I gave Dancing Mule Coffee three stars in the most positively neutral way possible. It's not because I had a total "meh." experience here - it was just pleasantly ordinary, hence the "A-OK" motion. Consider this review a shrug and polite nod of approval. I came in here last week to hunker down on a few hours of work, and subsequently ordered a large iced coffee and a banana bran muffin to keep me full and occupied. While the coffee was pretty light and mild tasting (not bitter, ashy or sour, but not especially flavorful either), the muffin was actually fantastic, if not a little dense. But honestly, if I ever have a hankering for a muffin and coffee combo (which I do often), I'd go to Mudhouse every time. Also, while I liked that the Dancing Mule had sammies and wraps available in their cooler, I thought the prices were a little steep considering I could whip up that stuff at home. That being said, the barista/manager/cashier who rang me up and made my drink was really pretty talkative despite maintaining an intimidatingly stoic expression the whole time. Clearly this is a favorite of a lot of south siders / post-school-day high schoolers, and the aesthetic's contemporary Western feel is both refreshing and relaxing. But since I live near downtown, I don't see Dancing Mule becoming my coffee haunt of choice. Still, not a bad stop for a pick-me-up or a snack. read more

Pretty good mocha. The cinnamon rolls are AMAZING!!! Only place open on Sunday mornings if you want to meet up early at somewhere else but Starbucks. Coffee isn't bad. They serve a local coffee, Delanos. read more

Good quality drinks and pastries. It wasn't busy and our drinks took awhile but only one girl was making them. They know their drinks well so when I said I'm not a coffee drinker they had lots of suggestions and listened to me. Lots of various size seating and free wifi. Clean environment. Friendly staff. Always very friendly staff. Smaller with limited seating, but arranged well for the space.

The staff was reasonably polite, but the coffee was very acidic. I got the turtle over ice. I definitely prefer the deeper roast of Starbucks and while I think the prices were not unusual, it was too expensive for something that tastes like it was brewed from a Folgers can hours earlier. I don't think I'll be stopping by again, but it was much quicker than Starbucks. read more

If you are an espresso fan (1-2 shots in a demitasse cup) Dancing Mule is a fun place. They have 2 choices of espresso that you can choose from. Their standard coffee is Gizmo and it is for milk based drinks and the second choice is for straight espresso. The second choice changes every month or so, so you can try different kinds of flavor profiles throughout the year. My favorite that they had so far was the Flying Monkey (top notch) and the new Panama espresso (very good but not many coffees meet the standards of Flying Monkey). read more

This locally owned coffee shop always impresses me with their attention to detail. Coffee culture is well served with traditional drinks of high quality (Randy always has the espresso dialed in). Yet when I don't want my coffee to taste like coffee, a PB Fandango Frappe does the trick. And they somehow seem to hire the best and brightest baristas, a nice change of pace in this day of deteriorating customer service. Overall, a great experience! read more

The dancing mule has wonderful coffee. It's some of the best. I had an Americano, and it was strong but not bitter. And the coffee was incredibly smooth. My friend and I went on a Monday morning, around 8:00am. The Dancing Mule, which is pretty small, was a little busy. The atmosphere was very cute and clean. The signs were well-drawn, and the morning light coming in was refreshing. There was an older man reading in a wooden rocking chair, enjoying the morning sun. The only thing was I felt a little uncomfortable with how quite it was. Make sure to bring a book or newspaper if you go! I was too shy to bring out my camera to take photos hahaha. And I think their target customer, at least for the morning, is a little older than myself. But their coffee is great! I'll definitely return :) read more

I tell all my friends that going to the Dancing Mule is a bit like going to the "bar" on the TV program "Cheers." Everybody knows your name. Very friendly! What a terrific staff! I have tried many of the various drinks from the menu and have not been disappointed. The pastries, scones, muffins, cookies, and sandwiches are all delicious. I love this local business! Fair trade coffee at affordable prices, some of the flavors created are from syrups made in-house. They are always coming up with new flavor combinations and are quite willing to allow customers to customize drinks. The setting and staff don't come across as pretentious. To say that I "frequent" The Dancing Mule is a bit of an understatement. The owners and the baristas are very friendly and always there to make your day better! Drew, the newest addition to the team, makes the most amazing quiche - and has even come up with a few nut free, vegetarian friendly breakfast items that will please even the most particular of palettes! When a new feature brew is added, the staff is always knowledgeable and they even go so far as to compare it to others that have been my favorites in the past. I go there for business meetings with clients, vendors, new hire training and even interviews. It provides a great atmosphere for business, or even just an afternoon coffee when you have a few minutes to spare. The drive-thru makes it super convenient when you're in a hurry as well. It is MY "cheers" of the coffee world. I give Randy and his staff 5-stars for being stubborn about GREAT coffee! read more

This is a nice, quiet little coffee shop that happens to be near my work, so I started going there a lot. The staff here are always very laid back and friendly. The coffee is tasty, and I especially like their cold brew. When I do get flavored drinks, they've been done well, and I especially like the Bob Marley which is a favorite at my workplace now. I needed comforting and a warm cuppa coffee. This morning I ran out of beans at home and have been running behind all day. Then I visited dancing mule. And I felt instantly better. Like there was hope today would improve. Yes. A good cuppa can do that. And then I wanted a new bag of beans. And the help there was a perfect mix of humility and knowledge. I haven't tried many of the whippy-dippy drinks (mocha, various lattes, etc.), but the dirty Chai was particularly good, especially compared to StarTrash™... Pretty easy to grab a table around 1pm. Dancing Mule has been a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! The drive-thru is convenient especially on a cold day when you don't want to get out of the car more than necessary! They have the most sugar free flavors that I have seen in town and can make most anything "all the way skinny". Two pieces of feedback: 1) sometimes the flavors are a little inconsistent depending on who makes the drink and 2) the pumpkin pie latte is not good, the flavor is just not right. read more

This was my 4th visit since they opened. I have never been blown away by their coffee...not even in my top 5 local coffee shops but I show up when invited to meet friends. Normally i can get over a bad brew... But I felt compelled to write this time because the coffee was just TERRIBLE. A cup of 3 month old Folger's tastes better. And I have Nooo idea what compelled me to buy a bag of their ungrounded house blend. It's about $4 more than a bag of Starbucks for sake of comparison. Pricey stuff. Maybe I thought I could do better brewing their coffee at home? No clue what I was thinking. First thing I noticed is the bag didn't emanate that fresh coffee smell that awakens the senses. When I opened the bag the beans appeared to be very old and dry. Grinding the beans confirmed an old dry coffee. The taste was bitter. No nuttiness... not even a coffee aroma. I like supporting local business in Springfield. I can be very forgiving knowing that processes aren't usually as efficient as a large chain. But what I can't forgive is poor product quality. Seriously, they need to sample new suppliers and put freshness dates on their bags. True coffee lovers would NEVER serve such low quality beans. If Dancing Mule is to survive as a coffee shop they need to rekindle their love for coffee. read more

One of my favorite places for coffee in the SGF. I have been stopping in here for years and plan to continue visiting because I love the service and the coffee. I'm usually just a black coffee kind of gal, but they have some of the best cold brew coffee I have ever had. I recently stopped in and had their vanilla and rosemary cold coffee and it was super delicious. They make the vanilla and rosemary syrup in house so it is a delicious hand-made treat. I think they have my favorite chai latte and cafe au lait in town. If you are hungry when you stop in, I highly recommend the sausage and cheddar scone. It is one of the best things I have eaten at a coffee place and I am always disappointed if I get there and they have run out. The sausage biscuits are pretty good too. At $1.25, the sausage biscuit is cheap and the perfect size for a quick breakfast on your way to work. They have a great business and are worth trying if you have never been! read more

The coffee at Dancing Mule was okay, but not exciting. I ended up not finishing my large coffee because the taste got very acidic at the end. My wife and her friend enjoyed their drinks a lot more. The pastries were pretty good, though they run out of some as the morning progresses. read more

All I can rate is the coffee! I found this place by searching for a nearby drive through coffee joint that was independent. Got a soy mocha, and a 32 oz iced vanilla. I swear I really loved the world that day I drank the 32 oz latte! Maybe don't drink that much coffee unless you are accustomed to it. Anywho nice joint.
