I was really disappointed with my visit to Dairy Joy. We live out in Worcester and had driven out to Tewksbury for the day and on my way home I figured I would stop at Dairy Joy since I had heard the good news online that they have dairy-free ice cream. Before we drove out of our way to get there I called the phone number listed on google and it seemed to be a dud, but we kept on our way, when we arrived it was very busy and we waited in line for what was really an inappropriate amount of time. I asked what dairy free flavors they had today and was informed that they were cleaning the machine, so the answer was none. There were no signs up, no menu items crossed off and no one to answer the phones and relay this information before we drove out of the way. I can not begin to express my disappointment, can't say I'll even be back to give one of the very few dairy free ice cream options in the entire state a chance. Also a word of advice to the business owners: you don't clean the machinery mid-shift, before and after the day starts, NOT while you are attending to paying customers. read more

Located conveniently on 117 so when I was trying to avoid some massive tractor trailer crash on 128 when coming home from Waltham this afternoon I stopped in. So I've heard a lot of really high praise for this place and was intrigued to try it even though I'm not the biggest fan of soft serve. I have to say I didn't think it was anything special. First, off the prices were pretty high and the quality was good, but not exceptional. I will agree that they have more flavors of soft serve than I have seen before which was intriguing. I ended up going for the traditional chocolate-vanilla swirl which they call marble for some reason. I also had it dipped in the chocolate as I was feeling extra gluttonous. It was good, but to be honest I couldn't much tell the difference between it and something from DQ. So maybe I missed something or maybe this is another place that's hype out does what it can deliver. read more

So disappointed, been coming to Dairy Joy for years but prob won't come back all summer. They do a good job social distancing with tape on the ground but you still need to use cash...Not very clean when you have to and the person handing you your ice cream have to touch the cash. By the way there are NO CONES! I order three ice cream comes and was handed cups. There should be a sign to let you know they don't have cones. Plus the server should have told me when I ordered and paid before being handed the cup! That's bad business and not fair to do to customers. Well, we have been coming to Dairy Joy for many years when I visit my daughter living nearby. We live in Southern CA and they don't have whole fried clams there. We love Legal's Seafood but really love the fired clams at DJ. Why not a five star recommendation? Well, if you read most of the other Yelp reviews you can see why. The large order of clams was $42.95! Each year they have increased the prices. The Lobster roll was good but when asked if I wanted lettuce on it the young kid failed to mention that that would be 50 cents more! And the Lobster roll was $22.95!! One would think that would not be an extra charge item. Small fries at $3.90, small onion rings at $6.00, and Lemonade at $3.50. All the prices are high. They do not accept anything but cash and we all know the reason for that! The ATM machine is close to the pickup counter and I'm sure that DJ gets some benefit from that being there too! One person in our group used that ATM to get cash to purchase our soft ice cream cones for desert and the fee for him was $6.00 to do so. They should have more shade by spending some money on umbrellas and coming out once in a while to clean off the greasy tables. We did two trips there this time but will re-think coming back in the future. The first meal this trip was close to $200 bucks and today's total was $92.23. BTW, the young dude at the order counter told me the total was $92.25 and so I gave him a quarter from my pocket and a hundred dollar bill. He gave me back 8 dollars. But he did not give me a receipt until halfway through our lunch we decided to ask for one. Why would he round up the 92.23 to 92.25?? I can see them forgetting the 23 cents but rounding up was pathetic. I don't see any responses to the bad reviews so I guess that they just don't give a xhit! Bob's Clam hut in Maine is a much better venue but that trip takes over an hour to get there. We should all read reviews more often. read more

Ah, the Dairy Joy... home of the 37 dollar clam plate. No, really. To me, this is the quintessential ice cream spot. Their soft serve is the best around (JavaBerry & Creamsicle), and they're one of the only places that i know of where you can get a raspberry lime rickey (if you know of others... don't be shy). Their food is good but nothing unusual or particularly noteworthy. The line can get rediculously long at the right times during the summer, so choose your time wisely or wait in line... either way you won't be let down. read more

Get in your car and head to this shanty located in the ultra wealthy town of Weston Ma and get ready for pricey yet tasty experience. The Dairy Joy owners are NOT allowed (by town ordnance) to improve anything on the outside. This is a true seasonal place with your typical New England summer items. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, fried clams, lobster rolls chicken fingers, fries etc. Over the past few years Dairy Joy has added "healthier" items to the menu such as grilled chicken sandwiches and salads. All of which are great items. Some things to consider about Dairy Joy. This place is not inexpensive. They have a Lobster Role platter which comes in at $17.95. Very tasty but not a "Cheap" eat by any means. But even with these high prices it is still a awesome place to go. Like other Yelpers I agree the Javaberry is a perfect combination of coffee ice cream and black raspberry. YUMMMMM Also keep in mind that this place only has out door seating. Just wanted to let people know that the famous sherbert soft serves have been replaced. You know, the raspberry and orange flavors. I always get the Java Berry and when I was handed the cone the raspberry was shockingly pink. I'm definitely didn't like it as much as I liked the old one and it had a weird texture. Dairy joy is a really nice ice cream stand/ sandwich shop, the ice cream is amazing been going there since I could barely walk. The food depends with what you get the seafood is really really good(fried clam roll, lobster roll) the only thing I'm disappointed in is the burger, it seems like they choose a generic store bought patty and charge 10-15 dollars for them which I think is over priced if they decided to make they're own patty with some basic seasoning I would have no problem paying that price. But I still love this place for seafood and ice cream, oh and they make and amazing hot caprese sandwich. read more

Took my Dad here for a Father's Day treat. We both had soft serve with an extra that they called pistachio blast or some such thing. The ice cream was good. The pistachio added no flavor but just a green line along the ridges of the soft serve. The difference between a small and medium was negligible. Stick with the soft serve forget the flavorings. If I was driving by I would stop in...wouldn't make a special trip. read more

I don't mind paying a little extra for something delicious. However, the mark-up is insane for the food. I feel a little like I'm at the fair or some other outdoor excursion buying $8 funnel cake. First, the good. The fried clams were awesome. I thought they were very tasty. They were crisp on the outside, and just sensational with big tender pieces of clamness on the inside. The fish part of the fish-n-chips was also very moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. But nothing close to those clams. The mediocre. Basically everything else. I didn't particularly like the lime rickey. It tasted more like corn syrup, diluted with club soda, and 2 sad slivers of lime inside. I couldn't really any lime-y-ness. The french fries were okay. The onion rings were not salted, and tasted very bland. I liked the soft-serve, however, seen as I can't really tell the difference between that and a MickeyD's soft-serve, I probably won't ever come back. Unless I'm really craving those clams. I visited the location in Hudson first and thought it was pretty pricey already. I was shocked to notice the difference in prices from Hudson to Weston!! There is a mark up of at least 30% from one to the other. Please bring a lot more cash for this location. $2.50 for a 12oz bottle of water!!!! Wife and I decided to have the same items we tried to eat at the Hudson location recently. Clam plate and cranberry chicken salad wrap(Boston chicken salad at this location) To our surprise the food was much better tasting here! Patio was clean but, no bathroom to use. One interesting fact about both of these locations (Hudson and Weston) neither one has competition in town. They are the only ice cream shops in either towns. Ah Dairy Joy, such a large part of my childhood. Almost every summer night I would beg my parents to take me here. If I won (not very often) I would get the marble twist (as large of a size as my mom would let me get, usually a small) dipped in chocolate. Man was that heaven - mom would get pissed as the ice cream would melt all over me - but who cares I was 7 and had ice cream! Now older and wiser I realize, while Dairy Joy is a nice little place for ice cream, it is still just soft serve. I enjoy it once and awhile and who doesn't like chocolate dipped ice cream? But in the end if I'm going to get ice cream I might as well go to a place that makes it homemade and has more than 10 different flavors. As for the food, its your basic overpriced, summer fried clams, burger, fries place. I guess its ok, but I wouldn't bother spending the money here. It's so great that you can drive a few miles from the Waltham office building compound and find a ice cream and clam shack. Yes it's more expensive than the ones I grew up going to in NH but everything near the city is right? Their lobster rolls and burgers are delicious. Everyone loves the ice cream though I usually skip it because I'm not a sweet person. Dairy Joy is good for one thing: soft serve ice cream. The javaberry is outstanding. I'll make a stop in the future for more. Besides that - don't waste your money. Eat somewhere else because the food is boring and the portions are small. The frappes are kind of watery. Food is 1 or 2 stars and the Javaberry soft serve is 4 or 5 stars. So we'll call it 3. Well, I really wanted to go to Rockport today, but that just wasn't in the cards . . . so I decided to check out Dairy Joy, which is just a few miles from where I work. It sounded a lot like this place Amelia's in Gloucester, which I used to love (soft serve flavors aplenty). Past yelpers chatted up the grilled chicken sandwich and the javaberry ice cream, so I decided to give those a try. I just couldn't stomach a fried meal today--neither the cost nor the grease. Hmm. It was decidedly ho-hum. I guess I was expecting some sort of transcendental roadside food shack experience. The sandwich wasn't bad. Just a bit boring and overpriced. I was prepared for the overpriced part. And my soft-serve didn't suck. But it was weird. The java part was creamy and smooth and the berry part was icy. Of course I ate it, but for my once a week ice cream fix, it wasn't quite worth it. Mix the vanilla with the coffee and now we're talking . . . but I don't think I'll be high-tailin' it back here any time soon. Good God I love this place - even if I need to take out a small loan to get lunch and an ice cream. This reviewed is slightly biased because this place also has sentimental value; I've been coming here my whole life. The fish and chips are very good and the onion rings are amazing with a nice light coating. It's one of the only places I eat every last bite. The meal is complete with a medium javaberry in a cone (that is significantly smaller than in years past, yet more expensive....interesting - minus one star for that). I've always been pretty unimpressed by this place. I give it high points for nostalgia-inducing qualities and hyper-cuteness, but the prices are high and the food is average at best. I was expecting good things from a burger served on the side of the road (although in retrospect, who knows why), and what I got instead was a burger that tasted a whole lot like it was served at a concession stand underneath the bleachers of a Division II football team's stadium. Fine when you are at a football game, but not when you have multiple choices of places to get burgers. Maybe I am being too harsh. It should be known that after years of working in Ice Cream joints, I don't really touch the stuff (you try having it caked to your arms and your dogs looking at you like you turned into a giant fudgsicle!), so maybe I am missing the point of DAIRY Joy. Well, I finally got the family to Dairy Joy this weekend. We went on a Sunday afternoon, right at noon and it wasn't too crowded! We got a table without any waiting around! My husband and I both got clam rolls, which were really tasty, albeit a bit small for the price. The kids got a cheeseburger (good bargain for $4.25) and the chicken tenders which were quite tasty! So yes, it's a little pricey for a clam shack, but we found the food to be really good! My husband got a chocolate malt shake which was good and both kids got the chocolate ice cream which they LOVED. I got the Javaberry and found it to be a little icey and next time I go, I think I'll try a different flavor, wasn't diggin the berry part of it. Love the atmosphere of the place, casual. Bad part was no bathrooms! Because when your three year old has to go, he has to GO! read more

I'm a little bit biased because I worked here several summers ago. I was the highest paid ice cream server in history. I was hired to be a manager, but the original guy ended up staying, and they didnt want to fire me. So I got paid to be a manager, but to do grunt work. But their ice cream was good. It's all soft serve, nothin fancy. No sprinkles. Wicked overpriced. It was like $3 for a small cone 5 years ago, so I can only imagine what it is now. I guess they have to make up for the high labor costs. Everyone was really friendly. There were a lot of regular customers, we knew them by name. The downs: the price. No public bathroom. Long lines. Working long days without a break. I made some good money that summer, but damn, I worked my butt off! read more

Debated whether to return here, so pricy, but boy, the clams were simply superb. Chiefly because perfectly deep-fried, not overfried, like at least two more famous places on the North Shore (Lobster Pool is the worst, talk about fried too long). Anyway, these were done perfectly. We came here after a nice day at Walden yesterday afternoon. I had a super cheeseburger with lettuce and tomatoes, fries. Price board said $11 and some change and then a dollar and some extra for lettuce and tomatoes each. I was surprised when the tally came up to about $15.75. Minutes later I asked my sister why was the burger so expensive to find out she was charge $13 and some change for the same burger, and she added bacon on hers which mine didn't have. Its only a few bucks difference but on an already overpriced burger it seemed outrageous that I was clearly charged much more than what their own prices advertise. I decided against complaining because the time had passed and they were getting busy, but we will certainly not be back. read more

As one can readily see here, a large percentage of the market base of this spot are west-of-Boston locals driven by nostalgia, combined with the fact the residential suburb it sits in isn't exactly a culinary hot spot (when the most popular eats in an affluent town are at a chain bagel store, that tells you something). On the positive side, DJ is consistent, not having really changed much (other than some embellishment to the outside seating area, e.g. more seating and an actual attempt at some landscaping) over the last forty years. Yes, I too came here as a child -- but as you'll see below subsequently tasted enough other wares to now know better. For the cold reality is that nothing here -- really, absolutely nothing -- is a particularly noteworthy or stellar example of warm weather New England roadside cuisine. The soft serve offerings at DJ are paltry and uninspiring compared to what you can get at Pat's in South Hadley or the nearby Chilly Cow in Arlington. And please, don't even get me started on the seafood: the fresh clams at the Clam Box in Ipswich (cooked in oil that is continuously changed) blow away the greasy frozen ones from DJ. Want a lobster roll at a premium price? Take a day trip up to Wiscasset and get in line at Red's Eats. The wait for their world-renowned version is worth every second -- particularly when appreciating the fact their lobster roll costs $3 LESS than the rather meager, generic (and grossly overpriced) DJ version. read more

I'm writing this review based on ice cream only. This is a classic roadside ice cream stand who's specialty is the ice cream not the food, so I don't get why there are so many negative comments about the food. Did you really expect to get high quality fine dining here?? This is a great place to get decent ice cream on a warm day. There aren't many of these places left (I miss Dean Dairy). Is it pricey? Yes. But if I want a treat, I don't care how much it is - that's just me. For those with families, yes it can end up being an expensive trip. read more

My son and I just stopped by here to grab a small bite and ice cream. We ordered a 1 medium fried clams, 1 small fried oysters, and 1 iced tea. The bill came to $64.20. There are no fries that come with these items. It was just 3 items. I was shocked to say the least. I questioned the cashier why it was so expensive and she explained the medium fried clams was close to $40. The fried clams, and oysters were just ok. I've had much better in this state, especially at a cheaper price. This place is SOOOOO over-priced. Needless to say, we didn't stick around for ice cream, nor will we be coming back. read more

We'll excluding the Seafood, the prices here really aren't that outrageous so long as you're comparing it against full actually restaurants and not fast food joints. Anyway I really enjoy the food and Milkshakes and ice cream etc. Plus sitting out there on a warm day is splendid, even if it gets crowded and there are some bees that buzz around your fries. Yes, the lines can be long and the food isn't cheap... but there's a reason the lines are long: Dairy Joy is an institution! They serve soft serve ice cream in various flavors and twists (mmm, javaberry...) and with a handful of toppings (including the traditional chocolate dip), and their hot food is freshly cooked. Their sweet potato fries and regular fries are both excellent. Every year they seem to update the menu with a few more options, from paninis to salads. They even serve ice cream for dogs! It's a popular spot for local families and others driving through the area and with good reason. If you want what Dairy Joy serves (and are willing to pay the prices - in cash only), they do it really well. No wonder the locals celebrate its opening each year. read more

My husband really didn't want to go here and I pushed him to go and boy do I regret it. Started off with not enough seating in shade, the tables were nasty! I'm not sure they've been wiped down since last summer. We're not big germaphobes and don't frequently come to Yelp but last night's experience and the post dinner haranguing I rec'd from the family made this review a priority. Servings/Portions were markedly small. Cheeseburgers were tiny and thin while the bun was big and bready. Bad combo. Small clam plate was about 10 clams and were a lunder-done, the outside breading was just about raw. My chicken salad sandwich had bones in it.... gross. The amount of chicken salad in the sandwich was far less than an ice-cream scoop.... Very disappointing. All this for prices out of this world. 80 dollars for dinner at a window? No Way! Don't go.... I'm pissed. I have to listen to my husband and kids complain about it and tell me "I told you we should have gone ANYWHERE ELSE!" kids said ice cream was bland. Employees were not super helpful with the confusing and busy menu, they really wanted us to just hurry up and order. Miserable experience. Won't go back and happy to share my experience with anyone who'll listen. Also, there is no cell service or wifi available. So if you're meeting someone, don't plan on having ANY connection.
