I've been to Dark Heart about a half a dozen times. Their drip coffee is consistently very good and the cortados excellent. They offer sparkling water with their cortados, as some cafes do, which is a pretty cool touch. Sometimes they offer the choice of two different roasts for their espresso drinks, which I've never seen before anywhere else, ever. Stop reading here if that's all you need to know. Today. I order a Smokey Mocha (they also have a regular Mocha on the menu). Side note. It's really hard to screw up a mocha. At its most basic it's hot chocolate with shots of espresso. Even with bad or mediocre espresso shots there's usually enough milk and chocolate to cover it up. On the flipside, it's really hard to make a mocha that stands out from the crowd. (Spoiler-Dark Heart surpasses all that mocha mediocrity). Rewind. The first time I went to Dark Heart a couple years ago, a menu item caught my attention. The Smokey Mocha. My friend and I asked what it was. The barista at the register smiled and gave us her sales pitch. Something she'd obviously done many times and still didn't seem to mind doing. My friend and I were both sold as we each ordered one. After I was done with my Smokey Mocha, I wanted to order another. Unfortunately, we were coffee cafe hopping and had four more stops. When I got home, I started gushing about my Smokey Mocha to the SO and anyone else who would listen. Fast forward back to today. I order the 8-ounce Smokey Mocha for here. My drink has a nice heart design with a generous amount of black lava sea salt sprinkled on top. I smell notes of cocoa, but I can't tell if it's from the espresso (Relentless blend) or the cocoa powder. With every sip I take, I taste warm sweet (from cane sugar and maple syrup) mocha that ends with a touch of salt. The smoked paprika is an afterthought. I savor my drink, but I reach the bottom of my mug much too quickly. I swirl the mug to get the last dregs of salt and cocoa powder (single origin cocoa powder from the Philippines according to the barista). As I drive away, I can taste the salt on my llips, and I still feel the astringency of the cocoa powder in my mouth. This is no ordinary mocha drink. The Dark Heart Smokey Mocha has no equal. read more

Excellent shop. It takes a lot for me to give 5 stars to any coffeehouse, but Dark Heart has the best equipment, excellent beans, very good baristas and a cool ambiance. I was visiting a friend from out of town and we popped in here for a quick matcha while killing time before our breakfast reservation - and the matchas were delish! My friend also got a macaroon which she loved. This place was BUMPING and there was a smidge of a line so I'd expect a tid bit of a wait on weekends. Definitely come a bit early if you want to snag seating on their patio (esp if the weather is nice out). They had a lot of cute indoor and outdoor seating areas and lots of good food options as well. Awesome coffee spot! I went there on a Sunday morning and it was packed. Line took a while but I thought it was worth the wait. Iced latte was very good. There's limited seating indoors as well as on the patio. Maybe not the best place to just grab a coffee if you're in a hurry, they did have a sign about an additional charge for to-go items if you don't bring a reusable cup. I have been eyeballing this place for quite a while but just hadn't made it in until yesterday. And I'm sad that I waited so long. I thought this establishment was a lot smaller than it actually is and I regret not taking pictures like I normally do. There is a main area that has high top seating at the window and a couple tables, there is a small outdoor patio with several tables and chairs, as well as some umbrellas. There is also a dining style room that people can co-work in to the right of the main seating area. The ambience definitely gives trendy hipster vibes, while being very clean and unique. Normally, I do a bathroom check, but as I was here, meeting a friend, I did not do so, and will definitely pay attention next time. As for their drinks, they offer a variety of coffee drinks, as well as non-coffee drinks. They also have some food items both sweet and salty. They offer dairy free, vegan and I think gluten free alternatives for both food and drink. While I don't remember the exact prices of things, they were reasonable for the quality. I ended up getting an iced earl rose latte, and in all of my reviews of the coffee shops that I've been to around the world, I think that this has to be my favorite one. I ended up ordering two of them, one when I arrived, and one when I left because I wanted to take it home. I definitely will be back and I urge anybody who's looking for a unique spot to give this place a try. Stop here for coffee and work then head across the alley to Mead Krieger for a nice glass of mead in the evening and you got yourself a pretty good day. read more

There are so many things to love about Dark Heart, it will be difficult to keep this brief. The DH Coffee Menu is the most epicurean coffee shop menu I have ever seen. Here's my favorite drink, the spectacular Smokey Mocha Latte verbatim from their menu... "Our Smokey Mocha is made from single origin Askinosie cocoa hand whisked with pure maple syrup, a dash of smoked paprika, and espresso then integrated into silky latte style milk and garnished with black sea salt! Like a salted 70% maple chocolate bar in a cup!" I drive 40 minutes round-trip, 2 times a week to get this drink, and I'd drive more if I had to. It's that good! My partner in love, life & crime, gets the Earl Rose Latte which is a fragrant combination of loose leaf earl grey tea, hibiscus simple syrup, and rose water with silky smooth latte style milk and garnished with fine hibiscus. It's delicious! There are a nice variety of these delectably mind-shattering drinks on the standard menu, plus a selection of seasonal drinks right on the metal post to the left of the digital register as you come up to order. They're sometimes easy to miss, so give them a glance before looking up at the big menu board. So the drinks are phenomenal... what about the vibe??? We know that many coffee shops are all about the space, the people, the baristas, etc., and maybe it's no surprise, but Dark Heart is basically the coolest, bad-ass little coffee shop in the entire Centennial state. Every detail of its interior is custom designed, hand-cut & bent metals abound & chic industrial surfacing are everywhere. Black & grey is the general design theme, only to be contrasted by the incredibly warm, friendly staff & owners. Food offerings are a bit limited to case selections, but I've got my super tasty favorites including: the breakfast burritos and mini quiches. I love Dark Heart. It has some of the sophistication of Blue Bottle and other establishments in the Bay area. The pastries are good and well presented (not wrapped in saran wrap on a plastic plate, as is often done out here in Colorado). They have a choice of single origin coffee, and they serve seltzer water with espressos. The music is good. Dark Heart is arguably the best coffee shop in Loveland, and at the level of some of the better places in Fort Collins. A little on the expensive side, but I guess every place is these days. read more

It is a wonderful space with delicious coffee My only complaint is the onesie "customer" who are entitled to take an entire table (there are not many) get a cup of coffee, pull out their laptop and spend literally hours using free coffeehouse real estate and wifi to work. The public library is a mere block away. Maybe a sign hinting at the proximity of the public library is in order? Finished your coffee? AJ and Justin really care about the quality of coffee and the baristas put that into the consistency of the drinks they make. This coffee bar is a great place to spend some time by yourself or with company. I visited late morning on a Friday of a holiday weekend, and it was busy, but I still found seating outside. I only waited in line for a few minutes behind a couple of guests. The individual that took my order was friendly, and also able to answer my question about the in-house nut milk. Dark Heart makes their own cashew milk, with water, cashews, dates, and salt. Being a warmer day, I went with a cold, Grapefruit Ginger kombucha, which I enjoyed outside in the patio area. There was a variety of shaded and sunny seating available. I went on my own this time, but was happy to see that I could bring a "well-behaved, leashed dog" to the patio area in the future! To those that are sensitive to loud noises, I would recommend the outside area when weather permits as the music inside was a bit loud. Also, since the coffee bar isn't directly downtown, the traffic noise was okay for the most part, aside from a couple of delivery trucks that arrived during my time there. Restrooms are handicap accessible and gender neutral. There are lots of happy plants both inside and outside. There was also a mix of individuals, couples, friend groups, and families, with a variety of seating options to accommodate all. I even saw a larger study/conference area in the back. I'm looking forward to going back to try the house-made cashew milk, and also the mimosas which can be made with orange juice OR kombucha! read more

This coffee is so nuanced & flavorful & delicious. I had a pound of their Bright Side (light roast) & I just went back and bought the Dawn 2 Dusk (mid dark). The place is always busy. The espresso tasted a bit over-extracted, which made my iced latte taste less sweet than it should've been. Cappucino wasn't as dry as requested, but that didn't bother my bf much. & the smokey mocha was good. Service: My bf and I are very familiar with coffee/coffeeshops, but his dad is not - and that's fine. What is not fine is when someone is clearly a little lost and the barista that is taking the order is impatient, not giving suggestions or asking helpful questions. My bf and I ended up asking questions like, "do you know if you like a hot or cold coffee?", "do you want something flavored?", and I feel like the barista could've - should've done that for him at the very least. They have the most delicious and huge, when I tell you it's yuge! it didn't fit in my mouth and everything fell off but I managed, I made it work and it was delicious, their avocado toast is a must. Crusty buttery bread, creamy avocado chucks and sweet/tart balsamic reduction, heavenly! I also tried their chai and it was very good, super balance spices and not overly sweet unlike some places that use pre made blends that literally sugar water no flavor. If there's two things I love, it's spooky things and chai lattes. Dark Heart Coffee Bar happens to have both. I can't believe I didn't know about this place sooner! I ordered an oat milk chai latte and an almond butter and jam toast. The chai was delicious--flavorful but not too sweet. I loved the aesthetic with dark features and some industrial-looking elements. This place will definitely serve as decor inspiration for our new house. The almond butter and jam toast was a little much--way too big and really messy to eat. The piece of toast came out measuring at least 6" long, and there was so much almond butter and jam caked on it that it gooped all over our hands, face and plate. It was definitely too much for one person in my opinion--luckily my partner was willing to eat half of it. Regardless, I would definitely return to Dark Heart in a second. I have been coming here for a number of years and it never disappoints. When I lived in Loveland, I would go almost every morning. My go to beverage is a Cortado. They ALWAYS make a wonderfully balanced and refreshing cup of coffee. The staff is friendly and engaging. Have a question? They all have the geeky coffee gene and are more than happy to craft one to your liking. Pasties are a must as well. I'm not certain if they are made in house or not, but they are delicious! My personal favorites are the strawberry croissant and any of the macaroons. The entire vibe is very typical coffee house with a dark flare. It's great if you need to settle in and work for a few hours. I even imbibe in the merch and can boast owning at least three of the their tumblers. Need a place for your group to meet? No problem, they have a community room in the back you can reserve which speaks to this place as more than just a coffee house, but a pillar of the community. Lastly, be on the lookout for that precocious little lemur ;) he likes to find himself amongst the rafters. read more

With its well balanced drinks to its local business supported treats served within its walls, Dark Heart hits all the marks. Every single item I tasted was a culinary pleasure and definitely worth the experience. The macarons provided by the local business Honey B's macarons were flavorful with the perfect texture. Also, the kombuchas on tap were so freakin' delicious that I eagerly tried 4 different flavors and happily sipped on each one during my visit. My friends had the honey breve latte and mocha latte, both of which were not overly sweet and had a smooth texture and savory, well balanced taste. Additionally, the design of the shop screams edgy, industrial, hipster, and progressive all at the same time. Just the details of the hanging lights and plants, to the black walls and tons natural light shining through, made everything a vision. I think I even spotted a garage door on the side wall that opens up to the outdoor seating area...love it! When we are walking around old Loveland, this is a nice stop. A little off of the beaten path, but worth the extra steps.

I relocated to the area a month ago and have been in and out of Dark Heart numerous times since. Its the obvious stop in the area, especially for someone like me: seekers of an early-morning pick me up who don't do espresso at home. But, sometimes when businesses become the obvious choice, they lose sight of the things that once made them special. I've never been recognized or acknowledged, despite interacting with the same person at the counter nearly every visit. I've also never witnessed a community-style vibe in the times I sat and hung out. Admittedly, the place looks really cool, and they play choice music (if a little loudly right away at 7am). Today I requested that the barista swap out their regular espresso for the feature in my latte. The barista explained, somewhat condescendingly, that the espresso would be washed out. What she didn't realize is that I find their regular espresso gets swallowed, anyhow (I usually get a sense of acid and generic roast - but no notable character). I explained this, and she simply repeated herself... two more times. I'm a career food and beverage worker with over a decade of experience. Sometimes guests ask for the objectively wrong thing. You do it anyway, for the sake of providing a personalized experience. Ice for your Pinot Noir? Yes, sir. Ultimate point being: I know my way around a coffee shop. And a coffee drink. I've also been a barista. Maybe my expectations are too high, because the shop I left when I moved over-delivered on both counts. Perhaps the basis for comparison is unfair. But I genuinely wanted to fall in love with Dark Heart. I'm just getting the repeat impression that its more style than substance. read more
