Watched as the barista kept reusing the same frothing pitcher over and over without cleaning it. So customers gets previously heated milk mixed in with their drink. The latte I ordered wasn't worth a second sip. Gross for 2 reasons: 1) Milk when heated properly becomes sweeter; then when overheated becomes thin and watery and burnt tasting. Which is how your drink will end up. 2) Food safety standards dictate you have to keep dairy refrigerated. In this case you're getting old milk throughout the day (frothing the milk doesn't pasteurize it either). read more

If you like good coffee for a good price then this is your place--the coffee is delicious. I only ordered the coffee, none of the fancy stuff for me, so I can't speak for anything else on the menu. Why did nobody tell me about this place! I stopped in one morning before work since I really needed a pick me up and I could not believe my luck. The place is small and if you are ordering anything more than coffee it will take a bit (coffee is in a canister before the line starts so you can fill up your own), but The people were so friendly and I felt like the delicious chai that I ordered got all the attention that I would expect from a friend not your average barista. I only been here once, but they have an excellent selection of tea for the tea drinkers and very friendly baristas. From what I can see, also very environmental friendly and offers organic options. The staff seemed a little over their heads and could benefit from better organization or taking a pause from collecting customers money and share the work load. I lOVE this cozy little shop. As a regular customer I've been coming here for almost three years. It's true the wait can be almost 15 minutes sometimes because of conventions or whatever events are going on in town, but as a regular you learn to plan your coffee break wisely. Don't order your coffee if you only have two minutes to spare, seriously if you've waited in line to order, you will have to wait in line to get your order- It's a pretty simple equation. The staff are cheerful, and the food is so delicious. The thing I appreciate the most about Dark Horse is the quality and caring they put in each cup of coffee. Came here for a bite and WiFi. Wasn't too impressed by the decor / ambiance of the area (the music was actually quite random and distracting) nor was I impressed with what I ordered. I had the acai bowl (mostly because I can't ever say no to a bowl of acai!) and was quite disappointed. The acai probably would've tasted better as a smoothie / with a straw (it was so watered down!). The granola was good with the acai, but there wasn't enough. This is my downtown go-to cafe. Their sitting area is nice and cozy, they have free wifi and have a couple of computers and a printer to use for a small charge. If it gets crowded, guests can share the large round table in the middle. The front area is a little crowded, but it works. The place will definitely be packed during lunch if there's a convention going on across the street so be prepared. They run drink discounts M, W, and F. All their espresso drinks are standardly delish, not too sweet or strong. They also have a tastey juice/tea smoothie that's nice if you're sick of caffeine. There was a corn chowder that didn't smell too great for me, but the 1/2 sandwich with their house sauce was pretty good! They have a really good tea selection and give it to you already fused in hot water instead of with a tea bag. The staff is always nice and friendly! read more

After gorging on cruise ship food for a week, we were ready to settle down with the basics. We came across this place and instantly fell in love with it as soon as we walked in. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and enthusiastic! We asked about the oatmeal, and were told it was "killer"! And what a treat: a huge serving of thick cut freshly cooked oats accompanied by brown sugar, raisins, pecans, cranberries, granola and milk! The macchiato espresso is delicious! Great atmosphere and is non-stop busy: usually a sign that their coffee is good. An overcast day with light rain makes this the perfect pick-me-up. The pastries need a bit of work, but it may be difficult to come by a good patisserie here in Anchorage (I presume that these are outsourced). This review is for the drip coffee and overall atmosphere. That being said, I'm excited to return next week for their $2.50 mocha deal on Monday. The drip coffee is smooth, and never turned bitter or tasted burnt. Also, it's only 50 cents for a refill that you get yourself. The coffee mugs are so chic, too. A big plus that they utilize mugs in addition to to-go cups (unlike KB coffee). I didn't try the food goodness, but it all looked tasty. Friendly staff, quick. The seating area is fairly small, but I was able to get a spot on a Friday around 1 pm with an outlet. Finding a parking spot nearby was a bit of a bitch, though. Always busy and bustling, I like the cozy feel of the place. Clean bathroom available for customers. Noisy with nearby conversations, but that's exactly what made it feel alive and buzzing. read more
