Traveling from Atlanta to Birmingham found this gem. We were a little skeptical at first as the restaurant is next to a gas station. From the minute we walked in Stephanie our server greeted us with a smile. The owner personally came to our table too. Ok - so... food was great! Cajun oysters and Voodoo pasta delicious and the owner - who's clearly a solid chef makes an off menu "seafood pot" that's ridiculous! .... The young wait staff is friendly which is in sharp contrast to the "not for the faint of heart" personality of the owner (yikes). This is a super treasure to find on our travels. We booked the RV park next door because of good reviews and sure enough the bar and restaurant are the same operation. GREAT food, a stellar bar and a staff of super friendly folks that know how to take care of their guests. Wings, salads and deserts were all top quality delicious. This was the best place in Anniston before it moved. New location is a bit tight on space and ambiance but the food is still great. If I were only reviewing the fettuccine alfredo this review would need to be 7 stars. I almost always order this for the value. $7.99 for the entre +$1 for a salad +4 for shrimp. We are from California and were in Atlanta on business. My husband and I have a goal to see all 50 states before we die so we decided to drive to Brimingham. It was late and the weather was bad so we stopped in Heflin looking for a place to have dinner. Thank goodness for Yelp and the great reviews! We LOVED it. I have the boursin cheese stuffed filet, beer battered and chicken fried steak. My husband had the stuffed oysters. The sweet tea was a southern treat and we loved the garlic bread. My parents and I had the opportunity to get out of Atlanta for the day during our trip to the south and wanted to peakbag in the Talladega mountains. After about 14 miles of hiking I had worked up quite an appetite. Damn Yankees was well-reviewed on yelp, so we planned to eat there after the hike. We were not disappointed! They were pretty busy with the pre-trick or treat crowd (we were there on Halloween) when we arrived. No worries though. We took a seat and browsed the menu. My dad had the grouper (catch of the day) and my mom and I both had the shrimp cheese grits. We all had sweet tea of course! I have never had better grits in my life and I make it a point to eat grits everytime I travel to the south. My dad loved the grouper, cleaned his plate! The waitress was very friendly in spite of being busy and we had a chance to meet the chef/owner after the meal. Very cool guy! If you are peakbagging in the Talladega mountains or just passing through on I-20, do not pass this place without stopping in. Just had a 5 Star meal in Helfin AL!!!!!! DamnYankees in one of the best resturants I have eaten in this year! Gumbo, Foie Gras, and Cuban Sandwich. Put the Foie Gras on the Sandwich for an upgrade! Done the street from the World Famous Happy Hour Comedy club, if you are looking for something to eat before the show. David Mogil, founder and chef knows his business and will suprise you with the depth and quality of his menu! If you don't go there, your stupid. Ask for Ayla, she is pretty cool as well. read more

Visited this past Saturday night after traveling from Atlanta to a festival in this area of Alabama. I would first like to say that our server was FANTASTIC. I wish I could remember his name, he was a young blonde gentleman who knew how to SELL! He had many great suggestions for both food and drinks, and his personality was vibrant and cheerful. The food itself was absolutely delicious!! Each one of us inhaled everything on our plates. At one point, the owner came by and sat with us and we all spoke for a good bit. You never know what you're going to get service wise. The price tends to vary based on whoever is working that day. They charge extra if you use a credit or debit card too. Despite his awful reputation, Dave has wonderful food. The deep fried filet with gravy and rosemary potatoes is probably one of the best dishes I've had in my life. It's delicious and genius. It's really a southern comfort food and should be on a list of things to eat in Alabama (alongside Classic on Noble's shrimp & grits). I work nearby and the lunch servers aren't the greatest. It takes a while, prices aren't consistent, and they're not always friendly. It may be a different story for dinner -- which I'm not familiar with there. There is always good that goes with bad, and this establishment is no exception to that rule. I do think you need to try the food though!! read more

Damn Yankees... Couldn't resist since we just flew in from Philly heading to Tuscaloosa... Easy to grab just off highway 20. Great food!! Crazy good fresh oysters! Pork sliders were just right with homemade fries! The pasta was a huge serving considering this was a lunch break for us. Bar was well stocked as well. Service was friendly! I liked my meal and the service, but this is a casual establishment. My fried oysters were cooked to perfection. The price was not inexpensive ($17, I think), so if you expect a lot of atmosphere for this price, this is not the place for you. But I liked the food and the service, and I will go back. Sandwiches were more moderately priced, seafood was more expensive, but I believe they are serving a high quality seafood. This establishment is right on I20, so this is a good stop for a traveler, and much better than anything we have tried in Oxford. read more
