Back in April, after repeated illness over a period of about six weeks and numerous visits to the vet, we finally found out that our ten year old cat Mantis had bladder stones. On the x-rays, it appeared that Mantis had either one large stone or several small stones, and our primary veterinarian encouraged us to book an appointment for emergency surgery with DVSC as soon as possible due to the risk of a blockage (particularly since he is a male cat). We were able to get an appointment the next day, and Dr. Wilkens from DVSC performed the surgery. When Dr. Wilkens got into the cat's bladder, he discovered that Mantis did not have one bladder stone or a few small stones, but FIFTY stones. It appears the cat had had this condition for quite some time and had simply not presented obvious symptoms until it was out of control. Dr. Wilkens was able to flush out Mantis' bladder and get all of the stones out, and we brought the cat home 24 hours later. The next week was rough for the cat; this was a major surgery, and he was on pain medication and had to stay in a small room to keep him from jumping around and possibly tearing the incision in his abdomen. But he recovered without any complications, and three months later, it is like we have a new cat; he is more playful, isn't as lethargic as he once was, and seems generally happier overall. Though the surgery was very expensive, it was worth every penny; Dr. Wilkens saved my cat's life. My only wish is that we'd caught this condition a bit sooner. I went in today with my Big Boy Hank (95 lbs), he has a torn CCL in his back right knee. Went to my regular vet doc and got this referral. I ALSO have a left bad, no cartilage knee. So I Needed help as he is not used to that place or the cage that I got the day before. I live in Rowlett, this is in North Plano, so driving highway and putting him in a big wire cage is iffy. All good. What I liked about Dr. Wilkens is that he explained Everything. I ask a lot of questions, but he was very patent and informative. All staff is professional, very recommended. Super happy with the knowledge and bedside manner of everyone I've met today.... However the vet we saw when we came in for the initial emergency visit didn't actually read the image report for our cat. He told us her leg was broken and it was a fracture in her growth plate on her ankle. Sigh. It's just that the incorrect diagnosis changes everything about her treatment plan. I read the report in the car on the way home and called back and he argued with me. Anyway, we had a follow up appointment with the orthopedist, got MUCH better info and great treatment. Our little cat got a soft cast and did great. We were out of town for the next follow up and the house sitter brought her in. The sitter was young, but was treated with respect. Malpractice at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center After performing an unlawful surgery without consent, DVSC refused to give any refund if we speak up. When we brought our dog into DVSC in the morning on 7/30/2021, we thought she might have a herniated disk and may be a candidate for surgery. During the consultation we clearly communicated verbally and in writing to call and consult with us immediately after the CT scan before any procedure be performed. We also told with the technician we previously had a dog who suffered a brain tumor and died, and that we needed to be included in deciding what would be best for our dog. The technician even wrote explicit instructions at the top of the form to call us before any operation. But no one called. We reached out at 3pm and were told that they were getting ready to do the CT scan. The receptionist adamantly confirmed the surgeon would call us with the scan results before any further procedures. No one called, and when we called them again at 4:30pm we were informed that a surgery already took place. We never received a pre-op consultation, even with multiple requests. Instead, DVSC responded to our repeated phone calls with false assurances and proceeded with an unlawful and unauthorized surgery. DVSC admitted their mistake and gave us a waiver to sign. We did not sign the waiver because it (1) prohibits the contact we had already made with the credit card company, (2) unethically prohibits the complaint we filed with the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and (3) does not provide a full refund of our deposit. We feel obligated to share this with pet owners and vets, to prevent anyone else from being harmed and cheated by Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. read more

Can't say enough about everyONE we encountered over the last 20 years ... professional, caring, patient, skilled! As a pet owner when your family member (pet) is seriously injured you will do anything to help them get well. We brought our dog Tito to Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center on Custer in Plano immediately after her "accident" where they stopped his bleeding and gave him meds for 2 days. After 2 days they send him to the other half of the building where they do surgery. The bill for that 2 day stay was $1,400! After you pay them their E.R money the dog is ready for surgery so the vet performing the surgery (fracture to the rear of his jaw) tells you his assessment and recommendations. The Vet said he was unable to exam Tito because he would have to be put under, but he look and the xrays and he needed his fractured jaw to be repaired. His estimate between $2,600 to $2,800 to perform the surgery. Although he did not touch Tito he also charged us $135.00 for an exam. So that would be $1,400.00 + $2,800.00 + 135.00 = $4,335.00 Fortunately our horse vet in Durant Ok, Dr Mills said that "this is not a difficult surgery and I do them all the time." We sent the itemized estimate along with the xray and Tito was car- flighted to Durant and operated on that afternoon. He came home in great shape the next day!!! Dr Mills fee for the exact same surgery was.............$402.00!!!!. When a pet gets hurt they are part of your family and you will do anything to help them, unfortunately some vets take advantage of this. Dr Mills is a man who loves all animals all kinds and he is NOT in it for the money just for the love of what he does. Have been really happy with procedures in the past. How quickly we were able to be seen and booked for surgery.

This place has the worst staff there is no sense of urgency, no consideration for the pet & owner relationship. I sat for an hour listening to my puppy Yelp in another room, they would not allow us to console one another while waiting for the doctor to review the case. Every person we talked too didn't know our dog was female and the paperwork listed different ages on each sheet. Best thing about this place is there free WiFi and that didn't work that well. Wouldn't recommend bringing any animal you care about to this place unless you have to due to the time of day. read more

We recently moved to the area. My 5 month old kitten jumped from our second floor staircase balcony and broke her leg. My vet in Allen recommended this surgery center. They were fantastic. The doctor gave me several options but we went with putting a pin in her leg, a very complex operation on a small kitten. The receptionist was professional and to the point, but not rude. They are a busy place, so they are very to the point but I felt service was great. Follow up visits have all been consistently professional and I'm happy I found them. Hope I never need them again. I took my dog for an ear exam. She was diagnosed and was to have a complete ear canal ablasion.The doctor gave me conflicting stories and I was told I was to return the next morning and stay and keep my dog calm while they ran some tests. I came the next day and they said oh no my dog has to be dropped off. MY job requires notice and I tried to stay there with her but they said no and that they claim they told me on my first visit to drop off. Was not happy. I get my dog home and the clinic closed and she continously cried in pain for hours. I had a little medicine left from my regular vet luckily though Dr Barstad said Bambi my 4 lb chiuhuahua did not need medicine that she would be fine. Well she had her ears dug in to to clean them out and check for her problems. I would think after digging in an ear for half an hour and clean it out you would be sore..At any rate I obsessed about the rudeness of the receptionist and the pompous Dr. I just did not trust them to help my dog. Well The operation Bambi needs is so complex no vet would help because she had to have a specialist. DVSC is the only game in town. Finally after 5 hours on the internet and phone calls I found a clinic who is going to help. They know a surgeon that has done plenty of these surgeries with good outcome. It has been 5 days since her exam with Dr Barstad. Now my dog is so sick she can't eat and she then she threw up and was so weak I tried to call the Dr back and he pretty much said too bad so sad. I take full responsibility for my actions I only wanted my dog to be helped. I may lose Bambi because of my mistake and the pain is unbearable. The guilt is tremendous. My regular vet says we would try and treat her until she can have surgery I don't think she will make it because she is so sick. Just people be careful when you choose anyone from this clinic to examine and diagnose your pet. No matter their arrogance mine was worse.I love my dog so much and to lose her is killing me. read more

We took our 8 month old puppy for a routine orthopedic surgery on his knee only to have them somehow carelessly cut his foot with scissors at the end of his knee surgery. The cut was a huge laceration and they had to stitch and bandage it up and said we needed to come back after the weekend because they think the skin they cut by accident may need to be cut off. Once we got him home we realized his front paw has also been cut and is bleeding. We believe these cuts are due to carelessness when cutting off the tape on his paws used to hold him down during surgery. The cuts he has are no where near his knee which is where he needed the surgery. We will NOT ever go back to this place. They also charged us $1800 for all of this. Honestly, would not recommend to go here. The first thing the vet said is he didn't know what my dog had but was going to give him antibiotics. He immediately told us it would be $500 plus the visit. I had to tell him if he could run test for parvo. Which he had most of the symptoms, he said yes it would be 30minutes. 1 hour passed and I had to call them to get information from them. The doctor said he had parvo and he had to stay 48hrs there and the fee would be 2,500. After 3 hours of waiting and calling to get information we decided to not leave him there. I told the doctor we were taking him home with us, he said we still had to pay to get our dog back. OFCOURSE, we knew that!!! He said it would be another 10minutes which meant another hour. I called them after 10 minutes and my calls would not go thru. Looks like they had blocked my number. I never got the results for anything, just the receipt of what we payed for. Still waiting on them to email me paperwork, worst experience with this place. read more
