Continuing my America 250 series, representing a 1940's established business is Dairy Queen. They started in Illinois in 1940, and I remember loving the chicken tenders when I was a kid living in Texas in the 90's. Although my tastes have changed in the past 30 years from simply chicken tenders, pizza, etc. of what I liked then greatly expanding to much more, I still like the DQ chicken tender basket. Odenton DQ is the closest to my home and have been a few times. When I go, the catalyst is either a deal, using reward program points, and/or not letting points expire. While I'm not going as far as 5-stars like I gave Raising Cane's in Gambrills & Columbia. Raising Cane's chicken tenders are my favorite, but Dairy Queen is still solid. Raising Cane's doesn't give you gravy though, which DQ does. I like dipping the fries as well as the chicken tenders in the gravy. When I was a kid, I used to try to get gravy to dip my fries in at other places that had gravy, but nowadays really only Dairy Queen is the only place I can think of that I do that as the chicken tender basket comes with gravy by default. In addition to 4 or 6 chicken tenders & fries, the basket also comes with Texas Toast, which is good, but I'll admit I love the Raising Cane's Texas Toast more. When people think of Dairy Queen, the first thing that comes to mind is not the chicken strip basket like me, but they think of the various ice cream products such as the Blizzard. Those Blizzards and other various ice cream products are great too. My girlfriend & I have split a couple of Blizzards. One time I was by myself, got the chicken strip basket and a small Blizzard. I felt bloated after the "small" Blizzard, but it was delicious. I should've gotten the kid size Blizzard, but it was only an 80 cent price differential. I got their burger a couple of times, and it's surprisingly good and big too, almost the size of a hubcap, which foreshadows a future Yelp review in Arkansas on my state series I'll be doing after the 20th century businesses. One of the times, I had a Blizzard or split with my girlfriend in addition to this big burger, and I felt bloated, but it was worth it. Staff at Odenton DQ is pretty efficient and generally cordial, although one time, I felt they were kind of rude. Maybe an off day, but on average they've been good. Seating is limited inside, but there are maybe 4 booths. There are more outside seating both in the shade & sun. In summary, great food including ice cream. read more

Sigh... I have tried to give this place chance after chance. I've been there about four times now, hoping it would improve, but it just keeps getting worse. The staff is rude (especially the manager), and the whole place feels extremely unorganized and unprofessional. I was genuinely excited to have a DQ closer to home, but now I completely understand why this location shut down the first time. I've been handed melted ice cream, made to wait over 15 minutes for simple orders, and on my most recent visit, the ice cream I received was actually spoiled. Yes...spoiled. They did give me a refund, but at that point, it was too little too late. That was the final straw for me. This location is officially a no-go. Save yourself the frustration and head to a different DQ. read more

Well, when I got to Dairy Queen, of course there was a line so I went through the drive-through and. Taking my order, took about a minute 60 seconds preparing my order because I ordered the shrimp basket with a chili cheese hotdog no mustard no onions. Took a little bit to prepare because it was made fresh. I did not go in but the energy on the inside of the place looked wonderful and little kids. Of course we're leaving with their blizzards in their hands and parents were leaving happy and kids were sitting outside where you sit and just enjoying their blizzard so the energy felt great even though I didn't go inside. My food arrived to me hot even though I had to wait like 10 to 15 minutes for it because it was fresh very hot actually the only downside is they only gave me two ketchup. I asked for ketchup and I think the gentleman put five ketchup in one bag and then that was someone else's bag and then two ketchup in mine, but he made sure I got cocktail sauce for my popcorn, shrimp. My hot dog was delicious of course everything was hot. Nothing needed any extra seasoning so I am grateful. This Dairy Queen is a classic Maryland institution. A pillar of the community. I got 2 plain hot dogs and a lemon shake. Yes the hot dogs can stand on their own without toppings. Very fast service at the drive through window. Always clean and inviting with plenty of parking space. Other times I've been there for ice cream were fantastic. Highly recommended. read more

Terrible experience. Food was bland, and the service was downright rude. My large order was missing two items, and when I called, the staff member was so unprofessional another person had to step in. When my daughters went inside to get the missing food, they were ignored despite being polite. The stares and attitude made us feel completely unwelcome. No respect, no kindness, no professionalism. This location is back! Hours are better as it's daily and 10am - midnight. The app designates drive thru, curbside, and dine in. Being able to dine inside is a welcome return as this location's interior was closed since COVID. Frankly, the blizzards taste better, too! They aren't as salty as the previous iteration. Dq reopened! This was the place where we ate for the first time while looking for houses in the area overtly a decade ago. It is under new ownership.i had given up on the old one after too many disappointing meals and rude owners. Only a few people were in the place. There is a communication barrier they'll need to address. Very thick accents made it hard to understand things on both sides. Our food was ready quickly. I ordered a cheeseburger combo. An extra $4 for fries and a drink. The amount of fries was a joke. Think a small or kid's size at McDonald's. My plan was to share some with my daughter. At most places that's not a problem, but here we both felt like there wasn't enough. Problem #2- combos come with fries. You can upgrade to onion rings or cheese curds. It apparently costs more. They don't mention that when asking (a pet peeve of mine). Even worse, the menu board says there will be an extra charge of (blank). So you have no clue how much extra they will charge. Problem #3- it took close to 15 mins to cool one person's order. They weren't busy at all. Two guys ordered at the same time and sat down. The first had his order as quickly as expected. He ate it all while the other guy waited and played on his phone. The first guy FINISHED his entire meal and the other guy was still waiting. He even had time to go out for a smoke before the other guy FINALLY was given his food. Problem #4- forgetting food. While we were eating a lady from the drive thru walks in and mentions she's missing a burger. They make one and give it to her. The guy who waited forever for his food came back in and points out his meal included a water. They're nice enough and give him the water, but it shows a pattern- check before you leave! I miss the previous owner.. I hope she is doing well. I have been coming to this Dairy Queen for years. It now has a new owner. I've been about 8 times since it has been opened and I don't know if I will return. First incident- they couldn't make a mint Oreo shake because their blender couldn't handle it. Been to several other DQ and they make it with ease. 2nd incident I have been ordering the same blizzard for many many years. I ordered a large Oreo add M&M with no chocolate sauce. As I get the blizzard I notice it had chocolate sauce. So I tell the driver thru worker and she argues with me that it does not have it in it and that the chocolate I see is from the M&Ms. I know what my blizzard should look like. They had to remake it and look white ice cream w/o chocolate sauce. Their scanner never works so you can't use your points in the drive thru only with a mobile order and you have to go in. 3rd and 4th incident-I ordered my same blizzard (Oreo add M&Ms, no sauce) Instead of checking which order was mine he rings me up for someone else's order (which he refunded). Then Hersh hands me my blizzard and I noticed it didn't have Oreos in it. I could easily look at it without tasting it to know it was wrong. He then tells me it does and depending on how they put the toppings in is how the toppings will show. I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT. So I pulled off and parked in front, tasted it and stirred it up. Exactly like I said no Oreos. So I had to go inside to have them make it correctly. DQ is not new a lot of us have been going for years, if we tell you it's wrong listen. If you're looking to wait 30 minutes for improper melted ice cream, look no further! This is the place for you! My order was very simple (or so I thought) a large vanilla cone dipped in chocolate. I waited 15 minutes before realizing they forgot to fill my order (I had to remind them.) After reminding them I was a paying customer, I watched an employee scramble feverishly for another 15 minutes to perform the grueling labor of filling my order. After wasting all my time, the employee told me he couldn't fill my order because the ice cream machine couldn't keeping the ice cream cold enough to stand on a cone. I asked for a blizzard as a replacement but he refused that. What he handed me was soupy vanilla ice cream, dipped in chocolate with a cone slapped on top (A sloppy nasty mess.) What a terrible experience, I should have stopped at the Cold stone nearby. Terrible service, terrible ice cream, this place is a monumental waste of time and money. P.S Part of the problem is the location is overburdened. They have a drive through line that stretches out of the parking lot; they're serving crowds of people inside while running orders into the parking lot. On 17 Feb 2024, I ordered at single bacon cheeseburger meal from Dairy Queen (DQ) in Odenton, MD. I hadn't eaten at DQ in a looooong time, so I was not familiar with the menu. The manager kindly helped me maneuver the menu board to ensure I got what I wanted. Really appreciated the assistance. The drive-thru was rather fast and the window attendant was very efficient. I used a gift card. She informed me of the remaining balance without me having to ask--now that's customer service. My meal consisted of a bacon cheeseburger deluxe, fries and a diet coke. I would have liked the fries to have been fries a tad bit more crispy, other than that my food was delicious! If you're a sundae person, DQ has meal deals that include sundaes! If you're in the Odenton area and are looking for a quick, good lunch spot, DQ it a great option. read more

The service was good, the guys were really nice but WHY IS THE BLIZZARD ALREADY SOUPY? it was so mushy and melted it looked like cottage cheese in a cup when he handed it to me. It was literally chunky candy covered in melted ice cream. I doubt it's the workers fault so im not mad but higher ups like who ever covers budgeting need to go in and fix that machine or fix the freezer or something. read more

I'm going to keep this short and brief. I loveee the Chili and cheese Hotdogs. I love the mega chili cheese dog and the regular size. The mega size is sized enough for two people to enjoy easily. I don't know where they get the Chili from but it's the best chili I've had that's pretty darn close to my homemade. Give or take some additional ingredients. I also enjoyed the Blizzard. First and foremost, I am ALL for giving food workers grace..all the time, but especially durning these times. The work is hard, the people can be super difficult, and the pay is laughable. That being said, I want to share an absolutely appalling, ridiculous, and rude interaction with the OWNER of the Odenton DQ. 1:55pm - I pulled up to the drive-thru and waited my turn. 1:57pm - It's my turn at the order box. I place my son's "2 for $4" deal. Owner: That doesn't start until 2pm. Me: Okay, that's in 3 minutes. Owner: I know, the option doesn't show up until 2pm..you can order a cheeseburger for $2.49(??) Me: Oh, okay. Well..we'll need to figure out what we want now, so just a moment please. Owner: M'AM I CAN'T HAVE YOU SITTING THERE FOR 3 MINUTES..well, 2 mins!! ARE THERE PEOPLE IN LINE BEHIND YOU?! 1:58pm - Me: I understand, but my son and I need to figure out our order and we can't look over the menu while you're yelling at us. Owner: PLACE YOUR FIRST ITEM NOW OR GO BACK THROUGH THE LINE. M'AM, PLACE YOUR FIRST ITEM RIGHT NOW OR GO BACK THROUGH THE LINE. Me: M'am, I can't focus with you yelling at me and you can't force me to move my car to get back in a line that is now 3x as long as it was when I got here. The owner is screaming and pointing at me..WITH MY SON IN THE CAR. The pettiness in me wanted to just sit there watching as the woman complaining about her car line stands outside my car window screaming..holding up her own line. Ultimately, I left because I don't want my food prepared by an angry confrontational woman. Who knows what she would have done to our food! The interesting part is..I just read the other reviews here and realized how awful this woman is to most patrons AND her employees (surprise, surprise). Yet they had a sign posted about how "no one wants to work anymore so please be patient with the staff that did show up". EXACTLY, PATTY! It's such a wonder "no one wants to work" for BARELY minimum wage, especially when that work includes dealing with your toxic behavior constantly. I love this place! It was our first time going and I'd heard the food was pretty good. The staff members were so nice and friendly! They were patient and didn't get annoyed when I asked a few questions, which is unusual because most fast food places are quick to dismiss you. Anyway, we got the chicken tender basket, flame thrower burger, soft pretzel sticks, and a blizzard with cookie dough and Reese pieces. The honey mustard sauce was amazing and actually way bigger than I expected. I'd come back for that sauce itself. I liked the soft pretzels a lot, but the zesty queso was a little too zesty for me, but that's just my personal preference. It had a nice color and texture and was super creamy. They are short staffed right now so there are limited day, so please be patient with them. I didn't have a single problem during my visit, but the signed posted remind us that they do have a staff shortage. Sometimes people need a gentle reminder. I'd come back here anytime. Updating my review, July 21, 2022 - I want DQ but they're closed. It's 6:37pm. Reading the reviews for this place is honestly disgusting me, the fact that this store has gotten so much feedback but continuously ignores their customer base. I love supporting local businesses, and hate leaving bad reviews, but this business, with the business owner DESERVE to fail. How DO they stay in business? It's like the Manager just doesn't want to deal with well, anything. Hearing of a sign on the door rudely indicating the lack of people wanting to work is, frankly, sickening. This was fun! I didn't grow up with a DQ in my life, so it was a novel experience. I really dig that we have a soft-serve place, even if you define their ice cream offering otherwise. The food was pretty good, for what it was. We split a foot-long chili cheese dog and a large order of cheese curds. Both were definitely sharing-sized. We actually didn't finish the curds, but honsetly, we were there for the ice cream anyway. I had a single-dip cone, chocolate over vanilla-chocolate swirl. It was very very tasty! Such a fun experience. Definitely took me back to childhood. The prices were reasonable, and the service was both fast and friendly. I wish there was more indoor seating, as it was both hot and muggy that day. We managed to snag a booth right away, but it was cramped all the same. The interior could use some updating as well, but that's a minor complaint. There isn't even much space outside for seating and eating. Some tables and chairs, but not a huge amount. Looks like the store is permanently closed now. As a life long resident of the area this is just sad. Back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s that place was packed on the weekends with car shows and tons of people. It would be so busy people would park in the Odenton shopping center and walk over. DO NOT COME HERE!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. We just got home and I am so upset that I decided to write a review. Second day in a row they have closed early. They literally have a girl standing in the drive thru lane blocking it with a sign saying drive thru closed!!! That's how lazy they are! I absolutely love ice cream. And, I love Dairy Queen blizzards! The only reason I did not give them five stars is because it can get incredibly crowded and it is sometimes a difficult location to get in and out of. However, that is because they are so popular. I have had some up there meals before, but mostly I enjoy their frozen treats. They make a darn good ice cream cake! We have ordered several ice cream cakes from this location and have never been disappointed. But I really like is the fact that we ordered a head of time once, but the other time we simply walked in, got a cake out of the freezer, and they personalized it right then and there with no problem. That is great customer service. I typically try to always order customized things in advance, but sometimes you cannot always plan ahead, and it is nice to know they will still work with you. Their blizzards are awesome! I am a chocoholic and love anything that combines chocolate with peanut butter. They have so many different ways to customize and try something different each time. Their drive-through line is always long, but they move it pretty quickly considering. Their staff tends to be younger, because they are great about employing the local students, but we have never had a negative interaction. The staff knows their product line well and is always friendly and courteous. If you're looking for a yummy frozen treat, you definitely need to check them out. First time at this location July 2020. Got up to the speaker and the lady seemed like she hated her job to say the least. Told her we needed a min to look and literally every 5 seconds asked if we were ready We have kids and it takes a second to look over the menu. Finally had to tell her we would let her know when we were ready. Get up to the window and she looked strung out and withered away! Conveniently right next door to our place, but differing opinions on service here. Drive through does not work apparently, even though the store just went through a huge renovation. Twice we have pulled up between 8:20pm and 8:30pm just to have the employees inside shoo us away before we have gotten out of the car. Anyway enough of the negative, the ice cream was good as usual when you want a sweet treat on a hot summer day. Line was humongous! It's just your typical burger and ice cream place. Nothing dazzling. The place is busy, so they must be doing something right. I ordered a combo meal with a soda-- just your average meal. My meals was lacking fries (see photo). The cashier was nice. The inside was squishy as they have a few tables for folks to sit. The rest is standing room. Drive thru isn't operational. First of all. I'm been to this location a few times. The staff is courteous. The grilled food is good. On my last my visit the deluxe double cheeseburger was not only presented picture perfect but tasted great. Way better tasting than anything served by the "McClown" next door. I had a terrible experience at this DQ (Odenton, MD) on 6/12/21. After driving over 20 mins out of my way to get to this location and waiting in a line that wrapped around the building, I was disappointed to encouter such poor customer service. I arrived at the location aroind 1:31p.m. I waited patiently for 15-20 mins for my turn to place an order. I asked the attendent, who later identified herself as Tracy (the Manager), for a small Reese bilzard with extra Reese's on top. Tracy in formed me that she could not fulfill my request, because it is the company's policy to flip the blizard prior to giving it to the customer and the candy would fall off. I requested that my blizard not be flipped and Tracy refused stating that she had to flip the blizard. Then I asked if I could have the Reese's blizard with the extra candy on the side. I reiterated my willingness to pay for the additional candy.Tracy again refused my request. As such I did not make a purchase that day. I communicated that other DQ locations have obliged without issue. Tracy informed me that this DQ is independently owned and cited that it's policy to not provide toppings. I am not sure when it has ever been policy to not service customers and decline to make a sale/up sale the products. I would also like to add that Tracy did not have on a badge. When I called the store to leave a message for the owners she hung up on me. So I'm likley not going to this location ever again. I might not utilize DQ at all, as there aren't man locations in MD and the few that are nearest to me are inconvenient. Untimely I'm not driving out of my way for poor customer service. This place is literally never open. We live fairly close to this DQ and I would say the last two-three years their hours have been super inconsistent. We went again tonight at 6:30pm for some ice cream (we only decided to because we got excited when we saw it was 'open' the other day)... and it was closed. On a weekend at 6:30p?? I am convinced they are either understaffed, the owner doesn't need the income, or it's haunted and always closed but once in a while you see ghosts of the drive-thru's past come through and get an ice cream cone. Thats the time people are usually just getting off work and would like to go here for themselves or a nice family outing but with a 5pm closing time you can't even do that! Also the drive thru takes forever! They still don't allow people in to order either. Also even if you show up to the drive thru 5 minutes before closing they refuse to serve you because I guess they're just trying to hurry up and close and go home. I get being safe during this time but this is the only business I know that has made it this hard to go to! Even now when things are opening up more. Do better Dairy Queen of Odenton!
