One day a woman was walking down the street and must have been dizzy or fell. I missed the incident happening Yet saw them rush out with water. Helping her to sit and stayed with her until she felt better enough to get up. This morning there was a domestic fight in the street. One man was calling police while outside and shirtless. They came over with a shirt for him. In this day and age of people ignoring others in distress or doing nothing and filming it...well to see these acts in my community, it restores my faith in humanity. Honestly one of the best barber shops I've been to. Every single barber there sets the bar high in terms of good service, kindness, professionalism and humor. I don't know how they do their hiring but they are doing something right. Props to this place; the vibe is on point, cuts are high quality, easy scheduling on Booksy. Chris cuts my hair and I'm always satisfied, but I've used some of the other folks in the crew before and been just as happy. The cherry on top is how welcoming they are. Glad to have found them. I found Monarch Barber Shop on my way back from grabbing lunch in the area. It happens to be only 3 blocks from home, so I checked the reviews and was impressed by what I saw, so I scheduled an appointment. I saw a few names listed positively in the reviews, but I booked with Cody. He was super efficient and detail oriented. Easy to chat with, but the environment it's self was inviting. There's a parking garage just around the corner as well, so you don't need to drive around downtown looking for a spot. This will be my new spot moving forward. Great cuts and great staff! I was greeted nicely by all of the staff when I first walked in. A very homie vibe with a very old school touch. A small lounge with couches to sit in while waiting along with a television set with old school boxing highlights to watch while you wait. They also provide beverages from all sorts of ranges if you catch my drift. Walked in to this barbershop today a little past noon to see if I could get an undercut done. It was dead empty for the exception of one person who I'm assuming was the barber. He was sitting on the couch, watching a movie and didn't even care to greet me. Maybe because I'm not a man? Still not an excuse. I politely said "Hello. I was just walking by and wanted to check the place out. How much do you charge for a haircut?" In a bothered tone, he said "$40." And nothing else. Lol, ok. I try to adhere to the old saying, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.' It is for this reason that I followed my favorite barber Tony Costa to Monarch Barber Shop from his previous location in North Park. Knowing Tony as a person I knew that wherever he went would be a relaxed atmosphere with top quality work and fine attention to detail. When I walked in I was not disappointed. The shop, located downtown, a stones throw from Petco park provides the opportunity to get an old school haircut from modern artists. As opposed to being too hipster and trendy as can be seen in some other shops, Monarch sets their own standard by being classy and forward thinking. It is the type of place you could see the Malboro Man getting his hair done right next to James Bond or Eric Hosmer. Parking is not as big an issue as you would think being so close to Petco Park. As far as the cut itself, Tony is always on point. I have never had a bad experience with him which has earned him my loyalty and respect. Came in the day of my wedding and got one of the best beard trims I've ever gotten. I didn't know exactly how to describe the length I wanted but my barber worked with me and went over my beard a few times until I was happy. And then... they get you with a hot towel straight razor shave to finish up all the lines and make everything look real good. I walked out of there looking so damn sharp. I've lived in SD (downtown) for almost two years and have bounced around 9 or 10 different Barber shops. Everything from Mom and Pop to the bigger chain locations... Every single one of them disappointed me with their lack of attention to detail, skillset, and consistency. This place is simply the best. They're new, but you can tell that their owner (Chris) knows what he's doing. He has a fantastic staff (Andrew is my go to), great ambiance (love the fact that I can have a glass of whiskey, watch some boxing highlights or play some PS4 while I wait), but most importantly they give GREAT CUTS! When I first walked in I was worried that they were handicapping their ability to give great cuts by their ambiance, but that wasn't the case at all. Literally the best Barber shop I've ever been to. Been coming here for awhile, but today was running late called ahead to let them know that I couldn't find parking. This place seems to be difficult because there's never parking and you have to be prompt. Really bad situation when you have rushing customers to get in there on time due to your policies at the location and you call to cancel. I'm done walking to this place, they don't even take card, this place operates like a small business and is like every other barber in town. Wouldn't waste your time with this, because if you have issues with parking, you're gonna have to turn around and pull cash because they take unconventional payment. If you would like to park in the garage located by their business, it's usually always full. I lack the commitment to give this place anymore of my money or not that you care, my time. I would recommend to this business, that they have a less tight appointment schedule, especially if your gonna be located right next petco park. Charmie for my last appointment called and let me know parking was a touch situation and was able to get there in time to find parking, this was another great tip, and I was able to tip her extra time. read more

I love this place. It has a lot of character the moment you walk in you feel like you have always been getting your hair cut here. All the barbers are really friendly and I had a great time hanging out while I was getting my hair cut. The complementary drinks are also a plus. My barber worked with me to figure out what would look best instead of just waiting for me to figure it out on my own.
