beer floats. :) read more

My sisters and I enjoyed everybody part of our visit to Peak's Island, save for an experience at this ice cream shop. We quickly became among the confused masses as the doors were closed behind us at the 4 o clock hour, though the door advertised serving until much later. No explanation was given for this. The woman in glasses standing at the register for gifts was friendly. There were two employees behind the ice cream counter serving ice cream, however, and this is where things went sour. To his credit the young boy appeared to remain poised and focused on customer service despite the chaotic scene developing next to him. That scene: his co-worker, a young red-haired girl, was visibly annoyed at the opportunity for commerce brought into the store, by us. She snapped "I need to know!" to get our orders and note it was just 3 of us and a group of 2 others so the shop was by no means busy. The young girl scowled, rather than smiling, showing her dismay at having to, as a sever of ice cream, serve ice cream to income-generating patrons. She once came around the counter unannounced and brushed by me very quickly and quite near to the walker that was holding me up on my broken hip. When she then gave us our treats she made no eye contact just extended treat in hand and when she felt it lose immediately turned her attention away. My sisters and I, by choosing to bring our business to this shop, had been made to feel that we were unwelcome and intrusive and disturbing the flow of things. Yet we are the customers. We are the flow of things. I believe every business deserves a second chance so I will be returning in the future (the ice cream was in fact delicious). I sincerely hope that this one employee comes to terms that customers/guestS are anything but intrusive and disrupting; that their happiness in exchange for their business is at the heart of every little shop. I fear what will happen if she continues to disrespect paying patrons of Down Front. read more
