I ordered an Easter cake and cupcakes from the bakery. Both were extremely dry and not fresh tasting. Terrible! The cake looked pretty but that was it... For the last ten years, I have traveled from Washington DC to Boston for Business and discovered Daniels Bakery during my travels it is perhaps one of the hidden gems of Boston. Over this time I have stopped in the Bakery every time to get a cup of coffee or a fresh squeezed OJ a fresh desert before ordering a variety of cakes cookies and one of my favorites the Boston cream piecupcakes; I return to DC with a dozen cupcakes and enough cookies and cakes for my office. The service always outstanding and they are always willing to help fill my order even at the last moment, the value received is excellent. The shipping of cookies is excellent helps the morale of my office and I know what to expect from the order and the highest standards and delicious delights received every time. Tons of variety, but the quality is just okay. I've tried the cinnamon sugar donut hole, raspberry crumble bar, and M&M cookie. I came here in the morning and I wonder if some of these weren't fresh because they tasted pretty stale. I won't mince any words here, Daniel's customer service is pitiful, a colossal waste of time and a miserable excuse for a 'family run business' in a respectable part of the neighborhood. Allow me to explain. I placed an order for a birthday cake for my daughter a week in advance with specific details and instructions on frosting, color details, filling and design. They agreed and were willing to accommodate me. I paid half of the balance per their request. They give me a song and dance about 'making it happen'. Ball was in their court. Good times. A week flies by and on the day I was scheduled to pick up the cake, a girl from Daniel's call me about a huge blunder they've made. Refusing to offer specifics over the phone, she insisted I discuss it with her in person--an hour before they close and less than 24 hours before my daughter's big day with her friends and family. As it turned out, the Baker ignored my instructions and decided to offer something completely different. Worse, the girl said my original request could not be accommodated or fixed since the Baker has already left work for the day. Naturally, mistakes happen with a business constantly in flux and I certainly understand that customers can be rather unforgiving around here but the galling fact is the same exact problem happened last year! Instead of resolving the issue, she left me with two irrational options: take the hideous cake with its inappropriate theme as is or allow the girl to 'correct it' by scraping off the entire cake and improvise with whatever frosting they had left after a long day. By her own admission, she said she wasn't a Baker and possessed no experience or skill in the trade. "Why are those my only options?", I asked. I requested this order a week in advance. They promised to deliver. I wasn't looking to score a free cake or a deep discount. I just wanted the cake I ordered. Another 15 minutes of WTF goes by, things go from bad to even worse. So I asked for my initial deposit back and her manager's name. Instead of complying, she opted for condescension and even suggested that my complaints would fall on deaf ears. Apparently, they hold a low opinion of "customer service" at Daniel's. I supported this Bakery over the years mostly owed to the residual loyalty I had for Daniel's original owners. However, this is not your father's Daniel's--the one you grew up with. Now I must rely on another Bakery to fulfill what Daniel's failed to do. read more

I called to pre order some pies for Thanksgiving. A woman answered the phone and asked for my name phone number and type of payment before we even concluded what I wanted. I told her what I'd like and she asked medium or large so I asked how many a medium feeds. She said "it's not like that. We don't know how much a medium makes for slices. It depends if a fat person wants a big slice." I said excuse me!? She repeated "if a fat person wants a big slice a medium won't feed too much. You're being too needy with questions. We are busy." Talk about ignorant. Her accent was difficult to understand so I thought perhaps I heard her wrong... NOPE! So I told her nevermind and ended the call. Well she called me back and told me I wasted her time. I've never experienced that in my life. What a psycho. This place gets an F in my book. read more

Stopped in there to browse and I loved the old style bakery counter and the loads of delicious treats! It appears it is a Brazilian family that owns this and they bake bread fresh everyday! Am I missing something here? Has childhood nostalgia corrupted reviewer's taste buds? Is this entire bakery sugar-free and I don't know it? If I grew up in Brighton would my childhood memories overshadow reality? So I went here for the final time yesterday with my girlfriend. I mentioned to her how I had gone here twice when I first moved to brighton, but that I found the cookies tasteless. She was in a mood to make strawberry shortcake and thought it would be fun to "walk to the neighborhood bakery." I warned her that the only cookies I have ever thrown away uneaten in my entire life, came from this bakery, but apparently she had seen too many French movies and wanted something local. We went in. I mentioned "well, surely they can't mess up angel food cake." Not to mention it was the same price as a grocery store cake, but half the size. Maybe they make up for it in high quality ingredients and fine taste, right? We brought it home. I took a bite and in my head thought that saltines have more flavor. She looked at me. I said it was fine. She tested it herself and within one bite it was in the trash can. Needless to say, I was "driving" to Stop & Shop 2 minutes later.... Never again Daniel's Bakery. Unless I develop Diabetes and need sugar-free desserts...... Pros: 2 blocks from my house Items nicely decorated Cons: Their cookies have absolutely no taste. Thumbs down on angel food cake too. What a disappointment!!! We got the chocolate chip canoli, chocolate chip meringue, and an m&m cookie. They all sucked! I have never been so disappointed in baked goods. The canoli was soggy, the meringue was crumbling and the cookie was dry and had a bad flavor! Ugh what a waste of money.....never going back! I was extremely disappointed last week when I ordered a cake here with a photograph on top. When I arrived, the owner told me that their internet was down and she 'thought of calling me'. I only had an hour to get the cake to my party and was extremely angry. I could have gone to another bakery if I had known, but instead had to bring a plain white cake. Hello I order 2 cakes from This place . Both cakes was mess up . The first cake had 2 round holes at the top. It wasn't a smooth surface smh . The second cake wasn't the colors I ask for . The lady didn't want to refund or discount the cakes . The worst thing about it was " the colors was pink " for my son birthday party . I sat there for 2 hours for the baker to fix the cake & it still wasn't want I ask for .The lady was still refusing to refund me . One of my big issues with bakeries/baked goods is the fact that these places seem incapable of divulging ingredients. The pumpkin loaf is actually pumpkin RAISIN. I feel like main ingredients should be mentioned, but Daniel's doesn't seem to share that opinion. I've also had some some less-than-amazing cookies from here. Let's get to the point. Twenty years ago Daniels bakery was awesome...when it was owned by original owner/baker Daniel Handalian. My very first birthday cake was purchased from there and it was amazing with the right amount of golden cake, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream frosting. Fast forward twenty something years later..I wanted to start a tradition with my young son. So my husband and I began ordering their ice cream cakes starting from his first birthday. Things went downhill when Daniel retired and some other woman took over. The cakes, pies, bread and pastries were never the same again. I felt so frustrated because I loved Daniels Bakery. I grew up in that neighborhood and my aunt even worked there briefly. I was a very loyal customer for two decades. But a recent experience left me embittered by the new owner and workers. It was my son's seventh birthday and I went there to order a toy story cake. I spoke with one of the girls and I specifically asked her to make sure that there was extra vanilla ice cream in the cake and that I don't mind paying extra for it. She kept nodding and asking me different questions not referring to the ice cream at all. I seriously wanted to slap her. The reason for my request is that I recently noticed their ice cream tasted more like cream. So I wanted to make sure that the cake was made like it use to be. Well...I paid $100 for a hot mess. When I got there to pick up the cake, they were still working on it, mind you I ordered it two weeks in advance. The decorations were hideous and when the time came to eat the cake, it tasted like cardboard and cream. Damn... And still I continue to visit the place hoping and praying that somehow it would be the same as before. But no, sadly Daniels has lost its appeal. Their yellow cake with whipped cream frosting is amazing, as is their cinnamon raisin bread and coconut bread. Their other fresh breads and rolls are very good, but make sure to ask if it was made that day. After that, quality and flavor take a hit. Their pastries and cookies are basically supermarket quality, and their pies and fruit squares are to be avoided at all costs. the "crust" on the pies and squares is flavorless, thick, dense and chewy. If I had a choice between one of their pies or no pie, I would pick the latter. read more

It seems to be a Brazilian Bakery.but they made Cannoli's the real way which is to pipe in the sweetened ricotta when you order your pastry. I bought 6 cupcakes from Daniel's Bakery for my friend's birthday last week, and they were absolutely delicious. The chocolate frosting was perfectly dense and fudgy, the regular frosting was wonderful and creamy, and the cupcakes themselves were baked perfectly. Wanda, the owner, also was so helpful and accommodating while I was figuring out what to buy. I will absolutely be back again soon! read more

At first glance, Daniel's is the kind of old-fashioned neighborhood bakery that I want to love, but unfortunately can't. It's just too hit-or-miss, tending towards miss. One thing it does have going for it is that it's cheap, hence the two stars. But you get what you pay for, in this case. I've had a few good items, like the cream puffs with whipped cream, but a lot of bad ones too. Recently, I had two small cupcakes- one had fresh cake and tasty frosting, the other had flavorless white frosting on cake that tasted like it was a week old (and I'm a baker, so I'm not exaggerating.) And another item I had was supposed to have a pudding-style filling that was suspiciously gelatinous and tasted like it had been made with sour milk. It was nasty! The cookies are dry and tasteless. The breads are basic but decent if you like things plain, however I'll stick with Iggy's or When Pigs Fly. The service is variable as well. I've been helped quickly; I've also been ignored when I was the only person in the bakery. Personally, Daniel's the kind of bakery that could be great, but I expect it will take a new owner and some updated recipes to get there. read more

I ride past this stop everyday to work, wishing it was open for my convenience for an early morning snack. It rarely is, and I always sigh, wanting a donut or a danish. I finally went, in an effort to avoid cooking and buy some cookies for a party. I have never went back on that decisions- except for the cookies. The danishes and bread are a little piece of heaven with it's flaky yet moist dough. I haven't had one that good in a few years. Go, but avoids the cheap cookies, the recipe isn't perfected. I am boycotting Daniels Bakery in Brighton! The bakery charged me TWICE and gave me the WRONG ORDER! They were out of line, unprofessional and did not want to be held accountable for their MISTAKE when it was apparent they did not follow directions! To make matters worse I e-mailed them as well as speak to someone about the cake description in which they FAILED to create and I was left with a cake I did not want. I ended up HANGING the phone up after she got personal and YELLS "YOU COME HERE PREGNANT GOD BLESS YOU BABY, etc.", what did that have to do with their mistake and why was I transferred to the baker and not the manager - "OH ya" because he is all of the sudden out for a few months; I'm glad I was on the phone with them and not there in person because I would have gotten no where and would have called the police! NEVER EVER AGAIN will I ever order from them AGAIN which is to bad because I always ordered from them! I should have known something was not right when I walked into a COLD bakery when it was cold outside meaning they can't afford HEAT! I thought I heard they were bought out maybe this is where they failed I should have stuck with Party Favors who has not failed me yet however they were unable to take my order at the time, two weeks notice do to the holidays in which I can understand at least they were honest! read more

We always try to get our cakes from here. The service is average for a mom and pop bakery sometimes extremely nice, but sometimes rude enough to want to cancel your order. GREAT decorator and delicous cakes especially the ones with whip cream. Its not too sweet but full of flavor. I only wish they would list their prices the same size cake price is always different +/- $8. But overall would order again!!! Breads and baked items are good. Give them try. read more

Soo good! I ordered a birthday cake here and it was fantastic. I went into the bakery a week before I needed the cake - with the holidays approaching I figured they might need more time for custom orders. The staff is very friendly and helped me with all the fixings for the cake. One of my few complaints is that the smallest cake they make feeds 15 people. I was having a small family gathering of 7 people so we had A LOT left over. The best part is the price - $19 for a custom freshly made cake! I would pay that at Stop and Shop and get something not nearly as fresh. I picked up the cake a week later (and the day after a major snowstorm) with no problems whatsoever. Even snow does not stop these wonderful bakers from making delicious cakes and cookies! read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE/ EXPERIENCE EVER. WOULD GIVE IT 0 STARS if I could. This cake did not hold up well at all, very dry although they stated it was fresh, fell over as soon as I cut into it so most of the cake went in the trash because people did not want to eat a glop of cake instead of a slice of cake. As for the customer service part, most horrible service i have ever experienced, they discriminate against people of color although they themselves are minorities (WEIRD). I can hear them talking about me in the background when I called to express my concern saying " we know those kind of people" and I never once asked for money back except when there was a $25 overcharge I saw on my receipt which I wish I had noticed when I paid for the cake. I have been to party favors, icing on the cake, donna's bakery, montillios, konditor meister, etc, and have never complained about my cake/orders/pricing because I know and I enjoy a good slice of cake and I am 100% okay with paying for quality. But please save your money and go to stop and shop or shaws (Or try one of the other places I mentioned if you are okay with spending a little more) because you will definitely get a better cake, and you won't be stereotyped or categorized, as you will be at Daniels Bakery in Brighton. I thought I would give this place a try because it was a last minute party and once upon a time when I was a child it was good but please stay away from this place especially if you are "one of those people" as they call us. Daniels is my family's go to place for birthday cakes. Their cakes with strawberries and whip cream are the best.

Daniel's has the best sourdough round I've ever eaten. I buy one at least once a week and the loaf never makes it through the night. Their cinnamon raisin bread is equally unbelievable, especially toasted with butter. Their cakes are great as well, but I don't buy those as often. If I could give this place ZERO stars I would. Not only did I pre-order my cake 2 weeks in advance, come today (VALENTINES DAY) I got the wrong cake. Not only did I print out a copy of what the cake should have looked like (It was suppose to be a chocolate covered strawberries on top with pretty decoration) but I called a few days before to confirm . When I got there I was given a ugly white and purple cake with a big purple bow. Once they realized they made the wrong cake, they did not trying to address the issue, they just started helping other customers not paying me any attention when CLEARLY i was very upset that I paid almost $50 for a 6 people cake and was given the wrong one. She wanted to convince me to just take the cake they made, which may I point out it was even an ice cream cake. The whole order was wrong. Then she wanted to tell me that she couldn't issue me a refund because the manager was in the hospital. . . I was NOT going to take the WRONG cake , and i WAS going to get my money back. After arguing back in forth she finally gave me my money back. No apologies about their mistakes.. NOTHING. Just simply ignored me and when on to the next customer. This is the LAST time I go there. Ah yes, Daniel's. The bakery of my childhood, and coming back to it, it always brings me back to those good times of tamagotchi pets, wheelies, and Pokemon cards. All those are now gone sadly, but Daniel's lives on. Granted the owners are new, but I'm glad the mainstays of French bread loaves, Gingerbread cookies, and Lemon Meringue pies are still as good as ever. Those are the only three things I get, and man are they nice (though the cakes have been a birthday tradition for me since I could eat solid foods). The prices are still ridiculously low ($2 for a gingerbread man, and you can pick who that guy is on the cookie -- Elmo is my favorite). Really wish they brought back the make-your-own-cookie days, but I'm not complaining. Daniel's will always be my go-to bakery, and the Brighton staple that it has become over the years. read more

Wandered in here one day with my friend and enjoyed looking at the huge variety of baked goods on display. I love that they have a discount rack with day-old goods. I found there an excellent spinach and cheese croissant which was much better than the cheese danish I bought from the counter--much too sweet for my liking. We took the only two seats in the bakery at the booth, but felt uncomfortable being the only ones there. I would feel more relaxed if they had multiple booths or cafe tables set up indoors--they certainly have the space for it. read more
