I didn't know about Southern Blues until my work ordered it for our holiday party. It was AMAZING. I then ordered it for my daughter's grad party. Everyone agreed their chicken is outstanding - people were actually talking about it. Native Baltimoreans were saying it was the best chicken they had had in B-more. We also got the mac and cheese, cornbread, and the giant fruit platter-all of which were great. The fruit platter was fresh, and the fruit was ripe. The gentleman who coordinated my order (Vernon?) was patient and made the order easy. He helped me figure out how much to order and how to get and use the Sternos. On the day of the party, the food was delivered right on time and tightly wrapped to prevent spills and keep the hot food hot. The young man who delivered the food was equally as helpful and friendly as Vernon. Highly recommend this Baltimore gem. read more

Attended an event that was catered by Southern Blues and here is my updated review: The potato salad was delicious but in my 1 scoop of seafood salad there was not 1 whole shrimp but plenty of imitation crabmeat. The flavor is there but the seafood is not. The string beans and sweet potatoes taste straight from a can. No condiments provided for the fried fish and chicken and the servers could not tell the difference between a breast or thigh. The baked and fried chicken was dry and extremely large except for the wings. I was really hoping to have a better experience as this was through catering but my review remains the same. I wanted soul food and did a google search for my area and this popped up. I have heard some good things about this location, I looked at reviews prices etc and decided to give it a shot. No, I will not return this was it. Fried catfish not much flavor, greens tasty but there were more stems than anything. Potatoes salad had good flavor but there was something about how the potatoes tasted almost like just before they breakdown due to mayo. Before I purchased I asked about the consistency of the mac & cheese. The young lady let me taste it, I didn't like it so I opted for the potatoe salad. Finally listed inside on their menu board the catfish dinner was listed as $18.99/ $15.49 entree. I asked the young lady what was the difference and her explanation was $15.49 was meat only ( entree) and $18.99 was meat and 2 sides. All my life of dining out an entree includes 1 or 2 sides. On my way back into PA from Baltimore, I stopped at Southern Blues because it made it into the top five soul food recommendations by a cousin who's currently running for city council in Lancaster, PA. He said, "It's not in Baltimore, but on your way back to PA, stop there." There were a couple of locations, but I decided to stop at the one at 8406 Harford Road in Parkville. I knew there was something to it when there was no parking in the small lot they share with a strip mall spa--or on the street. I had to make a U-turn at the Sunoco gas station just to find street parking near the restaurant. The swishing of the busy road immediately became background noise when I pulled open the glass convenience store-style doors and walked into the sounds of a place that had all the hallmarks of being a great food spot. The place is takeout-only, with a mix of delivery app drivers, online orders, call-ins, and walk-ins. At first, you're not quite sure where to order--until you catch a glimpse of the dark "Order Here" sign and the unimpressed young man looking your way from behind a register. No "hi," just: "Are you paying with a card?" Between taking our order, he picked up the ringing phone and leaned into the counter--one hand on his hip, the other cradling the phone like he was about to spit the best game to the person on the other end. After he took our order--baked turkey wings with gravy over rice, collard greens, and sweet potatoes for me; fried catfish, mac, sweet potatoes, and cornbread muffins (wrapped in plastic wrap) for my partner--the place kept moving. This is a carryout style restaurant, and the food is really based on southern cuisine. It doesn't go all over the place; a southern menu that stays true to the food that is served. I really loved the fried catfish. Seasoned perfectly! The collard greens were very good. They season them and that's not easy. Many places are afraid to season some dishes, which is a disservice to customers. I also liked the mashed potatoes and gravy. The peach cobbler completed the meal. This restaurant is take out style only. We immediately noticed that Southern Blues was fully staffed to accommodate take out and delivery orders. Placed our order well before 9pm (an hour+ before close), and our time on the order began to juggle. From 10:19 the latest time and the fastest being 9:38 at one point. Time after time my GrubHub driver is telling me how bad their service is and how our order is not ready. She was in fact told to wait for the food in her car, but was never further instructed on what to do or when the food was actually ready. 1 Waiting 50 minutes for 2 meals and a dessert, agreeably unacceptable. 2 I in fact did not receive my dessert - which was supposed to be the banana pudding. When the food did arrive an hour and 20 minutes later (30 minutes past close and oh, we live 12 minutes from the address...), did it taste good? Yes, 4/5. I ordered two meals: surf and turf (wings and whiting) with greens and yams; and turkey wings with mashed potatoes and cabbage. It felt like the first time I tried the original Southern Blues ova west. The food was SO good y'all; my soul was touched! The fish and chicken were seasoned and fried to perfection and the yams weren't too sweet or syrupy. The turkey wings were tender and juicy. My only complaint is the lack of flavor in the gravy I received on the side for my mashed potatoes, otherwise it was all delicious. I went there on a Saturday around 6pm. I was nervous it would be super busy and tried to call ahead but no one answered. There were a few cars in the parking g lot when I got there. Service was fast and friendly and I had my take out in less than 10 minutes. I ordered the turkey dinner with collard greens and candied yams. The portion size was big. The turkey was well seasoned and juicy. The greens were good but I don't know if they cooked them with a smoked meat and the candied yams were good but too sweet for me. The star was the peach cobbler. It wasn't sugary sweet like alot of people make it. It reminded me of my great grandmothers. They gave me alot of crust (which I like) and the peaches were perfect. Southern Blues has been in my neighborhood for some time, now. When it first opened, it wasn't a sit down restaurant, so it kind of took me a little while to give it a try. On a recent evening, I decided that it was time to try them out. After reading reviews, patrons suggested ordering ahead, because the wait times would sometimes be a bit long. I did just that and ordered online. I decided upon the fried catfish, macaroni and cheese and greens. A piece of cornbread comes along with it. I was very excited and couldn't wait to get my meal. My pickup time was 8:30 pm. I walked in exactly at that time and my food was sitting, ready to go. I paid and headed home. Now just a quick note, the parking lot is a bit small. On a busy day, just use caution, as it can be a bit of a squeeze getting out. Now, I live about less than ten minutes away from Southern Blues. When I went to eat my dinner, I noticed that everything lukewarm. I'm assuming that my food was done way before the pick up time. None of this was an end all be all, but it still was slightly disappointing. The fish was pretty good and I think it would have been a knockout if it had been consumed fresh out of the fryer. The greens were probably my favorite out of everything. They were tender, well seasoned, and delicious. The Mac and cheese is just okay. I couldn't put my finger on it, but the Mac was similar to Velveeta cheese. It's not baaad, but not top notch macaroni and cheese. It's creamy & cheesy, but could've been way better. I took maybe two bites of the cornbread, and ended up discarding the rest. It was sweet, but dry. It came in a sandwich bag. That was kind of interesting for a restaurant. While this use to be one of my favorite spots it has gone down significantly. The greens are often salty and I guess it depends who is cooking that day. The customer service sucks. The young people are often on their phone and talking with each other. They never acknowledge you with "hello or how may I help you." They simply just look at you when you get to the register and I guess you are suppose to just begin ordering. Another thing that they do that is irritating is once you place the order they say they will bring it to your car. The problem is that they are so busy playing and doing other things that they often forget. I waited in my car for almost 45 minutes when I decided to go in and see what was taking so long and guess what, my order was sitting on the counter no one ever came out.
