The coffee-oreo-fudge ice cream may be the best ice cream I have ever had in my life. I think I can safely say that they are top notch for variety and flavor. So why a ranking of only two? One of my daughters who is allergic to nuts, ordered a "Chocolate Thunder" which is described as having "Chocolate based with cake crunchies, cookie fudge, and dark chocolate chunks." My kiddo (an adult really) begins to have a nut allergy reaction. They come on very slow for her, and thankfully, we have never needed to use the epi pen. She goes to the counter to ask them whether Chocolate Thunder has nuts and explains that she is having a reaction. She is told, "Well, there is always a chance of cross contamination." Incredibly, she has never been affected at places like Cold Stone or Stewarts which also serve ice cream with nuts. They rinse their scoopers. Here, there was a complete disregard - an indifference really for what was happening. If I were the manager, I would have offered her another ice cream and made sure that the ice cream scoop was rinsed. We did not want to make a scene. It was father's day and so many families were there enjoying the moment. So we promised that we would go to Stewarts thereafter so she could enjoy a scoop of something - which we did. AND THEN my younger daughter runs up to me to share that there was hair in her ice cream cup. I am sure that this does not happen all of the time. Hair happens, I suppose. The nut allergy response, was just bad. This is the reason for the rating of 2.

It's limited to about a dozen flavors between hard and soft. The hard ice cream flavors (we got hard ice cream this time) were more traditional, the soft ice cream flavors were more creative and interesting. Prices were about the same for similar sizes, though, but $4 and change for a small dish seemed slightly above average compared to the same amount elsewhere. Then again, there's nothing else that close to this place with whom to be competitive. Spoons aren't available here unless you order ice cream. The spoons are plastic, looking more like they're designed for iced tea or milkshakes, with long, slender, flimsy handles, and only teaspoon-sized for scooping. That's fine for a shake or soft ice cream, but they were a bit too flimsy for digging into hard ice cream. The flavors could have been a little stronger too, though the stuff in the special flavors (e.g., the Moose Tracks), made up for it. This is a fine place to go if you're looking for a meal with ice cream, or mini-golf plus food or drink. Then again, there's nothing else like it for many miles in any direction.

The grounds were well maintained, and there was shade near each hole. I liked that each hole was challenging, and many holes had moving obstacles. The course is creative and none of the holes are banked the same. It's great for younger children also, because it is not too complex. Not sure if the lights automatically turn off at 8:55 pm, but it would be useful to have them on until your golfers complete the course. We had to use our flashlights for hole 17 and 18. Loved the decor and enjoyed the Saratogian history. If you're visiting, this is a great way to have a crash course in local history. There is an overlook to the waterfall near hole 8/9 so if you need a break before the back 9, you've got it! Some of the pole stands could use some assistance with cleaning (have some kind of moss on some of them, specifically hole 7 stand).

Clearly the main purpose of this establishment is now the food section which looked well maintained on the surface. The best thing I can say about the mini golf is that we had brand new shiny balls and the surrounding grounds were well maintained. However, the artificial turf on the "fairways" was in pretty bad condition with multiple bare spots around the course as well as one split section that is raised on both edges and effectively blocks the ball. We also noticed that one of the water features has an unsightly horizontal water leak/spray. The design is also faulty where numerous holes have a slope away from the hole and even if you get very close, the ball is likely to roll far away. Finally, the rebound walls are often too low which allows easy jumps of the fairways. At one point my ball went off green's side where there was a bad slope and no retaining wall. I went to the window to see how they wanted me to handle it and nobody was around. The players ahead of us had left their clubs and balls and pencil on the counter. When we left several minutes later, we did the same. Why is there no attendant? It seems to me that two things have happened. The business got their permit from the town by proposing mini golf. Once that was in they snuck in the food permit and the food became the major profit center and the mini golf is now neglected as an inconsequential profit center but part of the town permitting process. Since this property is in or very near the airport's crash zone, mini golf was probably permitted as a low density activity whereas a restaurant would not have been. Therefore, the restaurant was added later once the business was established for another purpose. I'm only guessing but I'd wager I'm quite accurate.

Bland and not well play-tested long-putt-only style course on nicely-kept up grounds with good…read moremaintenance. It's the kind of course that, after having toured 13 other courses in the region this summer, we would like to give props to for the effort of having a nice course but which made us yawn for the most part. Pricing $7 for adults, $6 for kids, and "printed coupons only", as the sign in the window says, so you can forget the smartphone revolution, my fellow Yelpers. This is a medium-long putt course with a ton of purple geraniums, nice-looking granite boulders, decorative rocks, and watercourses and a waterfall in the middle. These parts are spiffy, and despite the piped-in-overloud music, add to the experience. Unfortunately the water isn't really used as play hazard much - there are three holes where it's possible to hit it into the water, but the rough keeps the ball out on one and sort of does on another, and on the third you'd have to be the worst golfer ever to hit it into the water right off the tee. The boulders and bricks tend to make the balls bounce hard, and the course plays fast in part due to worn turf and lots of uphill / downhill holes, so "skill" shots are very randomized. Smaller kids will not do well on this course because of the requirement to hit hard, and even we ran up against the per hole stroke limit a number of times (not to boast, but we've become very seasoned mini golfers from all this gadding about.) There are some tells as to how this was not designed for playability. There are "drain zones", spots where balls tend to end up no matter where they're hit, on many of the holes. On very few of the holes is there a meaningful choice to play the hole two or more different ways -- when this is done properly it makes a good course into a great one, and when it's done poorly, as here, it just makes the holes kind of mechanical. There were a few holes we liked OK - #17, a nice water hole in a sort of teardrop pattern with a kickout into a pond, #11, and #14, the hole in front of the waterfall. #2 features a bed of flowers as a sort of sand trap, which was nifty, but they're easily avoidable. It's tempting to downgrade this to two stars out of sheer boredom and lack of respect for the game, but for a casual game you can do worse. I'd call this more of a dating-course than one for kids or others who want a "serious" / fun game - it has ambiance and the randomization will probably mean your scores will end up close no matter who the better player is.

This is already my fourth visit here this season, and I've been coming to Control Tower Ice Cream for years. It never disappoints. They have a huge variety of both soft serve and hard ice cream flavors, along with a ton of sundae options. Portion sizes are very generous too, both for sundaes and cones. Today I had the Chocolate Overload Sundae with Moose Tracks ice cream. It came with delicious hot fudge, little peanut butter cup pieces in the ice cream, Oreo crumbles, whipped cream, sprinkles, a cherry, and even a fun size Hershey bar on top. So good. While I was there the people in line in front of me got slushes that looked very much like bomb pop flavors. I bet there's awesome! Almost changed my choice but I stuck with my original sundae choice. I've also had their brownie sundae in the past, and that was excellent too. Trust me when I say a regular size is already pretty large. The large is enormous. This is probably my favorite ice cream place in the area, with Kurver Kreme right behind it. Another thing I really like is how quickly they move people through. Even when there's a line, I've never had to wait very long to order or get my ice cream. They also have go-karts and batting cages, which makes it a fun place overall. The go-karts aren't open until May 16th, but it's nice having those attractions there. 5 stars.
