Came here on a Thursday evening. It was quite busy due to the warm weather. The staff, including the lady who served me, were not the nicest. She did not seem like she cared or was happy serving ice cream. I got samples of the coconut ice cream with almonds and the Mackinac Island chocolate ice cream, and both were hits, so I got a small cup with junior scoops of each. I have dropped my rating by half a star. My husband and I were very put off because there was a new server and when we asked if we could sample a flavor she very abruptly told us 'no'. Not sure if that truly was policy or if she just didn't want to do it. Either way, it is not good service to not allow customers to sample flavors, and to have to purchase something they might not like. I don't live in Michigan anymore but pretty much every visit home to see friends and family includes a stop by Stroh's. This ice cream parlor brings back all of the feels from growing up and going for ice cream. They also now carry retro candy, frozen yogurt, and so much more... On my recent visit, I called my dad when I landed DTW and I asked him if he had any special requests that I could bring him in the nursing home where he currently resides. His response: "a vanilla sundae with peanut butter cups." I knew just the place and was warmly greeted by Paul himself (I think). Sure enough, my dad was pleased with his Sundae. I went to school right down the road during the 70's, and Stroh's was one of the primary hang outs for me and my friends. For years, our bikes could be found out in front. (I probably had hundreds of Frozen Cokes). I was back in Birmingham recently, and I stopped in for Ice Cream with my wife. I was AMAZED to find Paul still there, ice cream scooper in hand, after 50 years! It was like time had stood still. We chatted about old friends who used to work there and I got a picture with him. Stopped by Stroh's for the first time a few weeks ago and had a great experience! It's the first Ice Cream spot I've been to since the start of the pandemic, so I wasn't really sure what to expect... but they make it pretty easy! When you arrive at the store, you'll notice a sign that explains their limit for how many people can be inside the store at one time. As a result, there's a fairly persistent line outside the door, of groups waiting to enter and pick out their ice cream. Once inside, there's a flow for how to go through the room, and create an orderly direction for people to move in and out. You'll notice that there's plexiglass between the customer areas and the ice cream areas, to maximize safety and sanitation as well. The quality of the ice cream is solid, and I'm sure there's plenty to be said about the various flavors. I tried the Superman and Scoopy Doo: both good flavors, but I'd definitely go for Scoopy Doo again next time (I think I have grown out of the Superman Ice Cream stage of my life!). Outside of the pandemic-related modifications, Stroh's still looks like a classic Ice Cream shop inside -- you can tell that some of the decor really has been around for decades! The interior has a great vibe, and I'm certainly looking forward to returning someday when it's safe to eat inside the building! Currently the tables outside the building are open and provide a great venue to enjoy the ice cream, while maintaining a good distance from the other customers. 40 years ago I started coming here when I was little-- Paul owned the store then and was always there when I was growing up. Incredible memories of this place- Icees, hockey cards, football cards, baseball cards, all kinds of gum, candy, I remember when they got the first yogurt machines... Superman Ice Cream and of course... Blue Moon ice cream, it's a Midwestern delicacy. If you haven't had blue moon ice cream with marshmallow sauce topping you have not lived. Yes it will cause an insulin infusion, but the combination is sublime. This place is exactly how I remembered it 30-40 years ago. Stroh's ice cream parlour is a generational thing for many Birmingham and Bloomfield folks. It was heaps cool to see many kids eating ice cream outside, just like I did when I was younger. We went back later and the manager actually told my daughter and husband that she was lying. The manager did nothing but embarrass my daughter and make her feel like she did something wrong. Instead of offering to count the register to see if there were overages or talk to their employee, he just called her a liar. So very sad. He left a terrible impression on my daughter. We loved this adorable, retro ice cream parlor that has been around since 1965! I love the old-fashioned vibes and the bright, fun colors. There had to be at least 30 flavors of ice cream! We went at around 9 o'clock on a we day in the middle of the summer and it had a really fun family vibe. We got one double scoop in a waffle cone bowl dipped in chocolate with sprinkles. We were able to pick two different flavors for the double scoop, one caramel Caribou and one coffee. Caramel Caribou was delicious and very Carmely! The coffee was very smooth. We also got a single scoop of vanilla for my grandma which she loved and totally devoured! The owner Paul was very sweet and friendly. He made a point to say hi to my mom and grandma. I had a pick up order that I went in for, that was handled terribly. I assumed it was ready which was my fault for doing. The owner asked if I needed help and I said I had a pick up order. After I said that the owner got hostile with me. He said it wasn't ready and when I asked how long the wait would be, he replied "it will be ready when it's ready" . I really don't understand why it was handled like that. He could have just said it's not ready yet and it shouldn't be much longer. But he actually got mad at me. I'm really confused on the confrontation I wasn't being rude and I didn't ask with an attitude. I just said I was there to pick the order up. After soccer and softball games, or school recitals everyone went to stroh's. They had the best chocolate malts I had ever tasted. it was bangin'. it wasn't cheap before, but now I feel it's a little pricey for what you're getting. If you don't want your malt to be liquefied you have to ask for it extra thick- that'll cost you my friend. If you want to be able to taste the malt, you have to order extra malt- that will also cost you. I had been a die hard customer for years, the 2 men that owned it used to say hi and chat it up with me when I'd visit. Now all i get a blank stare and now mention of back in the day... This is a neighborhood ice cream and sweet shop that all the locals go to. Convenient, has all the flavors you want, and a nice outdoor eating area. Nothing else in the nearby area like it. It's an old school classic vibe ice cream shop. There's not a lot of ice cream choices in the area except for chains. You can head to Woodward but that's far. The place is owned/run by 2 guys that works in the place all the time and knows all the regulars. The other reviews complain about the kids, the rich kids, and the sugar high kids. What else do you expect in this neighborhood? It's a bedroom community with a upper middle income demographic. People move here for schools and bigger homes to raise their kids. read more

This is actually a review of the Stroh's Ice Cream brand. They used to be a premium brand, but no more. For instance, their Moosetracks ice cream now has way too much vanilla and way too little chocolate/peanut butter! It's obvious if you buy a half gallon, open it, and look inside. We walked into Stroh's today and it was a blast from my childhood past. I haven't been in here since high school and the same guy that I remember seeing behind the counter, co-owner Paul Scott, was right where he should be, scooping ice cream for the kids and the kids at heart. The place is the same as it ever was but updated to include frozen yogurt for the health conscious and free Wifi for the geeks in all of us. You really feel like a sock hop could break out at any time. They serve Stroh's, Guernsey's, and Sander's Ice Cream and have a plethora of nostalgic candy. I went with my childhood favorite, chocolate chip on a sugar cone. And you know what? I felt like a kid all over again. Except this time I was on a mini-date with my husband. It is a bit spendy at $6 for two single cones but if that's what it takes to keep this local place in business that's OK by me. Next time I think I'll have a Blue Moon. Or Superman. I love that they have the newberrys ice cream and I like to go in and buy the half gallon. They have new flavors but you can never try anything before making such a big / large purchase. The worker there is rude when I come in. Would have hoped to increase a sale that they would allow a small taste in a cup to keep sanity measures (if that's even the concern), I would have bought another half gallon if I knew what the flavor was like. The ice cream is really good and the flavors I like are always in stock ( which is the only thing that really matters lol) . The waffle cones are my only gripe. This place is like a daycare center gone awry. It's outta control inside with sugar-hyped kids. That's ok, especially if you have kids. But, considering this place uses all Stroh's ice cream (i.e. it isn't home churned or anything), it pales in comparison to places like Clark's, where you get a huge portion of non-homemade ice cream for a decent price, and Treat Dreams, where everything is handcrafted. I got a 2 scoop cup at Stroh's, and it was pretty scanty, especially considering the price. The selection is good - Rum Raisin, Pistachio, Mackinac Island Fudge, Chocolate Peanut Butter - but there are too many places with less mayhem and better value around. read more

What I like about Stroh's are mostly the memories... the sentiment that comes from a childhood of growing up with visits to this place. Maybe it was because this wasn't a chain, but somehow I feel like we always ended up at Stroh's. They have a lot to choose from, and all of it is tasty. I think of it more of an ice cream boutique than store... maybe that's why it's an ice cream "parlor". I don't go back often because I'm trying to stay healthy.
