My all time favorite coffee shop in Alaska. I'm a huge Kaladi fan, but sometimes they can be a hit or miss. But this place, throughout the years, every coffee has been consistently amazing. Bold flavor, but no bitterness. Not too sweet of a mocha. Love their coffees. Not a huge fan of the actual shop tho, it's quite cramped, especially during a rush. Location has no designated parking either, I'm always at risk for a ticket when coming here lol please open up another location! :) read more

The rating is warranted. The only thing keeping me from a 5 is the wait time for their drip coffee. This is great for the business, as they were just so busy it was hard to keep up with the pace of customers in the door. The dark roast (from Heritage Roasters in Juneau) was delicious. Very friendly staff! I spoke to the barista about their beans that they sell by the half pound or full pound. She recommended an Ethiopian blend that she loves using for espresso. The beans are roasted by Heritage Coffee and shipped straight over from Juneau. This is one of the few places in town that a) doesn't use Kaladi's horribly roasted and frozen coffee, b) doesn't burn their coffee and c) doesn't use crappy Torani or Da Vinci brand syrups for all of their flavors. They use Heritage Coffee, which in my humble opinion, is smoother and far more palatable than other roasters in state. I LOVE how their caramel and chocolate flavorings are ACTUAL, thick and viscous sauces -- not sugary sweet bottled syrups or that horrible Ghiradelli powder that every other place slings like it's coffee gold. AND they have a ton of different options for really good frappes (more than just ice and espresso shots like other places), plus like, five or six different chais that aren't watered down liquid concentrates but a sort of creamy powder that they steam. Their Americanos have more shots-per-size than other places I've been to, and their prices are really quite reasonable. Under $3 for a 4-shot Americano? Yes, please! Yeah, it gets hella busy in the morning, but what do you expect when you listen to the line, and every other person has a completely different drink to make? Don't go over early when the masses make their exodus from the cubicle farms across the street, and you'll be fine. They also have frequent-buyer stamp cards or pre-paid cards where you can get a little extra for what you pay for. read more

Nice enough place (3rd visit in a week and always a stop when I'm up here weekly). Being the only game in town downtown at an early hour, it was packed.  Call in orders keep them pretty busy,  so even with  a toasted bagel order & a coffee, the staff was advertising a 20 minute wait. Nice folks, but definitely overwhelmed by the limits of the kitchen. read more

A MUST SEE IN ANCHORAGE!! Dark Horse will always hold a little piece of my heart. An absolutely adorable coffee shop right in downtown with tons of hanging flower pots decorating the outside. They proudly serve Heritage Coffee and they have a great tea selection (highly recommend the mango rose!). The food is incredible, they make a great eggwich! But my go to is always the acai bowl; made fresh and topped with delicious fruits and amazing granola. I pair it with a soy chai latte which is absolutely incredible. Highly recommend for any non coffee drinkers! The wait is fairly long in the mornings but definitely worth it. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem, and solid proof that the downtown Kaladi Brothers coffee stop is way overrated. All they've got going for them is their location pretty much, and their ever growing super slow service. Check out Dark Horse Coffee! Excellent service, atmosphere, and most importantly -COFFEE. I like Dark Horse because it's independent and local. Since I've been going here a lot because my work is close by, I've learned there are a few areas for improvement. For example, I always go for drip coffee, because it's extremely fresh and quick and from my favorite roaster in Juneau. Unfortunately, whenever I go for something more complex and to-go, I've had to wait 10+ minutes because it's a popular place, and they only have one person making the espresso drinks. In all, I would suggest going in knowing that it's better to experience as a sit-down place. They have affordable lunches too. The ladies that run DH are dedicated and care about their work, they also remember you as well, which is why I keep going back. read more

This is a great coffee shop tucked in behind humpy's and in front of the new center downtown. It's a renovated house that is small but cozy. They offer computers and wireless, the wireless being free with purchase. Their breakfast sandwich is satisfying and also love their quiche. The syrup list is extensive including (yeah for me) quite a variety of suger free options (including mocha). This is surely one of the top coffee places in the area and worth the visit. read more

Delicious coffee and an awesome & friendly staff. My guy got the dirty chai, he said it was yummy. He did not even have to tell me the Oatmeal was good. I could see that all by myself. I won a $25 gift card to this downtown coffee house at an auction and enjoyed a few Americanos there over a week or two. The coffee was your average, decent Americano, not noticeably different than a Starbucks, and perhaps slightly less delicious. This might be made up for by the independence of the place, and the friendly staff. I believe it is family owned. I've also had a daily soup there which was nothing special. During another occasion I bought a pound of coffee with the remaining money on my gift card. So far, it has been tastier than the coffee the pull themselves.... so perhaps that says something? If you are to go, go for a very relaxed setting / good for kids / working / reading. read more

This is such a cute coffee shop! Plenty of seating. Fun soft music playing. People behind the counter were super nice! Apricot candy is amazing! I think I am hooked after one bite! Peanut butter cookie is just the right combo of soft and crunchy. Mocha picante coffee reminded me of sitting by the fire and kicking my feet up. Has cinnamon in it and it warms your whole body. Very frustrating here today. This is my go-to place for buying bulk coffee beans, in part because it's nearby my work and in part because they do the best job I've found in Anchorage so far of grinding beans for me to use in my french press at work. Today I went over there from work specifically to try their breakfast eggwich, about which I had heard good things. I ordered one on the "everything" bagel, to go. The checkout person asks me if I want ham or turkey, i tell her "ham"; she writes the order info on the plastic wrap around the bagle and sets it near the person who is preparing sandwiches, oatmeal, etc. She tells me the price, I give her cash and drop the 75 cents change into the tip jar and go stand in the waiting-to-pick-up line. And I wait. And wait. Finally I see an everything-bagel sandwich being bagged but the person making it calls out "Mark" and someone -- perhaps named Mark -- steps up from behind me, picks it up off the counter and leaves. I check my watch; it's been 15 minutes, the last several of which I have been standing in first position of the waiting-to-pick-up line. OK, I've never ordered a breakfast sandwich here and maybe there really were a lot of sandwich orders in the queue before I arrived. Later, the sandwich-maker person looks at a bread eggwich that's been in the grill a while then addresses me and asks if the "other Mark" took the bagel eggwich that she had set out earlier. I said that she had indeed called out "Mark" earlier and that someone took that bag and left. She said that this one (in the grill) was his and asked me if I had time for her to re-make mine. I told her i had already paid for it and had waited this long, do "yes". She makes my bagel eggwich, puts it on the counter, tells me "sorry about the delay" and turns. I tell her that I noticed that most of the sandwich orders are called out with a person's name and I ask if I should have insisted that the person who took my order also take down my name. She said that that didn't matter because she heard someone say "Mark". I said that I don't know "Mark" or why he was given the sandwich I ordered. She said that next time, they will ask for my name, and she turned away from me. As I turned to leave the Dark Horse, I thought to myself that it doesn't matter; I won't be coming here again. Back in my cubicle at work, the sandwich tasted OK, but after $7, a 25 wait time, and such service, it wasn't at all pleasurable to eat. read more

Dark Horse has THE best coffee in Anchorage. I'm biased because I'm a regular but they have always been sweet and polite.

The espresso is good, smooth and clean, consistent from day-to-day (I'm on day three), and while it's busy at 7am there is a nice order and rhythm happening behind the counter that moves things along. The hand and cheese quiche was also creamy and good for a fast morning breakfast on your way to work. It must be good coffee because I've passed on the free coffee and trudged through freezing cold single digits for 6 blocks both ways all week... read more
