I was very unhappy with the entire experience from start to finish. The only good part of the dining experience is that our waitress was very nice. First I ordered panne cotto as an appetizer and arancini. The panne cotto was all beans and only 4 pieces of escarole. The arancini was sub par, they were not crunchy on the outside like they should be and the meat on the inside was not tasty. Then we receive salads that arrive with three pieces of shaved carrot, the greens were fresh but not a single tomato or cucumber. I ordered steak which was delicious. However my side was asparagus which was a strange color green and undercooked. My husband ordered filet mignon which he enjoyed and the sweet potato fries that came with the filet mignon were delicious. Now of course upon going into the restrooms the small hallway was jammed with high chairs and dining chairs and you could barely get in and out the door. We visited Dalton's this week on a Thursday around 5pm. Initial impression; small space, but nice sized bar area and clean. So that's good. I always sit at the bar on an initial visit to a new restaurant. This spot says a lot about a place. Greetings were mediocre not sure if the tenders were wanting to be there but not horrible. It was particularly quiet in the restaurant and for such a decent sized bar, it could have used some music or something. I could picture some nice jazz in a place like this; instead, with the restaurant portion quite full and the bar area pretty busy, it felt like I was dining in a senior center. Not that that's a bad thing, its just on a summer evening, in a nice looking place, the overall atmosphere was bland at best. The food looked good but I would NOT stay and try based solely on the fact that I felt sleepy and don't think I would have made it to dinner without a loud snore!! This is my go to restaurant. I have eaten here dozens of times and I have never been disappointed by the food, the service, the drinks and the ambience of the place. Last night was no exception to my previous experiences. We were a table of six. Drink order was perfect and I can tell you that the size of the drink is amazing. You will be hard pressed to find drinks this size as price anywhere else in the area. I had the escarole and bean soup which was hot and tasty. The bread they bring comes with an incredible chimichurri sauce that is worth the trip alone. I had the stuffed calamari which was a special appetizer for my dinner and it was delicious. My dining companions had steaks, a veal dish, mahi mahi and the tomato mozzarella appetizer. We all were very happy with our choices. Three desserts later we finished our dinner and lingered to enjoy our company. We were not rushed out and since it was a Wednesday night we could do this without a problem. This place exceeded my expectations. The staff were very attentive. They had these garlic knots and bread that came w this yummy cilantro dipping sauce. Their coconut martini was amazing! For dinner I ordered the short rib w mashed potatoes, it was one of their specials and it was so tender! yes the food is really pretty good and deserving of 3 or 4 stars but we could not get beyond how dirty and worn this place is. Perhaps everything was more visible this visit because it was lunch and there was more light in the dining room but GROSS..our table was set with 3, yes 3, dirty b&b plates with food stuck on them. Even a vision empaired person would know better to set with these. In addition the china is metal marked ( which btw with a little extra care of 3 or 4 plates a day this is eliminated) and other tables had the same filmy, dirty looking tabletop. There was a film on our wine glasses as well which again with a litte care can be eliminated. This place has a definate need of some front of the house attention, ripped wallpaper, filthy ceiling by the vents in the dining room, chairs with the seat bottoms falling down, hand prints on the glass wall to open kitchen...and more. Perhaps the 'worst and most grumpy' waitress I have ever encountered. Short black hair about 30 years old. We were there between lunch and dinner and I was trying to get my parents something to eat because 95 was jammed and we took route 80. This waitress was huffing and puffing and clodding about. Annoyed that my parents - in their 80's took their time ordering. I thought the ravioli was really good, but there is no way we are going back with this woman. maybe I'll poke my head in the door and see if she is there first. A night out with the girls for an "advertised Happy Hour" on the Dalton's website turned out to be not so happy. It was advertised 1/2 price apps with a drink purchase until 6:30pm, but to our dismay, this applied only to bar seating. We requested bar seating but there was only a 2 person table which when asked if we could sit there the waitress said no it's for 2 only, we were 4. We had our drink less the apps we intended to have and left. Very unaccommodating. We also feel their website should be updated to state Happy Hour Bar area only !! read more

Small place in an odd location but surprisingly good food. The atmosphere was upscale casual. The servers were very friendly and not overbearing. The garlic knots (and dipping sauce) were amazing. Excellent! Very busy, but still had excellent service & a great meal. Bread & garlic knots were served with a garlic/scallion type spread which was really tasty! We ordered one of the special appetizers & meals. There were many specials to choose from in addition to an already impressive menu. The special appetizer was Scallops with Lobster stuffing. Delicious & the sauce was really good. Tasted like it might have been lobster bisque. We also had the Crabcake appetizer which was very good, dressed with garlic, capers, tomatoes & scallions. My boyfriend had the special Rack of lamb with a blueberry reduction served with roasted potatoes & broccoli. He enjoyed it very much. Waitstaff was attentive & friendly. My experience at Dalton's was not good. The place was extremely noisy. Our calmari appetizer was chewy. My main course of had tough overdone shrimp and raw scallops. I will say they gladly took the price of the dinner off our bill and offered to make me another meal, but I could not eat another bite after biting into raw seafood. My wife and I have been coming here for 15 years. We go about every other month, so I guess we've had close to 100 meals. I can count the number of times we haven't been very satisfied on one hand. The standard menu is always accompanied by inventive specials. The salmon and Chilean sea bass are particular favorites, as are the Black Angus Steak Cristal and the lobster ravioli and the risotto's. And we love the garlic knots! My husband and I went for dinner the other night, our first time dining at Daltons. Overall, I was totally satisfied. The restaurant was clean and the service was excellent. The bread they serve at the beginning of the meal was delicious. My husband ordered one of the specials which was steak with a lobster tail. He did not want it with the pasta and alfredo sauce and they were very accommodating. Said they could make it anyway he wanted. I ordered a chicken dish that was not even on the menu and they said they would make it for me. It was also delicious. Daltons is one of the best, local restaurants in the area. Their everyday menu is made up of quality options with daily specials that are fresh and tasty. Portions and quality of their food allows you to leave satisfied and content. They are known for their garlic balls which are made at their sister restaurant in north haven which means if you get them on the day they were made, they are awesome. Somedays it seems like you get a frozen batch or day old, then they aren't as good. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Great bar scene but unfortunately it spills into the dining area which means it gets pretty crowded during weekend nights. Not a huge place by any stretch. They certainly can pack em in. read more

The food here is excellent. It's heavy Italian fare, with a lot of variety, and they gladly customize your meal, making for virtually endless choices. Their garlic knot sauce is amazing. I don't know what's in it, but it tastes very, very garlicky. The only complaints I have are that the furniture and fixtures are crowded in with not much room to move around. If you get takeout, you have to squeeze sideways through a small pathway and stand awkwardly in a crowded, tiny area while you wait. Met a friend for a quick bite last night. We sat at the Bar. Daltons just reopened and it looks great! It has a clean open kitchen and the food is above expectations! Really delicious. We shared a seafood appetizer and the stuffed mushrooms app. It was beyond a good meal it was a great meal. The Bread and dipping sauce is yet another whole meal and super yummy. My only critique is not the food or the staff, (who are super folks and very good at what they do) it is the walls in the dinning room. They could use a little something...maybe its coming..maybe the designing and decorating is not finished since the reopening was only a week ago but the walls look a bit bare . We went here years ago and decided to try it again and regretted it almost immediately. Although a hostess was at the door she didnt take the time to acknowledge us when we walked in. We decided to sit and eat at the bar. The bartender was unhappy and after a bit finally took our order (they have a very limited beer menu). I think she wanted regulars at the bar and not newbies. Anyway we proceeded to try the oysters and burrata special for appetizers. For dinner we had sea bass with risotto and a steak. Both dishes were surprisingly bland, the steak was tough, the risotto and fish were just not very tasty. I love risotto but not this. Have eaten here numerous times. Appetizers and drinks wonderful. Entrees okay... Tonight we went in on a whim without a reservation around 6pm. Bar was crowded. Maybe 1/4 restaurant seated, I'm sure many tables were reserved biut stood in the doorway for a good 10 minutes. The hostess did not attempt to make ey contact once. We turned around and left. The food is terriffic, but I would have been more pleased if they could actually hold a table when you make a reservation. Same situation as the Seinfeld episode, they are able to "take" a reservation, but since they don't "hold" a table, it really defeats the point of making the reservation in the first place. There is no real waiting area, makes it not great waiting. If you have time on your hands, plan on waiting 45 minutes at least even though you have a reservation. This will happen every time. But the food is great, makes up for some of the waiting. read more

I used to love this place, I mean really love it. It was a go-to option on any night of the week. Over the last few years, however, it has kind of degraded. Service is still pretty good, the drinks and drink menu are all very good, but the food has gotten heavy. Its almost like they cook everything in a very heavy, rich, oil based vat. Sauces, toppings, and even things that seem like they should be on the lighter side, sit like lead in my stomach. We still go from time to time, but always experience the digestive issues coupled with an extremely heavy meal afterward.
