I'm not willing to dedicate a year's worth of weekends visiting and evaluating jewelers just to secure the perfect wedding ring. But I have friends who did exactly that. The fruit of their research? Over the years, I've been treated with other pieces from Daniel's amazing collection - each one of them a reminder of how lucky and loved I am. I would first like to respond to some of the previous reviews for Daniel. The two negative comments you will see are that: He does not let people into his store during non-work hours and his customer service (attitude). It is true that he will not let you into his store during non-work hours but this is because of safety reasons. Go to his website and read his blog. He clearly goes over his policies and thoughts on the matter. On the topic of his attitude I can see that he may rub people the wrong way. He may come across as blunt from time to time but Daniel is honest, hardworking and extremely professional. I went to see Daniel about two months ago for an engagement ring. His work is extremely unique and he has a great passion for it. The thing I like most about Daniel is that he is extremely clear with everything from the moment I walked in the door until the moment I made my purchase weeks later: 'This is what I do, this is my work and this is the product you will receive for a fair, clearly defined price.' He is trying to sell you a product at the end of the day but he was extremely honest and clearly loves what he does. Go to his website, read his blog and if you like what you see go see Daniel. As someone who lives and works in the Cambridge area, I would say (without any hesitation) that Daniel Spirer Jewelers is the best around for jewelry that is a) unique/distinctive, b) customizable, c) good quality, and d)affordable. It's also, I should note, a very pleasant store to be in. I did a lot of exploring in Cambridge, Brighton and Watertown for an engagement ring and mostly found either tacky things or outrageously expensive things. Finally I came across Mr. Spirer's store in a web search (see http://spirerjewelers.com if you're interested). I really liked the look of his work and discovered that the store was, to my surprise, in a spot I've gone by for years and had never noticed. It's a hidden gem, for sure. Mr. Spirer was very good with me in picking out a ring - stone, design, metal, etc. I wanted a special ring that would speak to my fiance personally, and I'm happy to say that that's exactly what I was able to get. I was even able to afford a ring I never would have thought I could - not because Spirer's work is cheap but because he works with you to get the best quality materials for your price range. I ended up with a beautiful custom ring that my fiance and I really cherish. Daniel Spirer has been my favorite jeweler for many years now. I grew up visiting his store with my mother and now I buy my own jewelry there (and still come in with my mother). His jewelry--all made within the store--is miles beyond the mass-market items you see in most stores. Each piece is a work of art, and most have an organic feel, with the metal resembling ripples on water or the twist of a vine. He uses nothing but the finest materials: 18 and 22K gold, Lazare diamonds, and gorgeous gemstones of all types. My favorite are the fancy sapphires, which come in colors like lavender, pink, purple, green and have a brilliant fire. The engagement ring I bought from Spirer features a lovely rose-colored sapphire. Spirer offers fabulous ready-made pieces, including many wedding and engagement rings, but he does a lot of bespoke work as well. He has designed several pieces for me and they are all spectacular. He will take all the time you need to go over the design with you, or to explain the qualities of a certain gem, or why certain requirements for a piece exist. You can bring your own gem or he will provide one for you. And he provides the same level of attention regardless of the size of the piece. This is truly what jewelry is meant to be. After cleaning my apt, I looked down at my men's wedding ring and noticed the diamond had fell out. Luckily I found it in my vacuum cleaner (I know right?!). I live close to Cambridgeside Galleria so I decided to take it Kaye Jewelers. The woman I spoke with was clueless and wanted to charge me $80. I thought that was kind of high, given that I didn't need the diamond replaced, just put back in the ring. I decided to look around the mall but couldn't find any place. I went back to Kaye the next day to speak with someone else, hoping this person would know what they're talking about. This manager was just as clueless as their employee and wanted to charge $100. I work in Porter Square and decided to google jewelry repair near me and that's how I found Daniel Spirer Jewelers. I brought the ring in and he told me it'd be $35. He had the ring ready in 2 days. (Kaye told me it would take about 2 weeks). Daniel even polished my ring and it looks completely brand new. My husband and I bought my engagement and wedding ring from Daniel and I could not love it more. When my husband-to-be and I went to the shop for the engagement ring, he gave it to us in a package that included a bottle of champagne. I don't know if he can always do this, but it was a lovely way to make such a special purchase. I did not like the wedding band he had made to go with the engagement ring, so I described what I wanted and he made it beautifully. He did not let me walk out with it until I was completely happy with it. He guarantees his settings if you come in every 6 months to have your ring cleaned, which is wonderful given the number of friends I have who have lost diamonds from thier rings and have had to pay to replace them. The customer service has been great. And I for one like the dog. If you can be patient for a minute and hold your hand out, it will come to you and let you pet it -it quiets right down. We found Daniel R Spirer online and he was such a pleasure to deal with from the start. We wanted simple rings and he was very helpful, patient and supportive of our decisions. He completed the rings ahead of schedule and when we needed to have adjustments made he still had them finished with plenty of time. We are absolutely thrilled with our wedding bands! They were more beautiful than we expected them to be. His work is high quality, and the white gold on our wedding bands had a dark silvery finish that we had never seen before. In addition, he doesn't use nickel which I believe is both better for the environment and your skin and he only uses reclaimed gold. Daniel Spirer is a wonderful jeweler. I visited his store two weeks ago to look at engagement rings and his stuff is beautiful and unique. Plus he's a great guy - he gave me very straightforward advice and listened to all my concerns. His pricing and policies are very straightforward (and generous - he stands behind his work). He handcrafts all the jewelry in his store, so it's unique and definitely not traditional. I was a little worried about going off the beaten path with something as important as an engagement ring, but his stuff is so damn beautiful I decided to take a chance... I'm happy to say my fiancé LOVES the ring. She can't stop looking at it. And my worry about it being different was completely unfounded, she really appreciates that I took a risk and got something unique. I visited Daniel Spirer Jewelers for wedding rings on the recommendation of two friends who both got beautiful wedding rings there. My experience was similarly excellent. Daniel's work is beautiful and the personal service makes you feel like he cares as much as you do about getting the perfect ring. She Loved It!! I went to Daniel R. Spirier because I wanted to find something for my, at the time, soon to be fiance that was unique and special. A friend of mine actually worked in a jewelry store chain and told me that all of their jewelry was mass produced and I wanted to stay away from that. Dan, that's the owner and the person that helped me find my engagement ring, showed me all kinds of rings that he made himself in the store! I have just arrived home from picking up my custom made necklace. As I sit here, I am in awe of the craftsmanship and creativity! I brought a large piece of tanzanite and an old diamond ring to the shop and asked Daniel to create a one of a kind necklace for me...It is a masterpiece. He was able to set the stones in a way to show off their individual brilliance and at the same time created a free flowing triangular necklace that is attached to a simple chain. Daniel did have me come in to the store prior to setting the stones so that I might critique the piece before it was completed. I thought that his artistic ways in which he incorporated the stones, gold, and gold embellishments was awesome. Daniel is truly an artist and a master in his field. When my husband-to-be took me to Dan Spirer the first time, I was less than enthusiastic about the 21st century stone-floating-in-space design of the engagement ring he'd selected. But Dan picked up on the difference between my taste and my fiance's, noticed the things in the case to which I was drawn, and by adding detail to the original spare design, came up with a ring that was truly mine, reflecting my rather more old-fashioned tastes (not to mention my love for roses). When I was presented with the finished product, I could not believe my eyes -- 12 years later, I am still proud as a peacock to sport this exquisite ring on my finger, it never fails to draw compliments and comments. When it comes to creating custom jewelery, Daniel is head and shoulders above the rest. We recently decided to rework my dated engagement ring. The original being a marquis shape. Using a magazine picture of a pendant and after some discussion, we took Daniel's advice and went with what he recommended. Originally, he was very concerned about using 2 prongs instead of 4 for safety reasons. But, once he got to work he realized that he can pull this off with just 2 prongs. I was delighted by his creation. It surpassed my expectation. I'm not sure many other custom designers could do work at this level. My wife and I bought our wedding rings from Dan and had a great overall experience. He and his wife spent a long time helping us select our rings- the unique designs make them stand out amongst the standard crowd of boring bands. Its exactly what we wanted. Every six months we bring them in for a free cleaning and inspection, which makes us eligible for our warranty against gem loss. It turned out that I could not wear my engagement ring with a standard setting as it interfered with me taking gloves on and off. I am someone who did not wear jewelry. When I got married I wanted a really special, unique ring, but unfortunately we could not afford one, so I got something out of a catalog. On our 10th anniversary My husband took me to Mr. Spirer's shop and we picked out the ring I have worn ever since. It is the only piece of jewelry I wear, and my finger feels naked without it. When years ago, we looked for something in a band as special as our relationship, we found it at Spirer-Somes. We've never gotten tired of the look of our bands--they're beautiful and we often get compliments on them. Fast forward 16 years later, our fingers/knuckles grew bigger and our rings were snug...we tromped our now 4 kids into Daniel's shop with the hopes of getting the rings resized.
