The staff was also super kind, I have no idea what the other reviews are complaining about. They were super kind and accommodating of my friend's peanut allergy so we didn't have any problems. She got one of their famous orange & Vanilla twists and I got a milkshake. She was saying such good things about her orange and vanilla twist so I had to go get one for myself and I'm glad I did. I rarely review based on an experience where I wasn't there. My mother in laws caregiver took my MIL to Dairy Mat yesterday. When they got their root beer float from the counter, they realized it was too thick and would be hard for the 85 year old woman to eat. The caregiver (who is African American) asked the owner if they could thin it out with more Vernors. A simple request...and not unwarranted. The owner was rude..,she couldn't take it back because it was removed from the counter (how can you tell if it is too thick if you don't pick it up?) The offer was made by this woman to give her a shot of Vernors on the side for an extra two dollars. Seriously? I have been on the service industry for a long time...and while the customer isn't always right, this person handled it so poorly that we will no longer return...me or my whole family. I'm not going to claim racism, as I don't know what is in someone's heart...but after reading some of the comments, I'm not so sure. I absolutely love this spot, probably my favorite ice cream spot on woodward out of all of them. Loveeeeee the variety and just how many options there are! That being said we usually just opt for the classic twist in a cone, but have tried some of their custom soft serve flavors like mango and lovedddd! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is simply due to the issue with the hours! We personally have never ran into the issue of coming in once they've decided the final customer, but have watched for years as it's happened to others. I totally understand your hours are your hours, but sometimes the staff can be very rude to customers as they're walking up - especially once the weather warms up they haven't started their summer hours! Then there's the issue of not updating their hours as well, we just assume they close at 9 (don't bother to remember if it's 9 or 10, and when that changes), but it's disheartening to see them turn away those first few groups when they're within 30 seconds of the store closing. I just saw that they have a FB page where they occasionally update, but updating it on google would help too! And again totally get it, if you let some in you have to let them all in, but maybe just wait until 9:01-2 before putting one of the staff members in line as the final guest, and be a little softer with the delivery. People are coming in to have a good time, overall happy experience (it's ice-cream!) and it's upsetting to see them so sad when they get turned away. read more

Extremely Disappointing & Discriminatory Experience This was one of the most blatantly prejudiced and unwelcoming experiences I've seen at any local business. The family arrived at 8:57 PM--before closing time--and both service windows were still open. A man with his children, clearly excited for ice cream after a drive from Sterling Heights, was told, "Sorry, we're closed," by an older woman working there. What was upsetting is that she made no effort to serve them, despite it being before closing, and it was painfully obvious the refusal was because the family was Middle Eastern. It wasn't about time--it was about who they were. As a longtime customer from Birmingham, I'm heartbroken to say we will never return. There is no excuse for racism or prejudice, especially in a family setting like this. We'll be taking our business to Dairy Deluxe, where all families are treated with respect. read more

My fiancé and I absolutely love this little ice cream spot. We drive a decent way to get over here and we'll never miss them for a sweet treat when they're open. We have been going to this soft ice cream stand for decades And never had a problem - We have noticed over the last year or so their portions have been getting smaller and the staff is not happy. Yesterday, we ordered a small cone and a medium cone with different toppings. The order taker got our order correct, but the old lady that was fulfilling the orders reversed the toppings. She handed the cones to us and they were in our hands. We told her that it was the wrong way around she reached through the window and grabbed both cones from our hands and promptly threw them into the trash right in front of us. I asked why she didn't just make the small cone over again and let us keep the other medium, even for an extra charge or as an apology for getting our order wrong. She yelled at us telling us that every cone must be accounted for in their inventory and I asked if she went through the trash to count the cones she threw away. Well, needless to say this didn't sit well with us. You should all find another soft serve establishment nearby. Everyone needs to lighten up a little. Dairy Mat is great. Yes it's convenient. Parking is scarce, but not a problem if you walk. And if you're not close enough to walk, then you can pick any of the 100s of other soft serve places on every corner in every suburb. I gave it four stars 'cause it's soft serve, c'mon. Really the only good thing Dairy Mat has going for it is its location. I believe they changed ownership a few years back? Great place to stop after a sporting event for the little ones ( since they won't notice the difference between quality ice cream and mediocre ice cream). Even if you do stop , its ALWAYS crowded in the evenings during summer and there isnt anywhere to sit if you don't snag one of the two tables...I concur with the previous posters, I keep coming back just because its convenient., tsk. read more

I'm not one for negative reviews, but after my experience last night at Dairy May, I felt compelled to share. At about 7mins to 10pm, My daughters and I get into the line at dairy mat which was situated on the left side, we stand at the 6 ft markers (that appeared in the sidewalk) while there were several customers (approx 3 customers/groups of customers -multiple orders inside of these three customer groups) in front of us. I had driven from West Bloomfield for this ice cream with my 5 year old on tote, as she had been asking for this particular place (one that we frequent). Since I knew what time they closed, I made it my business to be there well before the 10 pm and was vigilant about watching the clock. As we proceed to the counter, as the LAST customers of the night, which at this time is is all of 10:03pm. A lady with brown hair, pulled back with a mask on of course, decided to tell us verbatim "she was our last customer, we are closed." Referring to the lady who was in front of us. With my 5 year old's face perched on the order counter and I was so startled at how abrasive and inconsiderate this worker was as she made her announcement. My initial reaction was to ask her was she serious? Then I explained that we had been in line since before 10pm and that the lady saw us behind her the entire time as well as the staff in the window facing our side of the Dairy Mat made full eye contact with me, well before they were closed. As my 5 year old looked up at me and my other daughter ran back to the car in tears, I told that lady that how she was greeting us was so uncalled for and that I couldn't believe that she would chose to be so rude, after I promised my daughter Ice cream and we had stood in line waiting, with no notice from anyone that they had set a "last customer" and within the time published that that actually close, I fully requested that she serve at least my child some ice creams. She began snapping back and raising her voice saying, we are closing and she was the last customer and we shouldn't be serving you ice cream, but just say what you want.... I couldn't believe the way she was talking to us, I don't expect she would have treated anyone of those people in the line before us this way, and for the record the lady in front of us, was at the counter at 10:01pm and they took her order with no problem. Now with all that is going on in the world today as it relates to racial tension, and so forth, I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt that it was Not because I am an African American woman (who was just in a simple dress coming from being in the pool all day) with 2 African American daughters (whom were also humbly dressed for the same reason) With that being said, it grieves me so much how she performed in front of my 5 year old and my oldest, I spent our entire ride home answering questions about why the mean lady didn't want to give us ice cream and wanted us to go home? I have supported this business for the 11 years I have been back to Michigan.... 6 of those years as a resident of Birmingham and 10 of them as a small business owner in the city of Birmingham. Dairy Mat needs to consider the people that are serving customers and their ability to communicate and be pleasant. Ice cream should go with smiles and laughter, especially when your customers include a 5 year old child. FYI: to leave on a better note, the other staff proceeded to take out order politely and served it to us with a smile, after all staring at whomever this woman was, appearing to be a superior (to them and me smh) with fully disbelief themselves, even the woman in front of us commented on her behavior and responded to me "wow, I'm just so glad she decided to take you alls order" I give everyone a bad day, we all have them, I think my biggest concern was how she expressed her bad day in front of my children. Oh Birmingham... Even your old school ice cream shop is overpriced. And the parking sucks. But otherwise, I was pretty pleased with my frozen yogurt. They serve frostyogurt frozen yogurt which I absolutely love. Its a throwback for me, I spend many summer nights eating frostyogurt brand at Yoz in my high school days (it doesn't seem like they serve it anymore). It's usually pretty busy and the lines don't tend to move quickly so be prepared to wait. You can't sit with us if you don't like the dairy mat. I have been coming to the dairy mat for over 15 years, and its just as delicious as the first time I had it. This is a summer staple, and the mom and pop ice cream shop is sure to amaze. Their cherry dipped cones are so delicious, and their ice cream tastes homemade and fresh. Its always fun to wait in line and watch all the little kids squeal with excitement over the dairy mat. Now that I am in my 30s and no longer live in Michigan, every time I come home, I make my dad take me to the dairy mat, and it reminds me of the wonderful childhood I had. Very good ice cream. Being that it's on Woodward it is quite noisy with very fast moving cars which would be the only downside. The prices are very cheap ($1.69 for an ice cream cone). Therefore it's quite odd that they don't take credit cards. A credit card fee is 3%. If your profit margin is less than 3% such that you can't afford credit cards you might want to increase your prices LOL. But it's also smart business practice to increase your customer base to include those that don't necessarily carry around cash with them which is most people nowadays. read more

This is our local ice cream stand minutes from our house and I'd like to reiterate the other reviews and encourage the owners to hire FRIENDLY staff. These girls have crazy attitude that is simply unjustified given the high prices and random rules, i.e. You can't have nuts on a special cone but you can on vanilla and chocolate. You also can't have special toppings on anything not in a cup or waffle. WHATEVER! I wouldn't care about the details or price if the staff served the ice cream with a smile. I asked for extra topping so they charged me the exact price even though it meant my change was $4.98 rather than $5. Come on...That's just crazy from an ice cream stand. I'm sure this bad attitude costs them tips but I think the blame really lies with owners who must not care enough to train and hire friendly employees happy to serve their local community.
