Ignore the bad reviews. They seem strange, childish, and nonsensical. As mostly college students go here, that is no surprise. They're also old. The drinks are good, prices are good, and obviously kava is always served in bowls. All of the people are friendly, especially the bartenders. Very cozy hangout spot, even for us old millennials. read more

This place is so wonderful and I'm so grateful I found the Root! I moved here a little over a year ago and didn't know I single person in Colorado when I moved here. I started coming to the Root frequently, and made so many friends. All of my close friendships are from hanging out at the Root. I also really enjoy drinking kava. It's such a grounding and relaxing experience. Such a fun place to come if you're looking for an alternative to going out to a regular bar. what a bummer of a place!! i came in expecting low lights, a hippy/psychedelic vibe, good kava, and cool people. the ambiance immediately struck me when i arrived. the lights were fully blaring on a friday night with shitty club music playing. everyone was sitting on their phones, some people even had headphones in, and few people were conversing or looked remotely down to converse with others/make friends. the bartender was standoffish and rude. they serve the kava to you in a metal bowl. i went into this experience open minded and open hearted, as i just moved here and i'm looking to make friends. all i can say is this is certainly not the welcoming or cool crowd i thought it would be, but starkly the opposite in a way that i didn't even think was possible! i guess all the interesting people i had anticipated meeting in boulder are going somewhere else on a friday night. i will not be back. read more

Kava is alright but the employee named Miles is hostile & unwelcoming. It's a shame because I had been in a couple times but each time I/my friends have interacted with him he is aggressive and rude/possibly drunk? Won't be back. Other employees are great but I can't be at a business where my friends and I feel uncomfortable due to the presence of an antagonistic employee that is seemingly always there. read more

Came here to try kava for the first time, and was pleased with the experience. I had a "Dirty Badger" (their strongest kava drink), with pineapple to sweeten the taste. Kava has a remarkable numbing effect on the mouth, initially, and quickly put me in a state similar to the very beginning of a mushroom or acid trip - colours slightly enhanced, perception tilted just slightly to the left, so to speak. An hour or so later I was ready to fall asleep, nodding off, and it was only the afternoon. I'd recommend kava as a nightcap for insomniacs. The place was empty when I went in, but it was during the day, and I expect it comes more alive at night. I enjoyed the wall art and shelf of games and books, and noticed a big stage, which the bartender said hosted musical acts on weekends. I appreciated the knowledge on offer from the bartender, who explained how kava works (you should start with a larger dose, since it has reverse tolerance) and what some of the other menu items were. This place also offers kratom, which anyone who's suffering from an opiate addiction should take note of, since kratom can help you kick your habit. The only real issue was the lack of coat hooks in the bathroom (and the hard-to-find light switch, as someone else mentioned). I'd rather not have to set my purse and coat on a dirty bathroom floor. I don't care how often you clean it, a floor is a floor. I'll be back! read more

I had my notions about kava bars -- a chill atmosphere where one can enjoy an herbal non-alcoholic drink in a mellow and relaxed setting. Little did I know that this would not be the experience that I had hoped for. I came in with a friend on a Saturday evening and it was mellow to the point of vacant. We were welcomed by a nice fellow who introduced us to the menu options and we were disappointed to find out that they were out of CBD extract (on a Saturday evening might I add !!). The oddest part of our evening was the decor. It appeared as if the designer, in an attempt not to disappoint anyone, had accepted all the ideas from everyone who had pitched them. There appeared to be a lack of continuity amongst the skateboard art that lined the wall above the windows, the wanna-be Alex Grey painting, the unsettling anthropomorphized cat portraits in the bathroom, and what appeared to be a mural of underwater seaweed. In all honesty, I felt like the place was the lovechild of the Arise Festival aesthetic and a Vans skateboard shop located in a shopping mall in middle America. Oh yeah, and the light switch for the bathroom was located on the least convenient wall. read more

A wonderful new addition to Boulder's nightlife scene. The Root Kava Company offers healthy non-alcoholic beverages, all derived from plants - Kava, CBD, Kratom, teas and mushroom/superfood "koffee" (by Rasa, a local female owned company ) and kombucha on tap. Tonight, we tried the Strawberry Kratom tonic, Mango CBD tonic and traditional kava. They were all delicious + the care and quality was obvious. I have never been too into the traditional bar scene and deeply appreciate plant medicine, so I'm super stoked to have this place nearby. The ambiance is perfect, with comfortable seating (beautiful bar, small tables, large community table and sofas,) local art and cozy vibes. Tonight we met one of the owners, Patrick - a super friendly, informative man who told us of Root Kava's plans to have a lot of live music, open mics and community events. The Root Kava is easily my favorite Kava stop in Colorado. After some disappointing Kava experiences in Denver, I have found regularly making the trek to Boulder to go to The Root Kava is well worth it. They have a great happy hour and home made shrubs to turn down that funky kava taste. The bartenders are super nice, and the space has a really chill vibe. They even have Mad Libs and board games to play with while you're hanging out. I really like their eclectic style. This place is dope. I've seriously gone back weekly since my first time visiting. read more

As a lifelong resident of Boulder I feel I need to call this place out. First of all and most important the customers are not required to wear face coverings. I went in at 12AM for a "midnight slammer" and not a single customer was wearing a face covering (the employees were wearing a face covering). With that aside, my biggest gripe is that the potency of their product is just not there, at all, and for the price that they charge it should be there. I gave this place a try on several occasions. Last Tuesday I tried 2 of the $12 drinks and barely felt anything after the server told me that the $12 drinks were the strongest. And this doesn't just apply to the kratom, the kava potency is not there either which leads me to believe that somethings up with either the active ingredients or the portions in general.
