I have been to both this location and their former location in Montclair and found the service and selection to be very good at both. I have purchased four hats between the two locations with them varying from lighter summer style hats to more expensive, felt hats meant for cooler weather and have never had an issue with quality. Pricing was inline with what I have paid elsewhere for similar style and quality hats. With a limited amount of establishments in New Jersey to find a variety stylish hats Dan's Hats stands out even more. read more

I had heard about this store from a friend of mine who shares my love of hats. Until today the only stores I would recommend for someone living in NJ is JJ's Hat center in NYC, or Hats in the Belfry in Philadelphia. The location isn't difficult to get to, but parking may be a problem because it is in the middle of downtown Newark. I was able to find a spot after circling a couple of blocks (Noon on a Friday) When I went inside, I met Dan, one of the owners of the store. I told him I was looking for a hat appropriate for business attire that I could wear in the rain with a black trench coat. I like the pinched teardrop shaped fedora style but I was willing to stay open minded. A quick glance at my head and he guessed my head size (7-5/8). He brought out a couple of options which matched the image I had in my mind. He also suggested some alternatives which were very nice, just not what I was looking for today. I ended up buying an excellent felt fedora; which he added a weather protective coating onto for no additional cost. The prices of the hats I looked at were somewhere between Hats in the Belfry and JJ's prices ($70-$200) which is what I expected to pay. I would absolutely visit this store again and I would recommend it to friends who are in the market for upscale head coverings. read more

I was having dinner with a friend at the Landmarc at Time Warner in Manhattan, and I noticed a young gentleman, younger than I, and I admired his Longshoremen's hat. He suggested that I visit " Danny's Hats & Caps" in Newark, NJ. It took me a while, but I finally, made it. I left with at least one hat, every time I visited. I have not been able to see him for a couple of years, and since my son has been stealing my caps, now claiming, I am wearing "his caps" all I can say is, "Danny, I will visit you soon." There is a secret to obtaining what you want, which Dan advised me of; however, you have to graduate "Secret Agent" school to find that out. I'm a Hat guy. I like my baseball hats, but I also like to mix it up and wear something more fashionable and stylish depending on my plans. My friend, a fellow Hat guy, took me to Dan's Shop. I didn't even get in the store and Dan was hanging outside and greeted us right there. were outside for 10 minutes of chatting before we got inside to shop. Cool! We went inside and were greeted by the rest of the staff, all very friendly! After trying numerous hats from a wide variety of choices and suggestions I decided on 3 seperate hats. We were there for about an hour, shopping and talking. No rush, No hassles. It was well worth the experience and visit. I will certanly be going back when I'm in the market for a new hat. I found this gem of a store while visiting Newark. I collect hats and have more than 25. They have caps and hats from a number of hat makers including one of my favorites, Mayser. Of note is that they have more Stitch hats than I've seen in one place! The Stitch line was made by Makins, which unfortunately has gone out of business. That means, though, that the edgy Stitch hats are even more unique. The staff was friendly and very helpful with suggestions and truthful comments and encouraged me to think outside the box. They are honest and saved me $35.00 for reblocking a crushable hat explaining that reblocking would take away from its character. read more

The shop is in Newark #1 which nobody in Jersey wants to come really. I found this spot online because I was searching for a straw boater. I saw on their site they had the one I was looking for. to bypass going into the city I came up here to have a lack luster greeting from the staff. The older women was very pleasant but the other 2 gentleman working seemed bothered. Being thst I was ready to spend $178 on a hat you would think they would provide prompt service. I looked on their site and they said they had 12 boaters in stock. He goes in the back and bring one hat out didn't even ask my size just brought one hat out I felt like he thought I was window shipping and just wanted to see the hat not buy it. Normally when you buy a pair of shoes they bring them out in the box right? I told him this wasn't my size and I needed a 62. He said abruptly "This is all I have" as far as the general selection in the store it's all old ass Kangol caps really, defiantly not JJ Hat Center. None the less I plan to take my money to JJ Hat Center because this was a waste of time. The older lady was very nice though. read more

I was really impressed with this place! I had a great experience and learned a lot about the proper hat care and storage of my hats. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The store was separated into two sections. The first section I walked into was the cap side. It was filled with newsboy, ivy and drivers caps by so many of the best company's like Borsalino, wigens, baileys and Kangol just to name a few. I picked out 2 caps a wigens and a Borsalino. I then headed next door to the hat section. I was in heaven!!! They must have had about 300 different styles of hats on display. So many styles and colors I was getting confused. Dan jr. Helped me get focused on the purpose and type of use I needed the hat for. I decided on a Borsalino panama for my upcoming vacation and he worked a great deal on a Stetson fedora for the up coming fall season. I'm a little confused by Stanley W. the previous reviewer because I have purchased hats from JJ hat center in the past but the selection and staff was not as helpful and freindly as Dans Hats. Dans also had a larger selection of Hats and Caps. I loved that it was 3 generations of the family all working together in the family business. It was a real Mom and Pop business. And Stanley W. Newark is a great city that has really rebounded with new business and people. I spent a total $625.00 in a great city with a Great Hat store. read more
