I went in by myself on a Thursday evening, as I was in Lubbock (and at TTU) for work meetings, and sat at the bar for a beer and dinner. Three employees -- servers and bartenders -- were working the place, as it was summer and school wasn't yet in session, so while most tables were filled, the bar had empty seats and a couple of tables were still empty. TEN MINUTES I sat at the bar before I was even acknowledged, and that was because the two guys next to me, who'd been there at least that long themselves, finally asked for menus, and so I said, "I'd like one, too." The guy got me a menu and I decided on what to order. Set the menu down, and another 5+ minutes went by while the servers dealt with other tables and even other customers at the bar. Now, we are 15+ minutes in, and finally the guy who got me the menu asked if I wanted something to drink. I ordered a beer, where he could have TURNED AROUND to enter it in the register and pour it from the tap, but he went to another table and I didn't see him again for another 5 or so minutes. At that point, I'd had enough, and I left. I would have enjoyed trying the pizza and enjoying a beer there. The place had a cool vibe and the food looked and smelled good, from what I could see from neighbors. But the dismissive attitude of the staff who must actually have looked THROUGH me (I was at the very center of the bar and I'm pretty sure I'm not transparent) and having been ignored for about 20 minutes was enough. Went down the road to Flippers Tavern and had a wonderful experience there! Sorry, but if you can't even acknowledge your customers when you're busy but not slammed, you don't deserve my business. Maybe it's because I'm an Old Dude and not a young hipster or college student, but it was disappointing and frustrating. Bottom line: skip this place, especially if you're over 35 or so.

Capital wins out if you like your crust a little doughy. There is this intense softness to their pizza that it is almost like tasting a cloud. It is legit. Some personal favorites of mine are their Hot Honey pizza, but this last time I ordered a Classic Margherita, and I loved it. It is really like no other pizza place I have been to, and I always find enjoyment in their immensely doughy crusts. It used to be only order over the phone, but it is nice to order online using Slice now because you do not have to preplan and prepare for a phone call. You just pick your pizzas and order. It is great. I enjoy dining in as well. The place feels pretty small, but there is a big overflow room in the back on busy nights. They have a full bar, which is pretty cool for keeping the party going. You do have to pay a little more than at your typical pizzeria, but I think the tradeoff is worth it. It was a place I went when I cared less about convenience and using a coupon for some chain pizza and instead wanted something absolutely delicious. Sadly, it's not that anymore. The salad out front was decent enough, albeit pretty basic and definitely nothing special. The calzone was watery. Yes, watery. I don't even know how or why, but there was an excessive amount of watery liquid coming out of it. The pepperoni pizza was decent enough, but definitely no better than you're going to get from a chain, or (I can't believe I'm saying this) frozen. The sauce was particularly off-putting and gave me a different kind of nostalgia than I thought I would get eating here. It reminded me of eating Chef Boyardee vlin microwavable bowls as a kid. I was told that after taking the leftovers home and trying them the next day, they were even worse reheated. I didn't have that misfortune myself as I was done with it after the meal. The service was adequately good, but there was no crowd like I would have expected, and it's easy to see why. I'm fully aware of the reasons things may have gone a different direction (specifically downhill) at One Guy's and that there are now more options in town. I just hoped that this location still had some of that pizazz that made it special. Sadly, I was disappointed.

Dario's isn't just one of the best pizza places in Lubbock -- it's one of those locally owned businesses that reminds you why you should support local. The food is absolutely outstanding. The pizza is fresh, the crust is fantastic, the ingredients are quality, and you can tell there's real care put into what comes out of that kitchen. But what really separates Dario's from everyone else is Dario himself. He genuinely cares about his customers, takes pride in what he serves, and makes you feel like he actually appreciates you choosing to walk through his door. There are plenty of places where you can buy a pizza. There aren't nearly as many where the owner takes this much pride in his food, his business, and the people he serves. If you live in Lubbock and haven't tried Dario's yet, you're missing out. Skip the chains and go support a local guy who's doing it right. Great food, great service, and an owner who deserves every bit of the success he's earned. Dario's has my vote for some of the best pizza in Lubbock. 10/10 -- absolutely recommend. read more

But I'm not here to discuss their excellent pizza, the generous slices, or the largest pie in the region. I'm here to gush about their soda. I only have one vice in life: Dr Pepper. I visit near-daily to sit and watch old David Letterman clips on my phone, and nothing pairs as well with talk-show clips from the 1980s quite like an ice-cold Dr Pepper. I don't know what their trick is, but it's the perfect balance of syrup & carbonation. What's more is the availability of that delightful ice all enthusiasts crave: small & airy, which allows each cube to harbor your soda of choice within it's cracks for a flavor-filled burst with every satisfying crunch. Staff is invariably friendly and attentive, and seem to have no qualms about a daily dip into Letterman clips. Ownership is likewise friendly & kind, and offer up a warm greeting any time we cross paths. There's always a clean table available (sanitized with Fabuloso® if I'm guessing correctly), there are a couple of arcade machines (play Pac-Man while you wait!), and much of the restaurant is tastefully decorated with Super Mario memorabilia. If you're anything like me, and h*ck, who isn't, you'll love catching up with your favorite David Letterman clips and enjoying a slice of pepperoni while sipping an otherworldly example of Dr Pepper. It is my view that Georgio's merits all five stars, a blue ribbon, numerous gold medals and a Nobel peace prize.
