Coffee & Strawberry Soft Serve Swirl
    Kourtney B.

I only had about 24 hours in Salem and I had to make the most of it. During my research of local eats I learned they had a little family owned ice cream stand that's been slinging frozen goodies since 1952. Labor Day is the end of a lot of seasonal fun in certain areas of MA, but lucky for me Dairy Witch was still slinging frozen treats until October. Since I was headed out that direction, Dairy Witch being a mere 9 minute stroll from Proctor's Ledge, it was truly meant to be. It's also just down the road from Walgreens. Normally that's a who cares thing, but this Walgreens is the site of the start of the "Great Salem Fire" in 1914 so you can check out the plaque. Dairy Witch is also just a block away from Black Veil Shoppe. If you're in town for touristy shiz you gotta make the trek over to those spots as well. They are a bit of respite from the main drag of chaos, camp, and cheese. I love cheese, but my fave dairy will always be ice cream. Dairy Witch's menu, pretty extensive for such a small stand, provided me with plenty of options. Shakes, floats, lots of flavors of ice cream scoops in cups or cones, soft serve, sundaes and I don't just mean banana split. They've got fluffer nutter and chocolate cake sundaes too. The list goes on! I have never been so sad to only have two hands. There was no line, since we went at 1pm on a Tuesday, a slightly drizzly Tuesday at that. But with a line you'd have time to debate internally what you want to order. I'll also note the cashier/server working the stand was friendly and patient while I decided what I wanted. After much consideration, I finally picked my treats. While on vacation I like to get things I can't get back home, have never seen before, or have heard is a specialty of the house. My mother picked a candy bar ice cream, tasty sure, but too familiar for my tastes. I was sold on soft serve when I saw they offer a coffee/strawberry swirl. Whaa? Fascinating. I've seen chocolate & vanilla, orange & vanilla, and even a matcha & vanilla in Asian shops. But in MA they're eating coffee & strawberry swirls?! Must try. I'd also read about their Banana Whipped Frappe. "A whole banana blended with vanilla ice cream and secret combinations of flavorings" sounds simple enough. It's been around for decades and I knew I wanted to taste the nostalgia/magic for myself. I ate my cone first sitting behind the Dairy Witch, wondering if this is where cool kids hang out as only loitering local teens do. As I am a thirty something who has never been cool in my life, I assume they'd know cooler places to take their ice cream. I was curious who would come out while I worked my way through the coffee & strawberry, delicious and not too coffee flavored, ice cream. Couples of all ages on dates, families, solo guys on their lunch break looking for something cold. So really it was everyone. Then it was time to enjoy my banana whipped frappe. The secret flavorings? A mystery. All I tasted was delicious banana, not completely pureed so I enjoyed the texture, the vanilla, and the creamy icey frothiness that sustained me on my leisurely stroll back to the hustle and bustle of downtown Witch City USA. Who'd have thought a banana milkshake would be the best thing I had in town? Not me! But there I was, sitting in a Lyft speeding away from Salem, remembering my time there as a blur of too many capers, cheesy witch merch, bad fish at a haunted hotel, and one delicious banana treat. The Dairy Witch is clearly a local favorite, a beloved institution. If you're planning when to head to Salem, check that Dairy Witch is open for the season, usually in early April-early October from what I've seen online. I know the next time I go I'm going with 4 arms, and maybe I'll get ice cream after lunch AND dinner.

Medium (2 Scoops) Hard Ice Cream Cone: "Cake Batter" on top and "Oreo Cookie" on bottom: Bewitchingly tasty :)

I was staying in Salem for a wedding and Dairy Witch was practically next door to the Airbnb I was staying in. Needless to say, I had to come and grab some ice cream and am glad to say it was very tasty! I walked up around 8:30pm and there was a small line for both windows, so this was a good sign to me! After a few minutes, I was greeted by a courteous, young woman who took my order. My order was pretty straight-forward and not even a minute later, I was enjoying some ice cream. I ordered a medium (two scoops of hard ice cream) ice cream cone, with my hard ice cream flavors being "Oreo Cookie" and "Cake Batter". The scoops were HUGE!! I was very grateful that they gave me the cone but placed it in a big bowl with a plastic spoon - this made it SO much easier to enjoy. The ice cream was cold and creamy, excellent. Honestly, I thought both flavors were great, I can't decide which one was better. Grabbing an ice cream cone from Dairy Witch was the perfect way to end a day walking around a hot and humid downtown Boston. This is definitely a cool little ice cream shop that scoops up some big flavors (and portions) and treats. I definitely would come back the next time I'm passing through Salem.

Pictures are worth a thousand words and I'm feeling fat after two orders. I first went with the pumpkin soft serve with crunch. I could've gone without the crunch. The pumpkin ice cream is definitely something to eat again. It tasted like a nice delicious pumpkin pie! Reesie's peanut butter cup ice cream is exactly what it is. Ordered it with soft serve ice cream. Nice combination of reesie's pieces and peanut butter cups. I need to go for a run now!

Employee on Thursday may 5th was awesome, friendly, polite. The crunch topping is a nice mix with the soft serve.

If I could give this place 6 stars, I would! Located conveniently a block from my Airbnb, this place became my new dessert to go every night. They have a small parking lot, but with how many people come here you'll have to find street parking. It moves fairly fast and the employees seem to like their job. The prices are more than fair, a medium lasted me two days! They have soft serve and hard. Tons of flavors and even more toppings. They even do a sundae of the week. This place has it all. I love the look and the history, it's your perfect type of drive up summer ice cream with the besties. My only suggestion is that they put in some tables and chairs!

Man I am all about the flavors and this place didn't have any fun ones! I especially love chocolate based and chunky ice creams and that wasn't an option. However, this place does stock Richardson's ice cream so you know what they do have is good. I got a peanut butter cup (peanut butter based with giant chunks of Reese's inside). It was definitely amazing. The prices are typical for other places in the area (3.85 for the smallest size) but to be fair, they gave me so much that I had trouble eating it fast enough before it was melting all over my hand. So good bang for your buck, but a little bit unreasonable for the smallest size.

I love love love this place. Coffee swirl with strawberry? Never heard of it but it's excellent! The special crunch on the outside makes it extra special. Couldn't stop eating & can't wait to go back

Came here after eating at Maki's in Peabody. Got coffee soft serve with crunch on a cone. That crunch is what stood out to me. It's like sprinkles with toffee pieces and peanuts? You order from the window and go. I didn't really see a place to sit, just parking spots. Must try! Enjoy!

I went specifically for ice cream because I was looking for a nearby ice cream shop, and this one caught my eye. It wasn't too crowded when I visited, and the staff was relaxed, friendly, and helpful while getting my scoop ready. I ordered a cookies-and-cream-style flavor with a blue base and cookie crumbles, and it was exactly what I needed on a hot Friday afternoon during a Massachusetts heat wave. I got the smallest (pixie, 4oz) size, and it was plenty for me. Overall, it's a very cute, kitschy little shop that's easy to pop into if you're in town. I wish I'd had more time to explore the gifts and chocolates, but even just stopping in for ice cream was a fun treat.
