The funny thing is I packed a boring salad for lunch today but I had to run an errand. Across the street was Dakari's. I immediately pulled up because why have a salad when you can have wings, cabbage, greens and cornbread (what an interesting but delectable take on it). I ordered the Momma Jazzy wings fried hard and they were perfect. Customer service was top notch and the restaurant is very cute. It's like visiting family. Thank you but no thank you. I've been wanting to check this eatery out but with hours of operation and my schedule, it is often missed. Today I was in luck! The order was called in (super friendly young lady) and was ready within 20 minutes. Catfish, potato salad, cabbage. Very eager to grab a fork and dig in. Cabbage was fresh but not seasoned. The potato salad base was flavorful but when mixed in with the potatoes it lost its touch. The potatoes had a weird gritty texture as if they were boiled a day or two before. I could have done without both. Catfish- well seasoned, perfect crunch! No tartar sauce or hot sauce? For $25, I had higher expectations. My second chance I have given this business & both times disappointed. This food was absolutely not flavorful, not tasty and just down right bad. What a waste! The Mac and Cheese seemed like a box of Kraft. The Brown stew chicken was atrocious. The cornbread was nothing more than someone's brilliant idea of a let's try to be unique epic fail, it was noticeably made with purely cake mix not cornbread textured at all. Don't expect to be blown away by the interior, but be ready for the food. My wife ordered Catfish with Yams and green beans, I ordered ribs with Mac & cheese and collar greens. The young men serving were helpful and brought some very tasty corn bread. The catfish was sizzling and well seasoned not dry and very, very good and huge portions. The green beans were great and the yams were Sunday dinner perfect. Anything BBQ should be able to be served without BBQ sauce. The sauce is supposed to be an added treat. My ribs were smoking, delicious and so so perfectly seasoned, that I was sucking on the bones. The collard greens were tasty, but the Mac and cheese blew me away. Yes, they were perfectly cheesy and gooey, but they had this amazing seasoning that was so good that I ordered some to go. Since my wife works a few miles away. Desiring fried fish but none in the fridge...I trusted Yelp to guide me (In the spirit of transparency I was on the search for an ice cream sundae-Yelp reminded me of my review a couple of years ago-leading me to Edgewood, which made me think of fish, and the usual conv store has changed its hours)..... so, back to Dakari Less than a mile from ice cream I called to confirm hours of operation and fish options. Pleasant interaction over the phone, I chose whiting and two sides: Mac n cheese and grilled broccoli. I advised that I might be delayed (due to ice cream) and she was kind enough to say they would wait a bit before frying so it would still be hot when I got there! 30min or so from closing the limited seating restaurant was empty, but one patron was outside in his car waiting. I was able to walk in, snap a few pics, pay, and walk out w no issues. I did ask for tartar sauce (packs only) and seemingly they ?don't have hot sauce? Not sure how a soul food restaurant doesn't offer hot sauce...maybe just not to-go? Honestly, I was still full from the sundae, but it looked so good I had to nibble a bit-glad I did, and looking fwd to actually eating the entire meal Don't waste your time trying to eat the Mac n cheese w the plastic fork they give you-TOO CHEESY AND THICK (like i like). The grilled broccoli had an interesting seasoning...not simply salt snd pepper. 3rd visit So i stopped in on this raining afternoon and grabbed lunch. Hits- The lake trout was delicious. Hot and crispy and perfectly seasoned. 4 stars Collard greens - they were even more yummy than the last time. 5 stars Cornbread- sooooo good! If you like sweet cornbread (who doesn't) you'll love it! Misses Potato salad - so i guess maybe they don't use mustard and if so barely any. There was hardly any flavor and the chunks just too big. Lemon cake- the cake abs icing had good flavor but seemed a bit stale. Perhaps it was a few days old. Even after letting it sit for a bit it didn't get any better I love the fact we have a black owned soul food restaurant in HC. I have been a long-time customer and supporter of Dakari's in Edgewood. My family was treated like family there and we are happy to support good black businesses, although the food was sometimes hit or miss. However, as a VIP member I received the Prime Rib Special flyer attached via email. I called in my order just before closing at 6 (web site said 8). I picked up the order, paid, tipped, and was even told "That's a big old prime rib you got there" on my way out the door... Imagine my surprise when the other picture attached was what I found when I got home and opened the bag. I didn't expect it to look exactly like the flyer but I've never known ANY beef to be made of white meat or any prime rib to be that small. It was a pork chop...not "juicy", "well marbled", "high quality roast cut", or "thick sliced" like it says on the flyer. It wasn't even beef, and btw, I also ordered a "salad" that looked like the peppers, onions, and lettuce they put on steak subs and burgers, thrown in a container. When I called back the next day to tell them I paid for prime rib but got a pork chop and to get my money back, the man on the phone insisted that if it had a bone sticking out of it, it was prime rib. I wasn't born yesterday. Cows have bones and so do pigs. I told him it was white meat, just like a pork chop. He wouldn't back down and I didn't want to lose it with him over the phone, so I told him he just lost a loyal customer and family. I love Dakari's story and really wanted to support them but to be insulted by the cook and then by the staff, not to mention $35 dollars for a pork chop, that's the last straw. A friend recommended Dakari's so I decided to try it for Sunday dinner. I ordered baked chicken, greens, sweet potatoes, Mac-n-cheese, and peach cobbler. For the most part everything was good. I took away a star for the peach cobbler and mac-n-cheese. The peach cobbler was missing something, but I can't put my finger on what exactly and the mac-n-cheese was simply over baked I almost needed a knife to eat it. I live very close this restaurant and I am a big supporter of small businesses. My first visit was an order of griiled salmon with veggies. I actually liked the meal, portions were rather small, but tasted good. the greens were a little too salty for me but that's just my opinion. Some time went by and I ordered again. This time smothered turkey wings, cabbage, sweet potatoes. I'm not sure what type of gravy was on the wings but it was more gelatin in nature than smooth gravy. I reheated it up and it still wasn't a smooth gravy consistency. the turkey wings were big and meaty. the cabbage was diced/cut into small pieces. reminded me of slaw or something. wasn't a fan of that. the sweet potatoes were sweet! I mean sweet and syrupy. Again, this is my opinion, there was so much sugar I had a hard time tasting the potatoes. All in all, for what I paid for my second meal I won't be ordering that again. I will try them again in the future, but I'll stick to seafood. I do think they are worth a visit, we don't have many places to eat in Edgewood unless you want fast food. The cabbage tasted unseasoned and was undercooked. The fried chicken was undercooked as well and lacked flavor.
